To describe our experience in one word? Mediocre. Cocktails were too syrupy, food took 40 + min, wait staff was MIA and the food was just ok. The building is gorgeous! The atmosphere was inviting. The food was delicious, albeit the entrees were smaller than expected. Our waiter was cordial but not familiar with the menu so he spent a lot of time searching for answers to our questions. I hope to return and expect that after the "newness" wears off the manager will make adjustments to the presentation of menu items. One would expect to have fries accompanying the burger! Great service in a really cool space. Rob our server was very helpful and made us feel welcome. Biggest complaint was the food. Especially the burger. Patties were severely overcooked and bistro fries were also dry and over cooked. Short rib risotto was good but not great. Even the ginger chicken bites seemed over done. Let me start with the place aesthetically is nice. The server was polite, however service was not very attentive overall. The food was marginal, nothing to bring me back twice. Also the entire meal app to main came out at once. The salmon cake is no better than an armature would make at home from cheap canned salmon. The ginger chicken bites were good, not outstanding as the sauce was nothing more than standard remoulade with sriracha. The Crudité Board literally was a hot house tomato, fresh broccoli, shaved radish, a spoons smear of hummus literally, the only pickled items were standard red cabbage and the stalks of the broccoli that usually would be waste. The burger although good beef was a smash burger crispy, why even use quality beef when there is no flavor or texture benefit. To cap the meal off, when using the restroom, both I might add, had vomit or feces all over the floor and stalls, yes from door to stall! One employee was making an effort with a mop while we walked around them.... Given the volume of staff one would think the place would function better. This seems to be a case on a business too big to fail in the local market. On a positive note, the wine list wasn't terrible and had a few decent non- standard choices. read more

Fantastic service with great food, beer and cocktails! We enjoyed this place very much. Nice, bright, and spacious inside and a beautiful outdoor space with a second bar and tables. We sat inside because the outdoor tables were booked. Even so, inside is just as nice. Loved the living wall! Very comfortable. Most would associate Madtree with beer and pizza but this is not that. Of course they have their beer list but they also have a full bar with a specialty cocktail list for those, like me, that don't drink beer. The food menu is smallish but everything we had was fantastic, my favorite was the smoked trout dip. Definitely worth another visit. read more

Service was extremely rude to my friends and me. They refused to seat us for about 7 minutes despite not being busy. We just stood in front of the hostess while she ignored us as did 2 other staff members who just stood around. the hostess was on the phone but she didn't call anyone over and the other person that came over didn't get any help either. unfortunately it seems to me that we were treated like this because two of my friends are people of color. the staff was extremely rude to us once we were served as well. we had questions about the menu and were given extremely short answers. when the server wasn't at tables, i saw him staring at us from the bar. we were also placed at a table with no set up glasses/silverware/plates even though the restaurant was empty (there were about 3 parties when we walked in). Also, not a single refill. After 30 mins of empty plates, we had to ask for the check. as for the actual food, the salmon cakes and crispy tofu were good. I got the butter squash salad, which was not really a salad but just squash and olive oil. it was my friends birthday and we were excited to try a new place. the service was absolutely not worth it. so disappointing :( read more

First time at the ALCOVE, let me start by saying the staff was attentive and cheerful. Wife has a gluten and lactose allergy. Their menu and kitchen staff was more then accommodating. She had the roasted green beans without the cheese and the salmon patties with a sauce with a little bit of heat, cucumber thin slices. Most excellent! I had the Bistro Fries and Ohio Valley Burger. The burger was a little over cooked for what I'm used to but would order it again. The bistro fries with the sauce the served was top notch. Not a beer drinker but the cocktails, Blackberry Bourbon Mint smash and Raspberry and citrus Sangria hit the spot. read more

I was so excited to try this restaurant. Drinks were delicious, charcuterie and mushroom tartine was wonderful. My issue was the green Caesar salad. I was so excited for it, it sounded so good. The "dressing" was very thick almost a sour cream or yogurt consistency in the middle of two layers of lettuce. Along with the chicken, it did not have any seasoning. I didn't even finish it, and for me that's very rare. I know seasoning depends on the person but there no salt whatsoever on any of the salad. The atmosphere overall was wonderful and I would definitely go back there for a drink or light bite. read more

Bouquet is our absolute favorite restaurant, so I had really high hopes for Alcove. The first visit, we sat in the greenhouse style area. Gorgeous space, impressive design. I've never been a fan of Madtree beer but was excited to go because of the tie-in with Bouquet. The first trip food was underwhelming, under seasoned, bland....blah. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, having just opened. Months later my husband suggested Alcove and I hesitantly agreed. The charcuterie board and fries were good. You really can't mess those up. The dishes that had to be prepared...those had no flavor, no salt. We didn't even finish them. When we left my husband said "I feel like that place has an identity crisis...it doesn't know what it wants to be." That pretty much sums it up. We'll stick with Bouquet. read more

Went here on aTuesday night and had a reservation. Luckily we were able to sit on the patio, which is small and only has about 10 tables. I love the atmosphere and esthetic and it reminded me a lot of Somerset Bar with all of the greenery. The space is very open and modern. We had a couple of items off of the menu to snack on, charcuterie board and the French fries. I really enjoyed both, but wished that our server had gone over the board with us and what was on it after he brought it out. Overall, it was a great experience and I recommend! read more

We went here for a birthday dinner and had a great time. The menu was great but the portions were a little small. But when you consider everything was local and in season it's worth the price. Service was fantastic and the atmosphere was so nice. The only reason I gave it a 4 was that all of the cocktails are premixed which was disappointing considering everything else was fantastic. My husband and I had the pleasure of enjoying brunch on Saturday, March 5th. The space was airy and bright with a phenomenal living wall created by Urban Blooms. We enjoyed the the Ginger Chicken Bites, the Smoked Trout Spread along with items that were included on the Brunch menu, Braised Beef Chili over potatoes and topped with a fried egg, the Goetta and egg sandwich and the Smoked Trout salad. Everything was excellent!! Our server, Celeste, was friendly and attentive, providing excellent service. We are looking forward to our next visit soon. read more

The wait staff was great, our food was delicious and the drinks were were very good. Unfortunately, we were degraded and made to feel unwelcome with our children by who I think may have been the manager, but I am unsure. My husband and 18 month old were walking to her stroller to grab a wipe and as he was sitting another table he dead stopped what he was doing and said "guys can you just not" in a highly agitated tone and clenched fists, referring to us allowing our daughter to use her own feet and walk inside the restaurant to her stroller. It was embarrassing and degrading in front of a room of people. Our children were well behaved, there was no screaming, no melt downs. We were in the couch area of the greenhouse, so our 18 month old was walking back and forth taking bites from each of us, but she never veered from our table and did not seem to be a bother to anyone around us. It was extremely perturbing and we decided we did not want to finish our food, although it was great food, the instant flip of the vibe made us no longer feel comfortable to stay. read more

The dinner I had over Christmas with my family was great and the service attentive, even for a busy night. However, the brunch we had today was disappointing, and this was the second time I was disappointed by Alcove at brunch. We both ordered the quiche of the day. It was not warm but more room temperature, with a soft almost mushy crust, and was served with a small fried potato cake as a side, with nothing else. A bit of greenery on the plate or a small piece of fruit to give the pate color would have been more inviting and adding a small serving of some kind of dip or sauce for the potato side would have been nice. I asked for tea and they have none to offer. Hot water and a tea bag isn't hard to do is it? Our server, Ella, was sweet and gave good service. But I won't be back for brunch at Alcove. Having a nice looking space is one thing, but serving quality food, plated well, with options for non-alcoholic drinks at brunch is an expectation. read more

Came in for brunch. They were able to accommodate a large party pretty early on a Sunday with a reservation, but we probably didn't need one. The menu wasn't too exciting. Had some good alcoholic drink options, but only have regular hot coffee (no iced coffee for a hot day). They also didn't come back around with a carafe for refills of the coffee, they brought a whole new mug. We got the charcuterie board and crudite board first. The charcuterie board was pretty good. The crudite was alright also. The humus from the crudite was the best thing I ate the whole meal. For mains, I got the goetta gravy and biscuits. It contained about 3 biscuits split in half with a generous amount of gravy. The gravy didn't taste like goetta but weirdly tasted like skyline chili. I love skyline but it was a bit weird for a gravy supposed to taste like goetta. Others had the quiche which they said was good. The goetta sandwich didn't seem too special either. Overall a bit disappointed with the selection of the menu, no sides served with the meals (except a salad with the sandwich, but no fries with the burger?), and just general brunch vibes. read more

My girlfriend and I went here for dinner on a Sunday night recently. The experience was definitely worse than the ambience suggested. The inside and the greenhouse looked very nice, and that's definitely something this place has going for it. But other than that, everything else was sub-par. Our waiter was quite inattentive but at the same time giving us a hard time to make sure we got all of our orders in before the kitchen closed. And by all of our orders, I'm including drinks and dessert. Every other restaurant I've been to near closing time has allowed placing drink/dessert orders later. And the food was at best mediocre for a place like this. The meatballs were pretty bland, with basically no flavor other than beef; the burger was soggy, like it had been sitting out for awhile before being brought to our table; the sliders and mushroom tartine were alright, but nothing to write home about. And then the dessert, the apple crisp basically tasted and felt like just some chunky applesauce, and the ice cream was already completely melted. I was particularly disappointed about that because I normally love apple crisp! On top of all this, the greenhouse was a nice place visually to sit, but even with just a few tables filled around us, it was so noisy we could barely hear each other. If you only care about visual appearance of a restaurant, this place is pretty good, but otherwise, try one of the many other nice restaurants in OTR. read more
