Given my experience getting fitted and having suits made, I am extremely picky with the fit and quality of a suit. I've worked directly with Alan, and he has time and time again listened to my needs and accommodated my requests without hesitation. The staff at Alan David, including Elsie, David, and the various tailors (Beebee), are also great to work with. The key to getting a great fitting suit and customizing it is going through the basted fitting process. Basted fitting is an intermediate step between the first measuring appointment and the final try on appointment. During the basted fitting, you try on a basted garment that is essentially a shell of the suit before it is fully completed with lining, padding, etc. Trying on an unfinished, basted garment allows you to make virtually any changes that you want to the suit's fit and look before it is finally completed. Once a suit is completed there are certain changes you cannot make without remaking the suit (e.g., widening lapels, making suit longer, and others), so basted fitting is an important step. Alan David offers you this critical step, at no additional cost for every suit made. I have opted to do a basted fitting for all of the suits that I have made with Alan, and the process has resulted in a final fit and finish that are impeccable. Opting for this intermediate step adds an additional month or so on the normal turnaround time for a suit, but it is well worth it. All of Alan's suits are made in the U.S. locally, which makes making changes to current and future suits a breeze. Any changes that are made to your suit during the basted fitting garment and after are kept on file, so you do not need to request the same changes again. Alan David also offers a wide array of fabric selections, at various price points, from numerous mills, and with different thread counts. The sales reps at Alan David will guide you through the entire fabric selection and suit making process from start to finish. They also will keep you updated on the process periodically. Alan, in particular, is fantastic. The business has been around for a long time, and it has been passed down generation after generation in Alan's family. Alan is now at the helm of the business, and he cares deeply about his clients. Alan will literally bend over backwards to make sure you are happy and satisfied with not only the final product, but also the entire process that gets you to that product. With 2 pairs of pants in dire need of a hemming, I iphone'd "tailors midtown" on yelp- Alan David Custom came up so I stopped by after work. It was quickly apparent that this shop is not exactly a "walk-in" storefront, but rather a custom tailoring solution for larger orders, weddings, etc. Oops I think I surprised them by walking in unannounced with just 2 pairs of pants... (they're inside an office building up on a 5th or 6th floor). Despite my confusion the sales guy and assistant were clearly veteran professionals and I felt like I was treated as a valued client despite surprising them. Its hard to mess up a simple hemming, but they did an excellent job nonetheless. Took two weeks to come back as they were slammed with wedding orders though. read more

Alan worked so hard to make me completely satisfied that I felt that he earned the money that I paid him. I went to buy four suits and Alan sat with me and helped me select the fabrics and watched the measurements, which took over an hour. Alan has a lot of experience and helped me understand that some of my fabric color choices might be a little off and suggested slightly different shades. Not surprisingly, Alan was right and I have gotten a lot of compliments on my suits. Also, Alan oversaw the measurements and the multiple fittings. I wanted the suits to make me look tall and slender, without being too tight or snug. The suits looked great, but were too snug. Alan suggested that I wear it a few times to let it create its natural shape. For a couple suits, they now fit perfectly and look great. For one pair of pants, it was still a little too snug and Alan's tailor altered it to be perfect. I am a repeat customer with Alan David and highly recommend him. read more

Elsie called me shortly after to offer me an even earlier appointment over the weekend. When I arrived, the entire staff was friendly, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable. Although they were quick to provide expert advice when requested, they clearly wanted to ensure that everything I received reflected my needs and preferences. I ordered two custom suits and five custom shirts, all of which were finished on time (the shirts were finished early). The quality of the materials and fit is outstanding. My suits fit perfectly at the first fitting, and the quality of the fabric and stitching was immediately apparent. This quality is so noticeable that people (both people who wear suits regularly and people who rarely do) regularly comment on the fabric and cut of the suits. ADC's suits have a classic style that feels modern and will age well. I am writing this review just over a year after receiving my suits and shirts, and all remain in excellent condition, essentially indistinguishable from brand new. The bottom line is that I would recommend Alan David Custom to anyone looking for a high-quality and long-lasting suit. The quality is as high as or higher than any custom suits I have seen elsewhere, and the value is outstanding. The custom suits I received from Alan David are of much higher quality than custom and made-to-measure suits that friends have gotten from other NYC tailors for far more money. He had such a great experience he's having a couple of more suits made. I needed a tuxedo for an upcoming event and the people at Alan David could not have been better to work with. I made an appointment and sat down with one of their tailors. We discussed my budget and he didn't try to up-sell me to something I couldn't afford, which was nice. We then went through the myriad colors and fabrics they had available - luckily that process was made easier by the fact that I just wanted a black tuxedo. The tailor was happy to discuss every minute detail of my tuxedo with me, down to the way they measured the width of the lapel! After picking everything out he meticulously took my measurements. He was even so careful as to ask if the watch I was wearing that day would be the one I wore at the event (it is particularly large) so he would know if he needed to add some extra allowance to the size of the cuff. Once that was finished I was billed and sent on my way. A few weeks later I went to try on the mostly finished product and I was blown away! I thought it couldn't have looked better. But the gentleman there during the fitting made some suggestions about the length of the pant leg and the length of the arms of the jacket, which I agreed with. So back my tuxedo went for final adjustments. A few weeks later and after a final try on, I couldn't be happier with what I've gotten. All in all the service was exceptional. At my second try on I even asked if they made bowties (they do). When he told me how much one would be and I said that I didn't really want to spend that much on one he told me that going to a (name withheld) different store would probably be just as good for something like that. They never tried to guilt me into spending more than I wanted and the attention to detail was very reassuring. This is now the best suit that I own... I consulted Alan David for a 2nd custom suit. My previous was created by a young startup company out of DC that focused on made-to-measure process. That suit has held up well over the last 6 years. This is my first hand-made suit and first suit from Alan David Custom. I ordered one shirt, one vest, in a super 120s fabric. I wanted something special for my wedding and had my (now) wife help me pick out a color. We traveled from DC specifically for this service and I was very excited and confident about my choice based on the research I did before traveling up. Still, you never know what you get until the suit is delivered. And what I got was truly classic for me. They did a fantastic job. They got my suit completed, fitted, and delivered to my home the first time and on time for my wedding. Keep in mind, I was in DC. I had a backup suit in case it couldn't be ready. But they came through with flying colors. The custom shirt and a vest in addition were stellar. Truly, one doesn't know until you wear for some time and I have had a few weeks now to look at pictures. The suit is even better when I get to look at them from a camera lens. I have had time to compare the two suits for quality, construction, price, and feel. I could have easily worn my old charcoal grey custom suit for our wedding. But I am especially glad I purchased a new navy 3-pc from Alan David. My wife commented that it is just a bit more nicer in every way than the other suit. I notice this too. What I appreciate is how well the suit flows. While my other suit is also fully canvased and customized well, this suit lays just a bit more easily. This suit is easier to dance in than the other suit. While my other suit is a bit more tapered in areas (quads/hamstring), it feels a bit tight compared to the well tapered construction of ADs suit. Yet, the AD suit feels just a bit more relaxed in this area. The shirt was incredibly well picked and well done on the first try. The tailor I worked with was thorough. I went on the weekend due to limited availability during the week (I came from DC) and Elsie was incredibly helpful in pulling strings. I would venture to say that you'll get even better turn around if you are in the area. I read that Alan David actually considers themselves "close to bespoke" because they have multiple hand tailors instead of just one. The honesty and transparency of this fact is sobering in a world where things can get skewed. And, all of the tailors are resident in NY. The beauty to me (in this digital age with the affordable options out there) is how everything is done in NY. Without compromise. There are a lot of suit makers in NYC...but I will definitely be back for more custom wear due to the fantastic customer service I personally received from this establishment. read more

I got sick of trying to find an overcoat off the rack that fit appropriately, so after a quick Googlin' Alan David ended up on my radar. I scheduled an appointment with Elsie (she was an absolute delight throughout the entire process), and hopped the train to Midtown. They had a huge selection of fabrics, tried to upsell me on cashmere which is a biiiiit too rich for my blood. I ended up with a Piacenza 85/15 wool/cashmere blend and a simple slash pocket knee-length Chesterfield coat. Got measured, went home. It took five weeks for the coat to be ready, which was a bit out of spec with the 15-17 working days that their website promises. My second trip to Midtown was the fitting, which went all right but in hindsight I should have spent more time fussing. My third trip to Midtown I picked up the coat (this was two months down the road), I spent a weekend wearing it around town and it became clear that something was off. My arms were getting fatigued and my posture was being crunched a bit. Uh oh! Long story short the gang at Alan David took my concerns totally seriously, they were extremely accommodating of my schedule and pestering emails over the next couple of weeks to make the adjustments needed for a perfect fit. Alan himself assured me that if it didn't work out they could simply re-cut the entire garment, but turned out this wasn't necessary. Their service and attention was top-notch. My coat is simple, elegant, and beautiful, and it's warm without being bulky. Two pieces of advice for future customers: 1) Stand up straight when you're getting measured, you're gonna be looking like a zillion bucks in your new suit or coat and that's going to straighten your spine and give you some swagger. Make sure the tailors see your stance so they can integrate the crucial collar/shoulder position adjustments into your jacket. 2) Do some moving around in your suits/coats when they are fitting the final product on you, so that you can experience the full range of motion of a normal day. The office has some comfy chairs: sit down in them. There's a big hallway outside: Take a walk or three. Don't hesitate to ask questions and keeping talking through anything you observe that isn't 100% right. I was a little intimidated initially considering the scale of the purchase and the fact that I'd never really worn a full overcoat before, which resulted in me heading out the door in something that wasn't ideal. She knows her stuff. David helped me pick out fabrics, and I went with a grey Zegna - a great quality and not as expensive as I was ready to pay. (Armando?) fitted me, the whole process was easy and they were very honest and professional. As a younger guy looking for my second custom suit, I felt comfortable right away. The first fitting sold me. This suit is perfect, right on the first try, and I don't say that lightly. I'd never looked that good, and the fit is slim and modern without any tight spots. I'm all confidence in this thing. No alterations needed, first time working with them, and a quick manufacturing time (made in Queens). Truly spectacular. After 18 years together, my (now) husband and I decided to get married, and we figured we needed to look good for all of our guests. We searched online and talked to friends about getting "custom" suits, and we visited a handful of made-to-measure places, where they plied us with free alcohol and trendy surroundings. Yet, in each of those places, we would have some young dude who didn't really care about our wedding and sort of seemed to read from the same script for many of these fairly new suit companies. They seemed best for the bro set. At Alan David, everything was different. We knew going in that the focus was going to be on a quality suit, not some sort of flashiness of the marketing. We met with Alan who immediately took interest in our story and in our potential needs. Upon learning of our destination (late April in Phoenix, AZ), he quickly honed in on beautiful fabrics from Zegna and Loro Piana. Alan suggested the tropical Zegna line, and we couldn't be happier. Just the right weave and breathability for the warm weather of Arizona. He helped us to pick complementary gray and slate blue fabrics so that we wouldn't look matchy matchy but that we would look good together. He listened carefully to the type of cut we'd like, and he explained various options but essentially said "trust us, we'll get you the perfectly fitting suit for your bodies." He paid attention to making sure we didn't have a suit that was too young or too old for us, and he considered the weather for the wedding as well as how we'd want to use the suit for years to come. It can be a bit nerve wracking to not see exactly what you're going to get, and yet each suit was beautifully designed and made. There's no fancy machine that scans your body or anything like that - they simply take careful, organized measurements of the entire body, noting any little differences in posture and build....and like magic, a couple of weeks later, we were trying on stunningly sharp, perfectly crafted suits. With just one set of alterations, we walked away with gorgeous suits - with details such as label size perfectly customized for each of us. We each have some nice suits that make us look good, but Alan David's suits are undoubtedly head and shoulders above them. They just feel good to put on, and they look amazing. In every picture we have seen so far from our wedding, we are blown away by how perfectly shaped and tailored the suits are. Even by the end of the night, we were still looking good in our suits. Throughout the reception, our friends came up to us and gushed about our suits. Even our friends who live by some of the best suits out there were coming up and saying "wow, where did you get this?" I get married in two weeks! When it was time to decide where I was going to get my Tuxedo all I had to do was Google " Best Custom Tuxedo near me" Alan David was the first one to show up so of course I Gave them a call. The woman on the other line couldn't have been nicer. she urged me to get in ASAP, and I was there that same day. Everything here was top notch, especially the talented tailors and salesmen. My whole entire life I have never had a suit that fits properly. Once I was done getting measured I looked over to Cosimo and said " this is exactly why I came here" I was so confident just by the way he measured me that I came somewhere special. 6 weeks and 2 fittings later, I picked up my tuxedo and it was the best I've felt ever while wearing a suit!!!!! It fits like a glove! between the incredible fabric, the detailed measuring and the extremely detailed work by my tailor it almost feels like I'm wearing nothing at all that's how comfortable it is. My experience with this suit maker was very bad. The suits had mistakes that were irreversible ($1700 each), weren't finished with stitchng and buttons missing, and the service was a joke! Every time I mentioned something that wasn't right it was met with a laugh or a joke or another brush off comment. Hey I just spent $3,400 on two pants and two jackets! At least give me some attention to detail and the mistakes made with an apology! Oh and the timing, it took months on end to get the suits made. So, if you're in the market for overpriced suits that are made in Queens with minimal attention to detail and poor service, then this is your place. I am not a vindictive person, I would like to call you tomorrow and see if we can work something out to your satisfaction to finally remove the review. I am open to anything and everything. I am not going to use any of what I know about you against you, I am not like that. Min, I know where you work, right here in midtown, I know where you live, that you sold your apartment recently, I know everything thanks to a store you were at recently. I am not looking for revenge or any acts of vengeance towards you. I just want to know what I can do to, what in the world do I have to do to make it up to you. It is factual and correct, and I have a constitutional right to speak the truth (and not get threats). This place is terrible. They were supposed to do alterations on 6 pairs of pants. They gave me a date to pick up my stuff. When I arrived, the tailor had gone on vacation for two weeks and none of my garments were ready. I asked the nasty Filipino lady if she could help me locate my stuff. After 15 seconds of looking, she told me my pants were lost and shrugged. Lost!? She couldn't be bothered. She has the worst attitude. The quality of the suits were pretty bad when they were being done in Canada, and they didn't have the right machines to do invisible hems on pants. That might have changed recently as I think they have moved their operations to Brooklyn. It could be the quality is better. The owner is awfully nice and so is the tailor, Clyde. But the people who work for Clyde, and the nasty Filipino, Adelina, are C players. Alan got my stuff expedited, but I would never go back. And he offered no discount. I was in need of some work slacks and was referred to Alan David Custom, by a friend who lives in the New York area. I have an athletic build and have found it impossible to buy dress slacks, off the rack anywhere. Currently living in CA, I have frequent trips out to NY and on one occasion stopped by to see if Alan David could do something. Upon walking through the door I could not believe how friendly and accommodating the entire staff was and even after getting my clothes they called a couple times, just to check in and make sure everything was ok. I was measured for slacks and picked out a couple of colors and while I was at it, had them measure me for a suit as well. The process took abou 4 weeks, but on a subsequent trip, back to NY, I went to pick up my clothes. I was so pleased at how everything that I had picked out and got fitted for, was excellent! I was unhappy with the deliverable of my suits, shirts, and short jacket. But... Once Alan learned of my unhappiness he replaced everything and stayed with me every step of the way to ensure that I not only was happy but thrilled with the outcome. The owner Alan is a great guy, the best guy you can meet. I had bought two suits at a great price, even though the suits came a little bigger than I wanted, but the customer service is exceptional and they promptly took care of it. The only note I may have for next buyers is to make sure the lady who takes the measurements listen to you, or you may try to talk to the owner if he is available, which I am sure he will. What an amazing experience. The quality and styling of their suits and sport jackets are incredible. Great value. The fabric feels like silk and the fit is incredible. I had shirts made and two of them were wrong, my fault, and they gladly remade them no questions asked. Everything I bought was delivered on time and I look forward to purchasing more suits and sport jackets from them in the future.
