Black Lapel is a custom clothier that sadly lacks the quality and service they once had in the past. Years ago I ordered a full tuxedo from Black Lapel (for my own wedding) and they did an amazing job. It not only fit perfectly but was well made and the customer service was outstanding. Following this experience I continued to order shirts from them over the years. Recently I ordered a suit (and more shirts) from them and the customer service and clothing left a lot to be desired. To begin, my order of a suit with an extra set of pants and two shirts was split in half because they wanted to confirm my measurements were still accurate. After trying on my tuxedo, and confirming it still fit perfectly, they still insisted on splitting the order. I also asked for a small additional interior pocket to be added and was told they were unable to accommodate this. Seems odd for a custom clothier... I was told they'd make half the order and, once I confirmed everything fit, they'd make the other half. To my surprise, some 6 weeks later (I was told 4-5 weeks for arrival), my suit and a shirt arrived. Ok... is it really that big of a deal to hold the extra pair of pants and additional shirt? Those seem like much smaller items compared to a full suit. But, again, after confirming the fit, I waited for the rest of my order. After multiple inquiries by me, asking where my items were or for even a tracking number, I was still waiting. Now don't get me wrong, they responded, they just literally gave no helpful information: "Let me check on the delay..." Finally, 8 weeks later, my items arrived. Much to my dismay, however, the pants don't fit the same, do not feel like the same material, do not have a button on the back pocket, and are completely different interior construction (see picture). When I contacted them about this, which you can do via email only, they said "we recently switched manufacturers and this is likely where the discrepancy lies with your fit and finish." Well, that's the first time I'd been informed of that... not to mention it could have been avoided had they made the entire order all at once like I originally requested. Additionally, the additional collar stays I requested were not sent (despite being reassured that they would be). When I responded saying I'm disappointed and am questioning ever ordering from them again the have gone dark on me. They literally can apparently care less. So please, take my advice, DO NOT order from Black Lapel. It pains me to say it, but I strongly recommend shopping elsewhere; I will be. read more

Ended up purchasing another suit from them a few years back and again was very happy with the results. I recently purchased a tuxedo for a wedding and was blown away when it came. Black lapel makes solid, respectable suits for very fair prices. Their house style is basic and modern -- nothing too interesting, but if you just want to look good, you'll get that. The biggest con is a pretty limited fabric selection. A lot of great MTM shops will have a pile of fabric books for you to look through, but Black Lapel has a very finite list. They're all pretty good -- even their entry-level suits are made with Filarte wool -- but if you want to pick something in particular, this might not be the place. Entry level is $600 for a half-canvassed suit with bemberg lining, horn buttons, and functional buttonholes -- up from an earlier $500. That's roughly on par with SuitSupply, whose ready-to-wear offerings of similar quality range from $400-600, and whose MTM offerings start at about $700. They also have a full-canvassed line with a few extra features like a milanese loop buttonhole, metal side-adjsuters, and things like that, starting at $1000 -- up from their previous $900. This is also a good value. They do suits (including tuxedos), blazers (and dinner jackets), pants, vests, shirts, and overcoats. All of them come with a pretty limited fabric selection. I have never been more dissatisfied with a clothing company than I am with Black Lapel. I was part of a wedding party which utilized Black Lapel to order custom matching suits. As a result of multiple customer service and workmanship issues, I was delivered a suit which was completely unwearable 2 days before the wedding day. Ultimately, I needed purchase an off-the-rack suit from Macy's as a best attempt to match the color and style of suits that the rest of the wedding party wore. This caused undue stress to me and the groom in the weeks leading to the wedding. It also caused me to have to spend an extra $1000 out of pocket to get a new suit, and resulted in pictures and wedding party appearance being inconsistent due to me wearing a different but similar suit. A list of the issues are as follows: -Payment issues on the website which prevented the groom from being able to pay for all the suits. This stopped the wedding party from being able to order the suits for 4 weeks, limiting the time we had to make adjustments to the suits before the wedding. -Voucher code issues which prevented me from being able to order the suit after the payment issues were resolved for an additional week. -Initial suit delivered 10 days before the wedding with major issues (pants too small to be worn or buttoned, suit/shirt/vest too small in some areas, too large in others) -Suit sent back to Black Lapel for alterations. I recommended that a completely new suit be made because the initial suit was too far off, but our representative declined and promised the alterations could be made. -Suit returned 2 days before the wedding. Inadequate alterations were made. Pants were still too small. Jacket, vest, and shirt were somehow made smaller which resulted in the whole suit being too tight to lean over, sit down, put arms above head, or generally move around in. I have four different Black Lapel suits now, each purchased at a different point over the past 10 years, the most recent 2 or 3 years ago, and the quality is consistently excellent. Nothing to complain about there, and I imagine most or all of the complaints about quality are due to people who took their measurements wrong, refused to work with customer service to have imperfections fixed, etc. They are great suits, no doubt about it. I can't justify shopping there anymore though. Back in 2012 when I got my first suit, it was $450 for the full suit. A really incredible deal. I think $150 for the pants and $300 for the jacket. Unbeatable value. I also got a waistcoat with that suit (discovered from that waistcoat that they're not really my thing in general) for another $75 to $100. I was the best-dressed guy at that wedding. $450 in 2012 should run you about $550 in 2020, and back in 2012 $450 was the standard rate for their suits. At some point either then or a few years later, they introduced a Savoy line, suits that are presumably even higher quality at an increased price point. I didn't need anything better than their standard suit, and only a wealthy person or someone who lives in their suits day-in and day-out ever would. But it wasn't a problem, because most of the suits were their standard suits, and their full variety was available at their standard price point. This is not the case anymore. The Savoy line and similar products are their main product now, and that's where all the variety is. Technically you can find a stray suit here and there for about $600, but unless you need another very basic black or blue or grey suit, you're going to be paying $700 or $800 for a Black Lapel suit these days. There's nothing they can do about inflation, but these prices far outpace that, and I'm not sure about you, but my income hasn't doubled in the past decade, and the typical consumer's hasn't either. There were a few beautiful sports coats I was hoping to save up for years ago priced at $350 to $400 or so. Now they run $600, and even at that price point the patterns aren't as interesting... Black Lapel simply isn't the same company anymore. They used to offer tailor-made suits at an extremely affordable price, now they just offer tailor-made suits. I'm sure they still fit great and are made of high-quality fabric, but there are plenty of competing options at their current price point that are just easier. For $700 - $800 you can get a Brooks Brothers suit at their typical discounted price. For $700 - $800 you can even get a tailor to make you a custom made-to-measure suit in person. For better or worse I have intense brand loyalty with my clothing. I need a few sports coats, but looking at their site it's clear that they have simply priced me out as a customer now. I hope they change up their model and move back towards the quality at bargain prices that made their name and I'll be able to order another suit from them one day. But I can't justify their products to myself anymore and I can't justify them to you either. read more

Update: I received my custom shirt a while back; and it fits amazingly! The fabric is quality without being heavy (although they have heavier fabrics if you need shirts for the winter) and it doesn't have the annoying poof/pouch effect that most dress shirts have on the size. The one thing is that they aren't wrinkle-free, but they explained in the store that Black Lapel doesn't like to use those types of chemicals, so I'll just iron them as I do with my clothes in general anyway. Video/Virtual measurement: I've been contacted and video chat with Emmanuel using iPad. I thought it will be difficult in video but not at all! Emmanuel is super friendly and professional! Extremely professional! I don't know how to measure my body. My husband was helping me measure but we can't do it without Emmanuel's instruction, he guide us through every measurements. He's there constantly keep an eye on my measurement. He knows better what are the reasonable inches for my size (I'm a petite size Asian with a belly after delivered baby). I first discovered Black Lapel a few years back. I remember the very first time I ordered their store was located by FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). They have now since moved and expanded! Since I was impressed with the quality of he clothes and services, I ordered more from them! First visit: circa 2014, Garry helped me and he was awesome! It was my first time getting a suit and everything fit very well! (see attached photos of the dark gray suit). Second visit end of 2016 / start of 2017: I needed a suit for my Paris proposal suit. Calvin and Matthew helped me out and they were superb! I got a blue suit (see attached photos) and a navy blazer and multiple shirts as well. End of 2017 I referred a friend and Chris helped him out and he was happy with his purchase too! Also shout out to JG which helped me a lot with my concerns. Customer service is awesome here. I suggest you make an appointment and check out their stuff in the Manhattan showroom. If you are out of town I suggest get an AirBNB and drop by NYC get measured and pick out your clothes. You only have to visit once, and they can save your measurements then you can just order online next time! I've been on the fence for a year about made to measure. The rumors are true that first try is not going to fit right, when it arrived the jacket fit nicely, but the pants were the worst fitting pants on i have ever tried. My tailor pointed out it was made completely wrong, but he did admit the material was very nice. He advised that him remaking the following points might not work and may ruin the pants. I tried pushing the tailors at Black lapel to follow the tailors comments but they said nothing is wrong with the pants for several months. Finally we made a deal that if the tailor failed with the pants, they will then try to remake the pants. As a side note I went to two tailors and they both said nothing can be done and that it fit fine. But something felt off. Anyway, the tailor I eventually found said he was going to try but no guarantees. The following suggestions from the tailor were refused by black lapels "tailors" like I was speaking a foreign language. My belief is that they don't have actual tailors, just people who enter numbers into a template. Try observe the following errors that the black lapel team said was fine (green shirt picture) 1. Tight on the hips (fabric pulling) 2. On the thigh it was pulling up into my crotch. You can see it by the upward ripples into my hips. 3. Pulling at the calves (too tight) I've been trying to find a tailor for two months, and the tailor took two months, so the outfit wasn't ready until 4 months. FYI, this is my first suit. The tailor charged me 85 dollars for the alteration (1000 dollar savoy suit), but these pants fit perfectly to my body. The jacket the tailor unfortunately said fits perfect, but to me, the difference in the pants made it go from a 5 dollar pair of pants to a pair that I am willing to pay 400 dollars for. Seriously the pants fit me really well in a way that it'll only fit me. Tip for customers: have a tailor that can handle these types of mtm clothes, a simple "plus 1 inch" on the hips will not fix the issue. Trust me, I went to the tailor after each adjustment, the pants needed to be reshaped. Tip for black lapel: for savoy suits, don't make the measurements so tight. Everything was very tight and it's hard for a tailor to work with. I would say make the tailoring donation for standard suits 50 dollars, and 100 dollars for savoy suits. The jacket feels like an 8.5 out of 10, but the pants feel at minimum 10 or 11 out of 10, seriously I am so happy with my purchase, even though it took me 4 to 6 months to address Again orange shirt is after and green shirt is before. read more

First Impression: The first time I heard of 'Black Lapel' was when I complimented my colleague on his suit. He wore the 'Blue Windowpane Shadow Check Suit'. The suit was sharp, finely-detailed, and easy-on-the eyes. I couldn't take my eyes off it and just had to know where he got it from! Quality & Alteration Process: As a female, it's quite challenging to find finely-detailed custom suits that have a well-tapered and polished look. So I was delighted to know the business specializes in custom suits. I had to make an alteration on my first suit jacket due to the sizing however, the staff made the alteration process a breeze. Since then I have ordered a total of 3 suits. (Shout out to Warren for giving me adjustment advice on how to give the suit more of an feminine touch!) In addition to the quality, the customer service is extraordinary. Their communication and actions are consistently prompt, professional and warm. Price: I have always been willing to pay more for a quality suit & for a suit I feel excited to wear. Therefore, the even greater news is that the price point isn't outrageous. I have an event on 10-23-2022 that I need this shirt for and right now I am not sure I will have it in time. For an almost $200 shirt, I am not impressed with this company and will probably be switching to Oliver Wicks for all my custom clothing from now on. I can only review the online experience as I haven't had the pleasure of visiting their New York location. I have always had good experiences with Black Lapel. Their ordering system is easy to use, and their options are very comprehensive. I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more selection in fabrics, but what they have is good quality. Since I have only ordered online, it took me a couple of suits to get my measurement profile perfect, but their fit guarantee ensured that my tailoring after the fact was covered (well mostly, I go to an expensive tailor). My favorite thing about Black Lapel is their willingness to do reasonable customizations for little to no cost. Back when they were doing their "un-suit" line (why did you stop?!), they were more than willing match the back of my jacket collar to the color of the pants and vest giving me a very classy custom look. I have several suits from Indochino and wanted a step up and had researched several companies and decided to take a chance with BL. All I can do is echo the other reviews here. This is the only affordable custom suit place with this many raves on Yelp and elsewhere. For the price point, Black Lapel is nothing less than stellar. The biggest difference is with the salespeople, who provide an excellent experience from end to end. My salesperson, Christina, was knowledgeable, friendly, and spared no attention to detail. They only book a few appointments at a time too, so there is no rushing around. The quality is the material is very good, their showroom location is very convenient, the level of customization is great, they know their business, and they are very accommodating customer service-wise. The navy suit I got fit perfectly the first time and was perfect to propose in (which I did a week later). But I would not have look as good doing it without this affordable, high quality suit. The one snafu I had was with their use of Paypal; apparently it isn't integrated fully, and thus using it for checkout in their showroom can be difficult and even result in your stuff being shipped to your place instead of the showroom (showroom is nicer since they can address any fitting issues and they also steam the suit for you); I was able to get this rectified very easily, but it's also worth mentioning. I will be coming here again to get another suit early next year, which should be even more seamless given that they already have my measurements. I've already recommended them to a number of my friends, and will continue to do so as more people ask me about the suit. I came here on a referral from a friend who spoke very highly of this place, and it surely did not disappoint. I was initially fitted by Gloria, who explained each measurement and asked how I wanted my suit and shirt to be fitted; the whole process took around 45 minutes. They have a decent selection to try on in store, but definitely more options online. I ended up choosing the $99 dress shirts (white and light blue), the Traveler Suit in Navy, and a Khaki Suit (still in process until my first suit and shirt measurements were finalized). It took 1 month for the White shirt and Traveler Suit to ship to the store and the follow up fit assessment with Mimi was great. She gave recommendations on the fit of the suit, and I ended up just loosening up the jacket a bit and further taper the pants near the calf. The shirt fit perfectly and I have no complaints. I came back 1 week after for the second fit assessment and was paired up with Emmanuel. He was the nicest and IMO the best Stylist/Showroom Manager and will choose him again for my next suit. I do not believe there is a better Men's tailor in NYC between the $450 to $1,000 range then Black Lapel. You are unlikely to know the suppliers of the fabrics and the suits are put together abroad, but it delivers what you want for what you are paying for. Where Black Lapel really excels against their local competitors is their customer service. This is what earns them a 5 star score based on my experience. The first suit fitting was further away then I would have expected and there were minor adjustments still after the 2nd. However, the important thing is how they responded to my feedback; in every case they took care of me and worked with me to achieve what I wanted. Their social media platforms are informative and they do a good job at keeping you up to date with new designs. They also have a decent range of accessories at fair prices that partner well with their suit range. I believe I have visited most of the leading men's tailors now in NYC. I'm baffled by all the 5-star reviews. The product I ended up with not only took nearly 3 months to complete, but came out mediocre at best. This experience was from last year (Late April to late July) so perhaps they improved. I'm local to their showroom so I stopped by for a fitting. I will say this--I straight up forgot about one of the meetings and either didn't show or showed up way late--they graciously accommodated me. The person measuring me was professional, nice and knowledgeable. The one off-putting thing was that they kept laying on the whole MTM thing way too thick. I'm already in the store and getting fitted, and I felt like I was being sold something I'm already there to purchase. My goal was to try out BL to see if they could make a great suit to wear for my wedding. As a test run, I decided to get measured for a navy suit jacket that I could wear as a blazer. After I was measured, and I customized my jacket features, I placed my order. Two months later, the jacket was ready and in the showroom. The first fitting would have made you believe that the suit was meant for someone larger than me--it was atrocious. I was put in touch with Justin. He had me come in for further alterations. These alterations also took a long time. I found this experience to be frustrating as I was constantly worried about the product I would end up with. After this round, the jacket came back a lot closer to what I was hoping for. My one issue at that point was that the sleeve openings looked like wizard sleeves. My hope was that BL could further adjust this, but they would not. I went to my own tailor to get this fixed. Nearly one year out, I'm still wearing it, begrudgingly, because I paid for it. There is something off about this jacket that's difficult to put my finger on. It sort of looks like a boxy Jos. A bank suit, except I paid more for it, and had to wait longer to get it. When you sell on the concept of made-to-measure, with long turn around times, $400+ for a jacket, it should really come back impeccable. That's not what happened here. I went with another business for my wedding suit--I won't name the name, but it rhymes with FuitFupply. I used their MTM program, and it cost considerably more money, but the suit I got was in a whole different ballpark. This place definitely knows what they are doing. Their stylists are skilled and are actually into fashion and know what they are talking about. I'm surprised how other 'bespoke/custom' clothiers actually have no clue what they are doing. I have a few suits with them and am very happy with the product that I've received for the price. There is nothing better than having a quality suit that fits you well. Give them a try, the first suit will need adjustments after its delivered but it should be good after a few tweaks. When it comes to Made-to-Measure, the guys at Black Lapel have it down to an art. I stumbled onto their website via an online reviewer. After being disappointed time and time again with a different Made-to-Measure company and how specific the reviewer was, I figured why not. Being in Manhattan, I had the privilege of going in and getting measured up in-person. Even though I only had one experience of self-measurement, I wanted to get the numbers right from experts in their trade. I met with one of the co-founders Warren and saw Derek towards the end of the consultation. I came in already knowing what fabrics I wanted in addition to customizations and such. Warren definitely knows his trade well, and even gave me feedback of the suit I was wearing at the time. Not only with what was wrong with my suit, but why it did not fit me well, which is more meaningful than simply stating something is "wrong." Fast forward three weeks or so, when I put on the suit at their partner tailors, I could not stop starring at myself in the mirror. Now I do not have the best-looking body, or am the best looking guy, but damn does a tailored fit works wonder when measured correctly. Though the primary operation is Made-to-Measure via online, this is pretty damn close to "bespoke" quality. Granted I am no expert of the bespoke motif. I definitely recommend Black Lapel when guys are looking to get suits for the first time, or want custom clothing. The pricing is very fair with suits starting at $449 and free shipping. Be careful native New Yorkers, as if you ship into the state, you will get slapped with tax. I definitely want to buy a year-round blazer to wear regularly as the fit and cut are done exceptionally well. I am overdue for a quasi photo-shoot with their suit, but I definitely want to bring the suit to justice! My fiancé bought a $1000 bespoke suit for our wedding. It arrived baggy as a 90s Michael Jordan get-up - nothing bespoke about it at all and most of his Suit Supply suits fit much better. The suit arrived in late March 2020 - a time when it was impossible to go back for alterations in person, and even if we could, they only cover $75 in alterations for a suit that would need a lot of help. My family are doctors and teachers, all of whom were at risk and many of whom fell debilitatingly ill over the pandemic, so we were stressed out and missed the email saying they extended their alterations to 90 days. We reached out a few months ago to see if they would help us out with alterations given how poorly fitted the suit was - customer service was bluntly unhelpful, didn't care, and then unresponsive when we followed up. I had a wonderful experience working with these guys. For years I struggled with off the rack suits, never being able to find something that fit me at a reasonable price. When I finally discovered Black Lapel about three or four years ago it was like manna from heaven. I felt like I would never have to stress again about finding a good fitting suit. For someone with odd body proportions like myself, having the option of a made-to-measure suit for the price of a mid-range off the rack garment was truly amazing. I received my first Black Lapel suit about 2 weeks ago. The cloth is excellent and the fit is pretty good. It was my first time, as I said, and I measured from home, so I think I need to refine my measurements a little more, but overall the fit was great. Slim, but very moveable. I had to take about 2" off the waist on the trousers, and I should probably take about 1/8" - 1/4" on the jacket sleeves. The packaging was nothing to complain about, they threw in a complimentary duffle bag, and of course, the $75 alterations credit. Perhaps the thing that impressed me the most was customer service. Black Lapel has some of the best, most personable, most helpful customer service I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I wanted a new suit and my friend recommended BL so I gave them a shot. My experience was a bit mixed. I had to come back multiple times to get the suit to fit right. At certain times, I felt like some of the fit recommendations/suggestions were more in the interest of the company (so that they don't have to spend the money for the alterations). At the same time, they were accommodating to get everything done for me...but that's what the baseline MTM experience should be, right? It was also a pain scheduling appointment after appointment because I had to keep coming back (the next available appointments were 3+ weeks out). Total Waste of Money! Warning: Get their return policy in writing! After much anticipation, my custom suit finally arrived today. You can only imagine my disappointment when I put it on to find that the new suit did not fit ANYWHERE! Literally no measurement is correct. Honestly I think they must have used someone else's measurements in China. I don't believe this suit would fit my 13 year old boy. After all of the time I spent with them trying to get this suit right, to have the measuring done so wrong, or to be lost in translation at the manufacturer, or the wrong person's measurements used ... the result is exceedingly disappointing. I have contacted their "concierge", Who has asked for photos. I am not hopeful of a good outcome. Sadly their work is just terrible. Update: I was offered $175 by the "concierge" to have the suit worked on by my local tailor. I don't know how $175 is going to completely remake a suit which is off by many inches in every direction. This was not the company policy as it was told to me in the NYC show room. What I was told was that they would pay for a local tailor to measure where the suit was off and then I could send it back for a remake. read more

This is the first time I have ever gotten a custom suit. I'll tell you that I will continue to get my suits this way. There is nothing like getting something that was created and fitted just for you. Quality of the cloths and suits are amazing! First off, Black Lapel just sounds like quality. When you walk into the studio, the first thing you see is a friendly receptionist and nice little waiting area. (I recommend that you book an appointment through their website). From there, my suit expert, Molly, guided me and my wife throughout the entire suit fitting process. She professionally took my measurements and told both me and my wife about the different styles. I went with two suits (cuz why not). Suits got delivered in about 4 weeks. We went to the second fitting, and made the necessary alterations. Throughout the entire time, what I loved, was that Molly said that these suits are made for me; and to make sure that the fit was exactly what I wanted. She was never pushy and super professional.
