This is the type of small business that you will love to support because everyone from the owners, managers, and employees care about the customer and their needs. They never apply high pressure sales like some other stores, instead they get to know you and learn about your style and taste and customize the shopping experience to you. In from out of town, was let in, multiple sales people, did not get greeted. Milled around for 5 minutes with my AMEX platinum card and a 200 k income. Lots of folks ignoring me. Finally a guy asks if I need assistance, I asked about a blazer he passed me to another dude, he threw one on me and left to help another customer. After a few more minutes another fellow reluctantly came up and asked if I'd been helped and I said...I guess. I asked about casual pants and he showed me a pair. Skinny leg pants...nah.... 6+ Star Experience. It's a crazy story, but let me make it short. I was 15 days away from my wedding (in LA), living in DC, and all I had was a botched custom tux. After emailing Ken and the team at Rothmans - complete strangers became unbelievable partners. Ken and his team at Rothmans went to work before I even arrived to help me assure me they had what I was looking for (a Navy tux). They went the extra mile before they ever spoke to me, taking the tuxedos I was interested *outside* in the natural light so I could see their true color (something no other store thought to do.) With their responsiveness and expansive selection/inventory I purchased a last minute train ticket with one destination in mind, Rothmans. Today, service and vision separate the good from the great. Ken and his team at Rothmans are not only experts, but they practice their craft with a level of passion and dedication I have never experienced. When I arrived I met my "fairy g-dshopper" Maris. Maris spent the next *3 hours* with me - as my mirror, consultant and guide she ensured that I took everything into consideration and cheered me along the way. Rothmans is the kind of business that justifies the multi-billion dollar valuation for Groupon -- what supreme power other than an inexplicable force of habit or a 60% off coupon can bring you to Rothmans? The store has a little bit of everything--for "work, play and black tie events". For business clothes, one can find suits, sportcoats, dress shirts, ties and shoes. They have cleverly instituted a corporate program to provide discounts through HR departments of companies. Casual clothes come in the form of t-shirts, outerwear, a large selection of jeans and casual shoes. And the vault downstairs can satisfy your tuxedo cravings adequately. The staff is everywhere you go. But all said and done, I was left with more questions than answers. What can an independent multi-brand men's clothing store do in prime Union Square real estate, besides lose money? Provide friendly service? Carry an assortment that is unequal parts Syms, Brooks Brothers and Century 21? Have more salespeople than customers? I did manage to buy a couple of tired-looking cashmere knits to put my Groupon to use, but made a mental note to never return to Rothmans. read more

Maybe it was an off time? I walked in with several sales associates by the front door and wasn't even acknowledged. When I went to look at shoes and shirts, I was still ignored. Finally, after asking the cashier for help, she went to look for someone, but with some hesitance. Once a person was found, the guy just looked at me and went back to doing whatever he was doing. Went in there to buy a suit, shoes and maybe some t-shirts. I was ready to spend and the folks here treated me like I was invisible. Really not nice, especially considering that anyone who walks into a place like this knows it's going to get expensive. But seriously, a business clothing store without a variety of shirt colors? no hunter green? no red? no pastels? Exactly one French cuff shirt? Step your game up, Rothman's. Their cuff link selection is limited at best, and quite tacky. I cant go out with martini or wine bottles hanging off my wrist if I want to be taken seriously. I'll keep this simple. Many men don't enjoy clothes shopping. I detest it. Yet, I truly enjoy going to Rothmans. That's a bold statement for me since it's a clothing store. I'm more a restaurant guy. A capable salesperson saves me a ton of time and minimizes the stress level. They have a well thought out selection of clothing and dare me to think outside of my box (which I really need to do). It's not inexpensive, but quality lasts and is worth every penny. Ken, alone, is worth the price of admission (small joke there, of course it's free to walk into the store!) Of the seven people who reviewed the store in the last year, only one had a bad experience. That can happen to the best of places........and this is the best of places. read more

I found out one week prior that I was able to attend the White House Coorespondents Dinner this year--yes--the year Trump did not attend. I quickly went home to try on the tux I purchased 10-yrs ago only to find the jacket was HUGE on me. I had a problem! I'm a bit of a clothes snob so I didn't want to rent a tux and show up at such a prestiegious event in rental wear appropriate for a high school prom. I also didn't have time to get something custom which is usually the route I take. Fortunately people at work suggested I call Rothmans and here was my experience: I went to the Rothmans website and saw their claim of how they could help someone pick out a tux and tailor it within the span of week. I was going to put this to the test. I went to Rothmans on a Saturaday, found a nice midnight blue tux and stated I needed it by Thu as I was heading to DC Fri morning. Not only was Thu ok but they said they'd have the tux ready on Wed in case there was further need for tailoring. I showed up on Wed, tried on my tux and everything fit perfectly. I wish I had more to add to the story but this is it. Rothmans held true to their word--they helped me find a tux and had it perfectly tailored in days. The process could not have been easier, Rothmans could not have been more helpful/professional and I could not have looked better if I don't say so myself. If you're in a situation where you need nice looking and properly tailored clothing in a short amount of time--Rothmans is your answer. It certainly was for me!! read more

I bumped into Rothmans one noon finally! I work around this store and have walked by many times but thought it must be an expensive store and doubted to go in. But I found this store carrying very good collection of shoes and some cute accessories. Didn't expect the store to have quite some variety. I scammed around the suit selection althought didn't quite pay attention about the brands. But what I found most exciting about them is a surprise sale of shoes from Hugo Boss, Cole Haan, to Allen Elmonds and the price was $59 a pair! That's a killer deal!!! The sizes are all 8-9, which are basically mine. I bought a pair of Allen Elmonds Monstrap and a pair of Cole Haan boots. Awesome! Then I looked around their full-priced selection of shoes, and they're also very nice and polished styles. I would come back again for sure! read more

I used to enjoy coming here, but my latest experience will be my last. I was buying two sport coats, and the selection offered was a little scary, all wide plaids and horse blankets (I am too told for these). We settled on two coats that were more subdued and had a fitting. The tailor did a few swipes and that was that. While I was there a woman in charge came to criticize my salesman about something right in front of me, which was offputting to say the least. That salesman, my favorite, has since retired. When I went back to get the coats, they were very confused as to where they were, what date I was expected, etc. No apparent system in place. Tried on the suits and they fit very badly. the sleeves were like spirals when I moved even a little. The tailor returned, complained to me a bit, like it was my fault, more chalk marks, and took them away. Now a week later, I'm back and once again it takes them a bit too long to figure out where my coats are. Try them on, and and then still fit badly and the chalk marks are all still on the coats. Were they really altered? They insist they were. Felt the same to me. The owner appeared and tried on one of the coats, made note of what he saw and disappeared with it downstairs. I tried on the second, and it made me look like Donald Duck (OK, I could stand to lose some weight.) At these prices I was not interested in settling for something I did not like (I can do that for a lot less at Century 21) so I opted for a refund, which to their credit they readily offered. They told me that with my sloping shoulders, I was too difficult to fit and should basically lower my expectations. Nice. I do not expect to return, which is too bad, as I have come to this store many times before. As the saying goes, it takes a lot of work to get a customer, but it is very easy to lose one. read more

This review is for the Scarsdale store. They really are fantastic. I was unable to buy a suit from them, I needed something in a hurry, and they did not have much in my size. However, they were extremely helpful. I ended up finding a suit online, and took it to a local tailor, who ... well did a horrible job. I called the guys at Rothman's, told them what happened, and they had me come in so their tailor could fix it (two day turn around). They never tried to pressure me into a purchase, and were more than happy to help me get this suit fixed up. Next time, when I am not in a rush to get a suit, I will be sure to get it from Rothman's. I have shopped at Rothman's on many occasions and in both of their locations and never been disappointed, they have a great boutique atmosphere that is easy to shop. They have an amazing, fine tuned selection of sportswear. Rothman's gives you a great selection basics like jeans, tees and sweaters with out being overwhelming and I always find great trendy pieces for my boyfriend as well to keep him up to date! They also have a great selection of suits and a very knowledgeable staff. For the guy who doesn't like to shop this is a great one stop shop to dress your guy for the season (and have him look good)! - I have always left more then pleased with selection, prices and experience. My fiance' and I have lived half a block away from this store for years and didn't have a chance to drop by until recently and we were impressed. The attendant, Vince, was extremely helpful and made the visit so easy. We were looking for a new suit for the rehearsal dinner and my fiance' really wasn't expecting to find anything, but boy were we wrong. And to think we were going to trek it on over to Macy's. There were so many beautiful suits that they will custom fit. He also decided to buy a couple of custom made shirts as it is difficult to find shirts that fit him correctly. Custom shirts take about 3 weeks, but the suit should be ready in a week or two. We never felt rushed. The employees never looked bored or impatient. The store was well organized and quiet. Even the other customers were helpful! I cannot comment on the price because as a female I have no idea what men's clothing typically costs, but I can tell that my fiance was surprised that it wasn't more than he payed. I really like this store and the one in Scarsdale. If you are a fashion maven who wants a huge selection or to hunt for your own deals then maybe this isn't the place. But for someone that wants a nice affordable curated collection of clothes this is the spot. You'll also sometimes find some great deals on premium brands as sales often apply to the whole store. It's an excellent place to shop for yourself of for a gift for dad/boyfriend/husband. Way easier to get stylishly outfitted here than a department store or a tired branded store (i.e. Brooks Brothers) I think some of the negative reviews on here are people with an Agenda, want a different shopping experience (huge far reaching collection), or have unrealistic expectations about service. read more

I have shopped at Rothmans over the past decade - it was never a place I would go regularly, but would pop in when in Union Square, as they would often have interesting selection at reasonable prices. Most recently, had a terrible experience a few months ago when purchasing formal wear. firstly, the first salesperson was not overly knowledgeable about the options available including customization of accessories. The next salesperson was more helpful but not overly friendly. She was supposed to get back to us in a few days after checking with their suppliers, but it took several weeks and we had to reach back out to her multiple times to get an answer. More egregious, was our treatment at payment - the cashier (an average height, younger, male with a shaved/buzzed head) was exceptionally rude to the point where his colleagues were clearly shocked at his behavior and standing around wide eyed and aghast. My then-fiancé now-husband and I came here to shop for a suit for him to wear to our wedding. I have to confess, I was a little jealous! The service and attention he got were better here than what I received at many of the bridal salons (and I went to A LOT of those!). The salespeople really know menswear, and they'll tell you the truth about what looks good. I've been back several times (my brother in law bought a suit here, too!) and was always made to feel like a VIP. I really appreciate that the sales associates aren't pushy - they're not trying to make a sale, they're trying to make you look good! We were especially impressed with how fabulous (and relatively affordable) the custom-made shirts were. My husband is tall and slim, and it's hard to find shirts that are flattering, but he looks like James Bond in the ones he got here! (OK, maybe I'm biased). Rothmans has a decent selection, and is better than some of the options out there (Macys and other tourist traps), but if you need anything extra-special, or extra-affordable, or extra-lookin good, they just don't got it. They're completely average in all ways, except prices are high but so are the amount of salespeople they've got to help you, so it all evens out. Unlike most of the major men's clothing stores -- Barney's, Bloomingdales, Bergdorfs, Saks, Brooks Brothers -- where either they carry only trendy, millennial styles, the prices start at $1,500 or the style stinks -- Rothman's has it all. They haven't given up on us Boomers -- at least not yet. They have an excellent selection of reasonably priced, high quality, stylish suits that fit guys like me. I went in to buy a suit for my wedding, but was immediately put off by the pushy salesman. He had no interest in what I was asking for and kept trying to push suits twice outside my budget. The salesperson continually disregarded what I said I wanted, and even used threatening language when I said I did not like a certain suit. Aside from the horrible service experience, their selection was surprisingly limited for a specialty store, and I was quoted a tailoring service that would take a month and a half (compared to 10 days at a department store)! I wandered in here on the recommendation of my shirt tailor. Initially I planned on scoping out wedding tuxedo styles, still planning on purchasing custom. I left having purchased a tuxedo. I feel compelled to write a review as I consider this among my best shopping and service experiences in New York. I strongly dislike shopping - if I want to get a deal I feel like it takes too much looking and if I want good service I can't stomach paying full sticker. - Surprising inventory of slim fitting tuxedos. I am tall (6' 5") and slender. I tried on four tuxes that met the bar for purchase. Never expected to find this kind of inventory. My sales rep (Mark) indicated that Rothman's specifically procures this style, a style I find completely lacking in most stores. - Excellent service. I spent 45 minutes with Mark. Without being overbearing, he meticulously criticized each of the garments and their fit. I never felt like he was selling - he seemed singlemindedly focused on getting me the best fitting tux. He noticed a variety of discriminating details and ultimately suggested a brand that was lower margin for him that the alternative, for which I could personally barely observe a difference. - Price: $2,200 retail tux for $900. Prior to checking the price tag I thought there was no chance I could afford what I was trying on. I didn't even bother negotiating because I was so happy with the service. - Limited, Broad Inventory. Perusing the rest of the store, they stock a wide variety of quality items. No wasted time sorting through aisles and aisles of ill fitting stock. If it's in their store, it's probably good. This is my new favorite men's store. I practically walked back in to purchase a sports jacket - a purchase I have been putting off for two years but saw two excellent specimens while exiting the store. Approx. four sales people on the floor on a sleepy Saturday afternoon and I was not asked once if I needed assistance (I was browsing pretty hard too - which then turned into an experiment to see if I could prompt someone to ask me if I needed help)!
