Ken and Jim at Rothman's did a great job helping me select suits for our wedding party. These guys have impeccable taste and made sure we all looked great while not breaking the bank. All of the coordination with the groomsman was handled by Rothmans, taking a lot off my plate during a hectic time The Union Square store is very convenient for getting everyone together. As the groom, I received many compliments on the Italian suit I wore at the wedding and the sharp blazer and pants at the rehearsal dinner. Normally, I would just pass this off as people being nice, but I felt good and I knew I looked my best because of their help. Great professional and knowledgeable staff that got the job done! Disappointed with my experience with Rothmans. Approx. four sales people on the floor on a sleepy Saturday afternoon and I was not asked once if I needed assistance (I was browsing pretty hard too - which then turned into an experiment to see if I could prompt someone to ask me if I needed help)! At least try to do your job. (See a few reviews below from Daniel - this doesn't seem to be a one-off issue) The funny part came when I bought something and two sale people suddenly awoke and scrambled to ring me up. Really sad that negative experiences prompt reviews but I just popped into the store to purchase a few quick Christmas presents. First off, there were more salespeople than customers in the store 2 days before Christmas (eep!) but no one offered to help me after some pretty serious browsing. After waiting for someone to get me the correct shoe size, I walked up to the register and made eye contact with a man thinking he would help ring me up while the other salesperson gift wrapped my purchase. Instead, he made eye contact and proceeded to ignore me after I asked to be rung up. Right away the person helping me ran to a register and mumbled "that's the owner" as if that explained his 'tude. Clearly the owner is not interested in acknowledging the presence of customers in his store. What a shame--won't be back. read more

We aren't a particularly easy group to work with, and he made sure that we were taken care of, knowing our names when we walked in every time, and working in a professional and courteous manner. Let me first start by saying that I have been using Yelp for years but have never written a review, until now.. I first visited Rothman's two years ago to purchase a jacket and several pairs of slacks at the recommendation of a colleague - "Century 21 prices but Sak's service" was how the store was described to me, sounds too good to be true? It is. The jacket still hangs in my closet but the slacks are a different story. One would expect that when you pay to have something tailored it will fit correctly and last - I was wrong. After wearing two of the three pairs of pants just two times, both had a hole in the seat along the seams. OK, fine, let's take it back and see how the "Saks service" is. I will give the purchasing manager credit here, he carefully listened and had the tailor restitch the pants - lovely I remember thinking, will come back the next time I need to stock up.. About 3 months ago I was in need of a few new suits and so was my roommate. We went to the store and were greeted by a salesperson with Edward Scissor Hand's style hair and a cheesy sales pitch. He went on to point at a suit rack for my roommate after he was visibly frustrated by the poor service and he (said roommate) went on to exit the store while I paid for a new pair of slacks. What really bothered me was that the clerk went on to make a comment that my friend should shop on a "Big and Tall" store - this is coming from the guy that DIDN'T EVEN TAKE A MEASUREMENT! Fine, I took my pants and walked out. Guess what happened? Two days later the pants ripped, AGAIN! I went back to the store, not an easy hike living on the UWS and asked for them to be restitched and shipped to me if possible as I did not have time to wait 30 minutes... "no can do" was the response. I waited at the expense of an appointment.. It's really a shame because the owners are nice guys and the store has great potential. But for now, it seems Rothman's has lost touch with its customers. Who knows, maybe their new location will bring better service but I for one am not going to take the time to find out. read more

I had a great experience getting a tuxedo for my wedding here. They also did a great job with the tux for my dad and one my brother. I mostly worked with Raul, who was consistently very helpful and attentive. Basically, when I first went in, he helped me find a tuxedo that my wife and I loved immediately, at a very reasonable price. Over the following months, I went in or e-mailed with him several more times to make sure the fitting was correct, pick out the accessories, etc. Everything went the same way: they immediately found me exactly what I wanted, and I paid less for it than I anticipated. For example, Raul helped me design a custom shirt and tie; they cost less than what I have paid for non-custom shirts and ties at a high end department store, yet they were better quality and exactly what I wanted. We also got beautiful ties for my entire wedding party at a great price. Maybe their most impressive work was on my brother's tux. He is currently living in Central America, so he got measured there and I gave Raul the measurements. The plan was that we would go in when my brother arrived in the states, two days before the wedding, and the tux would be waiting. They would get any last-minute alterations done for us once he tried it on. Well, somehow the tux basically fit perfectly; I think they maybe made one minor adjustment overnight. It just shows how flexible they were in meeting our needs. Outside of tuxes, I've bought a number of casual items from Rothman's. While they were not cheap, I think the prices are on par for what you would pay at a department store or boutique. They stock really nice, quality clothing. I've loved everything I've bought. My dad actually bought two suits when he went in to get measured for the tux, and he's really happy with them. Bottom line: Rothman's has a great selection of high-quality formal and casual clothing, as well as fantastic customer service. I would highly, highly recommend them. read more

What you get from this spacious men's clothing store is something you don't find too often anymore: great selection, knowledgeable staff, nice value, and a pleasant experience. Someone is always around to answer a question or find you another size, without harassing you like some other stores tend to do. Just went to Rothman's today (Sunday the 17th). I was looking for suit pants as a temporary one time replacement for my own. I asked the man who was there (he has glasses) whom has to rudely argue and tell me pants wouldn't work because they wouldn't match my suit... I understand that... I just needed pants similar for a one time event, I was in a bind. Throughout the whole process he was abrasive and condescending. I was even arguing with him on the timeline for losing weight (honestly ridiculous). When I told him this wouldn't work I changed and came out with the suits and pants and found that he was missing. I saw him across the store talking to someone else. Very poor customer service and honestly a terrible salesman. I buy many sports jackets and suits all the time, and I have to say hands down the worst customer service I ever received (go to suit supply, hall madden, Brooklyn tailors or anywhere else instead). I ended up going somewhere else today and bought two suits. Because of this employee, Rothmans lost a potential customer for two suits today and a future customer. read more

I've been visiting New York on business for 25+ years, how the h*** did I miss out on Rothmans? This is the perfect place to go if you need a single item -- usually my dilemma on business trips -- or want to tune up your entire wardrobe. Really well curated selection (not a ton of SKUs but well selected in each category) all with a contemporary feel. Think Barney's without the attitude and much better prices. Or maybe SuitSupply with less of a Euro obsession. Also the service was fantastic. All the sales people were casual (not pushy), helpful and friendly. I literally don't know how I slept on this place for so long, but it will definitely be on my itinerary going forward. Now if only they'd open a branch in Los Angeles where there's a major gap between generic department stores and all the west side boutiques with nosebleed prices. read more

Rothmans was fantastic! Went in to buy a suit for my husband. Jennifer was attentive and even engaged our 8 year old son, who has special needs and has trouble sitting still, especially in new places. Jennifer helped my husband and I pick out the perfect suit, shirt, tie and socks, and we didn't break the bank. She also assured me the suit will be ready for our older son's bar mitzvah. Ok overpriced clothes but taloring service is the pits. Arrived on agreed date to be told "its not ready. When can you come back?" Had to insist since I was leaving town the next morning, which i said many times when I agreed to have them do the work.. Was then told basically "ok maybe". Got manager of Rothmans involved and clothing was altered in half an hr. No apology. No offer to discount. Insisted on ridiculous $20 fee to hem outside pants. Store manager says "its not us, they're a separate business". Well its a business they should get out of. They have no clue about customer service. Plenty of better places to shop. Rothmans has a really nice selection of different brands of menswear. I entered on the side with all of the suit jackets and it was a little overwhelming, but I liked their open floor plan that makes it feel like an adventure checking out each section. It would have been nice to be welcomed right when I entered the store, but once someone came over to help me, they were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, I came in looking for something specific--a Haspel seersucker suit--and was informed they are not carrying it this season. Bummer! read more

There are lots of reasons why I enjoy shopping at Rothmans, but it all comes back to one thing: customer care. There is a great collection of clothing here; a well curated collection of men's fashion from top to bottom -- suits, sports jackets, shirts, shoes, jeans, etc. Everything from business to casual, workday to weekend. The staff is attentive and well informed and more than willing to work with customers to find the right item and the right fit. And, if you have any post purchase issues they are more than happy to work with you to resolve them. They are committed to maintaining a long term working relationship with their customers, and it shows. There is a great family feeling here. It is not at all like shopping in a big box store. It is, in fact, like shopping at the kind of neighborhood shop New York used to have so many of. Shop here (and for that matter in the Scarsdale branch) and you will see what i mean...you won't regret it. read more

@ the park avenue location. I needed to buy a suit for my sister's wedding and I normally wouldn't shop in a store like this but my mom said it's important I look nice and my dad said he'd pay, so here I was. It's one of those stores where there are five employees for every customer and when I walked in I was that customer. I felt out of place, sure, but it was for my sister, so I went ahead. In the middle of the store I was greeted by a man impeccably dressed as must be required in such a place. He was probably 50 or maybe a little younger and his product-filled hair reached 6 inches off his head, not unlike a Who. From Whoville. I asked him if they sold trousers for suspenders and his face was incredulous, as if he didn't understand the question, no, as if it never occurred to him that anyone might ever ask such a question. "Well no," he said, "buttons are added by the tailor after you buy the pants. Any pant can be tailored for suspenders." I said, oh, feeling stupid and even more out of place. He directed me to the back where the formal pants were and I was glad he didn't follow behind me. There, the younger attendant who was nice enough showed me a few options but none were what I was after. He said I should look around up front one more time and we go that way together, finding a few pairs that were closer to what I wanted. The first man came over to us, I think he was wearing glasses but now I can't remember. He asked me if I wear suspenders all the time and I say, no, I've never worn them actually. And he said, "Oh, I thought you must wear them a lot." He says this ironically and I know he was being ironic because I am not ignorant of callousness in people and I am self-aware enough to admit that yes, I was out of place in this store, in front of this man who must be a lifelong men's wear attendant, groomed everyday for the nines. He told me the thing to do is buy the suspenders before the pants and he brings over a catalogue of only suspenders. He flips through the pages showing me the collection, they're all very nice but priced at $200, He has a customer, he says, who owns every pair in the book, there are at least a hundred. He says he sold suspenders for someone going to the Oscars, he says he sold some to someone going to the Emmy's. I thought, well you could have stopped with the Oscars. He and the younger man step away, but only a foot or so and I leaf through the pages knowing I am not going to buy any and then, totally within earshot, the man says to the younger: "You know, it's funny. Did you read that article in Esquire about wearing a suit with a backpack?" And he motions his hand back and forth near his neck in the universal sign for decapitation and at the same time he makes that slurping noise when you suck the spit from your mouth. And it's probably obvious, but I was wearing a backpack over a sports coat at just that moment and I immediately walked out of the store with tail tucked between legs but more accurately with a backpack scrunching up the shoulders of my jacket. read more

this location (not sure if there are others) wasn't exactly the best experience. they have a nice range and decent selection for whatever you are looking for.. however it took me and my husband 15 minutes to be helped or serviced by anyone. I was acknowledged when we walked in (so they obviously knew we were there) and by that i mean eye connection was made.. maybe a nod. then nothing. for. 15. minutes. not even joking!!! store wasn't even crowded. sadly we were in a rut and needed a suit ASAP, they had what we were looking for.. besides customer service.. so we went with them. regretful. read more

I have been a shopper at Rothman's for the past few years. My latest experience was not so great (about three weeks ago). I found a couple of nice shirts to send as a gift. Both were on sale which was a nice bonus. When I got to the counter the woman at the register was more interested in texting on her cell phone. When she FINALLY rang up my shirts she charged me full price for one of the shirts. When I caught it (after it was rung) and nicely pointed out the mistake she became angry and argued with me. I had to go and get the sign to show her and she still argued with me. Another sales person came by and confirmed that the shirt was on sale (a $90.00) difference. She was irritated as I had her void out the entire sale and start all over again. She kept texting while she was muttering under her breath and re-ringing my purchases. She never appologized or even looked up at me when the transactioin was FINALLY complete. I left with a pretty bad taste in my mouth. read more

Service was rude and pretentious. But then again, that might be the vibe that they want to project. If so, they have done well. All in all, it was a mashup of Banana Republic and Century 21 but then again the service was what made it distinctive, in an unfortunate way--at least for shoppers not looking for attitude. I've made thousands in suit purchases here over the years. My most recent suit purchases will sadly be my last. The quality of staff has gone from one of knowledgeable professionals to hack sales people that couldn't be more interested in anything other than ringing the register. To boot, I picked up my clothes to find that my purchases were now on sale - the old staff would have either advised of pending sale or adjusted. New staff wouldn't even acknowledge. read more

Here are reasons why I gave Rothmans five stars. They outfitted me with two suits, a bunch of dress slacks and sports coats and shirts. 1. Service: I received the "old school" treatment - attentive, patient, helpful, can size up a customer's likes/dislikes and sizing, professional and gentlemanly. Peter, who has been with the store for decades, and Ken gave me personal attention. They took note of my style, and gave me a lot of choices for suits, sports coats, slacks, etc. that were in line with what I like. They could immediately see whether something I tried on fit or looked right. Peter was helping at least five customers the same time as me, but it felt like I was his only client. Beyond being helpful, Ken is very personable and an easy-going guy - remembers names, faces and style. 2. Selection: When you walk in the store, and you're over 35, you may not think that they will have your type of dress clothing. That is far from the situation - they have an amazing selection of all kinds of business attire, with suits ranging from very good to exceptional in quality and all different styles. Also, they have more manufacturers then I see at nice department stores. I always find it hard to find a variety of sports coats, and Rothmans has a lot to offer, even someone picky like me (I tend to shop at the Brooks Bros flagship store, and they have nothing on Rothmans sports coat selection). They had varied colors in dress slacks, covering the range of "neutral" that I like to wear. They had plenty of dress shirts in all different, yet not "out there," styles. 3. Prices: The prices for suits, dress pants and sports coats were on par with what I see at Brooks Bros, and less than what I have seen at Nordstrom (another place I tend to shop). Given that there was a sale, the prices turned out to be very good, and some of the markdowns really surprised me. Yes, I bought more than I thought so the total was quite a lot, but that was because there was so much I needed. My only issue is with the shirts - they are a bit pricey, although I have to say that they have excellent quality and material, and fit me well (I'm not so trim as I used to be, and the shirts fit amazingly well considering my newly found girth). They seem to have a decent amount of sales, so you may want to wait for one. 4. One-stop shopping: Maybe this should be reason number one. If you're like me, I hate clothing shopping. I tend to limit myself to one or two stores, and do it all at once. Well, Rothmans is just the kind of place to do that. I imagine if I had been shopping for some cotton blazers, they would have had them as well. Although I didn't buy any, I saw plenty of great looking ties and really colorful socks. It's all there, clothing-wise. The only room for improvement I noted was charging for basic tailoring (e.g., hem). However, I had my tailoring done at their Scarsdale location, which may be different than NYC. These guys have earned my loyalty, and I plan to go back for some seasonal items in the next year. When I was a kid, my Dad took me with him when he bought a suit at the old Rothmans, and although he found another place he preferred on the LES, he always said that if they can outfit you right for the right price and excellent service, keep going back. read more

Horrible selection of clothing combined with unknowledgeable staff makes for one of the worst men's stores in the city. If your tacky or don't mind paying a little more for less than come here. Be beyond certain that what you are buying you absolutely, positively want, because they have a no refund policy and if anything is even marked down, they won't touch it again. Horrible. Even Century 21 allows for returns. If they are that desperate to make a sale and keep an item from never coming back, maybe they should upgrade their merchandise. read more
