This old-school Venice restaurant offers a charming ambiance with no piped-in music, decent lighting, and almost comfortable chairs. The meal started on a high note with some very tasty bread. The tomato and mozzarella dish was a standout--the tomatoes were fresh, and the mozzarella was perfectly chilled, complemented by a nice sprig of basil. The carbonara, however, was a bit underwhelming. The pasta was slightly undercooked, and while the pancetta added flavor, the small, sliced pieces didn't quite hit the mark. Notably, they used cream in the dish, and there were no peas, as is common in the U.S. It still tasted good, but it lacked the authenticity I was hoping for. The steak was tender and adequately cooked, though the seasoning was just so-so. The mushrooms, however, really elevated the dish and made it more enjoyable. Unfortunately, the service was almost non-existent. I had to get out of my seat three times to summon the waiter--once to further cook my steak, another time for water, and finally to request the check. With few other diners in the restaurant, this level of service was disappointing and inexcusable. Great vibe with nice outside seating area. That and bruschetta were about the only positive things about this place. Way overpriced for what you get. We spent 8 days in Italy and this place was 2.5 x any other place we ate. Also, only place we ate where automatic 15% gratuity was added to bill. Much better places in Venice!!! read more

Great location and fantastic outdoor dining with movies on the Venetian plaster building. That was really cool. Inside, it's like a party, everybody is celebrating, singing along and sharing stories. Great vibe. Good energy. The meal was OK. The best thing that I ate was the Bronzino & Bucatini. The scampi prawns, I would not recommend. I thought it was going to be a scampi with pasta but that was my fault for not asking. The scampi prawns were a bit over done and very little meat. The rest of the meal was amazing. We stopped here cause it was crowded. But looks can be snd in this case we're deceiving. The food was mediocre at best. My husband's pasta dish had hardly any meat and a bland sauce. My lasagna was all pasta with a bit of meat crumbles and the same bland sauce. The dishes were 24 euro each and a glass of wine 13 euro. Much more than in other restaurants we've been to. Especially since this is on a back street. The server was abrupt and not courteous. And our bill included an obligatory 15% tip on top of the regular seating charge. We have never had tip included in our bills in all the restaurants we've been too and 15% is steep for the optional Italian customary fee. All in all it was an expensive dinner with nothing to feel good about. On top of that the bathroom doors were broken so women inadvertently opened the door and the room was filthy. Exactly what you'd expect - and are warned about - when you go for a meal in central Venice. We were in a fairly large group and returned to a romantic little square not far from St Marco where some of us had enjoyed a coffee in the afternoon ... It was just warm enough to sit outside which accounts for at least one of the stars. Service was impeccable albeit a touch formal perhaps. You are obviously not warned about any of the hidden charges, i.e. that every time you ask for more bread the cover charge goes up (this is in addition to service charge). Some of the fish dishes are charged by weight, so best avoided if you want to stay in control of your bill. I shared a beautiful seabream baked in salt with a friend and the food was delicious - but also the most expensive half fish I've ever eaten at £55 per person, served with three sprigs of asparagus and two artichoke hearts. read more

We were lured by the ambiance of this historical restaurant despite the unfriendly waiter. However, the food was mediocre at best, not reflecting at all the descriptions of the lucullan pleasures to be expected at that place. But the worst thing: I found one item in the bill at almost double the price listed in the menu. My complaint only added to the unfriendliness of the waiter without causing him to utter at least an apology. Instead, I received only the corrected bill after a while. So, check your bill carefully. They try to cheat you there! What a pity for a restaurant dating back from 1780. read more

Came for after dinner drinks and tiramisu with some locals. We were greeted and seated quickly. Service was always with a smile and we were made to feel so welcome. My rating is clearly a bit higher than others here but I think that is based on something else. It always helpful to know well connected locals. Not sure about the dinner choices but our tiramisu was on point and the wine...I'm sitting here dreaming of it. I'll be stopping in again on my return. read more

I'm just going to simmer on that name for a moment. Colombo. I was really hoping my server would be a Peter Falk look-alike that spoke past a shriveled cigar while wrapped in a rumpled raincoat. So here's the story: if you opt for the optional night excursion with the Globus tour, you take a water taxi down the Grand Canal near St. Mark's Square. From there, you squeeze and meander through narrow roads (they call them roads, apparently) until stumbling into the fenced off serving area of al Colombo. It was there were our group found our seats. Reviewing Colombo will be difficult considering we enjoyed a fixed menu with complimentary wine. Complimentary. Wine. That gets an extra point right there. I can't even remember what I ate. I needed to look at pictures. I didn't get horizontal drunk, just slightly diagonal, which can get slightly disorientating given most of Venice looks askew. The food was simple: prosciutto, risotto, pasta--all the standard staples of Italian cuisine...or rather the staples of clichéd Italian cuisine. I was honestly getting tired of it by this point. Thankfully, it wasn't bland, just not extraordinary. The question is, what would I rather have, bland cuisine and free wine, or good food? The answer of course, is good food. If I want wine, I'll buy it. This was yet another nail in the coffin on Globus and their included meals. Colombo was slightly above average in this regard. But this was not really an included meal, it was a paid optional excursion. In that, I cannot recommend it. For the price paid, one could easily walk to Colombo and just order an unquestionably better meal. Alas, unlike the hotels, Colombo isn't mentioned on the Globus itinerary, so there isn't really any way for someone to take this warning and save themselves the excursion price. Oh, there's just one more thing...(yes, I went there) a plaque greeted us at the entrance of what I believed to be an explorer. Yes ma'am, Colombo is named after Christopher Columbus. The food was by far the worst in my stay in Italy. Would not feed my dogs the food I was served. My clams spaghetti made me feel sick after and the clams were also very small with a decent amount of them being empty and the pasta was so oily. RIP OFF!!!! read more

I'm Venice on our honeymoon. This place was recommended to us by our private tour guide. In the past, this has been a good way to find a great restaurant for me. After this experience, I have to rethink the entire process. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem paying steep prices for exceptional food, service, view, ANYTHING, but this place offered none of those. Each item we ordered was priced about double what the market value is in Venice. The food was average at best. I guess the only redeeming value for them is the artwork. Perhaps they have their patrons help pay for the pieces? I would suggest save about half the euros you will spend here and look elsewhere. There HAVE to be plenty of great places to eat here. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. We stumbled on their location looking for a couple of other restaurants better rated, but the family was hungry and we decided to try. Boy, what a mistake. The food was practically inedible, in fact, my wife and son did not eat but a couple of bites. Spaghetti Carbonara looked like it came out of a test kitchen for children...awful. OK so I just wanted to put that out there. Anywho, next we did a first course meal of lasagna , which wasn't great but wasn't bad. A little bland but it was filling. Next I had a fish dish that I didn't eat because I was full and it alone was 42 €. It wasn't bad but not good enough to be 42 € alone. That's a meal for 2 in the states including fish as 1 persons dinner choice, but we were in Italy so .... *shrugs*. My husband got lobster that was 96 € alone. However the lobster was damn good and I don't even like lobster. I just picked off his plate. It was definitely enough for 2 people. I guess 96 € is not to far of a stretch because I've seen a lobster plate in the states that was $75 alone so I will give them a pass on that and it was good. We also had wine that wasn't bad. .... Oh we also had some broccoli. It was seasoned well and cooked good. That's one thing I did notice about Italians they can cook broccoli (I know weird right, when they are known for pasta). I had the broccoli in some other cities besides Venice (we went to Rome, Florence, Milan, & Venice) and it was the bomb.com at every restaurant I tried it at. Sad the reviews are so low. The food here is phenomenal. Yes it's expensive. But it's Venice! A coffee is €9.00! Normally a coffee is €1.50 to €2.00. The food is so amazing. Fresh grated white truffles! Perfectly cooked pasta. Great flavor and the staff is knowledgeable and bilingual. Stay away from the Touristy crap and come support this business that's been here since 1784. It's authentic and worth your time. You're in Venice, live it up and enjoy it read more

Without a doubt, the worst food we've eaten while we've been in Italy- and we've been here for well over a month now. We were wandering around Venice, looking for a place to eat and unfortunately stumbled across this place. We were desperately hungry and this restaurant was not crowded, so we figured we could eat quickly. We should've realized that the lack of customers was a sign that we shouldn't eat here. They sat us down and I immediately noticed all of the waiters sitting down in the back, talking and laughing loudly. Service was slow to say the least. The spaghetti alla carbonara was the worst I've had. They let the eggs scramble which any one who's ever made carbonara should know that is a big no-no. Extremely overpriced at €25 for a dish of lower quality than any I've had. For my husband and I to each get an appetizer and a simple first course came to a total of €110. This is largely due to the hidden service charges you will receive for bread and for cutlery. We drank only water (€9 a liter) as the wine prices were ridiculous. We've averaged €50 for extremely nice dinners while in Italy (Bergamo, Monterosso, Milan), so we were shocked. Please do not make our mistake and please avoid the tourist traps like this!! read more

I've been to world class cities and paid exorbitant prices for incredible food in the past, and Al Colombo nails 2 out of 3 of those: a great city and outrageous prices. Unfortunately, the only incredible thing about the food was how mediocre it was. When we arrived after 2 weeks of amazing dining throughout Italy, we were surprised to see that the restaurant was empty, but we were early, so we assumed it would fill up later. It did. 5 minutes after we ordered, 3 large American tour groups marched in and theit guides began loudly competing with each other for attention. We had ordered risotto for two and when it came we each were each ladled out a meager portion that tasted like it had been flavored with Campbell's soup. For that we were charged 56 Euros. A bottle of still water was 6 Euros. A glass of house wine was 10 Euros, which wasn't bad except they only gave us each half of what a normal pour would have been. All told, we spent 106 Euros for the equivalent experience of what I imagine you could get with an Olive Garden appetizer in Dubuque. We couldn't wait to leave. On the plus side, they have some decent original art, (including a de Chirico painting) on the walls, and the bread was passable. read more
