As new Delray Beach residents, we decided to try out Akira Back in the Ray hotel for my wife's birthday. From service to the food, this place is more than worth the price tag that the menu commands. Initially our reservation was just for the two of us, but last minute, I decided to surprise my wife with an additional two guests. The staff at Akira Back bent over Akira Backward to accommodate our party indoors. We were extremely pleased that such a busy place took the time to make arrangements for us! Our server was knowledgeable and gave us a run down of the menu upon arrival. The shrimp appetizer and tuna pizza were total standouts when it comes to cold / hot appetizers. We loved the short rib fried rice (did not skimp on the mix-ins) and the sushi rolls we ordered were as creative as they were fresh and well made - one even had watermelon pop rocks in it. While we didn't opt to stay for dessert, they did bring one to the table (chocolate cigar, super creatively made an delicious) for our birthday celebration. Great touch. Service was not rushed but was attentive to our needs. The restaurant is artistically decorated and comfortable. I can't find any fault and management seems to go above and beyond in providing the finest experience which they can furnish. 5/5 we will be back! read more

I've been waiting to come for some time. It wasn't until i was in Vegas staying at the bellagio i realized the name of the restaurant is named after the chef. The quality of every single dish we had was incredible. The service was very good, Savannah did an incredible job going over some of her favorite dishes and personal recommendations. The Tuna Pizza and tuna tatami to start was exceptional. Even as an Uni and sweet shrimp and truffle lover, i think the truffle bomb could be so much better. Quality was fine of course, but i just don't think the dish meshed. On to the $50 per ounce, 4oz minimum A5 Wagyu....pretty damn amazing. Just like butter. All of the ala carte nigiri and sashimi + handrolls was phenomenal. Uni w quali egg, chu toro, tamago, unagi. It was all fantastic. I'm a nori lover. I always prefer a hand roll with nori 100/100 times, there's nothing fun for me about rice paper at such an extraordinary restaurant and experience. Maybe give an either or option? Idk. Just thinking out loud. Whatever the dessert was, was also really good. Maybe milk in a box or something catchy. I'll be back again. First meal for 2, didn't seem like anything over the top with exception of the $200 steak we ordered, dinner for 2 with 3 drinks each =$600 before tip 9/10 Well done to the staff and ownership read more

This place in phenomenal!!! Hands down one of my most favorite restaurants in Delray Beach. Have eaten here several times and both the food and service are excellent. The their sushi and steak both. Wonderful to take someone that also likes an extensive wine menu. The vibe is chill and dimly lit setting the tone for a romantic evening. read more

WORTH READING My husband and I had a highly disappointing experience at Akira Back tonight that it's worth mentioning. It was entirely due to the handling of the seating arrangements by the manager. My husband and I had a reservation, but due to the rain, the restaurant was clearly trying to cram as many guests as possible into the limited space at the bar. We were asked to move from a three-seat station to a four-seat station, which was squeezed uncomfortably against a cash register. To make matters worse, we were told to make space for a regular Guest who did not have a reservation, which the manager mentioned that the guest had a "physical liability." I'm all for making reasonable accommodations however not once did the manager ask if we had any physical issues with the new arrangement--something that felt incredibly inconsiderate and tone-deaf. For the record I do have a physical disability so I am taking this seriously and personally. Not all disabilities are visible. A proffered gratis drink was pathetic at best for the inconvenience. What was even more frustrating is that, despite being loyal regulars who dine here 2-3 times a week when we're in Florida, spending an average of $400-$500 per visit, the manager seemed to prioritize the needs of a guest who was "a regular"--while treating us with complete disregard. The staff kept hovering uncomfortably close to us while welcoming the guest and talking loudly, adding to the feeling of being crammed into a space that was clearly too small for us. The manager should never have added the fourth bar stool to make this accommodation. In the end, the manager made a poor decision that it completely overshadowed our meal. In summary the meal was one appetizer and two drinks - $125--clearly a value less than what we've paid in the past. Given how much we typically spend here, it's safe to say that Akira Back has lost our business. We won't be returning unless this manager is no longer present. read more

Akira Back, Delray Beach I am not into 'chi-chi' dining at all but I do enjoy good food at a reasonable value. Based on my research I new Akira Back was not going to be cheap but it was helmed by a Michelin Star Chef and it was a splurge night. Turned out Akira Back was not my cup of Saki. Let me count the ways: 1. ...Saturday night the decibel level was near ear shattering. So much so that even my hearing aids couldn't compensate for the din. Almost impossible to hear my companions. The weather was iffy, but the manager offered to set us up outside with a few other intrepid guests and luckily they had large patio umbrellas, because of course it started to rain. 2. Cocktails in a high-end restaurant should be a given especially at Akira, the Lychee Martini. We ordered 4. This (my girlie drink go to with Sushi, no offense ladies!) and one that should be floral and Sweet... to all of our palates this version was surprisingly not. In fact it was almost sour-ish. When brought to the attention of the waiter he was surprised but the drinks were immediately exchanged for different cocktails. Mine a Rasberry Mule, satisfactory. One good thing I could say was that as requested, we recieved 3 Lychees! 3. For the apps we ordered the touted Sushi Pizza ($29.), aka small thin sliced Tuna on a Cracker Crust with a few jalapeno slivers and no sauce accompaniment. 8 small slices, maybe 2 bites each. Dissapointing. 4. Next, the Seaweed Salad, Constructed ($16.) (beautiful presentation) and immediately deconstructed per our waiter's suggestion into a mish-mash on a plate. Tastey. Worth the price on any planet? Nope. 5. For the main we ordered the Perfect Storm Roll and the Hot Mess Roll (~$26. ea). Honestly, bland and nothing special. I've had better at many a lower end Sushi restaurant. 6. Black Cod with Saki Foam $46. for an estimated 5 oz (or 4 oz) piece of fish, Really? We thought it was interesting when ordering the waiter suggested we order sides with that main... Now we knew why. I'm not quite sure why many think this stuff is fabulous/great. What are their benchmarks? I searched through the postings and even posted my own query. Should have known from my post, and only a handful of respondents out of the 135,000 members of Let's Eat South Florida that the reception of Akira was luke warm. Overall, the four of us were Underwhelmed, We Over Paid and We're Still Hungry. On a bright note we were lucky to find street parking on a busy Saturday night in Delray. Hotel Ray valet parking was $25. read more

They canceled on my birthday due to the weather, while my original visit is 8:30pm anyway. I asked if there is anything available even later, being told no. Really sad that you cancelled me was ok, but if I cancelled you in 2 hours I would be charged $25 per person. If you are not confident with the weather, why do you even bother to open patio? Sometime say sorry isn't enough for a Saturday night at 6pm telling someone is getting ready for a birthday dinner that your dinner is being cancelled. Good job Akira back. read more

The food was absolutely delicious! The wagyu fried rice was tasty and not overdone with oil as many fried rices tend to be. We had several rolls, all delicious with very fresh fish. We started with the lobster tempura which was cooked to perfection and in a very light ponzu sauce. Amazing! I had been wanting to try this place for a while and I'm thankful the place lived up to my expectations. The service was great and our drinks arrived in very timely fashion despite the bar being crowded. The only reason I have it 4 instead of 5 star was due to noise. The acoustics in there don't lend for a quiet dinner to be able to chat with the folks at your table. I felt like I was yelling at my friends across me the whole time. However, I know someone people like a loud lively spot. I can't wait to go back! read more

This review is difficult for me to write because I love Akira Back. I hope this feedback is taken seriously so that these issues can be addressed. Recently, I've noticed a decline in quality, particularly with the AB TUNA PIZZA*, which used to be absolutely delicious. I've visited this location several times now, and my friends and I have all been left with disappointment. I sincerely hope they can restore the quality because Akira Back has been one of my favorite sushi places. It wasn't a problem in preparation; I think it was mostly the quality of the food and fish they are ordering. I have visited different Akira Back locations, and this is the one that has been declining in quality. read more

Akira Back is a fantastic sushi restaurant. The fish is extremely fresh and each dish is unique and flavorful. The food is definitely pricey, but worth it. Our server made great recommendations. I highly recommend the Toro Tartare, Grilled Octopus, Perfect Storm Roll, Baked Crab Hand Roll, and Japanese Mushrooms. The only dish I was not impressed with was the apple dessert. I will definitely be back to try other dishes. read more

Easily the best sushi experience in Palm Beach County. A mix between Nobu and Azabu in the best way. Both the sushi counter and kitchen are consistently excellent. We were here when they first opened, took a 1 year break due to having a baby, and retuned last night for the first time. They remembered us and treated us amazingly. We debated Joel Robuchon or Surf Club in Miami for date night and we're glad we picked Akira Back. Favorites include: Sushi Chef Matt special creations Truffle bomb Tuna/salmon tataki salad Tempura lobster Tuna nigiri Uni nigiri- last night pristine from Hokkaido. Robata scallops on the shell Miso cod Bacon/kimchi fried rice. Pro tip: sit at the counter, get to know Chef Matt. Get yummy off the menu creations. read more

recently dined at Akira Black, a sushi restaurant located in the new Ray Hotel in downtown Delray. As a sushi enthusiast, I was excited to try out their offerings and was particularly curious about their sushi and sushi-related appetizers. Firstly, I have to say that the presentation of the sushi was impeccable. Each dish was arranged in an artful and aesthetically pleasing manner, making it clear that a lot of care went into the preparation. Moreover, the freshness of the ingredients was evident in each bite. The quality of the fish was outstanding, and the sushi rice had the perfect texture. And the service was outstanding, our waitress Carrisa (I think that was her name)was amazing. However, while the sushi looked great and was fresh, I found that the flavor was somewhat lacking. I was expecting the sushi to have more depth and complexity, but it was somewhat one-dimensional. I would have preferred it to have more of a flavor punch, but unfortunately, it fell a bit short in this regard. We ordered the Nazo 9 which was presented beautifully in the box and smoking from the dry ice under the box which was a stunning presentation. I wish the food in the box was as good as the presentation. The best thing in the box was the uni which was amazing. The toro was good also but needed something like some caviar or a brush of toro sauce. In terms of appetizers, I ordered the AB Tuna pizza, and the Salmon carpaccio both which were a major disappointment. The pizza lacked any discernible flavor other than a mild taste of white truffle and didn't have enough of the promised tuna to make it worth ordering. Considering the hype surrounding this item I was hoping for something unique and delicious, but unfortunately, these dishes did not deliver. Overall, if you're looking for beautifully presented and fresh sushi, and excessive prices, then Akira Black is worth considering. However, if you're looking for sushi with complex and bold flavors or unique and flavorful appetizers, you may want to look elsewhere. Try sushi Simon, bang bang sushi or sunset sushi all are amazing. read more

Super over priced faux-fusion sushi sponsored by a big corporate hotel chain catering to delusional middle class consumers more interested in the ambience than the food. Tuna on a round cracker is called a sushi pizza. Really? It was lame. Wagyu 5 on a veggie sushi role was uninspired. The portions were super small,, of course served on a giant plate so the presentation was nice but the service was super slow and it was $800 for two people with one glass of champagne. Granted it was new years, but it wasn't worth it at all. There were a couple things that were ok but nothing that was that great that could come close to justifying the outrageous price. read more

I was in town for a business trip and Akita Back was right there at the hotel. I've had Japanese food before but not like this. The meal I had was by far and away the best meal I have ever had. Our party ordered probably 15 different things and they were all exceptional. Everything was cooked perfectly and it was hot when served. We ate outside which was nice. Being in South Florida anything outside is going to be hot but we had our 1 year old with us and being outside was nice for us and others. The setting was great and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant( both inside and out) was very comfortable and inviting. Our server (Karissa??) was phenomenal. She explained the menu because honestly, we really didn't know what we were looking at. The recommendations she made were spot on and both she and the manager that iight visited us often to ensure our glasses were full, the fresh meals were brought out and the empty plates taken away. Living in Maine, I only wish there was a restaurant that was this good up here. Sadly no, but I know where I'll be if I ever get back to Delray Beach. read more

Suuuuper cute ambiance, great service, good food. Our server was amazing, she was able to answer Al of our questions in detail and was knowledgeable on the menu, other staff members also came by to assist when needed or give their suggestions as well. The octopus was yummy, the sauces complimented it very well. The sushi roll was great, I usually order a side of eel sauce and spicy Mayo but the roll really didn't need it. The short rib fried rice was made perfectly, tons of flavor and a pretty good portion. One person can eat it but it's definitely shareable. The halibut was a good choice but I think I'll try another item the next time I go. For the price, it could have had more flavor in my opinion. read more

Excellent. That's really all that needs to be said. Special night out type place. Pricey but worth it.

Dined here for the third time since my initial review this past Saturday. If I could give them 6 stars this time around, I would. It was my husband & my 15th anniversary, and we were staying at The Ray Hotel. Knowing that we already enjoyed this restaurant in the past, we decided to make an early dinner reservation here again for this occasion. We ordered the usual things we always order with a few exceptions we've never had before. Everything was of course delicious. The food & service here has always been great but this particular time, the service was just really exceptional. We truly enjoyed and appreciated our server. I believe his name was "Lang?" He was so attentive & friendly. His attitude really elevated the dining experience. Every time we've eaten here, it has been for a special occasion, but this was the first time that we were gifted a dessert by our server. We most certainly did not expect that and my husband and I just thought that was so very thoughtful and kind of him to do. I hope he gets to serve for us again in the future. read more

Overall great. Overpriced but it is yummy and vibes are great. Service is really good too

This is our second time back to Akira Back and this visit left us very disappointed. I suppose the first time I was impressed by the decor and didn't focus enough on the food. We tried different items from the last visit and everything was below average. The restaurant's signature dish, the Pop Rockin' sushi roll is based on the chef's mother putting pop rocks on food to get him to eat. Ha... ha.... ha.... ha. Cutesy story aside, the roll was sickeningly sweet and I doubt many people over ten years old would like it and it's the type of cloying dish best left to family folklore. Another roll we had was okay but at $29 I expected something better. A waiter recommended fish dish was dry, tasteless and clearly not fresh and this makes me wonder about the quality control of the kitchen. Dessert also was a disappointment and I'm not sure what the restaurant's investment group and chef's were thinking. Dessert was just a small scoop of ice cream surrounded by tiny whipped cream like garnishes and this was truly lackluster. It's a shame because I really wanted to like Akira Back. read more

Great place for dinner with friends! Another Yelper recommended this place and I'm glad they did!

Service was excellent! Zach was our server and we tried everything he recommended. Started with the Truffle bomb, Tuna Tataki and Filet Tobanyaki. 4 perfect bite size truffles. Amazing flavor. (As Zach said, don't use the soy sauce given on the side. On anything) The picked wasabi was a great kick on the tataki. And the filet melted in your mouth. Next course was Hot Mess and Cow Wow rolls. Both delicious and complete opposites. So much flavor! Would have loved to try the Miso Cod next but we were too full. But not before trying a dessert. The Apple Harumachi (I think ). Hot apples with vanilla gelato and cinnamon cream cheese. Perfect finish to an snacking meal. Will be back to try many more items on the menu. read more

Four stars because it is extremely loud and the drinks are lackluster. The interior must have been designed without acoustics in mind because it is extremely hard to hear the person across from you. As for the drinks, a restaurant that has a lineage to Michelin Starred locations should have more imaginative cocktails, these were something I'd expect to find in an airport, and not in an Amex Lounge, but just some random spot with seats and booze. The food however was 5stars all the way. Everything we had was executed perfectly, zero complaints there. My wife had what she said was the best Sushi roll she's even had, including Chef Morimoto's place in NYC. I had the short rib and the poached quail egg was done perfectly, it was still in the perfect shape of an egg, very neat. I would 100% recommend coming here and maybe even driving a bit out of the way to do so. read more

Finally a more fun upscale restaurant in Delray! The place is absolutely stunning, it's really loud inside, so if you're an outside diner I recommend it. The food was a hit or miss especially when talking about the high price points. The Torro Tartar is $50 for the smallest amount. It's beautifully served but not worth the price! The tuna pizza**fried rice**Brussels sprouts**and chocolate cup** was my favorite. The rolls are decent. I went with friends that keep kosher and they were able to remove shellfish from most sushi rolls and remove shellfish from fried rice. Honestly I'd come back to try the hot plates. Out of all Delray restaurants it's definitely the best spot there! read more

I don't think there is a better place in Boca or Delray that I know of. I went with my wife for a special meal and it was really special. We shared the tuna/salmon tataki, which was very fresh and had a wonderful sauce on it. We also shared a shrimp, tempura and salmon roll that was a home run. I wanted to try the short ribs, which may be the best tasting short ribs I've ever had. My wife had the lamb chops which were also perfect. We shared the grilled avocado, a tasty dish that we've not seen anywhere else. We finished with the chocolate cup that was also perfect. The restaurant is very attractive and comfortable. The service was also flawless. We will go back soon. read more
