Tried this sushi restaurant for the first time and overall had a good experience. We did the luxury omakase, and the staff throughout the night were incredibly attentive, friendly, and made sure everything moved smoothly. One thing that stood out was how quickly the courses came out -- almost too quickly at times. It felt a little rushed and didn't really give enough time to fully enjoy or appreciate each piece before the next one arrived. At one point, we had 4-5 different things in front of us to eat. As for the sushi itself, some pieces were solid while others felt a bit average and not especially memorable. That said, for around a $100 omakase, I think the experience and quality were fair for the price point. You probably shouldn't expect ultra high-end, top-tier omakase quality at that range, but overall it was still enjoyable and worth trying at least once. read more

Came here for dinner because I wanted to try the treasure box! The restaurant is very nicely decorated, and the main seating area is around the sushi bar. The treasure box is similar to a chirashi bowl, but with all of the ingredients cut into cubes. Overall, I enjoyed the dish, but I have to say that a lot of the cubed pieces were avocado. The uni shooters we ordered were also pretty good. It is not the best uni, but you get what you pay for with 2 shooters for just $18. Came here for the $105 luxury omakase and honestly, it's worth considering for the amount of food you get. We had 21 courses, which was a lot. I was completely stuffed by the end. The progression had a nice mix of appetizers, hot dishes, and nigiri, and the overall fish quality was solid. Everything tasted fresh for the most part, though the uni leaned a bit bitter compared to the rest. I was especially excited about the chawanmushi (one of my favorites), and while it was included, the portion felt a little small. I definitely would've loved more of that. One feature I really enjoyed was the encore round at the end, where you can order an extra piece of your favorite. Some selections have a small $5 upcharge. Such a fun touch. My friend and I frequent Akafuji for their omakase, and their quality remains unmatched. Reservations for dining at their sushi bar are a must! You can probably grab them the same day if you have just a party of two, but will obviously want to call ahead if you're coming with a big group. We usually order their starting tier for omakase and it's just the right amount of food. My favorites in the past have been their ootoro nigiri, blackened miso cod nigiri, A5 wagyu nigiri, and ootoro rice bowl. In the past, I've ordered their soft shell crab appetizer, but found it on the oilier side, and thus didn't enjoy it as much. At the end of the omakase, they also offer an "encore" where you get to choose the course you liked the most and receive it free of charge. This is the only restaurant I've ever seen that does something so generous, so big ups to them on their hospitality! The staff are very friendly and parking is generally available right in front of the restaurant, despite the lot being shared with multiple other restaurants. It's a quiet and quaint spot, which is an introvert's dream. I will say that the sushi chefs don't interact with you much compared to other omakase experiences I've had, so that's something to keep in mind if you're looking for that kind of meal. WOW what an amazing omakase experience. The outside of the restaurant looks unassuming and the plaza it is located in is a little eerie especially late at night but don't let that fool you. We opted for the omakase luxury menu- the quality of fish you get for the price is a steal! Each piece is thoughtfully prepared, seasoned perfectly and the chef goes at your pace (I'm a really slow eater compared to my partner and the rate at which my courses came out was adjusted accordingly). The restaurant is really well lit & has a nice ambiance. There wasn't many people on a Monday. While the server did forget a couple items we ordered (repeated twice but he's brand new so it's ok), the dishes we got were pretty tasty. Everything was very fresh and good, but we'd both say all the dishes lack something to make it truly special/hit the spot. They don't have too many tables so we sat at the sushi bar but that set up is not conducive to conversations for three people. They had tables outside but too many flies around & it was still a bit hot. One person in our party got the Omakase and said it was decent. I got rolls, damago by itself & chawan sushi. They gave me damage hand roll (so got the order wrong but didn't offer to take it back immediately so I just ate it as I didn't want to bother. Chawan mushi was just OK but wouldn't order it again here as I've had better. My husband had the "treasure box" & said it was pretty good. Truly so sad to be updating my review because akafuji used to be one of my favorite sushi spots with high quality fish and great service. When I visited for the first time in a few months tonight, I had such a bad experience that I was shocked. Firstly, they forgot 2 of the items I ordered and I sat there waiting for quite awhile. I let my server know I was still waiting on a few items and still nothing happened. Eventually I had to flag down another server and confirm that the orders actually went in. When I eventually got the 2 items I ordered one of them was a complete mess. It was a roll that I had ordered multiple times before here but it came out looking so awful and quite literally falling apart on the plate. I couldn't even pick up a piece of the roll with my chopsticks because it was splitting apart. I was shocked because I've never experienced that here and I had to ask the server to take a look at the state of the roll. They did take it back to the kitchen and have it remade but even the second time wasn't nearly as good as the quality I've experienced in previous visits. All that to say- I was very disappointed by the quality and service and am wondering if they've had an ownership change in recent months. I had expected more innovation and thought in the menu for such a highly-priced course. The highlight of the course was actually the lychee ice cream we were given for dessert. I wish there were more dishes that stuck with me, but unfortunately this course was overall forgetful and not worth the price. I will say that I was quite full after the meal. The service was also subpar. It seems like the restaurant forced two seats at the end of the bar. The couple sitting next to me got the slowest service and very limited view of the counter. I ordered the deluxe omakase and was very disappointed with the experience. The meal has a live oyster that had a broken shell, which was off-putting. The amaebi was served without the head, and I was told it was sold out--which i never had this experience from any japanese restruant. One of the dishes was a half-steamed, half-fried squid, which felt odd and poorly executed. The steamed egg (chawanmushi) was served in a large cup but was only about 20% filled, which felt misleading and careless. Unfortunately, the issues continued throughout the meal. Overall, I would honestly rather get sushi from Mitsuwa than return here. The quality of the fish was great, but what really impressed me was the portion. At most places I only got 9-10 pieces of sushi and related items, but this place gives you 16 pieces, plus miso soup, salad, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), warm soba noodles, and a dessert. My wife and I felt somewhat full just half way through our course. Just when we thought we were done, more stuff started coming out. Just before our dessert, they offered us another sushi of our choice from its premium omakase list (items in white had no additional cost; green ones were $5 extra). So it actually ended up being 17 pieces plus all those other items mentioned above. Service was prompt and omakase items came out at a good pace. The otoro was divine--it melted in my mouth, leaving a rich, luscious, and oily texture from the fat. Absolutely sensational! They also had truffle ponzu soy sauce that you could drizzle on top, it's really good! A few things could have made the experience even better. At times, it was hard to hear the chef announce the name of the fish, so a printed list of the courses in order would have been helpful. There were a few fish I wished I knew more about. Also, some bites had a bit too much wasabi for my taste, causing that strong burning sensation through my nose. If you prefer less wasabi, it might be worth mentioning to the chef in advance. I really liked how the last piece of sushi they let you decide what you want. There were serval fish that had $5-$8 up charge due to its luxury. Celebrated our yearly early Christmas dinner ritual. Bff and I visited a familiar sushi spot and splurged in some delectable dining experience. A hidden gem in La Habra, Akafuji is a medium, trendy, bar-style sushi spot, with a classy/casual ambiance. Missing in the picture is the blue crab handroll and 1 nigiri... went straight to my mouth :) We got the omakase special- 8 pieces of chef's choice nigiris. I got an extra octopus nigiri and black cod (TY!). No fishy taste, melts in your mouth, and rice was perfect. It comes with a salad, dessert, & miso soup so we just ordered an extra miso. We also got scallops and some sashimi, shishito peppers, Chilean seabass, & a large sake. My favorites are otoro, black cod, seabass, and the sponge cake dessert! No wait time, seated at the bar, multiple chefs are working happily, friendly staff, clean, reasonable amount of wait for food. Omakase can take a little more time but we splurged on other items as we waited. Akafuji has been generous to us last night giving us "on the house" extra 2 nigiris, another plate of their sponge cake dessert (fkn delicious!), and a 15% off Manager's special! Saw this place on Instagram so I had to try it out. And we were blown away. Surprised I had not heard of it before since it's been around for 6 years. Prob one of the best omakase I've had. First off, the service was superb! Our waiter noticed that my husband was eating the cucumber salad and he continued to bring more cucumber salad several times even when we didn't ask. It was great! Last weekend, my friend and I got to visit Akafuji to try out their Omakase menu for the first time ever and both of us left pretty satisfied with our experience! Food: 5/5 + Omakase Sashimi Special $80 The Omakase Sashimi special is an assorted selection of 15 sashimi pieces that the sushi chefs curate for diners to try. It also comes with appetizers such as miso soup, Chawanmushi (Japanese steam egg custard), salad, fried Amadai, and yuzu ice cream dessert. In all, this was an absolute steal for its menu price point. For our sashimi, all the pieces we were given were so fresh and delicious. However, my personal favorites were the seared scallop, the blue fin toro, and uni, all of which were creamy and absolutely melted in my mouth. To be honest, since I have been to Japan twice now and had the opportunity to try omakase there, I haven't been impressed by sushi I have had back in the States. (Usually, it's either the quality of fish or the extreme price points that I get disappointed by.) However, due to the quality, quantity, and price point of the meal provided at Akafuji, I felt brought back to the countertops of Tokyo again. Service: 5/5 Service here was impeccable. You could tell from the staff to the sushi chefs that everyone loved and put so much care to their job. We went right at opening and were able to snag seats at the bar where we could see the sushi chefs make all their tasty creations for us to consume later. Furthermore, the ambience is elevated, with modern sleek white decor. There is high top seating around the sushi bar as well as individual tables that larger parties can sit at. There is also seating located outside as well. This spot is perfect for intimate get togethers or celebrating a special occasion with your loved ones. One thing of note the restaurant is located in a cramped parking lot so I would keep that in mind if you are coming with a larger party to potentially carpool. Great food, great quality, and a spot I keep coming back to! The tuna nigiri, salmon, and yellowtail are absolutely amazing. Akafuji is definitely one of my favorite sushi spots. Really great quality sushi & rice dishes! We got the chicken katsu plate, seared black cod nigiri (seasonal), salmon nigiri, tamago, soft shell crab roll and chawamushi! Our favorite was the seared black cod -- it was the perfect amount of salty and fatty! Their katsu was perfectly marinated and had a nice sauce on the side. We booked a 7pm reservation on Friday night -- came 30 mins early and was seated immediately. read more

Akafuji in la habra serves premium & fresh omakase.They start you off with the house salad, miso soup, & chawanmushi. Then onto the 16 piece premium sushi. I appreciated that every piece was handmade carefully by the chefs. My favorite was the black cod and I love that they have a dropper for truffle ponzu. It really elevates the taste of the sushi and adds a little unique touch to it. And the a5 wagyu beef was heavenly. It was soo tender and just melts onto your tongue. Towards the end, they brought out a tempura set which was such a warm & savory palette cleanser after the sushi. And of course we always need a sweet treat after a good meal! (Yuzu Ice cream + egg bread) service Everyone here is so respectful and kind! They're always checking up on you and making sure the finished plates are cleared after each round. The chefs put a lot of care and effort into making each sushi a delicious experience. ambiance Came as soon as they opened on Friday at 11:30am. The seating is mainly bars because it's an omakase house. Interior was very clean and modern, however I do wish the music they played was a little more relaxed.
