We recently tried Chubby Sushi & Ramen, and our experience was a bit mixed. The Hokkaido Roll was definitely the standout--it was fresh, flavorful, and easily our favorite. The nigiri was also very good and probably the highlight of the meal overall. My son ordered the ramen and really enjoyed it. That said, the rest of the sushi rolls were just okay and didn't really stand out. They weren't bad, but nothing that would make us go out of our way to order them again. Unfortunately, the service was disappointing. When we were first seated, my husband asked if we could switch to another available table. It was a simple request, but the server seemed visibly unhappy about it. From that point on, we felt like we received a noticeably colder attitude for the rest of the meal, which took away from the overall experience. Long time diner, first time reviewer. Their sushi is generally good, although a bit on the pricey side. I did not like their Agedashi Dōfu because they make it different from most places where I've had it. The tofu is supposed to be served in sauce or broth. But theirs is all dry and did not come with enough sauce or broth to dip into, so the flavor was a little off for me. The rolls are decent. Personally I think they're packed with too much rice. The Poke Salad did not have a very generous amount of sashimi compared to other sushi restaurants. Chubby Sushi & Ramen is a great place to stop in for casual dining. This place is fully decorated with a whole bunch of stuff, it was a bit anxiety-provoking. We ordered the Chubby Sashimi ($65) to share between two people. The sashimi tasted fresh, but the sweet shrimp head was not deep fried enough so parts of the shell was not edible. I didn't like that it didn't come with rice. Service was just okay. They never once refilled our waters and both of our glasses were empty before we even finished our meal. Quite possibly the best lunch deal out there! For about $17-22, you can get a three course lunch. For people like me who can't decide, this is amazing. I went with the tonkatsu ramen, nigiri sushi and tempura for about $22. My buddy ordered very similarly and we split the seared bluefin tuna with asparagus appetizer. Everything was pretty good, but have had better across the board. If it were for lunch combo, I would have given 5 stars because it's rare to get these types of options with this level of quality. I do wonder if the nigiri or other items would be better if not part of the lunch special. Checked out Chubby Sushi & Ramen in Downtown Brea recently and really enjoyed it. The location is great if you're already walking around the area, and the food definitely exceeded my expectations. The Chubby Sashimi Platter was the highlight for me. Everything tasted fresh and the presentation looked just as good as it tasted. I also really liked the Chubby Roll, which ended up being one of my favorite bites of the meal. We also had the salmon with blue crab, fresh oysters, and spicy miso ramen. We also ordered 3 more rolls as a main course including Chubby high protein, Chubby Angel, and Brea rolls. Our main Sushi course was the Chubby Bowl. We also added Crab and Baked Scallop rolls! I had food delivered, just wanted to relax at home and still have one of my favorites..sushi. The delivery app did not have the restaurant I like, so Chubby Sushi was a close by choice. I love yellowtail. I ordered the sashimi. 5 pieces for $24...wow prices have gone up. I knew that would not be able to fill me up, so I ordered the Poke. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement..the pieces of sashimi were about 1/2 the size of what I was used to at other places for more money..the flavor and freshness was not bad, but not amazing. If you're in Orange County, specifically downtown Brea and you haven't tried this spot, you're definitely missing out. Once I tried their sushi for the first time, they quickly became one of my favorites in OC. They fly their fish in every Friday and you can literally taste the freshness. Over the times I've visited, I've tried basically the whole menu but a couple in particular are my favorites. I always start off with the Blue crab appetizer that's wrapped with salmon on the outside and asparagus. Their sushi rolls are all solid here--I can't recommend the signature Chubby roll enough. And if you're feeling adventurous, they even have Tuna bone marrow shots which are actually such a nice palate cleanser! And, of course, the star of the show is the Chubby sashimi platter. Each piece is thiccc and melts in your mouth and even comes with sweet shrimp and uni. This spot is genuinely a 10/10, so if you haven't tried it, like I said, you're definitely missing out! This was my husband and I's first time trying the Chubby Sushi! We came at a perfect time for dinner because it wasn't too busy yet. We sat at the sushi bar which was fine as we got to see behind the scenes of sushi making. We got the Brea roll, the 20 piece sushi and a bottle of sake. The fish was nice and fresh. Came here recently and it ended up being one of the better sushi meals I've had in a while. The fish tasted incredibly fresh and you can tell they care about quality. Last Wednesday night... I decided to hit up another sushi place called Chubby Sushi & Ramen. Located in Downtown Brea. It's known for their sushi and ramen. I came here and it wasn't that busy. Seated right away!!! I've ordered some delicious sushi and some rolls. First off is the app... salmon with blue crab (4pc) Next up is some tasty sushi.... bluefin tuna (2 pc) and A5 japanese wagyu (2 pc). Then it's chubby ninja roll, and a roll that's named after this town called Brea roll. Sounds fun, right??? Oh, a Alaskan roll. For all those goodies, Presentation is quite nice. Looks fresh. I think the best item I've tried here is their wagyu sushi. Tastes heavenly good. It's $24.99 for that though. Crazy expensive, but who doesn't love A5 wagyu meat??! Fish/sashimi was good if you want a quick sit down Japanese bento style. Their unagi was better than standard pre made eels sold at local asian supermarket. One star deducted from tonkatsu ramen. We decided to eat at nearby restaurant after having a good day of pickleball at Tuffree Hill Park of Placentia, CA. The Chubby Sushi & Ramen restaurant is right next to downtown Brea. The restaurant is modern, more upscaled than traditional Japanese sushi and ramen. Service is above average. My friend likes their sushi and sashimi, so I ordered mixed poke bowl, tonkatsu, and with house salad. Plating is nice. This place is very popular. I initially came here few months back but couldn't find any parking nearby, so I left. When I came back to try recently, I just parked across the street at one of the parking structures. This is definitely more of a sushi place than ramen. There are only three types of ramen (tonkotsu, shoyu and miso). I haven't tried any of its ramen, but the sushi was quite good. Everything was very fresh and tasty with just the right amount of portion. The signature Chubby Roll was very refreshing. It has salmon, bluefin tuna, yellowtail, green onion, soy paper, avocado, masago, and topped off with some sweet soy mustard sauce. My wife's Mix Poke Bowl was good too. Quality of fish was on point and the ratio of fish to rice was just right. Most places just overload with rice. I have been dying to try this place and finally had the chance to. What I found really unique about the place is the ascetics of the presentation of the food and the unique dishes. Came on a Saturday at opening without a reservation and barely got a spot. Tuna Bone Marrow (3/5): Even though this is mostly serve on Fridays, we were able to snag 2. The marrow just tasted like jello, nothing spectacular. However I do enjoy the scrapes of tuna on the side. I like to think of it as extra pieces of tuna. Chubby Sashimi Deluxe (5/5): The presentation for this was amazing as there was smoke coming out of our sashimi. It comes with 20 pieces of seasonal fish, but it felt endless. There was toro, salmon, kimmedai, and plenty of Ini. The fish was fresh and this definitely worth the try. Seared Bluefin Tuna w/asparagus (5/5): The asparagus is wrapped with seared tuna. I really liked the smokiness of the tuna as it gives a great balance between soft and crunchy. Fried Oyster (5/5): The oyster was very plump and fried to perfection. Not quite the proper experience. Seated at the sushi bar. The bar is 4 seats in total. We occupied 2 seats while the other 2 remained unoccupied. Ordered 3 appetizers and each of us also ordered the 10 piece "omakase". Wasn't too busy and clearly we are within the line of sight of the chef(s) yet they paced the meal as if they were trying to turn our seats around. All three appetizers came out within the span of a few minutes and before they were consumed, the two 10 piece omakase was out on the small strip of sushi counter. Omakase is a misnomer here. It's a 10 piece nigiri plate whereas an omakase is an experience where the chef would describe the nigiri as it's presented one by one at an unrushed pace. Food was ok and I can overlook the misnomer. But yo, the restaurant wasn't busy and clearly the chefs can do a better job with the pace. If I wanted to shovel sushi into my pie hole, there's X-Fish a couple blocks away and it would've been more affordable. read more

I was staying in downtown LA but decided to make the drive out to Brea to give this place a try since they serve blue fin tuna shipped in weekly, which I think is awesome. It was a good drive out but worth it overall. We decided to try some spicy tuna handrolls, tuna sashimi, wagyu nigiri with uni and caviar, ramen, and tuna marrow. I was very excited about the tuna marrow. I rarely see or hear of any places serving this so I was looking forward to it. It was very good and fresh with a gelatin taste. Nothing much to it but it was something different and unique. With a little wasabi and soy sauce, it was pretty good. The wagyu nigiri was soft and tender along with the uni and caviar. The tuna sashimi was really good and got to try 3 types of tuna sashimi. The otoro was definitely the best with the gold flakes and caviar. The ramen was also very good and the broth was flavorful. I was also excited to see that they had fresh grated wasabi as well and it was really good with all the sushi we had. Overall, I think this place was worth the drive to check out. For a place that serves blue fin tuna flown in weekly, it was a pretty laid back atmosphere and very causal. We also got our food pretty quickly which we were surprised by as well.
