What an incredible dinner at AJ Spurs! We sat in the bar area, and our server made the whole experience even better. He was personable, super witty, and had us laughing throughout the meal. The food was outstanding. We ordered three top sirloin steaks and a rack of ribs, and everything was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. The complimentary beef stew before the meal was amazing and a great way to start dinner. Our kids completely wiped out the crackers, which our server got a good laugh out of. We also appreciated the to-go sodas, and the sundaes and root beer floats that come with the meal were the perfect ending. I came for the food (that's what my $100 is paying for, right?). My medium-well steak was so dry. I asked for A1 Sauce to try to help it. Didn't work. I added salsa. Didn't work. It seemed there was no fixing it short of sending it back and asking for a new steak (which I didn't do, probably should have, though). I left disappointed. I normally do not leave Yelp reviews, but I thought it was important this time to leave one because of how bad the food was. My husband and I have gone to several different AJ Spurs several different locations and I've only had the amazing food. However, this time the food was subpar. I ordered a 6 ounce fillet. The first fillet that came out was not cooked properly so I returned it- I never return food. The second one that came out was cooked correctly, but it was over seasoned on the plate. The rice was bland, the AJ potatoes were like potato chips. The salad was bland and the soup came out cold. My husband had the liver dish which he has had in the past at other AJ Spurs and was looking forward to having it again because the last time he had it, it the was better than the fillet. This time he didn't even eat the meal because it tasted as if it was old and now he hopes he's not in the bathroom the rest of the night. The only thing that tasted good was the two Coors lights served in a bottle. At this point I do not think we will be going back at an AJ Spurs due to how poor the food was this time. read more

The server said she would take the charge off. The server took the charge off of somebody else's meal; so my daughter took the charge off of the tip she left. I got ice water when I was seated because I asked for it. Nobody else got any unless they spoke up. It tasted like tap water. Apparently people who asked for the included after-dinner liqueur had three choices, but all three were mixed in one little glass. Ugh. I chose the included root beer float for dessert. I love those. It was good but there was that tap water taste again. Was it made from a tap on the wall, like at Costco's food court? I think we came on an off night (July 4). They were slammed, but half the restaurant was closed off. I want to say there was maybe 3 waiters working that night. We got sat in the "bar" area. It was fine, that's where the sole waitress was. She was fine but after she took our order and realized we were sharing a full rack of ribs (family of 4, 2 small kids) she checked out after that. I guess at this point in her career as a server she can't read social cues (napkins on plate, antsy kids, no one eating anything) because we had to ask for our check and then 30 minutes later we were finally able to flag her down. Yes it was a holiday and I found out from the hostess that a few people did call off so I'll cut her some slack. She needed help big time and there was no management to be found. Wont be back but it was fun for the kids I'll say! FOOD: ribs were decent , they did "fall off" the bone but all the sides left something to be desired. We ate at AJ's Spurs and were definitely impressed by the portion sizes--huge! It really makes the price worth it. With any meal, you get a full spread: Vaquero soup (served with salsa and chili beans on the side), salad, A.J. spuds (potatoes) for the table, and dessert--your choice of a root beer float or a vanilla sundae with chocolate syrup. I ordered the Cajun Chicken Tortellini (blackened chicken over cheese-stuffed tortellini with herb butter). The tortellini was a little lackluster and didn't have much flavor, but adding pepper helped. The chicken was definitely blackened and had that nice charred flavor. The soup was tasty--especially the vegetables. For salad, you can choose your dressing; I went with ranch, which was good and came with some beets. The sundae was simple but satisfying. My husband got the Chuckwagon (6 oz. top sirloin, 4 St. Louis pork ribs, and 4 shrimp scampi). The ribs were tender and full of flavor, the steak was cooked perfectly medium, and the shrimp was well-seasoned and delicious. The rice on the side was just okay--nothing memorable. Our biggest disappointment was that some of the food was lukewarm. The soup cooled off quickly, and both the potatoes and rice weren't served hot. Service was great, though--staff were very attentive, constantly checking in, refilling drinks, and clearing plates. All meals also come with a piece of Texas toast. The decor is very themed--think hunting lodge with fur skins and taxidermy everywhere. We were seated right away on a Saturday, which was nice. Overall, it was an okay experience. They have a great western atmosphere and really fun ambiance. Kids and adults alike enjoy this restaurant. You can get delicious steak, or salmon, or a plethora of other options. Their onion rings might be some of the best onion rings I've ever had. Servers there have always been really kind and helpful. Our first time eating at A.J. Spurs after eyeing it for years every time we drive through Buellton. It was great! The old western decor is fun and adds to the experience. We had the pork and beef ribs, steak bits, and chicken wings. All meats are nice and tender! They really understand what good bbq should taste like here. The smoke flavor and seasonings left our taste buds wanting more! There's so much food for the price. Our waitress, Kimberly, was fantastic. She was very attentive to our needs and wants. Have been here a few times over the past years and have always wanted to try their beef and pork ribs. Did so this time, and was not impressed. The ribs were way overcooked and extremely chewy - not what I'm looking for in a rib. They were slathered in a house made BBQ sauce that was quite frankly not as good as something I could have purchased at the store. My wife had the sirloin steak and said that it was quite tasty but a little undercooked. The best part of the meal, now, remember this is a fairly pricey BBQ/steak restaurant, was the soup and salad.
