    Seats 18 people so intimate is the word, but hot damn the dumplings are good. I always prefer steamed dumplings, but there's an option to have fried instead, and to mix and match a platter between the different fillings, and across the 5 types we tried there wasn't a single one that wasn't great. Could do with a title more choice for those of us that abstain from some or all animal products, hence not getting five stars, although that was a tough decision as the food was great.

    So happy to welcome this place to the neighbourhood! 21 types of dumplings freshly made to order, lovely little salads, even homemade soya milk if that's what you like. Dumplings are served with soy sauce and a spicy pepper oil and are absolutely DELICIOUS! You can have them steamed, boiled or fried.....you even get them to go :-) We got 4 different kinds to go - #7 (chicken and mushroom, $10.99), #8 (lamb and coriander, $12.99), #17 (pork, chive and shrimp, $11.99) and #20 (cabbage and mushroom, $9.99). All fabulous, can't wait to go back!

    Ai Dumpling in NDG is a small, underrated family-run restaurant well-worth the trip from anywhere in the Montréal area. They make everything fresh to order, and offer vegetarian and vegan options. Three dishes are pictured here: the humble cucumber is elevated to a sublime status with some chili, vinegar, sesame seeds, and sesame oil. Refreshing and delicious, and one of several starters and salads. Their wontons are made to order as are their dumplings. Dumplings are served 15 to an order, but diners can combine flavors or have half-portions, and always have the option for boiled or fried! Pictured here are crispy fried shrimp dumplings.

    This place is around the corner from where I live. I usually make my own. I went for lunch alone. Holy moly I can't believe I ate 15 dumplings to myself. Next time I'm bringing a friend to help. I couldn't let all of them go to waste.

    I know my pic looks weird but they flip the fried dumplings so the fried side is up. Aside from that OMG AMAZING! Going back for dinner!

    These are simply the best Chinese style dumplings I've had outside of Beijing. Easily the best I've had in Montreal.

The Long Version: I love hand pulled noodles, so my husband and I had lunch here. He's not a fan of noodle soups but agreed to come and just have appetizers, lol. I got the small-sized Spicy Mushrooms and Chicken Noodle Soup ($13.99). I chose the #6 size noodles which is the thickest noodles they offer. My husband got the imperial rolls ($4.50 for 3) and the fried shrimp wontons ($11.99 for 10). I really enjoyed my soup, especially the thick noodles. They were chewy and the right amount of softness. There were chicken pieces in it, mushrooms and a delicious "tofu sausage." It also had 2 pieces of baby Bok Choy and some pieces of kelp. I wished there was more vegetables. The soup also had green onions and cilantro. The broth was a tiny bit spicy from the chili oil. I am happy that this soup does not have sesame seeds in it, so I didn't have to ask them to hold the sesame seeds. Lol. My only complaint would be that the broth was a bit too salty and too oily for my tastes. I still thought it was good though. My husband enjoyed his appetizers. The imperial rolls were vegetarian. I didn't have any, but they looked like nothing special to me, haha. However, the hubby liked them which is what matters. The fried shrimp wontons looked good and he liked those too. Service was pleasant and efficient. The decor is casual with some fun touches. I liked the rotating lanterns with lights on the ceiling and the drawings of a big squid and clams on the walls. I just wasn't too sure about the noodles. We did see some plates come out and the noodles looked good, but they didn't look fantastic so I definitely wanna go back and actually just tried the noodles, but I always get tempted with the dumplings LMFAO

I initially was going to get their soup dumplings (their specialty), but when I looked at the menu, I saw that they had Laksa ($18.99), so I couldn't resist ordering that instead. My husband prefers pan-fried dumplings over soup dumplings, so he got the pork and mushroom dumplings ($14.50) and there was a $1.99 surcharge for pan-frying (the base price is for steamed). My Laksa was huge and delicious. The broth was so rich with coconut milk and a bit spicy. It was really flavourful. The noodles had a nice chew to them. The soup also contained some decent-sized shrimp, velvetized sliced chicken, cubes of tofu and a boiled egg. I wished it had some vegetables in though because I felt very unhealthy eating just starch and protein, lol. I did enjoy it though ;) I had one of my husband's dumplings and it was good. It had ground pork in it and chopped up mushrooms. There was a slight gingery taste to it. I liked it and my husband liked them too. Service was very pleasant. The server refilled our waters regularly and I like that the water had ice in it and was very cold. The restaurant is not too large and has seating on a main level then up a few steps they have 4 more tables of 4 by the front window. All 3 were freshly made & ready for pickup in 10 minutes. Dumplings were soft, delicate & the peanut sauce was amazing. Gentlemen taking orders(owner?) was polite & efficient, repeating the order back again on pick up. Appetizer size portions were inexpensive and once we started eating, I almost placed a 2nd order as it was outstanding.

LOL. Portions are family style so bring a group with you to share. Salt and Pepper Pork Chop - easily the best dish, great crunch and great flavor. Snow peas sautéed with Garlic was clean, fresh and crunchy. Garlic flavor wasn't overly done. Beef Stew over Baby Bok Choy was tender and beefy. The Baby Bok Choy was hidden underneath in my picture, but it was there. There was also beef tendons as well which I always enjoy. Salt and Pepper Squid was a huge portion and similar to Pork, very crunchy. This was a huge portion. Got seated right away in a packed restaurant on a Friday evening. We wanted a bottle of cold sake and the waiter brought it in an ice bucket. Nice. We started with the pork dumplings. The dumplings were very goof but came in a hot thick sweet peanut sauce. With a lighter sauce these would have been outstanding. The scallop was huge and had a bunch of stuff on it. There was some good scallop flavor but it was masked with all the stuff that tasted like old oil. The noodle dish was good but also had some old oil flavor coming from somewhere. All the meats and vegetables were nice and fresh but the good sauce I think was the source of the oil. We saw a table next to us had the pork chops and was asked, what are those? So we got that too. The chops were thin bone in with a batter fried then soaked in a vinegar sauce. These would have been good as our only item with a bowl of rice. Our co-eaters there had many good looking things. I would give this a try again but would bring a few more people so we could try more stuff. Total for all that including the sake was $100 Canadian. Not bad!

Kim Fung is a in a shopping center and was pretty full but we were able to be seated right away. They brought up dishes on carts and we were able to order even though our table was in the corner. While we were there, the fire alarm was ringing. It did not seem like there was a fire, and three fire trucks even came to check things out, but no one inside the restaurant seemed concerned so everyone kept eating. The food was good but it was a little annoying eating with the fire alarm on. We ordered a lot of dim sum classics that we eat back home in California but it seemed like the prices were lower than what we normally pay back home. The bill once we figured our the CAD-USD conversion seemed very reasonable. If we're in town again and the fire alarm isn't loud, we'll try it again.
