I REALLY wanted to enjoy my birthday dinner, but unfortunately cannot recommend. The place was pretty packed for a weeknight. We had reservations so we did not need to wait long to be seated. Service overall was pleasant. There was a Happy Birthday note on the table which was really cute and appreciated. They didn't have enough menus for those they seat. We were initially provided one to share with apologies. Later they brought us another one. For a restaurant with these prices we would think they'd have enough menus printed for patrons. When we started to order we learned they were out of the house made bread and the marinated olives and toasted almonds. Our reservation was pretty early in the evening so, similarly to Seabird, we were dumbfounded how items like this were already not planned for well nor available with a small menu. We didn't want any other starter so moved along. I ordered the country steak bavette steak going against the risk from other reviews, but I really wanted steak. The steak was cooked med rare like requested. The steak itself was okay. The interesting part was the spread of green sauce and other did not add any flavor to the experience. It could not have been there and same difference. I can't say I'd order again. The Agate Burger was kind of dry and I would not order that again. Someone else had undercooked. Ours seemed over cooked. Like pizza, burgers are one of those items that I'm always shocked when it's not basic enjoyable. When you've made basic and delicious burgers at home, you know it would take extra work to make it unsatisfying. Everyone loves a grilled burger. Ling cod and prawns - Ling Cod was cooked REALLY well, but the overall dish lacked flavor and left you again unsatisfied. We asked to see the dessert menu (of which we were given 1), but even though it was my birthday we made the decision to skip dessert. We enjoyed dessert at home. Others seemed to have different experiences so you can decide, but it's not a cheap gamble. It was hard to ignore the glaring chipped wall right next to our table. I'm not really sure how I feel about the ambiance. Seems like a small thing, but the candle wasn't lit. Had to ask for a light. It wouldn't. Had to ask for another one to be brought. This restaurant is close to the ferry. It was hard to find initially as it is behind the back of the building where a brewery is attached. I went on a Saturday and it was pretty packed but we didn't wait long for a table for two. It is a nice vibe. My date ordered the arugula salad which had great flavor and the Filipino chicken dish and I ordered the Caesar Salad and the Ling Cod and Prawns dish. I didn't really care for the Caesar Salad maybe it was the addition of Taijin that threw it off. The Ling Cod and Prawns dish needed a little more salt but it was still a good dish. My date's meals were really good and I kinda wish I had his meal. The wait staff and bartender was attentive. Unfortuantely, our party was not happy with what we ordered with the Cheeseburger being under cooked and the $58 Steak dish which advertised brocollini was very tough (steak) and cooked rare when I had asked for Medium rare. Brocolli was substituted by the Kitchen and when I inquired about it, she went back to the kitchen and then came back out to inform us that they forgot to inform them of the substitution. The Manager did comp the steak as I had just a couple of slices and they offered to make another cheeseburger but the individual who ordered it declined. The Ling Cod ordered by another person in our group was very good as we tried a sample from his plate. The steak given the fact that the amount of brocolli and the preparation of the steak by the kitchen being presented sliced on the plate did not warrant the high price. read more

Only thing that would have made them better would have been some crispy Prosciutto. The waiter told me they tried that once, but the vegans freaked out because they didn't know what Prosciutto was! For dinner I had the scallops and daughter had the steak. Both were very good. We also had the chocolate cake/brownie for desert which was decadent. Service was very friendly and fast. Great food and service. Went for our Anniversary dinner. They treated us very special with a place card on our table and free dessert.

First things first: this place is expensive. Really expensive. Dinner for two with drinks (with no dessert) will easily run you over $100. That said, the food is excellent. Really. I got the Petrale Sole, which was fresh caught and cooked just right. It was served with Cauliflower, Capers, Almonds, and Grapes. It was really tasty. (My date tried it and said she found the Sole a little bit fishy, but I didn't think it was bad. Not at all. It's fish, after all! :) ). My date ordered the Halloumi, a cheese which was grilled, and served with garbanzo beans and broccoli. I tried a bite and really enjoyed it. I would never have thought to have grilled cheese as a main course, but this was quite good. And the service was exceptional. Our waiter, Joe, was on us the whole time we were there. We had a limited window for dinner, and he made every single moment so easy. It was a really enjoyable experience, and he made it more so. It's a nice restaurant, centrally located, snuggled up next to the Bainbridge Island Brewery. You can have beer with your dinner, BTW. It's not listed on the menu, but they serve at least a couple of BI Brewery's beers, if you have a hankering for beer (which we did). And afterwards (or before), you can always stop by for a beer next door! Also, if there's an event at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (including in its theater), you're about a 30 second walk away. So its a great place to go for a meal before heading over to the museum. Will I go back? Absolutely. But I'll probably check my wallet first. Haha. read more

Nice restaurant located in the heart of Bainbridge Island close to shopping and wineries. They have a good amount of indoor dining space as well as patio seating. The food is a bit more refined and unique with high-quality ingredients, making it one of the nicer options on the island. During our visit this summer we dined on bread with hummus and olive tapenade, steak, Dungeness crab, and halibut while sipping wine from a bottle we purchased. Each dish was very tasty and we enjoyed them during a beautiful evening on the patio. The outdoor dining area is dog friendly so there were a couple of cute and well-behaved doggos sitting with their humans. Agate restaurant is a great option for dining and I plan to return during an upcoming visit to Bainbridge. read more

Agate was a great spot for quality dining on the island. For appetizers, the cheese plate had a nice mix of flavors, the spinach salad was fresh but didn't blow my mind, and the fried Brussels sprouts were good but not my favorite flavor. We were invited by our family member to try Agate restaurant in Bainbridge. I was truly impressed by how scrumptious and beautiful the food was. We ordered crab cakes it was delicious. Then had scallops for entree- it melts in your mouth. If you'd like to try a romantic meal, i recommend agate. read more

Pretty good stuff. For the price, that's kind of what you'd expect, or at least hope for, but especially with Bainbridge that's not always the case. That said, by and large the menu definitely manages to live up to expectations - this is really fancy food. Nothing I tried here was *bad*. The "fresh market fish" was especially impressive - king salmon with Romesco sauce and a variety of bright, delicious greens. Altogether it was just a beautifully complex dish, super tasty, pretty much perfectly cooked. Ordering a $40 plate, this is definitely what I'd hope to get. Elk burger came with a mountain of fries and felt like definitely the best value on the menu. Burger itself was well cooked, toppings were nice, I would've liked if the smoked cheese was a little more obvious, maybe a thicker slice, but with the garlic aioli (served on the side) it was hard to stop from just devouring the whole thing as fast as I could - tied it together fantastically. The fries were kind of like McDonalds fries, both visually and in flavor; which isn't inherently a bad thing. With the rosemary salt, they were great, very tasty. That said, I wouldn't want to pay $8 for them - they didn't seem all that fancy, seems like the kind of thing that would be very straightforward and cheap to recreate at home. Great as an (included) side for the burger though. (Bone-in) Pork tenderloin was good but probably the biggest disappointment of the night. Didn't feel like all that hefty of a serving, (only exacerbated by the pointlessly huge plate they served it on) didn't seem to be cooked in a particularly special way, and the components of the plate just seemed too simple. Sauce didn't have much of a "wild peppercorn flavor", wasn't especially rich, and neither of the side vegetables were especially flavorful either. As a $15-2x something meal it'd be solid, for $40 I was pretty let down. Cocktails were a little disappointing. Presentation and serving size wasn't nearly as appealing as their fun names. I respect their creativity, but at the end of the day it just didn't feel worth the money. The maple bourbon bread pudding was great. Apparently they have a person do all the desserts in-house. Felt like a surprisingly good value, decent portion size compared to a lot of other expensive desserts I've shelled out for. Like the fries and pork, not beyond straightforward recreation but the vanilla gelato and candied pecans were about as good as they come, nice way to wrap up the evening. Price aside, the fresh market fish was the best plate food I've had on the island. If money is no object and you live on Bainbridge, this place is definitely worth a try. On the other hand, if you're like me, I'd maybe only come again for the burger on a special occasion - felt like the most loaded plate in terms of serving size, it was good and not so terribly expensive that it wasn't comparable with most other places on the island. read more

NOT worth the wait! We made a reservation for 7 and showed up early and asked to come back a little after 7pm. Did and didn't actually get seated for almost another 45minutes. We sat at the bar & the bartender reluctantly took our appetizer order. When we finally got seated - no wait staff for another almost 10 minutes when we knew what we wanted. Then another 30minutes for food. The food was good but not waiting for about an hour and half for! I was greatly disappointed by my prawn pasta and we were so tired from waiting for food and to be seated that we barely had an appetite. Plus we never were compensated, or celebrated even though the reservation had special event on it. Then we had to remind our waitress of our appetizer for the bill. We enjoyed a fabulous evening at this island gem last night. The service was outstanding as always and the food was delicious. We dined outside and had the perfect summer night to do so, cozy and lovely vibe. The creative combinations of flavors were a treat for the senses. The light yet flavorful King Salmon presentation was amazing and the halibut presentation was incredible as well. Both were complex and fresh and elevated already delicious fresh seafood. One of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Hands down. I'm questioning Yelp and Yelpers right now.. how did this place not appear as like THE top restaurant in Bainbridge? We got a table outside, it was a rainy night but they have their setup figured out! They have an umbrella and two heaters, also they play music that everyone at the table will love. On to the food! OK, so we loved the ambience, the starters (veal terrine, beef cabobs) were delicious. The Caesar salad was sub-par. I must interject here that the service was exquisite (thank you Cassie)! Great cocktails, awesome wine. However.... and I really do not like to say this, but the entrees were not so great. OK, so the scallops were perfectly cooked, yum, but just 3, could have eaten more. And the worst part was the steak, a New York strip, not particularly big, great frites along with it, and the steak was cooked to perfection! However....it was not tasty! My husband was impressed with the quality of the meat and it was "cooked perfectly"--might be the first time since living in the Seattle area he's said that... My wife and I have recently fallen in love with Agate and have been a couple times in the past few months. We live on the island and this is, hands-down, one of the finest restaurants on the island. The food is seasonal, of high quality, and generally delicious. Each time we've been, the menu has been different, and we've taken advantage of the variety of items to order several appetizers, main courses, sides and desserts. All were delicious--we haven't encountered a single item that we wouldn't enthusiastically order again. MAJOR bonus points to Agate for being creative with their use of vegetables and other plant-based ingredients for their dishes. As a vegetarian, this is extremely welcome and it speaks to the effort and thoughtfulness that Agate puts into their cuisine. High quality service from cheerful staff. Each experience has been a downright pleasure. Re: COVID--Agate has plentiful, spaced indoor and outdoor seating (we've eaten outside both times). All personnel were appropriately masked and were thoughtful regarding sanitary precautions. We felt 100% comfortable eating there and with the precautions they were taking, so props to Agate for that. Underwhelmed. We came here based on reviews. I had the St Patrick's Day special and my spouse had the scallops with polenta cakes with red pepper sauce. She said hers lacked any flavor, I tried a bite and yes they definitely seemed bland although cooked nice and correctly. My dinner had the typical corned beef, colored carrots, mashed potatoes and cabbage. My vegetables were good but the beef was as the title says, under whelming. Half was too tough to eat, must have been rushed to cooked. Can't say we'd come back. We live south of Bainbridge and were hoping for something more special as we hadn't been to this island since the 1980's. Oh well...... read more

The restaurant ambiance we very delightful, the service was top notch and the cuisine was exquisite. I have been to a few higher end restaurants where the actual experience and food quality didn't live up to the reputation but the Agate Restaurant exceeded my expectations. Agate restaurant is more than a place to eat, it's a artisan studio serving edible works of art. I love their pairings of nouvelle and provincial food. They offer colorful, locally-sourced vegan entrees anyone with tastebuds can enjoy! Agate's covered, outdoor patio is next to Bainbridge Island Art Museum. We have appetizers/drinks/dinner and chat after seeing an exhibition. Not even the Seattle Art Museum or SAAM has a proper restaurant in the same complex. read more

The reviews for this place are genuinely baffling bc this experience was sub mediocre. The food was especially so. The best thing we ate was the bread with whipped butter. For entrees, I got the halloumi plate, and it literally looked like something I would make at home when I'm in a hurry to throw dinner together. A piece of halloumi, some rice pilaf that wasn't any better than Whole Foods' boxed pilaf with chickpeas mixed in. My friends ordered the pasta and the burger and let's just say we all left food and politely declined to go boxes. The service was very sporadic and the coursing was way off; we waited a very long time for drinks, and then for the bread, and then for the entrees. The only person who was on top of it was the person refilling our waters -- she was by every 10 min it seemed and our waters were always full. Pretty much the only positive thing about this place was the location and that there's easy parking. Give this restaurant a hard pass. Seabird is definitely better, the brewery in the same complex is better, Blackbird Bakery is better etc etc etc read more
