We signed up for the Sunset Tree Climb in Silver Falls State Park, Oregon, and had an amazing time. Our leader Brennan was super chill and knowledgeable, and addressed all of our questions as well as providing us with the info needed to climb and descend a 300' tree safely. It was an amazing experience: challenging, rewarding, fun and thrilling. I 100% recommend this activity to people who like being outdoors and are at least moderately active. The was a short hike (about 20 mins/half-hour with some uphill, one steep part) to the tree and that was a good warm up. Plus the intro lesson on a tree near the parking lot that preceded the actual climb which was informational, practical and got my muscles moving. (Silver Falls is a beautiful park and we stayed in one the park's campground cabins which was a perfect way to end the day.) Thank You Brennan for a great experience! We are big fans of yours now! Happy Climbing!

I came across this randomly one day on the internet and knew that the tree climbing experience was something I had to try. I am always looking for something out of the ordinary to do and my boyfriend is always talking about his love of tree climbing from his younger days, so this seemed like a perfect fit for us. We've done some beginner rock climbing excursions in the past with other companies but I don't recall any of them being quite as high as this. I found a coupon, which made the price very reasonable and booked a few months in advance. This process was also very painless and hassle free. The tree we climbed is located on Bainbridge Island which can be a bit of a hardship, but they tell you which ferry is best to take from Seattle and may even pick you up at the terminal. You go on a short hike to the tree and may need to use the bathroom in the woods so be prepared for this. Looks like they may cancel for weather concerns, but you may also climb in the rain and get a little wet and dirty. Personally I would bring a jacket and not wear your best clothes. It takes awhile to get everyone harnessed up and ready to go. There's also a quick lesson and trial for each person on how to use the pulley type system and the rappel. While this is a unique skill set I did not find it be as athletically challenging as I thought it might be, but my boyfriend disagrees. They encourage you to swing out from the tree to ease your anxiety and verify for yourself that you are securely attached. This particular tree was 200 ft or so tall and had 5 ropes for climbers attached to it. If you make it to the top you can stand on branches. I hear the view is best on a clear day. Our guide was Leo and he was pretty great. He was understanding about us being poor planners and being late for our excursion. He was also up in the tree with us the entire time and did a great job of easing anxiety. I decided I only wanted to go about half way up the tree which was still super high and he was happy to let us come down early and walk us back to our car. This certainly is not for everyone, definitely not for those who are fearful of heights, but an experience that is very unique and worth checking out at least once.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tree climbing experience. It was such a unique experience. Although we had to use the battery pack to get up, we were grateful that it was available for someone like us. The view was amazing. We are looking forward to doing it again!

Matt was our guide and he was spectacular! He really helped us understand the motion of the climb. My sister and I did this climb 2 years in a row and each time was awesome. If you're thinking about trying this, absolutely do it!

However, we have experienced multiple negative interactions with the Manager, Jeremy Park. We felt that he selectively came out to speak with my family about policies of the gym, (other patrons were doing the same exact thing, but he did not address them about the exact same policies). We are not sure if it is because we are people of color, or just that fact that we have kids with us, but we do not feel comfortable when he is present at the gym. He single handedly makes the entire experience at the gym negative. There are many times, that we select days that he is not working so that we did not have to feel targeted, while being paid patrons at the gym with our family. We do like the other staff (we have never had any issues with any other employee) and the services that they provide. We hope this is not a consistent feeling that other families receive as well. In the future, we will be switching to another gym like bouldering project or vertical world, that is more inclusive to families. We hope this provides some insight for other families to make decisions on where they will take their children for a positive experience, so they get to love climbing as much as we do.

There's a reason why I keep coming back to Kaf guides. If you can dream it, they will help you do it! They are willing to work with you on designing the trip you want, they meet you where you are skill and fitness-wise, they are open to feedback, they are kind, patient and fair. I've been lucky to ice climb, crack climb, learn trad and rock rescue, practice avalanche rescue, and dial in my multipitch skills all with the Kaf crew. Even if you're more than just a beginner, you'll benefit from learning from highly skilled and experienced professionals whose passion for what they do is really evident. Their excitement is infectious, and you'll often find yourself in awe of their technical abilities and movement. Watching them in their element is a gift. They make sound decisions to keep you and themselves safe from the many objective dangers in the wild. They'll celebrate the smallest of wins with you, and offer encouragement and support to keep trying. I've heard that you shop for a guide, not a guide service, and this is really true once you get to know this team. Special mention to Woody who has guided me for 90% of it - about 130 hours to date! His problem-solving skills are so impressive and there is no guide I trust or respect more. And Mick who is the heart and soul of Kaf. Mick will have you smiling all through the online courses which are an excellent way to dip your toe into the world of climbing and mountaineering. I'm so excited for more adventures with Kaf in the years to come.
