The tour lasted about 75 mins with narration and actual walk to the underground. My daughter and I came for the 10 am tour and it was huge crowd. It was a nice history behind Seattle. The host was funny and very entertaining. The tour consists of walking on some uneven grounds, narrow paths and stairs. It was a nice way to get a taste of how Seattle was born!

My niece and nephew (high school age) who I took on this tour with me have insisted that I write a 5-star review for our tour guide Andie. They enjoyed it that much! This was the 2nd time doing this tour for myself and my dad (which was in 2018). We saw different parts of the underground and learned different things. And as much as the kids loved our tour guide this time, my dad liked the one we had before better. Differences in the aspects of history focused on and the humor. We'll chalk it up to a generational thing. I appreciated the humor, especially the political digs. And the teens were super into it. I didn't see them on their life support devices (cell phones) even once. And really, there's not much of a higher review than that! It was absolutely a fun and interesting tour. And I always appreciate a tour you can enjoy multiple times. I just learned that my Seattle bestie hasn't done this tour yet. So I expect to be back soon. And I have to add that the woman who assisted us with purchasing tickets and whatnot was really nice and friendly too.

Bill Speidel'sUnderground Tours is an absolute must if you want to dive into the hidden history beneath the city. The tour is fascinating, well-paced, and full of stories that bring the past to life in unexpected ways. Special shout-out to Rose-hands down the BEST tour guide! She has the perfect mix of knowledge, humor, and storytelling ability. Rosie doesn't just give facts; she makes you feel like you've stepped back in time and are part of the history yourself. Her energy kept the entire group engaged, and she answered every question with insight and charm. If you book this tour, do yourself a favor and ask for Rose-You won't regret it!

We had such a great tour guide (Monica) that made the experience really fun! She had a great sense of humor with a seamless and witty delivery. The tour is a pretty good bang for your buck because you get so much history out of the tour in addition to getting to do the walkthrough. We learned so much about how Seattle started, the great fire, and how the city rebuilt in addition to getting to see what's left of the original underground storefronts. Overall would recommend!

So I went to this underground tour really excited about it because my cousin suggested it. The whole wedding party went to it a few years ago with all of her Australian friends and they said it was really great. So maybe I was expecting more, but I was really disappointed. He explained the underground, and that was a good history about Seattle and was interesting, but our tour guide was absolutely horrible. Adam. I was being supportive and smiling and nodding, but then, for some reason, he turned on me when I wasn't paying attention (not my fault he was being boring at the time )and in front of the whole tour, basically belittled me and was very condescending to me.. that is not very professional. Basically, he said," oh, do I need to draw a picture?" "You don't know the answer to the question?!" I think I was just his target because I was a blonde woman. Very sexist. So rude! I have never in all of my travels, have ever had a tour guide do that to me so begrudgingly in public. He should be fired! Absolutely awful and horrible! By the way, no tour guide, comedian or any person should ever make fun of a woman or try to make blonde jokes in this day of age. It is very offensive and sexist. And it's also not very funny anymore because those jokes have been OVERdone for 100 years or so so it just means the comedian has nothing else and he's not very good at his job because if that's what he relates to that's really sad. As a person who has heard these jokes for her whole life, and then trying to go on a tour for fun, and then hearing those kind of jokes again, it's really upsetting, offensive, and not very funny, and also not original. It's old and tiring and needs to be thrown out. Come up with newer jokes. Then he also tried to hustle us out the door when we were trying to take pictures for our video and content creation. I'm a content creator. Just because he doesn't like his job doesn't mean he has to hustle us out at the door. He was only trying to hurry us up because he wanted to get off the clock sooner. His name is Adam and he is absolutely horrible.

We reserved in advance an 11:00 a.m. Monday tour from one of our options of the CityPASS. The guided tour lasted about an hour and 15 minutes. You walk underground and then above ground a few times and learn about the history of the underground and Seattle. There are stairs and some tight spaces involved, so it may not be suited for everyone. There is a small gift area at the end of the tour. Restrooms are available before and after the tour. Restaurants, bars, sightseeing, and tourist attractions are nearby, as you are in the Pioneer Square area of the city.

When I used to visit my Dad back when he lived in Seattle, this was one of our favorite things to do in the city. The Underground Tour is a fun way to learn about Seattle's history. After the the Great Fire of 1889, Seattle rebuilt on top of the old city. This left many of the old storefronts and sidewalks buried underground. Today you are able to tour these tunnels and see much of the old city. The tour guides not only give you a history lesson about the city of Seattle, they add a little humor to it. It is a fun tour and I always enjoy going on it. Bill Speidel is the founder of the Underground Tour and has written a couple of books about Seattle's history. The start of the tour is located in Pioneer Square. There is bar in the lobby area that offers food and drinks as you are waiting for your tour. The Underground Tour also offers an adult-only tour called The Underworld Tour. This tour is a stroll through the old red-light district and talks about Seattle's prostitution history. It has more humor in it and includes an adult beverage.

This was a pretty cool and unique experience. I was disappointed the group size was so large but they at least split us into two. Being under the city was a very cool experience, though it got quite hot at times. Unfortunately while travelling between entry points we saw a lot of unhoused people doing drugs which was uncomfortable.

I was born & raised in Seattle & had never done this tour. It was very interesting. Our guide was Clay. He was very animated & funny. I think it's more intriguing to think you're walking in a city under the current city than there are fascinating things to see. I'm glad I finally did it though.

As a fan of underground labyrinths and musty basement odors, I knew I was going to love this tour. Then came the history of this underground. Chief Si'al and the Duwamish & Suquamish people later Si'al becomes "Seattle", the founders of Seattle (Yester & Denny), The Great Fire (1889), the rebuild over the ruins) and the frenzied Gold Rush (1897). Then to my surprise, the tour guide pivoted from historian to stand=up comedian. You got to love that. The tour cost $21 for adults. It is a little bit over an hour long. There are stairs which take you up and down. And there is a small museum at the end. At the beginning of the tour there is a bar serving alcoholic beverages. What is not to like?

Exploring Seattle's Underground History! I was invited to experience Bill Speidel's Underground Tour in Pioneer Square, an hour-long adventure beneath the streets of Seattle. The tour is strict on timing, so be sure to arrive early--don't expect flexibility or same-day tickets! If your friends have a time already booked. Our guide kept the group entertained with puns while diving into the history of Seattle's founders, Yesler & Denny. However, the tour noticeably skimmed over the origins of the area and the Duwamish tribes, which felt like a missed opportunity to fully acknowledge the foundation of this land. It's definitely a unique way to learn about Seattle, but I'd love to see a more inclusive narrative included in the storytelling. Have you taken the tour? What are your thoughts?

E T.

It was interesting! Very informative and entertaining. Our tour guide wore a great purple outfit to standout, robe and all. He was very funny throughout the tour. There's a lot of walking and climbing stairs. I wouldn't recommend this tour for children under 12 or adults with difficulties walking or climbing. Wish their bar would be open and not just for show.

Lana E.

After living in Seattle for over 30 years, finally did the underground tour. This was SO much fun! Our tour guide Adam was awesome, lots of hilarious tongue in cheek jokes (some may not be appropriate for kids), lots of history, humor, and some spooky walks under ground. Definitely recommend! Really enjoyed it, well worth the ticket.

Bill Speidel's Underground Tour Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Bill Speidel's Underground Tour

Has the Underworld tour resumed? There do not seem to be tickets available no longer how far out I look on the calendar.

It has. We went in 6/27/23. I called and left a voice mail and they returned my call in a few hours and rebooted the system. Call the number in the website for more help but I think it was (206) 682-4646.

Has the Underworld Adults Only Night tour been discontinued?

No, not at all. We're gradually resuming all of our offerings as the pandemic abates. Stay tuned and we'll let you know when the Underworld Tour returns.

Due to some changes wit covid, are yall stil requiring proof of vaccination or negative covid test? If so, is a Test at home test applicable?

Effective immediately, March 11, the Underground Tour no longer requires that customers provide proof of covid vaccination or a negative covid test. Until further notice, customers still are required to wear masks indoors, however.

Do you have to be vaccinated for the This tour?

You must show proof of vaccination or a recent negative covid test result.

Is the Underground Tour closed due to Covid?

Nope! Just wear a mask when indoors or underground.

Does anyone know if the tours are open? Website allows booking but recording says their closed..

They are open. We went 8/1/21.

How much does it cost?

I believe it was $22.00

Do you have to print the tickets or can they scan them from my phone?

You don't need to print tickets in advance or even show us a scan on your phone. Just give us your last name or your phone number.

About how many stairs are on the tour? I realise we are going underground so I'm thinking at least 1 flight down and 1 flight up, but is there a significant amount of additional stairs? It doesn't have to be exact, but just to get a ballpark idea.

There is probably one flight each way, but the tour goes underground and above a few times. So maybe four flights total plus a step or two here and there...maybe? I hope that helps.

Are cameras allowed on the tour?

For sure! Bring a flashlight too. Enjoy!

Is it cold?

No - it was not cold. We visited in March

What's the difference between the normal tour and the adult underworld tour? Is the adult one the normal tour with the red light district added on? Or are they two fully unique tours?

Our tour guide used "seamstress" to describe anything on the normal tour to do with the red light aspect and only referenced it; on the other tour he said it was an adult tour the delved into the red light aspect

Gonna be in town ina few weeks and this popped up in the must see place list.ive had back surgeries so i usually have some issues with stairs and slopes.my question is how many sets of stairs will we encounter and how uneven is the walking overall?

There are many sets of stairs and unevenness as others have said. I have some back problems too. I didn't have trouble with the stairs. But the worst part for me was the seating in the beginning; 2/3 of the benches had no backs. I had to sit way… Read more

Wondering what others felt about the late night underworld tour? We are visiting Seattle with friends and wanted to know if this is worth the time for one of our evenings in Seattle.

We didn't do the late night tour, ours was an early morning tour and it was great. I don't want to ruin any surprises, but we found it good that it was during the day because it made being under the city sidewalks more interesting when you realized… Read more

On Saturday, the 21st, four of us were scheduled to go and do this tour and we were extremely excited. After dealing with the atrocious Seattle traffic and terrible parking situations down by the pier I was already very frustrated. Our party arrived at the Ye Olde Curiosity Shop at 7:04 for our 7:00 pm tour and asked the worker where the tour meets to which the rude worker just replied under their breath, "they left" and returned to work.I explained that I understood we were late but were hoping we could catch up with them. I asked that same worker where the tour meets and they said, "In a big group outside" and continued to work. While we were on the pier in Seattle this information was not helpful. Trying to salvage the night, we went outside and tried to walk around and look for a "big group of people" on the crowded Seattle pier on a Saturday night. After a few minutes I went back inside he shop frustrated and asked the worker if they could find someone that was actually helpful that could answer some questions. With some reluctancy this person called their accommodating manager who explained that the tour heads to the right and described exactly what the tour guide was wearing. Ultimately we were unable to catch up with our tour guide because of how much time was wasted with this worker who was unwilling to help us at all. Again I understand we were late, but stuff happens. This place needs to hire people who have customer service skills.

Found a Groupon and thought we'd give it a whirl. I've been on the Underground Tour before and…read morethought this might be a different perspective. First off, the Groupon was a nice deal, however the reservation process was a bit challenging. You must reserve a minimum of 48 hours in advance. And they are closed Tuesday& Wednesday in slower months. I followed the directions and emailed my request in for a Thursday 6 pm walk. (Friday and Saturday were unavailable for Groupon) Apparently I put the incorrect Groupon code so received an email requesting correct code. After another email, I was confirmed. The emails are a bit overwhelming and require you to read all rules and stipulations regarding cancellation policy..and I imagine they were created because of multiple problems with third party discounts, but I suggest perhaps toning down the big print and bold highlights to a more tourist friendly approach as it was a tad off putting for a first impression. So, all Groupon issues aside, we arrived at the address provided a half hour early (always better to be early than late!). There are multiple parking lots available throughout the address, as well as metered street parking. As a disabled person, I was able to find a spot right in front with a placard for free. We walked down a steep stairway into a very fitting dungeon like storefront. We were greeted by a friendly lady who found our reservation and said we could walk about the DEATH MUSEUM until 6 when our tour would meet just to the right of the counter. There is a small gift shop with mostly local products. The museum has some interesting information and displays that reflect all aspects of death, from embalming utensils, death masks, photos of deceased, mourning attire, coffins, hair embellishments and more. Nice touch. At 6 we met in the pews, and were greeted by our tour guide, Graham.. A "portly" (lol) gentleman with a charismatic presence. He spoke with enthusiasm and provided recordings, pictures and videos throughout the tour. The walk itself is easy. The tour is 90 minutes and only covers a few blocks of Pioneer Square. There are several sets of steep stairways that are part of this tour. It is not wheelchair or stroller accessible. At the end of the tour we were aka to walk through their own "underground" in the dark with flashlights they provided. This was pretty cool. I really am intrigued by the whole underground here in Seattle. I did enjoy the tour, and our guide was great.. However I felt like there wasn't a lot of substance. I have done the UNDERGROUND TOUR below, so I am a little familiar with Seattle's history and I would have liked to hear a little more area history and visited more buildings. This is not a HAUNTED TOUR. There is no-one jumping out at you or spooky sound effects. This is a tour based on evidence and local stories and lore of paranormal experiences. You can be a believer, a skeptic or a non believer.. You are given the facts, the stories, the lore and evidence and you can form your own opinion. All in all it was a good PG intro to the world of yesteryear in Seattle. I hear there is a pub tour for adults only and think this may have been a better option, however it was not available through the Groupon. Overall..skip the Groupon and book an adult only tour. Till our next visit to Seattle... :)

We felt like Lynn could have been a long lost cousin who wanted to share her love for her city with us. We will be back to catch the rest of the Seattle story. Thank you Lynn a hundred times over.

REVIEW OF OUR SEATTLE LOCKS, GASWORKS PARK & HOUSEBOATS TOUR--ONE OF THE SEATTLE UNDER THE RADAR…read moreTOURS My wife and I visited Seattle for the first time in April 2022. As part of our visit, we booked a tour titled "The Locks, Gasworks Park and Houseboats Tour." The tour is one of "The Seattle Under the Radar Tours" and was billed as a chance to see Seattle "through the eyes of a local." For us, that "local" was Tour Guide Lynn Curtis, who (if I remember correctly) said she had lived in Seattle for 11 years. Our tour with Lynn took place on the afternoon of Friday, April 22nd. It was a beautiful, sunny day and perfect for a tour of Seattle. Twenty-four hours before the tour, Lynn emailed us to confirm we knew where to meet, what to expect on the day of the tour and to answer any pre-tour questions. That was much appreciated and helped assure us we we're working with a professional. The tour rendezvous point was in front of a bakery within walking distance from the Seattle waterfront and marketplace district where we parked our car. Lynn arrived a little early and after introducing herself, invited us to accompany her into the bakery for a complimentary pastry and beverage. Afterwards, Lynn directed us to her personal vehicle--a spacious and clean SUV parked just outside the bakery. To our pleasant surprise, we learned we were her only guests for this tour. Our more than three-hour private tour began with a drive to the Seattle Ballard Locks to see and learn how the locks work to permit the movement of small and large boats. The locks are located at the west end of Salmon Bay, in Seattle Washington's Lake Washington Ship Canal, between the neighborhoods of Ballard to the north and Magnolia to the south. On the drive to the locks, Lynn pointed out various points of interest and once there, shared her wealth of knowledge about the locks. A highlight of this stop was seeing the salmon swimming up the salmon ladders and watching the boats enter and leave the locks. Next, it was on to "Gas Works Park." The park sits on the former Seattle Gas Light Company gasification plant. What makes the park so appealing and a must see for tourists like us, is its location: the north shore of Lake Union at the south end of Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood. It offers breathtaking views of Lake Union and the Seattle skyline. A highlight of this part of the tour, was getting there. On the drive over, Lynn once again shared interesting facts and stories about the neighborhoods we passed through, as only a local could do. Another highlight of the tour was a surprise stop at Ivar's Salmon House restaurant. The restaurant specializes in American and Seafood cuisine and is located on the north shore of Lake Union. Lynn said she personally recommends it to her tour guests who love American and Seafood cuisine, but we learned the food is not the only reason it's a tour stop: its stunning Northwest native art, décor and historical photographs, including a full cedar replica of a Northwest Native American longhouse, are the other reasons. We were so impressed with Ivar's, that we came back that evening for dinner. With the exception of a challenge finding nearby parking, it was a wonderful experience. Our final destination was a visit to a secluded Seattle neighborhood where many residents live in beautiful multilevel houseboats--some valued in excess of $1 million--with their own private docks. This neighborhood is not on your typical Seattle tourist's itinerary and would be difficult to find and traverse without a local like Lynn. If you're looking for a Seattle tour that's well worth your money, this is it. We highly recommend it and highly recommend Lynn. She was great. Thank you Lynn!
