Yes, I do watch America Ninja Warrior: How did you know? And YES! I DID see that hilarious intro to that one episode of The Office where Michael and Dwight do their version of parkour. Yes, yes, yes. I've watched the YouTube parkour videos. Remember when you were little, and you would hop from furniture to furniture, effortlessly figuring out the most efficient way to get from point A to B? Well, when you grow up, it's called parkour ;) The gym set-up is all that I had hoped it would be. Wall structures, vaults, rings, boxes, balancing pipes--the works. I signed up online for the free 90-min (indoor) class on Sunday. At the last moment, my husband decided to try it out too, even though he was wearing slacks. We all warmed up by balancing/walking on pipes forwards and backwards in bare feet. (Much easier to do without shoes on.) We then moved on to some basics like squat-sitting, floorwork, some light vault work, and then we were given an entire course within the gym to do! Jump on one board, slide down another, under/over bars, jumping/rolling over boxes, climbing, and then jumping off the loft structure to land on the giant mat. SO MUCH FUN! I couldn't stop smiling and laughing while running the course over and over. Ari and Ox were safety-conscious fools! The way that they explained momentum and body mechanics was completely relatable and easy to apply right away. Well, I'm not saying I looked good doing it, but at least I knew what they were saying. I'm going to try an outdoor class soon, and try to figure out how I can schedule a day during the week for indoors. And...it's hard not to look at everyday objects and wonder what I could do to get to/over/by/around/through it if I actually got decent at it.

As a caveat: I have yet to visit Rafe and Tyson's new gym. The extent of my experience is with a free intro to Parkour seminar that Rafe taught at Northwest Crossfit before they opened their own gym. ABOUT PARKOUR Parkour is tough to describe if you haven't seen it before. Many think of it as a hybrid of gymnastics and running. The pros do it at breakneck speed and seem to have a preference for abandoned buildings and industrial ruins. Want to know more? YouTube and Wikipedia have eye candy and good, basic info. ABOUT RAFE Rafe is a good teacher, no doubt about it. He's excellent at sequencing for beginners and he's very up front about what you should and shouldn't try when you're just starting out. There were a couple of avoidable injuries in the class I attended, but they were due mainly to the fact that Rafe wasn't capping his classes then and was unprepared to handle the number of people who turned out for a lesson. But this was an exceptional situation--and really, a testament to how quickly Parkour is exploding as a sport. The format of a normal class is (as I understand it) totally different, with constant, close supervision from your coaches. If you're not already a traceur and want to learn how to jump around like a crazy monkey, leave your ego at the door, pay attention to your instructor, and drill your skills over and over and over. It takes a lot of time and patience, especially if you're past your prime (on a gymnast's scale) like I am. But if you work hard, practice safe, and don't get drunk on your prowess, you'll be rewarded with supernatural balance and strength, and the camaraderie of a growing, tightly-nit community of fellow traceurs who will help you push your body beyond what you ever thought possible.

So far, I've only met trainers Justin and Ox, but both were helpful, approachable and ready to teach.

I regularly attend the FIT workouts, and I appreciate that each month brings a new routine, allowing you to track your progress within the month. They provide all the necessary equipment - cycling shoes for spin, and balls, mini bands, weights, and mats for barre. They also make fitness fun. Cycling and barre classes often have themed music or events. Plus, they host special happenings like Friday free classes and group donation competitions. Beyond the classes, canceling and pausing your membership is incredibly easy - just email them, and they'll adjust it for the next billing cycle. The front desk staff are also very knowledgeable and friendly, always willing to help and answer any questions.

I bought a Groupon for the 28 day work out for Ian Fitness. I was actually impressed with the gym…read moreclasses offered here. The fitness instructors, Chris and John were really nice and enthusiastic to help us lose weight and get fit. They asked us what our fitness goals were and we shared what we hoped to gain from the classes. In the 28 days, I went about 60% of the time. I wish they had a gym in North Seattle because the Queen Anne location is a bit of a drive for me, especially during high traffic time (6:15 p.m. class). There is plenty of parking at this facility. I really enjoyed the week day classes inside the gym. It doesn't get so crowded that you stand around. Both John and Chris were really great in helping us have the right posture while doing each work out routine so that we wouldn't insure ourselves. You end up doing a lot of squats and stomach exercises. During the first few classes, I was sore beyond belief. It really helped strengthen my muscles. On the weekends, you meet at a park in Queen Anne. While we worked out, we also played games. This was both entertaining and a great opportunity to become more in shape. The only minor critique I have is that their pricing structure is a bit steep. For those who don't have a great amount of disposable income, $100+ per month (can't remember the exact amount) is really expensive. I understand that gym memberships are expensive but this is on the pricier side. If you do the math, it is more than $1,000 a year for exercise classes. There is class pass offered in the Seattle area for $79, which gives you access to many different gyms around the city. I am aware that they have promotions but it only lasts for a limited amount of time. Aside from their pricing, I'd say that their instructors and facilities are top notch. I thoroughly enjoyed taking work out classes here. Oh yah, I forgot to mention that the recipes that the gym sends out are great. They email healthy recipes to those on their email chain. My friend who attends Ian, tried out a couple of dishes and really liked it.

Their website looks like it was built by a 13-year old banned from Facebook. It has no pricing…read moreinformation, no clear information on what they actually do, or class timings. What it has is a picture of Ian when he was 10. Why would anyone not looking for a middle school yearbook give a $*it about that? You'll have to ask him. It also has a bunch of before-after pictures of people who supposedly got results. Speaking of which... I called 3 times in the past week and each time got a voicemail that tried too hard to appear jovial. No one returned my calls. I don't know whether the people that train there are telepaths, or they actually stopped by in person just to get a brochure, but the cheesy website, fake voicemail greeting and non-existing customer service killed it for me.
