Can we amend the "Great" summary of our five star rating to "spectacular"? Beach Camp has been the highlight of my son's summer for the last three years. He is already looking forward to next year, and to someday being a CIT and a counselor himself. This is an incredible place, with fantastic counselors, and a plethora of fun activities. The place isn't incredible because it's a five-star, fancy establishment. In fact, some parts are downright rustic or rough around the edges. But it's the opportunities the place presents to the lucky kids who get to go there. The chance to enjoy this magical environment where we live, to get to know nature and get to try lots of moderns ways to take play in it. Imagine spending a week exploring indoor activities (ninja gym, soccer and hockey, climbing walls, a skate park, marine biology lessons, a movie room) and outdoor adventures (swimming docks, a zip line into the water, snorkeling, skimboarding, paddleboarding, kayaking, zodiacs, creek walks, field games, campfires, beach combing, getting up close with wildlife (crabs, fish, bioluminescent aquatic creatures, sea lions), a trapeze into the water, a rock climbing wall over the water, high dives, low dives....and wetsuits to enjoy it all in the cool Puget Sound water). The people are a huge part of making it such a special and an amazing experience. Every one of them that we've interacted with--from the newest CITs to the camp director--really care about the kids having a memorable experience. They are fun and kind and a great mix of serious/ensuring safety (from multiple lifeguards to lifejacket use to an overnight dock watch just in case any campers decide to sneak out for a midnight swim) and silly/letting kids escape for a growth week at camp. My son has such a fantastic time hanging out with these great kids, and he really looks up to them and hopes his favorites return each year. I read the review about the young camper being thrown off the mats and pulled by her lifejacket off the paddleboard. I don't know what happened there, but her experience is different than that of the eight kids I know personally and well who have gone over the last two years, four of whom were repeat campers in 2021. In fact, when you ask, "What was your favorite part of camp?" At least half reply, "The green docks," which is code for the games that they play where counselors AND kids throw each other off the docks in the "Ocean Fun Zone." I don't get why that's more fun than zodiac rides, but they love it. And they assure me that no one is forced to play that game--there are "safe zones" on and near the green docks that are sacred, and you don't even have to go out there if you don't want to be part of that game. We are grateful for the memories already made at beach camp, and excited for more fun in the years ahead. read more

My son went to this camp the first day he arrived a girl from a different cabin got a concussion in addition many other children were put on a very small dock and were told to rock back and forth until everyone fell off many children even got stuck underneath the dock read more

As a camper at this camp it was a horrible experience for me and my friends. My 2nd day at this camp someone pushed my friend off the dock and he broke his ribs the counselor then said he was fine and did not let him contact his parents. Good thing I snuck my phone and my mom to pick me up. I would not recommend this to any families. read more

As a veteran middle school teacher who has known scores of students who have attended this camp over the years, I would like to warn parents about the "boys will be boys" mentality that is promoted at this camp. It's beyond complicity; sexualized behaviors/chatter seem to be encouraged and laughed about and are extremely prevalent. My female students come back from camp thinking that it's OK for boys to talk to them in a certain way (and about certain things), even though it makes them very uncomfortable. read more

This camp not only offers amazing views with direct access to the Puget Sound, but is a camp that teaches your children water sports and marine science in a supportive, educational environment. My children were a little hesitant to go to their first sleep away camp, but when I returned at the end of the week, they had a new found self confidence in themselves and being on the water. The staff and office here are very accommodating and easy to reach. They answered all of my questions and concerns I had. Definitely sending my family back here next season. read more

Hello ACA staff, I am a long time camp director and staff member of numerous summer camps and writing as a parent who sent my 11 year old to Beach Camp at Sunset Bay last summer. My son broke his leg on the first morning of activities (skim boarding) and I was not contacted for over 24 hours. In addition, the only medical support he was given was ice packs. They never consulted a medical professional (in person or by phone and they are only minutes away from full service medical care) - the only caregivers were young camp counselors with basic first aid training. While there were some caring counselors it never occurred to any of them to call me or consult a medical professional. My son literally hopped around camp with a broken tibia (at the ankle) and sat in pain in the camp office for 24 hours. In my experience as a Camp Director - we had nurses on-site or on-call. This place had neither (and no one with any medical training beyond basic first aid) and said they thought his ankle was sprained - which still would warrant a medical assessment. When I arrived 24 hours later after finally being called, I could tell through a one minute assessment that it was a serious injury. The camp owner is often on site and never once checked in on my son. AVOID THIS CAMP!!! I know other kids have had fun here but I would never send my son or recommend this place. read more

Beach Camp at Sunset Bay is truly an unbelievable sleep-away summer camp for kids. I cannot put into words the amount of fun that is packed into the week my step son had at this camp. The camp offers stand up paddle boarding, sea kayaking, tubing, wake boarding, skim boarding, beach biking, ocean zip lining, snorkeling, snuba, and so much more. On the dock itself there is a skate board ramp, batting cage, and floor hockey rink that doubles as a basketball court. We have been sending our family to the camp for a couple years and every year the kids make new friends and learn something new. Beach Camp created a marine biology and ocean stewardship program that the kids loved. They went on snorkel safaris and discovered sea stars, anemones, crabs, and wolf eels! They have a 100% guarantee that the kids will have their best week ever and we know why. From sun up to sun down, the experiences they have on the Puget Sound are like no other summer camp we have ever experienced. I think my son really liked the time spent around the beach bonfires and bioluminescent snorkeling. He witnessed baby seals on the beach too! The camp supplies everything including wetsuits, boots, and have a hot tub too for the kids too. Camp Director Annie Crawley instills confidence and hires an incredible team of instructors plus runs a leadership training and development for the teens. Her photography work is featured on the dock and she is a true inspiration to all the campers. My kid loves this camp and I totally trust them. We were surprised how every single camper is treated with respect and how much the kids really love this camp. We are sending him back this summer. read more

I noticed no reviews for this year, so I feel obligated to provide a warning to families considering sending their children here. My 7 y/o daughter was shoved off the pier at this camp by a counselor in training, a 15 or 16 year old boy. He and other male counselors were doing this to 8 year old girls and my daughter begged him not to push her. He told her he would "let her pass", when she tried to pass by him he shoved her in the water. She was so scared the rest of this day, her first day in the camp, she couldn't eat. Several other campers experienced this, along with being dragged from paddleboards by counselors by their life jackets into the water. There was very little adult oversight for the 8 hours my daughter was there, the supervisor was a 23 year old man, who told me he was not supervising their time out on the dock. One girl hit her head on the dock when she was being pushed into the water and when she came up was crying. Her counselor told her she was "fine" and when the girl said "Don't you care that I got hurt?" the counselor said "No you are fine." My daughter was TERRIFIED to return to camp, as were several other girls from this camp. When these events were reported to the executive director the next day, his response was "Boys will be boys." As the mother of 1 girl and 2 boys, I don't feel that a teenage boy shoving a 7 year old girl into the ocean to terrify her is excusable, certainly not under that tired and inappropriate saying. I genuinely am concerned about the safety at this camp and withdrew my daughter. I wish I had a way to contact the parents of other children there so they know what is happening. Something has changed with this camp, and I hope someone can stop this before a child is hurt. read more

I was basically going to write everything Elisa did so her review saved me some time, but what she did leave out is the sense of confidence and pride your child has after a week at this camp. I know 100% she made memories to last a lifetime. This year was my daughter's first time at a sleep away camp and she went in with some trepidation. When I picked her up she was so happy. Thanks to the whole staff for an amazing first time experience for my 8 year old daughter. She fell in love with beach camp and had an amazing time, and she is very excited to go back next year as an overnight camper. Each day, she would tell me stories of her adventures, from snorkeling, platform jumping, and paddle boarding, to the different sea creatures she got to see or touch each day. It was truly an unforgettable experience for her. She also really enjoyed the social experience that comes with getting to know different campers/counselors and the great opportunity this provides her to develop relationships with friends outside the home (as an only child, this is critical, esp during these times). I think your program is so great for young ones to build self-confidence while learning new skills, in addition to an appreciation and reverence for our wonderful natural beach environment. read more

This truly is as good as it gets. My 2 boys just finished a week at camp. This was their first sleep away camp experience. It was perfect in every way. The staff was very engaging and the activity options the kids had was almost unbelievable. They had great fun, they learned a lot and they left with great memories that I hope will carry over until they return next summer. read more
