We've been looking for authentic gyros. Been in Texas 7 years and this one hit the mark. But and it's a big but!! We ordered a plate( meat, pita,potatoes, sauce ). Portion size small. So we ordered extra meat ($10)- turns out that was two skimpy fork fulls of meat. No onion/tomato garnish, 1/2 container of tzaki sauce. Service was good. The smell was there, the flavor was there. Spent $60 on food for two, that barely fed one. Considering the garnish( if given) ,potatoes,pitas and sauce, are minimum in cost. Meat should have been a bit more generous. read more

Presentation & service were immaculate (our waitress Zima was superb), leaving diners feeling at home or in the Mediterranean. Music was subtle & peaceful, not overbearing. Pita bread has an edge of garlic and is classily soft & fresh. They will even wrap it to-go in foil if you have any left over. Our starting soups were simply divine -- my lentil was so nice & warm & my partner's avgolemono shone as if it were the light. Let me hone in on the Lemon Caper Red Snapper. Thick & perfectly done, dressed with delectable sauce rightly dotted with sizable capers, this was probably the best fish dish I've had in a decade. Absolutely a premier entree of this establishment & the Harker Heights area. My party enjoyed the decent sized Kofta meat serving with a nice cinnamon-y red sauce & the roasted cauliflower was hearty as they come. There are some really nice GF (gluten-free) options on the elegant menu & the chef will even work with you if you have specific needs or requests. Speaking of chef, it's cool to be able to look into the kitchen window from the dining room to see the hard work going on for accountability & cleanliness. I'm a big fan of transparency & the love between chefs/cooks & diners because the energy is palpable in a positive way here that makes you appreciate the experience so much more. Externally it was unassuming restaurant, but inside it was nicely decorated and clean. Our waitress was attentive! Acropolis - Bad Service Very disappointed with the Waitress and Management at Acropolis Restaurant. We had planned to celebrate a bday dinner with friends at their establishment. They refused to sit us all together, so we all had to sit at different tables far apart from each other, so we couldn't even celebrate properly. Mind you that the whole time, the waitress was very rude and condescending the way she spoke to us. Then they had the audacity to try and charge us 20% gratuity for having 5 or more in our party. We called the Manager over to resolve the issue, but he too was just as rude and condescending. We refused to pay 20% gratuity, as we were all separated by different tables far apart from each other, plus the rudeness from both the waitress and manager doesn't deserve a tip! We tip all the time, but these guys need to understand, service starts when u seat us, take our orders, and bring our food, but it doesn't stop there. You serve well, being attentive, and making the whole experience pleasant, that's what constitutes a tip. These people need to understand that tipping and gratuity is optional, gratuity is a sum of money given to someone for exceptional service as a token of appreciation or gratitude, hence the word, "Gratuity!" read more

Pleasantly surprised by this place! The interior is well-designed with mood lighting and live music at a good volume in the background so you can still enjoy your conversation. We were seated promptly and didn't have to wait. They don't have an updated drink menu which was a little bit of a disappointment, but the waitress helped me pick out a nice glass of wine. The four dips appetizer was tasty. For my entree, I had the traditional wrap with gyro meat and a side of rice. It was delicious! The serving was large and I couldn't finish it. My wife got the lamb chops and I got the lamb shanks and OMG!! Lamb shanks are now my favorite!! I came for a late lunch and I can't wait to go back! This was the best Greek food I've ever had, and I say this as someone who has lived in culinary Meccas like Miami, Fl and Los Angeles, CA. Most of the time when I read a menu, I find just a handful of things that I would want to order, but at Acropolis I found myself wanting to try everything on the menu. I'm definitely going to be coming back regularly to give each item a try. For this time, my husband and I ordered the baked feta, he got the gyro plate, and I had the mussels. Our server was kind enough to offer to prepare the first two servings of the baked feta for us, demonstrating the intended way of enjoying the plate. This added so much to our experience. The gyro plate came with a fresh tzatziki sauce that tasted like it was made from scratch that morning. The gyro was succulent, and the stuffed grape leaves my husband got as a side were the best we'd had anywhere. The roasted potatoes as his other side were crispy and spiced with garlic. My baked mussels were in a perfect garlic-forward, tomato sauce, which we enjoyed with the potatoes. Our server was kind enough to offer some fresh mint leaves, straight from her home garden, for my tea. We spotted the owner when we entered, ensuring that we received prompt service. We stopped in for dinner one night & was pleasantly surprised how romantic the inside was! We were expecting it to be more of a fast-food kind of place, I guess. The wine selection was extensive, so I asked the waiter for his recommendation for a red wine. He brought us a cab & a Malbec, which were both amazing! Then we ordered the eggplant rollatini which was also delicious. It was definitely a hearty dish & the flavors were spot on. I don't know how my husband ate it all because it was so filling! I was boring & just got a Greek salad, but it was equally yummy & was good sized. Yelp 2008-2022; still going strong and wanted to feature a local spot in Central Texas for my 1000th review. If you're a regular follower I just pushed Paula Deen and butter galore into the 999 slot. So, my hungry friends welcome to Acropolis in Harker Heights, Texas. We've been exploring the Killeen/HH/Temple/Belton food scene recently as one of our favorite car club couples lives in the area. Not exactly my turf but we're discovering this area has an uncanny amount of restaurant diversity. Houston being a similar destination where you can get just about any global cuisine you desire. Around Austin the Greek scene is hit or miss so it was time to find some flaming Kasseri and then order half the menu. I had forgotten how much I love this dish. Dump some high proof alcohol (usually a Greek Brandy or Ouzo) on it and light it up! Once the flames settle you're left with a delicate treat. Buddy always orders Calamari so that's the next dish that hit the table. Nice bites but I wished it was paired with a different sauce. Normally a delicate Aioli or even Marinara. I love Tzatziki but it doesn't have to come with 3/4 of the appetizers. Next up Dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves) which had a lovely filling and texture. Bring on the traditional Gyro for me! I love this dish, but don't really do lamb in other forms. The spit fired mixture of beef and lamb together tames the traditional gaminess of the meat. Paired with simple crispy potatoes it was a fine version and something I don't get to have very often. GF has been working on her roughage intake and the Greek Salad fit that bill nicely. I did steal an olive for good measure; miss eating those too. Buddy Mike had the full on taste of everything including two types of Spanakopita, Steak Souvlaki, Kofta, Gyro meat, Tiropita, and buttered rice.
