What a great place! We have been there a few times over the past couple of years and we have had a great meal each time! Our latest experience began when we walked through the front door. We were greeted by at least two staff members and seated immediately. The restaurant is clean and well lit. Neat things to look at on the walls. The menu is, in my opinion, the perfect size. Many dishes to choose from but not so many that it becomes confusing. My wife chose a waffle with bacon and eggs. It all looked so good and she really enjoyed it. I, on the other hand, chose the special of the day; Huevos Rancheros with chorizo. Oh my goodness!! It was EXCELLENT! Home-made by the chef. Let me tell you, he knows what the heck he is doing!! I savored every bite and enjoyed it very much! I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant! It looks relatively small from the outside but it is surprisingly large inside. Don't pass this one by! Very disappointed by the service today. My husband and I came in at 12 and were told the wait wouldn't be too long. We asked if we could sit at the bar, but were told they were understaffed and couldn't seat anyone there. No problem, we weren't in a rush, so we waited. After 40 minutes go by my husband goes up to check on what's going on because there is a guy sitting at the bar that came in after us already eating. When he asked why he was able to sit there, they said it's because he's a regular. Absolutely rude when we're also paying customers and have been waiting for 40 minutes. I checked out this place after multiple yelp reviews. Went big and ordered the chicken fried Benedict. It was SUPERB. Gravy was super flavorful. The biscuits were fluffy and fresh tasting. Acme is one of my go to breakfast spots in Salem. Recently went with my wife and brother in law. He had eggs Benedict on a house made biscuit and the eggs were perfect. Wife had the avocado toast with creole deviled eggs and I had the chicken fried steak - delicious. The staff is always friendly and the cooks are solid. I was FLOORED when asked to leave right after paying. That was really rude and I will not recommend this place. Food was fine, the waitress was great and was tipped well. What happen, is that right after paying, a few minutes later as my friend and I were finishing up our conversation, getting ready to leave, this guy comes to our table and asked if we paid, and if we can give up our table. A nicer way of telling us to leave. We just said yes we paid and left. We weren't able to finish our conversation, but as soon as we left the building my friend and I were in shock that we were asked us to leave. There wasn't even very many people waiting. Two at the table ordered the Deluxe Grilled Cheese Sandwich (Parmesan and Garlic Buttered Texas Toast, filled with Cheddar and Swiss cheeses / $8.50). They thought the proportion of bread to cheese was off -- too much bread -- and that it was too expensive for a grilled cheese sandwich. Where is the Deluxe? I had Don's Big Skillet** (bacon, ham, home fries, mushrooms, onions and peppers, topped with three scrambled eggs, Cheddar Cheese and sausage gravy, and wheat toast / $13.00). I found it delicious. The building itself is great, and our server was quick and efficient (Thank You, Deidra). One of the most interesting venues I've discovered in a long time. The decor is trendy and what with the deafening Muzak one would think it a magnet for a younger crowd, but nearly every patron I saw at lunch was a senior. This is not at all the atmosphere of senior favorites like OPH, but I'm strongly inclined to return---at early or odd hours, when the rooms might be quieter. They serve from the breakfast menu until 2:00. I had a half order of biscuits and (sausage) gravy and it was generous in portion, very competent, but the seasoning not distinctive. Personally, I wish chefs would experiment with a sausage with kick, like chorizo or Italian hot. Coffee is excellent, roasted by K&E in Portland to Acme's specifications. Good value by my lights. I have eaten at Acme since their inception and as I know their other restaurants in town, my expectations were high. I wasn't disappointed at first but as they've settled into their area, I think they've become a little less unique and therefore stunted in the growth and development of their menu. Food is good when they actually give you what you've paid for! Honestly Why would a person call to ask why is this not what I ordered and paid for. Then told by the cook or proprietor that they "hooked" it up with more food than was actually given and to top it off that we should be thankful for them giving me jalapeno pepper biscuits (which I would NEVER order due to dr.s orders). Then was spoken to rudely and was also taken back by how he said I'll see u next time and he'd make it extra special and that did not sound like a good thing. So know I have to throw it out worrying about it being tampered with oh and also I NEVER ONCE have ever ordered anything with Jalapenos! So disgusted with that place! As a previous employee. Both myself and my 15 yr old son were not supported. As we were both verbally and physically abused. There is an actual case pending trial. Tom berated and belittled my son over his "hair" because one day he didn't have his hat (someone stole it from out lockers) he continued to make my son feel less than worthy of working there if he wasn't willing to "chop his hair off" and called me a bad mom for not making him do it. My son showed up every day! Put his head down and worked and did his job. Never did a single thing wrong. All the wrong was in part by Tom and Jesse the owners of this "fine friendly establishment " They've never owned a restaurant before and it's obvious considering how they treat their employees. No support. Just judgment and shadow following of everyone that is there for them making them money to stay in business. We read the reviews and were hesitant about trying this place out. We did so anyways to judge for ourselves. Here are our thoughts: I read some reviews about portion sizes and honestly, if your goal is to eat 1 huge meal a day - Denny's might be a better fit for you. There's no point in coming in a place with a hungry feeling, paying money and leaving feeling so full you're sick. You come in with a negative feeling and you leave with a different negative feeling - pointless. We had the eggs benedict and dons skillet - both were portioned just right. We were full without feeling sick. Another topic that keeps coming up is prices. When 99% of the dishes are made from scratch, including the sausage that goes into the gravy, you can't expect to pay the same as a dish that has been assembled with pre-made sides and blasted in the microwave. If those kinds of things don't matter to you - yeah, I can see why you'd think it's spendy...but that's not the restaurants issue. That kind of approach to food is becoming more and more rare. I personally really appreciate that and believe that people should be paid for such effort. Our food was excellent. The gravy, eggs, ham, biscuits - everything on the plate was delicious. We both had clean, empty plates at the end of breakfast and didn't feel like we couldn't breathe. Definitely coming here again. Way to go guys! read more

I used to go here fairly regularly. I really wish the new owners success. It is a nice space. Unfortunately, lately, the food and service have been a disappointment. With my most recent visit on an early St. Paddy's day, I ordered one of the specials, a pastrami sandwich with an egg on top. It was a nice serving of meat but the driest pastrami I've ever been served. The side of potatoes was undercooked, soggy, and cold with flecks of wet onion that seemed to be steamed. Today my husband, daughter and I tried Acme Cafe. I was pleasantly happy with cafe. When you walk in you can enjoy a comfortable atmosphere w/ trendy style that's relaxed. I enjoy seeing a open kitchen I believe it gives the cooks a certain accountability to their customers. Breakfast is served all day on Sunday from 8:30-2:30pm. My husband is a big Eggs Benedict fan so he tried their classic one. I really liked the sauce had a nice fresh and tart flavor, best sauce we've had in Salem so far. My little cupcake tried the Sourdough pancakes and ate almost the entire pancake! I sampled it and was so impressed, best I've had in Salem and that's hard bc Orig.Pancake house and Busick Court are good! These pancakes are so light and have a nice slightly chewy texture I would expect in sourdough bread. I had their special premium steak hash w/ fresh jalapeños. The hash wasn't the prettiest I've seen but the flavor was nice spice and tender steak. I was concerned it was going to be tough bc of the way it looked. I've tried Word of Mouth and wasn't impressed enough to order it again. However acme cafe was a winner and I would order again. Acme cafe coffee was a 3 star coffee. Most breakfast places in Salem fail for coffee with the exception of Orig.Pancake house. I actually go their for their coffee. I was so excited about Acme Cafe coffee cups, my fav style. The coffee was good nice bold strong flavor. However I don't care for the bitter after taste not sure if it's their roast or if the coffee wasn't fresh. However it's 2nd best to me for Salem. Most places like Word of Mouth, Busick & HWY 22 have horrible coffee and I won't always get coffee. Here hwvr it's good and I would order again Service was fine nothing exceptional. I will say hwvr I was VERY surprised by the speed from when we placed our order to when we rcvd r food bc it was so busy. Defiantly worth 4 stars. The only complaint I have is with the prices. I think it's expensive. Coming back here from NY tip employees r paid less. So I've had to get use to OR tip employees being paid such a high wage therefore effecting the cost of food. I cook a lot myself therefore I'm always aware of quality, quantity vs price. I think the quantity of food vs price makes them expensive. Typically I've realized Salem offsets prices w/ more quantity however I felt portions here do not. It's not a portion you could split and paying $12 is a lot. At least at Busick Court portions are large and you could split. Acme Cafe not so much. So sadly this is not going to be a place I can go to more often then maybe once or twice a month. This my honest review after 4 recent visits within the last 2 months. The first time we had breakfast there we had the chicken and waffles and mimosas. The food was good, drinks were good but the server double charged us and we still haven't seen the reversed on our end. Second time we had the same thing and it was over cooked chicken and the waffles were cold. Third time was for lunch and the service was very slow. The food was ok, waters were not refilled and it took us asking another server for the check. During the lunch hour on a weekday this was surprising. The last time was this morning and We asked what the special was and the server told us the special was prime rib hash. So we split that. It was not good. The "gravy" (sauce?) was gritty, there were 8 tiny pieces of prime rib split between the two and were mainly fat and gristle and our eggs were undercooked. The server never came back to check on us, and when she seated the table next to us she told the woman that she only had one of the bacon Cinnamon roll pancakes left and wanted to let her know since she knew she liked them. Would have been nice to be told there were more specials than just the hash but instead she was "holding out" for a friend. The owner (?) came and got our half eaten plates after we sat there for a while clearly done. We asked him for our check. 4 minutes later the server showed up with our check, never once did anyone ask how our meal was. One more note to the ownership: the way you are cleaning your floor is a safety hazard. It is very slick. There are specific cleaners that should be used on vinyl plank and it feels like you are cleaning it with the same greasy mop from the kitchen. I slipped on my way out and I'd hate to see an older person fall in your restaurant. Salem is lacking quality breakfast restaurants. There's a market for it and this place has a lot of potential but it is clearly needing some improvements. read more
