My wife and I have been here three times now for breakfast. The food is great, far better than most of the local standards. The "chicken gravy chicken" dish is just wonderful. Agree with others, that the pricing seems just a bit high for the quantity received. Wait Service has been very inconsistent. There doesn't appear to be any standard in terms of performance, script or follow up, although the food has come quickly every time. The follow up on water, coffee or the bill has always been spotty so far. I'm no expert, but it seems the seating configuration needs to be looked at, in that the balance of tables, booths and bar spots just doesn't seem to accommodate the dining requirements, at least at breakfast. Well worth the try, and I hope it evolves into a consistent cafe choice. If I had a choice, I would give 3 1/2 stars, but it's not a 4 stare place yet IMHO. read more

Mediocre food. Very overpriced. We like to try new places when we are out and about so a few nights ago, I stopped in to see what it was like. It smelled delicious but was so full there was a 30-45 minute wait I was told. We returned today for lunch (Friday about 1:30pm). It was pretty busy and we waited for about 10 minutes for a booth. The first thing we notice was a small variety of items on the menu, and the pretty high prices for a lunch fare. We ordered and the food arrived fairly quick. I had a burger (there was at least a $1 additional charge if I wanted additional on it like cheese, $2 for bacon, etc.) nothing exciting about it, sure was not worth $11. I've had better at Five Guys for less. My boyfriend had their "Big Brown" which was nothing remotely "big", being 1 slice of bread, a little sliced turkey and 2 tomato slices smothered in gravy with a small side of potato salad. Also not even close to being worth $10, maybe $6...maybe. My daughter enjoyed the tomato soup in which she dipped her grilled cheese. ($9 or so.) Won't be going back. The prices just didn't fit with the quality or amount of the food. read more

Went there on a Thursday night without expecting much. Split a grilled cheese with house-made pastrami and grilled onions added. Wow. Came with steak & mushroom soup. I'm not even a soup guy but Holy Crap!!! Very good deserts, too. Incredible meal in a relaxed place with a truly friendly and helpful server (without any fake, sappy "perk"). We love this place for breakfast & lunch! We have not tried dinner as much. The breakfast selection is amazing & I love the variety of eggs benedict variations. My husband loves the breakfast sandwich and corned beef hash. The corned beef hash is unlike other places as it's real, not from a can and there is plenty of it. The service was absolutely outstanding. So friendly, warm, and inviting from the minute when we walked in to when we left. Our server was great friendly and had terrific suggestions. I couldn't decide between the burger or the chicken and chips. I had the chicken and chips. They were the best Chicken (strips) I have ever had. People there aren't a whole lot of other uniques restaurants in town like this (accept for their sister restaurants. Go you won't be disappointed. The ice cream is great and homemade!! read more

This place was amazing! I am a fan. The food and service was epic, you can tell the food was made fresh and came from fresh sources. I had the Shrimp Po'Boy (I am from the south - and it's a comfort food for me) It was awesome! Great flavor, and I they even substituted mac-n-cheese for me instead of fries since me and my dinner date got the fries as an appetizer. I will definitely go again. We are from out of town and was looking for a good breakfast stop. I phoned ahead of time to find out if we needed a reservation for a party of 6 she said it was only a 15 minute wait and put us on the list. They were able to seat us outside which was awesome. Our server was amazing, attentive and quick. Food was super delicious the only complaint was the fresh toast didn't have any cinnamon so it was a little bland. We arrived at 8:15am and waited in our car until the restaurant opened at 8:30am. Several people were rude and pushed their way in early. Even though we waited we were still the fourth table seated. Our server did not greet us or offer coffee. The table right next to us was seated 10 minutes after we arrived. Their server offered water and coffee within 5 minutes. At that point we realized that ACME is interested in image but not customer service. On the way out we told a server why we were leaving. Her answer, "I was gonna come over in a minute." Sorry ACME; your food is great but it won't prop up your sad service. read more

We came over to Word of Mouth because we couldn't get service. As a business owner you should be worried when people walk out because your wait staff is so bad. Is it so hard to bring over coffee and water? It would have kept us in our seats. But when you are the fourth top seated and they bring coffee service for three tops after you and don't even acknowledge your existence... that's pretty much a F### you. So we came somewhere where maybe we have to wait, but at least they value their clientele. Based on yelp reviews we're eagerly awaiting the next restaurant that opens up at ACME's location. read more

We have eaten here enough that the staff recognizes us and greets us by name. However there are some things that others should know. The temperature varies greatly throughout the building with the warmest being around the kitchen area. Weather permitting the outside area is nice but can be a little crowded. The food lacks consistency in taste and appearance. On some occasions the meal might be good but ... The breakfast is generally consistently good but so are most breakfasts anywhere. The fish is not of the highest quality and the seasonings are haphazard: sometimes OK but generally too much. Overall some customers are going to be all over the board in their ratings. As this is an over-rated restaurant although we may continue to have a breakfast here now and then, we are going to have our other meals elsewhere. read more

Although the food was good, we thought the portions were a bit stingy (3 half biscuits with a full order of biscuits & gravy) and the prices were a bit high for an average breakfast. Also a couple was seated very close to us which felt a little too close for comfort and then when they asked if they could have my coffee creamer, it made me uncomfortable. Especially since no one waited on them for a very long time and the customer got up himself to get his own water and coffee. The servers all watched him, but no one said anything! He asked a passing waitress if he had to also cook his own breakfast and she laughed it off as a joke, but no one would come serve this poor couple! We went there for breakfast last Sunday. The portions are small for the price paid (comparable to other breakfast places in Salem). The food seemed like something I could have easily made at home--and I'm not the best cook. The atmosphere was ok and most everything tasted ok. I had the chicken fried chicken and liked the batter on the chicken and the potatoes. I ordered poached eggs and specifically asked our server (Kim) that the whites be solid and the yolk to be runny. That translated to the kitchen cooking everything solidly through. Seemed to defeat the point of poached eggs. Kim did a good job serving us and answering questions, so I do give credit where it's due. Maybe our hopes were too high for this new place, especially because the owners come from Wild Pear, a place I adore. I would like to try dinner sometime to see if it's better (I heard they have Mac n cheese--one of my faves), but honestly I'm not dying to come back. read more

I heard it was a great place. There was a wait which is something to expect with a good place to eat. We oredered coffee while we waited. Coffee never came. Our group of 3 got seated with a 20mn wait. Which is fine no big deal. We sat and waited, menus closed, for 20 min. No waitress, no water, no coffee. Very unprofessional. We had been looking forward to coming in since Acme opened up, and finally had the opportunity to do so. We arrived just a few minutes after opening, and were warmly greeted by the host, who sat us and took our beverage order. When he arrived back with our drinks, he let us know who our server was going to be and left us with the menus. After just a couple minutes we had decided on what we were going to be ordering, so we put our menus down and waited... and waited... and waited... We were the only table in the restaurant, and in view of the kitchen, the front desk, and the bar area. I would say that between the hosts, cooks, servers, possibly an owner, and other staff, there were at least 7 people working, and we were in full view of all of them (as well as made eye contact with most). About 15 minutes after putting our menus down, we were offered refills for our coffee. After another 15 minutes without anyone else coming by or even acknowledging us we decided that it was just time to go. Had it been busy, or understaffed, or we were hidden in a dark corner and just kind of forgotten about, we would be a lot more understanding. However, it was none of these things. Other than the young man who seated us, and the young lady who refilled our coffee (both were very nice), we were entirely ignored by the rest of the staff. We had incredibly high hopes for Acme Cafe, but after the way things went this morning, we will never go back nor recommend them to anyone. read more

Stopped by for lunch. Ordered one of the day's specials - spicy rockfish fish tacos. Although tasty, the amount of fish on each of the two tacos was pretty paltry especially for $14. Would not order again as it just wasn't a good value. The service was poor. The server was slow and inattentive. She seemed more interested in talking with her co-workers than responding promptly to simple requests like silverware for the table after the food had arrived, or even bothering to see if an iced tea needed a refill (would have been nice given the $3 cost). This locally owned restaurant could be so much better with an improved focus on customer service and giving more value for the prices charged. read more

Me and my husband went for dinner last night. I got the Ribeye special, my husband the pastrami sandwich, and we split the snowball for desert. All was amazing! Steak cooked perfectly, sandwich was delicious, and coffee ice-cream with candied almonds was amazing. We don't go out often but we're happy we tried this place out! I love it here because the food is great. Been here several times and I have done take out and the food is always yummy. The ice cream they make is exceptional and everyone should try it. The things I don't dig is the seating. Some of it is truly awkward like the table at the end of the tall table. We got put there last time and it just feels like you are in the way. I am a people watcher and I noticed the staff didn't seem to like each other. One gal just stood there while the dishwasher was trying to get around her. No excuse me, nothing. Usually when staff act that way it totally turns me off but the food is great so I will just sit at the awkward table and watch the show.. read more

The waitress was very friendly and did come by to check on us after we received our food but took two reminders for my friend's decaf. coffee. I just want to echo the reviews here. Went for lunch today with friends. First visit, although our friends had been there before and really like it. The food was very good (four stars), and you could tell most was made from scratch (not frozen or out of a box). Service was just fine, and they were very busy. However the comments here on the price to portion comparison are spot on. The portions are on the smaller side compared to most restaurants, but I think most restaurants over serve and I did not walk away hungry. However, when you are dropping $12-14 for a burger, fish and chips or a sandwich, I am expecting a large enough portion that I could likely share with someone. I will certainly go back, but unless the lunch prices drop down to the average $5-$8 mark, it wont be for lunch on a regular basis. read more

Great food but the atmosphere was a little lacking in ambiance. It was super loud for dinner and the tables on either side of us were basically on top of us. I had to strain to hear my date who was no more than 2 ft away. Surprised at the lack of local Oregon wines on the wine list. That said the food was great and I would get takeout anytime. read more

Two of us arrived for lunch on a Thursday about 2pm. There were perhaps 4 groups of two in the diner. The place, in part has bench seats on one side and tables/benchseat combo on the other. The initial worker sat us between two couples and most of the restaurant was bare. Why seat people on top of each other?? Our elbows could had touched easily with the patrons on either side of us. We asked if we could move (didn't like to be crowded) to a bench seat, no problem. I wondered why would they seat us in such a tight locations with all of the bench seating that was bare at 2 in the afternoon? Looking at the menu, we both initially agreed there were limited choices on the menu and at this point we were wishing we were dining elsewhere. Even Wendy's! I had an $11 hamburger (burger +9, cheese +1, mushrooms +1. The burger arrived in a basket and the meat was near the thickness of a quarter. I mean it was THIN! The bun was dry, the burger wasn't really very good, but the fries were. I asked for water to go with my glass of beer and there suddenly must be an ice cube shortage. I was delivered a warm glass of water with no ice cubes. Lunch special ($12.50), + one burger, + soda, + one beer totaled $31.50 and then the tip on top. By this time the couple we were initially seated by was done making out and left. An expensive lunch with limited choices, average to fair lunch and warm water. The service was OK and the place was clean. Overall impression of the Acme, we won't return. There are many better places to drop $40 for lunch for two! Start with 3 stars, -1 for poor seating, -1 for lack of cold water, paper thin hamburger, limited menu items and expensive, average to fair food. I'll give +1 only because I don't think the place deserves one star, but certainly not more than 2. read more

Disappointing. I have been here three times and will not be returning. Each time the service has been lack luster but today's experience was the worst by far. It was clear the staff was ready to end their day ( with an hour and a half left until closing ) and treated us poorly as well as others who came in for a table. Darien, our server basically ignored everything we said to him and had a bad attitude throughout our entire meal. The breakfast is okay but I would much rather go to original pancake house where the food is 100 times better as well as the service. read more

The menu is just about the perfect size: enough variety to keep it interesting, but small enough that you know every dish is honed to perfection. My first time here after reading reviews from yelp. I've been really wanting to try the breakfast and they only serve breakfast on the weekends. Well after 3 or so months, I finally had the chance to try it! Omg! So good! I'm sick and tired of hasbrowns from Denneys and IHOP. $2 worth of fish for $14 each. Husband and I both ordered the fish and chips. Child sized portions. And I am child sized! I got 3 thumb sized fish pieces. Husband got 4. The fish did not taste fresh and the batter was too salty. The slaw was bland and bitter. Had not intended to finish fries but was only thing really to eat. Still left hungry. read more
