Disclaimer: I had formerly left a great review for this place because of the helpfulness of the staff, namely Aidan and Greg, but feel obliged to update it in light of what turned out to happen as a result of the advice I was given here. Went in to buy a knife, specifically for whittling. Showed an example of the old knife I was using, have been using for around 20 years, but wanted to pass it on to my nephew and get myself a new one. Was advised that a small kershaw would be a good choice, and I paid a tidy sum (a bit over $100, after tax) for the pleasure. The very next day, the tip broke off. I went back in and it was suggested to me that the tip/profile of the knife was too narrow to be durable for whittling, especially when performing concave cuts into the wood. This was, unfortunately, something I had overlooked, having assigned in my mend a tremendous credibility to the staff who had helped me around my original purchase. I was then told that knife sales were final, and that warranty or repairs would have to go directly through the manufacturer, a process that is unhelpfully unrealistic for me because I do not have a stable mailing address and, frankly, would rather just spend my time whittling with my old knife. I just told them to keep it. Suffice it to say that I'm tremendously disappointed to have made my gregariousness and trust in expert testimony to cloud my judgment and allow myself be swindled into buying a $100 folder less fit for the task than my ~$19 gerber from the Clinton administration. Below is the old review, preserved for posterity. Excuse the fantastical grammar; I was feeling rather passionate about my positive experience when I drafted it originally. I will say that Aidan in the lumber section is still steadfast and reliable in his advice and skill in cutting fresh pine for me to whittle with. Buy wood here, but be skeptical of buying anything pricey; ESPECIALLY from a brand you've never worked with in the past. OLD REVIEW: At this very store exists a man named Greg. He's got a beard that could go toe to toe with Father Christmas himself, and a knowledge of knives that puts to shame any "master" you may find in the world of men. They would all kneel to Greg. His name might actually be Craig, actually; I could have misheard him. I'm not sure. But he's from Alaska, and you can see in his eyes wisdom that could've only been gained through a lifetime of rugged survival in such a wild, unforgiving land. He taught me how to sharpen my knife, gave me a good recommendation for a knife worth caring for in the first place, told me how to test the sharpness, and did so with an enthusiasm and passion matched only by his extensive knowledge and clear clarity of soul. So I tell you, traveler: should you ever need to slice an onion, carve a wooden block, or just have a cool knife you can show off to your nephews so they will think you are cool, make your pilgrimage to this place. Find Greg (maybe Craig. But pretty sure it's Greg?) and you will be put right on the path of enlightenment! read more

I love shopping local, EXCEPT when the local retailer refuses to honor their own coupon AND demands to charge ***THREE TIMES*** what the big box stores are charging for the exact same thing. I needed so steer manure for my gardening. So i called this Ace hardware to make sure they had some in stock before I drove 14 miles to the location. A female answered the phone and told me "Yes, we have it". So I drive there to get a bag. I get there and after a few minutes of looking I couldnt find it. I found two women employees with masks standing in an aisle chatting with each other and asked them. After a few minutes one returned and told me they didnt have steer manure in the store. Thanks again Ace. I guess someones' wasted gas and time means nothing to you. Who hires these clueless employees? If you tell a caller you have a product and you really dont, thats pretty bad for business, but in this absurd masked up world where customers really dont matter at all i guess youll simply make your profits off others that dont mind when you waste their time. Every time I go here the place is clean and the employees are helpful If you have any issues or cannot find something just ask one of the employees and they are always willing to help. The do have a lot of things to help you around the house as well as a small lumber section. Oh, and let's not for get the train that goes around the store above your head. Our kids love to follow it around while we are shopping. When we check out the kids always get a free bag of popcorn. read more

Everyone is always cheerful and pleasant when I come in and goes out of their way to help find things/figure out what I need for a project. It's small, but they have all the necessary things, along with some cool odds and ends. I broke a doorknob once, and it would have required a whole new kit just to replace one part. They have a supply of kits that have parts missing etc. so they were able to find me just the part I needed and simply gave it to me. I will be forever a loyal customer. Plus, free popcorn, old school sodas to buy, and even cute chicks to play with in certain seasons. AND a local food truck outside for most lunch/dinner shifts. What's not to like? read more

Pros: Staff, Staff, Staff Cons: Price, selection I used to routinely patronize the big orange and blue box companies for my hardware needs. This particular day, I was in a hurry and needed a few parts in a hurry, so decided to stop at this ACE store. It was a welcoming surprise. The staff was readily available to help out and not in a pushy way. I spoke to the member and told him what I was working on and he became my advisor on my project. I received great advice and recommendation. Because I was able to purchase exactly what I needed the cost was overall low as oppose to buying in bulk. I will be back often. read more

This place is what it means to be a one-stop shop: not only an excellent hardware store, but practically a Home Depot, Target, and Walgreens all in one! Unlike many Ace Hardware's I've been to this one seems to have operated on an almost European-sense of shelf space by literally packing as many different types, brands, and variations of household product you could need. Could only imagine how vast their inventory list must be. And while you study your way through a selection of grill tools, coffee cups, camping equipment, screwdrivers and air filters, your attention is unexpectedly, amusingly directed to the choo-choo sounds of a model train that travels along a track suspended from the ceiling. While you just might get lost navigating the aisles the staff I found to be very friendly and attentive and are quick in helping you find what you're looking for as well as offer advice on your purchase. Strangely they also have an amazing selection of craft sodas and root beers that I haven't found in any other beverage store! It's not often you find a great hardware store that's worth avoiding the Home Depots and Lowe's for but unless you're looking for high-end equipment, or high volume landscaping materials on the east-side this place will probably have what you're looking for and if they don't they'll find you something even better you've never considered. read more

Returned when I had more time to shop, and was even more impressed at their selection, prices, and so many helpful and kind employees. (Sadly, I'm too used to the opposite. Hands-down the best customer service, ANYWHERE, in Tucson!! Whether I'm looking for something specific, or if I only have a vague idea what I need, the friendly people in red vests always steer me in the right direction. They're particularly good at spotting that expression of overwhelming cluelessness and DIY panic, pointing you in the right direction without making you feel silly. For example, I lost a teeny screw for my sewing machine, and since it was MIA I had no idea what size/shape/etc. I needed. The aisle of screws/bolts/fasteners is HUGE, with hundreds of drawers of parts that kindasorta look the same to my untrained eye. Find an employee, though, and they'll figure it out. "Short? Fat? Straight slot or plus-sign? Flat or rounded top? Hmm, probably one of these, do any of these look like the right size? They're eight cents each, let's get you several and you can figure out which one works." I get home, and the first one I pull out of the envelope works perfectly. MAGIC I TELL YOU! So thanks, Ace people, you are amazing-- far better than the people at the big-box shop! read more

This isn't just a store..it's a problem solving DIY team that will save you big bucks. As a landlord, I constantly encounter things I don't know, but seldom find this store's staff doesn't know exactly how to help me fix it. From technical HVAC fixes to plumbing..they are beyond amazing. My favorite gem is Herb in the paint shop..he truly knows coatings and has never disappointed! This is the closest hardware type store to my home in Vail, AZ but it is not my first choice by any means. The older gentleman who had to make my key for me, (that was not his normal duty, I guess?) seemed put out and even more so when another woman came up and asked for a key to be made. Because of his attitude, I will avoid him in the future. Several other employees were very helpful about a confusing price issue on product. Ace is too high on prices! I purchased one item there for $4.49 and found the exact same item just up the street at Walmart for $2.88. I prefer to go someplace else. read more

These folks have always had what I need and are always willing to assist with questions...and provide some better ideas. Although Ace does not have the large selection of Home Depot or Lowes, I prefer this store over the big box stores. The service provided and the convenient location is worth the higher price and the smaller selection. This weekend, not only did the staff escort me to the cabinet hardware, he actually helped me select the best hardware for my design and recommended a plastic template they stick for ensuring the holes are drilled correctly on every cabinet. read more
