This place is a hidden gem, we tried a cheese pastry, and it was piping hot, and fresh. The pastry was crispy and flaky. And the cheese was soft and lightly sweet. I am definitely coming back here, the owner is super kind, I can eat ten of these easily. They have so many different variety of pastries and they make fresh bread. The baking at Absolute looks amazing! Check out my recent photo. I think I went too late in the day though, so I was underwhelmed with some of the savoury pastries I bought. I asked for a beef patty and a couple other items like a pastry roll with chicken and veg inside, I suppose something like a samosa without the spice. Since I was hungry I ate them cold. Maybe they would have tasted better if I would have heated them up, or showed up earlier and bought when they were fresher. Since it's nearby, I will return and go early and grab a croissant and give that a go. Could give a quiche a try too. Maybe I will do a blind taste test with one of Daniel et Daniel's creations from around the corner, hmmm? Easily one of the best bakeries I've visited in Toronto. My only disappointment is that I hadn't visited this place when I actually lived in Toronto! You have a wide selection of baked goods including challahs, turnovers, different types of croissants, danishes, and filed rotis. We got the spinach and feta croissant, cream cheese danish, and almond croissant. All were superb! My friend and I went in and he asked for 3 of one thing and 2 of another. No prices listed anywhere. She says $20. He paid and just as we're about to walk out he looks in the bag. There's only 4 pastries in there. So he said: I asked for three. She automatically got argumentative and confrontational and says no you didn't. He asked to see the receipt and she says there's no receipt. Then a man comes from the back who had not been present and starts yelling at us saying: no you didn't say that. Good old fashioned bakery. No dainty French macaroons here, just big flakey crunchy juicy apple turnovers and danishes, pies, tarts, meringue, eclairs, challah, poppyseed rugelach! Mmmmm. The vegetable pastries. And their fleshy counterpart, the chicken pastry. STUFFED with big chunks of chicken....they're wonderful. Far less spiced than the veg (for shame ; ) but really good. Wow. They are goooooooood. Also, sweet pastries are really good here. Butterfly shaped flakey's remind me of my favourite pastires from decades ago when I was a kid and bakeries were everywhere. A good bakery is harder to find than it would appear. The Absolute Bakery & Cafe is a very good find though! Before finding this place I would pick up buns at T.O. Fine Foods, and other breads at No Frills or Loblaws. Now I don't mind taking the extra few minute journey to get fresh bread that they always seem to have in abundance. Sometimes you have to wait in line for a little bit (the longest I have waited is probably 10 minutes), but it is well worth the wait. The selection of breads and other baked goods the carry is extraordinary for such a small shop. I have never been able to come up with a bread they didn't have, and I have asked for some pretty weird things when I am in that kind of mood. Everything that I have purchased from them has been fresh and very tasty. Not only would I recommend them to everyone in the area, but I will probably be in line right behind you! read more

I am admittedly a bit obsessed with finding the best bakeries in the neighbourhoods in which I live, and it's no secret that this is THE spot in Cabbagetown. The challah is incredible! But I have a recent addiction to their croissants, which are gigantic and flaky and probably the direct cause of my pandemic weight gain. I'm looking forward to trying their cakes, which can be made to order. They also have delicious savoury lunch pastries l. Everything is made fresh daily, though I've noted that they also sell day olds if you're on a budget. I Have been a BIG FAN of Absolute Bakery and buy weekly, especially ham quiches, and cakes. I buy the cakes for our seniors' group, birthdays, just last year the cake was for my own birthday and this wonderful CAKE, was an absolute dream. Taste, ingredients, nothing artificial--just right for our old tummies! While I'm waiting to enter the shop, I say to those outside passing along the sidewalk, that they should stop a moment and have something fantastic to take home. In jest I say that the only caution is that once you've had a confection, you MUST return for more! I could say more, but at 83-now, I'm going to have a pudding! Oh, I see the rating is "Great." I'm a croissant fanatic so I can tell you this bakery makes real croissants! Croissants cannot taste like bread. This croissant is crispy, light, flaky and crunchy. So yummy! Taste is still a personal preference but this may even beat the top ones like cherry bomb (my taste) and so far this is it in the East. read more

I discovered this bakery a couple of months ago by accident. I've since been here three times. The pastries are made fresh everyday and they are not small so prepared to be full after eating a couple. A must get whenever I'm here is the chicken roti. It may not look like the traditional west indie rotis you're used to. I call them mini rotis. They don't look like much but they're flavourful and one is enough to satisfy your hunger. read more

Absolute is absolutely (HAHA!) a great place. As some reviewers before have pointed out, it is a totally unassuming place from the outside and you could easily miss it in the row of other businesses, but once you're in there, there's plenty of things to focus on. I have tried a variety of goodies from them and everything has been delicious. Their bread is tasty (and cheap!), and they have some good cakes. Additionally, I really enjoy their rotis, which although a tad too spicy for my taste, are super flavourful and filling. Their croissants are excellent, although they are not your standard croissants, as they use a completely different kind of dough. Not flaky at all, but delicious nonetheless. They go really well with coffee. And again, there is no way of emphasising how cheap this place is - it's a total steal. I haven't used my card there recently, but they used to have a 25c charge for using debit, so do bring cash! In regards to the service: super friendly, super nice. I live locally and this place is a gem. Discovered it when my husband and I first moved into the area three years ago, and we've been in love ever since. Incredibly good value for money, friendly service, and of course delicious baked goods. I should note that the goods themselves aren't conventional (the croissants are not 'true' French-style croissants, for example) but so long as you aren't expecting them to be traditional, you won't be disappointed. We still haven't tried everything, but our favourites are the chocolate croissants (if you enjoy a pain au chocolat you'll enjoy these), the chocolate rum balls, the fruit danishes, and the meringues. If you can wait, take your croissants home and zap them in the microwave for 10 seconds for the optimum experience! read more

But even in the dead of winter I love walking over to Absolute Bakery, and buying a white loaf (2 bucks) or a loaf of egg bread (3 dollars). Seriously, the egg bread is the bomb, sweeet, but not too sweet. Still can use it on a sandwich without it taking over. Also, they have tons of different kids of awesome croissants and other baked goods. It takes serious will power to resist because it always smells so delicious! I am reading everyone's reviews, and maybe I just had a bad experience. I went to this bakery a couple of weeks ago to buy brioche. The lady at the counter gave me chala. I asked if this was chala or brioche. She said that they are the same thing. No they are not the same. I explained to her the difference, and she told me "whatever." She then walked away. That should have told me to leave the store because they obviously don't want my business. Another lady came to serve me, and I decided to get the chala because I needed bread, and I didn't want to walk to St. Lawrence Market. I also purchased some rolls on the back counter--Indian flavoured rolls...they were $4 each, and they were not very good. They were greasy, the meat did not taste very good, and it was soggy. I couldn't eat it, and I had to throw it away. The bread was also stale. It was not flaky or eggy like a good chala bread. I get better service and quality at the Loblaws at Maple Leaf Gardens. I don't get attitude, and the bread is fresher. read more

We've been coming to this bakery for years. Mostly for their egg bread - you will devour it fast! But we usually pick up a couple cinnamon twists or danishes while we are there, which are also quite good. And if we are hungry, a chicken or beef roti to eat on the way home! Never had a bad thing from here. I'm writing this review today specifically because I am so thankful that a) they were open Thanksgiving Monday, and b) that the woman highly recommended I get their Berry custard pie, as she said it was one of her favourites. Based on the reviews, I expected to love this little bakery in Cabbagetown, so I bought a variety of items to take home and everything left me disappointed. The reviews for the Danish was what lured me in at first, and I guess it all comes down to what type of Danish you like. These were very thick and bread like, which some might like, but we prefer light and flaky (Hansen's, MonK, Nakamura, even Sobeys are flakier) so these were a major disappointment. The Sri Lankan savoury pastries were interesting, and likely popular with those who grew up with this style of Roti and samosa, but it didn't leave us wanting more. The eclair was very stale. :( Saving the best for last - the twisted ring pastry was flaky pastry twisted with jam and coated in almonds. It was nice and crispy, and not too sweet, but again, not so great that it will inspire another visit. It took me months to even remember that I stopped in here, and notice I had never done a review. Perhaps if I lived around the corner in Cabbagetown, I would love this bakery the way the other reviewers do. Sometimes I think Cabbagetownies just love everything in Cabbagetown. read more

I'm so sad that we only got two items from this place - if those two items are a representation of the quality of the other baked goodies, this place is phenomenal. First of all, you are invited into the bakery by just looking at the baked goodies in the window. Everything is massive, and looks decadent and amazing. We ended up getting a chocolate pastry and a palmier. The chocolate pastry was AMAZING. It had loads of chocolate inside and out, and was buttery and moist. SO GOOD. The palmier was average, but it was practically the size of my face! And both cost about $3 together. This isn't your fancy bakery, but a bakery to indulge and come for big portions. Had a couple of hours to spare after work today and so thought I would check this bakery in Cabbagetown out. It's quite easy to find and there was a spot almost right out front. They have a wide variety of baked goods (I wouldn't consider them a café so to speak definitely a bakery). I ordered a loaf of bread and finally decided on a poppyseed Danish which was delicious and sweet. Price point was reasonable coming to a total of $4.50 for the two items. Service was fast and attentive and they were happy to provide recommendations. They lost a star as I was expecting a wider selection but what they make seems to be above par quality. I wouldn't go out of my way to go to this place but if I was in the area I would return. read more

Quick assessment: absolutely yummy. We had the apple turnover and the cherry cheese Danish. I'd have liked more cherry but most likely more people like it the way it was made. It was very fresh and the very nice lady at the counter went to the back for one of the freshest apple turnovers-- which was made with fresh apples and a pastry layer that melted in your mouth without that slick nasty after sensation in your mouth like what you get from bakeries that use cheaper ingredients. Definitely 5 stars. Low prices, but really great bread and pastry with quality ingredients. They have roti and other savoury things at the back, but I only stick to their pastry. So, so good. Especially if it still warm....Then it just melts in your mouth. Not a cafe, as there is nowhere to sit. Also, if it were not for the 4 star yelp rating, I would not have set foot in the place, as it looks a little, well, ghetto and dated. But one bite into their warm pastry, and I knew this was a darn good bakery. read more

I meant to take a pic but I was too excited I just wanted to eat it. They bake the most beautiful cinnamon croissants. A beautiful split between a croissant and Cinnabon without raisins. I was lucky enough to get one that just came out of the oven. $1.25 ... Def coming back for more. They also have some beautiful meat filled rotis , beautiful challah (egg) bread for French toast. Found out that they have another location in the Cabbagetown area...Parliament and Wellesley... Stopped by there today and bought a large blueberry, cherry and raspberry custard pie.... mmmmmm it was delicieux..... I went to absolute bakery today, and bought 3, croissants. I was eating one of them on my way home, and I found a bug baked into the croissant. It looked like a very small cockroach. My boyfriend bought it back to show them. He was hoping to get a refund, or for them to acknowledge they have an insect infestation. Instead they denied it, yelled at him, and claimed that he put the bug there. Why on earth would he put an insect into a croissant for a 3 dollar refund. This place seems really unsanitary if they take being told there are bugs in their food, by being rude, aggressive, and defensive. This place needs to have a health inspection! read more
