A RIP OFF - In times when everyone is struggling to make ends meet and people are convincing eachother to be patriotic and support small businesses, these businesses are taking advantage of the sentiments of the people. My experience upto a year ago has been good as prices, though expensive but still affordable. In the last 10 months or so, taking cues from Trump Tariffs, the ownership decided why not we be a part of Rip-Off...they jaced up prices of some items 3 times. I give one example: a packet of 5 bums was $4.99 Suddenly increased to $5.99 Suddenly increased to $6.49 And since this is not sufficient they put a surcharge of 1.78% on use of credit card to promote more cash transactions to cheat CRA. Wheat prices have not increased Gas prices have gone down Govt support for small businesses have increased Patriotic feelings of Canada 1st is on top The worst thing No Govt organization is there to monitor these things. The cashier shamelessly said that customers are still buying things....kudos to those customers who try to save 10cents at pumps but are giving away donations to this bakery. My family and people that I can preach are definitely are going to bi-cott these places. RIP THE RIP-OFF read more

In Durham region, generally, there is a dearth of European bakeries, and Nova Era fills an important niche. Most of the clientele appears to be take-out customers, but there is certainly a contingent of sit-down patrons who enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry. I am of the former persuasion, visiting to order the excellent custard tarts (the crust on these is beautifully crisp and flaky), and the Portuguese sourdough bread rolls. My in-laws have a tradition of eating Portuguese sweet bread at festive occasions. They are unable to get out much, so I can just pop by Nova Era to supply them with excellent, moist sweetbread. I also love the cornbread, especially toasted or sliced thinly for grilled cheese. I have not tried the bagels, but they are HUGE!! If you want to sit down for a cup of coffee, Nova Era has a small seating area, with a fun, Portuguese football themed vibe. I have always found the service to be friendly, helpful and welcoming, and parking is plentiful. If you are looking for good bread in Pickering or Ajax, just nip up to Taunton Road to satisfy that craving. read more

Nomnom ! The Pastel De Nada ( Portuguese egg tart) are to die for ! We got two with Nutella filling and two just regular Portuguese egg tarts! The Nutella tarts were so rich and divine.. honestly tasted like heaven with the Nutella melting in my mouth ! The regular tarts were good but more plain . I loved loved the crispy shell on both ! We also got a slice of tiramisu! It was good but could be better if there was more sponge cake in it ! Good for people who like rich cream though - most of it was heavy cream ! I came into the bakery this morning and I wear hijab. I stood there for 7 minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge me and ask me what I would like and called out twice to get their attention. At first I assumed the staff was busy but then a man pointed out to a female staff that I was standing there, she looked me square in the eye and then her face changed and she had a scowl on her face and walked by me like I was a wall and refused to serve me. I looked back in her direction and the entire time she wouldn't look at or acknowledge me. I left to take my business elsewhere. I'm secure in my faith and I don't get affected when these micro aggressions happen, but I wanted to let my experience be known for those like me who wouldn't want to be treated this way. read more

You HAVE to try their Portuguese egg tarts or natas. After a great big dinner I was bugged to grab dessert. Sat in on a weekday evening. The bakery has tables for seating and a pastry display that basically smiles at you the moment you walk in. 2 ladies helped me select what treat to grab. Portuguese nata - baked rich, sweet custard in a crispy, flaky, equally yummy shell. The absolute best I have had. Mum said it was a little on the sweet side for her, I agree only in so much that 1 is enough to satisfy your sweet tooth. $1.30 each Nutella nata - this I didn't expect. Ordered on a whim because... Nutella. Same as the regular nata but Nutella filled and drizzled. If you want your kid to shut up, get them this. They will be the quietest you've ever heard them, savouring each chocolatey bite with hearts in their eyes. That's how reacted, at least. $1.75 each I will be back to try more! At a family gathering we stopped in to pick up dessert along the way in Ajax. I didn't go in so can only comment on the take out items in the store. Nova Era is a European bakery that specialises more towards Portuguese desserts with several locations across the GTA. We had several items including custard pudding, almond tarts and of course traditional Portuguese eggs tarts. They were all very good, on the sweeter side but not too sweet where you would go into a diabetic coma:). The shell of the egg tarts were crispy and flaky which contrasted well with the soft egg custard filling. No wonder why they are the most popular item in Portuguese desserts! Overall a very good option especially considering there's not a lot of specialty bakeries in the Durham region. Will definitely come again if we are in the area. read more

Apparently Nova Era has been around Toronto for quite some time. This new location was recently established in North Ajax, and its about time! In the one hour that I was there on a rainy Saturday afternoon, this place was constantly visited by patrons. When I arrived I was greeted by a friendly lady who was very attentive and polite throughout our entire visit. Needless to say the service was amazing. I quickly settled on the Chicken BLT ( nova style), it was very good. I also tasted the canoli..yum. This place bakes a variety of fresh breads daily and people just come in to buy the bread, grab some tasty pastries and leave. Mind you, there is place to sit and have a quick bite if you so choose. I would have given it 4 stars but I feel like the staff hate their jobs and everything about their lives. I don't think I have seen anybody smile ever and i feel like I am an inconvenience when I walk in. When I ask questions about any item I get short answers and attitude. Most of their products are quite tasty which is what keeps me coming back. However, if I find a bakery that has equally tasty treats and nicer staff, I likely won't be back. read more

This bakery is kind of expensive but their pastries are really great. I love the egg tarts but the cannolis are what get me, I am a big fan of cannolis and this is my favourite spot to get them. Their stuff is sweeter than other places but not too bad that you can't eat it all. Would definitely recommend this place. read more

Waiting at cash to order a sandwich today and another customer enters who speaks Portuguese (from Johnson Controls according to his work van) big welcome, hand shakes all around then they serve him first and leave me standing there. Rude on their part and the customers for not saying anything. Will not return. read more

Hit and miss but mostly hit. Seems to be a popular place for sandwiches and such but I've never had that. I've had the breads and pastries and the breads are always good. The pastries though are hit and miss. The Nata's are amazing... always great. Had a napoleon once and it was quite good.. went back a few weeks later and it was filled with chocolate instead of custard. Then a week or so I was in there picking up a few things and my creme horn had a hunk of lettuce in it. That's put me off the place a bit. read more

Came here specifically to order some tiramisu and some donuts which are delicious but the service is sooooo slow. Was standing there waiting to order for a good 5 minutes without anyone acknowledging me. There was a person cashing out and another person making some drinks. No acknowledgment to tell me I'll be right there, so I decided to leave. To be honest, if I'm standing there for more than a few minutes and yet anyone saying hi to me doesn't deserve my business. I love the fact it's a family own business and I truly support family businesses but I highly doubt I'll be returning unless I'm super desperate in need of sweets and everything else is closed. Great little Portuguese bakery, nice to have one here since we came from downtown and hey were everywhere. The breads are always good and the desserts are so so so GOOD! A bit on the too sweet side but that's what dessert's all about. The only downside is the service. It's a hit or miss.....there's a couple of young girls that work the counter that seem unhappy when they work. But at least the baked goods make up for it. read more

Ordered a plain white cake with custard filling and cream cheese. my wife wanted to put custom decoration on top for my son's Bday. all I wanted a smooth top! .. easy right? nope! I went to pickup the cake, the cake was not made even, dome shape! The cream cheese frosting was so thin I can see the cake thru. and looked like it was frosted with a shoe! not even.. looked like a beginner frosted it. the manager was nice, he agreed with me it was sloppy done. but couldn't help since he said the cakes come from head office. they tried to smooth the topping but there was not possible since it was thin.. What is up with all the grumpy faces? Every time im in there, its bland attitudes as if im inconveniencing them to get me a simply pastry. No one has ever smiled at me and ive been coming there to get treats for at least 2 years. Finally today i decided to write a review to not only inform the customer but to let the staff know that perhaps a smile and a welcoming attitude would make their business even better. Bread is always soft and fresh, and Portuguese cheese selection is great. My hubby and I even stayed once for lunch, and thought the steak and pork sandwiches were delicious.
