I dined here for dinner last Saturday with some friends. First off, I absolutely love the decor! It has a modern upscale look but doesn't have the stuffy feeling that many traditional steakhouses have. The marble tables are so beautiful and add such a nice touch to the place. The restaurant is located on the first floor of hotel Julian. It is on the smaller side but it didn't feel too crowded. We ordered the marinated hanger steak, the dry aged t-bone, and the dry aged ribeye. For sides, we got the Brussel sprouts, French fries, and the mushrooms. We also ordered four of their cocktails. The cocktails were so delicious and unique. There was one called "Saturday Morning Cartoons" which included Cereal infused milk. One thing that stood out to me is that they have breakfast available even during dinner service which is awesome! Next time I come, I will definitely try some of their breakfast options. The marinated hanger steak was good but not what I thought it would be. When I think of marinated, something that is flavorful. However, when I asked our server what the steak was marinated in, he said salt and pepper. However, I did get a side of the red wine sauce (for Additional $2) which made the dish. The steak was cooked to perfect temp and was at a fair price point. Both the T-bone and the ribeye was so delicious, tender, and hit the spot for a good steak. Next time, I would love to try the beef Wellington. No sides are included when ordering the steak which is typical for steakhouses. However, I strongly recommend the sides. The mushrooms were honestly the best I've ever had. They were buttery, flavorful and had so much texture. The French fries were medium thick but perfectly crispy and well seasoned. My least favorite were the Brussels sprouts. They could've been more crispy and flavorful but nevertheless, it was a decent choice. For dessert, we did both the coconut panna cotta and the flourless chocolate cake. I LOVED both! The panna cotta was more gelatinous than traditional panna cotta but the subtle creamy coconut flavor was phenomenal. The flourless chocolate cake came with a fresh whipped cream that really cut the deep flavor of the chocolate, it was perfectly balanced. I can't wait to come back!! read more

Top notch team really went out of their way to provide us with amazing food and service. We were able to eat a couple of meals here during our visit. Dinner was excellent. We caught the tail end of happy hour and thought that the deal on the Merlot was exceptional. I enjoyed the cut of Beef Wellington that I had. The mushroom duxelle, prosciutto, puff pastry, mashers and red wine sauce were amazing. The steak cooked to perfection. I jumped on a side bernaise sauce and it was magical. Wife loved her chopped salad but kept reaching over her plate to get samples of the Wellington. Lil one had a nice ALK burger and fries. I kept dipping her fries in the bernaise sauce. Our waiter Ben (who was awesome) sent out a piece of the house made flour-less chocolate cake with whipped cream. Delightful. Place was hopping at Happy Hour. Great bargain. We popped in a couple of days later for the brunch. I ordered the Wellington with two poached eggs and relived the glory of the evening meal we had. Wife had a very good oatmeal. Lil one had the Super French Toast. I sampled the goodness and recommend two thumbs up. Staff was super friendly and stopped to chat. Amanda was always stopping over to check on us. On our last evening we came in from the cold after a few hours of touring around Millennium Park and enjoyed a few glasses of wine. We inquired about hot chocolate and the team went out of their way to send someone out the door to get the ingredients for a truly sensuous home made hot chocolate. Thanks again to Amanda and the team for going above and beyond our expectations. We are grateful for spending time with such caring folks! read more

This place is pretty good. Stopped in here for a business lunch and it was less than half full, which was a good thing. We all ordered different things around the table and each were pleased. The french onion soup was a hit. Also, the steak tartar would be worth coming back for. The steak salad was pretty good too. The service here is the real winner, they were so attentive and fantastic. Pretty good place. read more

My new favorite lunch spot! The food is oustanding! I had the Salmon avocado toast on pumpernickel and was in heaven. Every ingredient was very high quality. Truly one of the best things I have ever eaten. My husband had the lobster role and, while packed with more lobster than filling which you find in most lobster sandwiches here in Chicago, he felt it was a tad bit on the small size for the price they charge. We will definitely be back and l look forward to trying their other offerings. read more

I came here for lunch today with a colleague and it was a pleasant experience. We were seated right away by the hostess. We were greeted by our server promptly. Overall, the service was great. However, the food was okay. I had their Beef Wellington and my friend had the burger. We ate our food and we were okay with it. We also shared the chocolate cake which was a little dry - maybe it was because it's flourless but it tasted like a day old brownie. I'll try it again ordering something different. I always give every place I go to second chances. read more

Beef wellington was everything I could have hoped for. Service was great! And the bread pudding with ice cream was amazing!!!!! I loved it and second time here!:) read more

Expensive, mediocre, ordinary food. My dinner was half cold, but I just ate it to get out of this place quicker.

This review pertains to Restaurant Week and not the typical menu. When choosing the restaurant, we looked over the menu as well as the prices to determine if this was a good value for restaurant week. Seeing steak, as well as some other tasty sounding options, we thought this would be a good choice. However, I left disappointed. The steak tartare was good, very basic. The hanger steak was no great deal as I'd thought. Was a minimalistic approach with just some mashed potatoes under the small steak. A little disappointed, but I guess I could have known this since the menu did say only potatoes included. Where I REALLY felt cheated was the dessert. The flourless chocolate cake was more or less a Little Debbie's Brownie, if not smaller. Although everything TASTED fine, I didn't think the prices were justified for the amount of food. I actually went to get second dinner after this meal because I was still hungry. read more

This is a 3 star that is nearing the 2-star land. Look at my ratings distributions, I usually like to give a place a higher grade! Atmosphere alone gives a full star- 2 star food. We make a reservation for Saturday brunch, it was not needed. We walk in, wait at the hostess stand for maybe 2 minutes before someone from the back comes jogging up to show us a table- what would be our server. She was great. A man standing behind the bar face-deep in his phone looked at us a few times, but never came to help. Anyway- water comes, coffee comes. Fine. We order: my wife orders the ALK breakfast with Bacon, I got the Pimento cheese breakfast sandwich. Hers was generic and boring for $14. My problem, the bacon had the texture, taste, and cookery of pre-made microwave bacon- it was literally paper thin. For a meat place this is embarrassing and degrading. My sandwich was fine- the cheese made the whole thing. Unremarkable. The potatoes were room temp and over cooked. I paid the $40 whatever it was for both of us to have a breakfast and coffee and we got out of there. Maybe dinner crowd is better. Maybe. Its a good vibe and location, but everything else missed the mark. I can't get over that :15 second 'nuked' bacon. read more

This place is my new obsession. We sat at the bar and Johnny was our bartender. He's now my absolute favorite bartender in the city. He was funny, friendly, and could answer all my random questions about the menu and the drink list. The menu is the perfect size - not too big, but not so small it feels lacking. The burger, Brussels sprouts, fries, and hasselback potatoes are amazing. The potatoes have a sour cream and chive mix on top that complimented the potatoes perfectly. They're crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. The best part: they have outlets at the bar! Chill, drink, and charge your phone. read more

Newly opened and working some service kinks out, but the food was heavenly. Burrata and Tomato, Brussels, Filet, Ribeye and Gnocchi were all immensely enjoyed. The cocktail menu was pretty well balanced, but needing some more gin selections. Ivy our waitress was super attentive and friendly. Vibe is modern, hip hotel. If you don't eat, I'd still drop by for a cocktail. read more

I really wanted to love ALK! The reviews were great, food looked amazing online, menu was tempting and the venue was beautiful. We arrived for our reservation and were told our table wasn't ready and invited to have a drink. The murder she wrote was delicious. At the 50 minute mark of no one saying anything about our table and being avoided, we got up to ask and were told the prior party was still at our table. We were seated 15 minutes later while two parties that came in later (one smaller and one larger) were seated immediately. We were sat and no one ever acknowledged the long wait. A "your drinks while waiting are on us for the long wait" would have been nice, but we didn't even get a simple sorry from the hostess or waiter. Our waiter barely spoke. Didn't say hello nor introduced himself. He dropped off menus and later asked if we had any questions. He just seemed overall annoyed to be there. Three of the four of us ordered off the restaurant week menu. Food took a while, but the three hot apps were delivered 10 minutes before my friend's salad. Again, no acknowledgement. The steak tartar and french onion soup were delicious. Our entrees came out quickly. The steak portions were small. I get it is restaurant week, but RPM gives you a much bigger portion for roughly the same price. I've had better steak. My friend ordered the Wellington and liked it. It was a good portion, but wasn't anything special. I tried it and agreed a mutual friend makes a much better one at home. Desserts arrived--chocolate cake and panna cota. They were both rich and delicious, but tiny portions. Halfway through our desserts the hostess passed by and asked how everything was. That was the first time anyone asked throughout the meal. Our waiter then came to our table and finally spoke by asking if we needed anything else. I get that for $36 you can't expect a full blown three course meal, but I'd rather have a substantial two course meal as opposed to a three course tasting. Despite the food not being great, what really made this a bad, one-star experience instead of a three or four was the service. I've never been at a restaurant where the staff just didn't care. Maybe it was the first day of Restaurant Week jitters? A part of me wants to go again on a regular day, but the staff really didn't give me any reason to try ALK again. read more

Steak was pretty good and the Brussels sprouts were very good. Service at bar lacking. I ordered beer and food at same time but bartender forgot to give me my beer. After a good 5+ minutes - and this is a small bar- I had to ask him for my beer. He apologized. Then I get my food and about halfway thru finishing my food my beer is empty and he never came over to ask if I wanted another. So I finished the meal with the water I was given. After I was done eating he asked if I wanted a refill...too late! But again food was pretty good read more

It's hard to say what's the star of this place. Ambiance, service and food are great! A perfect little gem. Lunch sandwiches under $14 (you can't find that at even any of the mediocre chains in the city). Veggie wrap, salad with chickpeas and steak sandwich were all delicious. Perfect portion sizes so you won't leave feeling stuffed if you want to finish your plate. Next time I'll be back for happy hour. read more

Myself and 2 friends chose this restaurant for dinner on 12/26/22 for dinner before going to see a show. We arrived around 5:45pm to a pretty empty restaurant, maybe two other tables were seated and about 3 or 4 folks sitting at the bar. The server, Ian, was quick to give us menus and take our order for drinks and food. The drinks took forever, we actually thought the food was going to arrive before the food. The 3 drinks (Negroni, whiskey on the rocks, and an Aperol spritz) were finally delivered about 4 minutes before our food (filet mignon(MR), ribeye sandwich and n Mac & cheese). The food had finally arrived and Ian is no where to be found if we needed anything. I saw that there was a blueberry aioli on the menu with the fries so I was hoping to ask for a side of it to taste with my fries. Ian seems to have disappeared to who knows where and we are basically 3/4 through our meal before he walks by our table and we asked him if we could have some of the aioli. Ian not once asks how anything is or if we'd like anything else or offers another drink, meanwhile, the busser is trying to clear our plates we are not done with and our empty glassware. We had to ask for the check and still not once have we been asked how any of our meal was. I think I'll skip this restaurant next time. read more

This is a quite and relaxed restaurant you can enjoy food and conversation at the same time. I loved beef Wellington as it is known for. The meat was tender, perfectly seasoned with the right crispiness. Brussel sprouts were amazing too. Yukon potatoes were just okay though but I think it is because everything else was beyond outstanding. Oh and try mushroom and french onion soup too. read more

It looks pretty and trendy from the outside. Inside, it's just alright. I could hardly hear the hostess. Friendly enough, but not so much. Our waitress was great and helpful. The menu alright, but nothing amazing or crazy. I had a burger which was filling. I guess if we were staying at the hotel it would be alright to eat at. It is very small inside and with our two kids I felt we were getting some evil stares. read more

I met a friend here for dinner and the food was amazing and so was the service. We had the sliders, fries and a glass of incredible moscato. I bragged about this to everyone at work including my CVP. I had to come out of Yelp retirement to write this review. We get to the hostess stand. She barely looks at us, nor does she say hello. We give her our reservation time. She takes us to our table and just walks away. She was completely rude. We take a look at the menu. Even though this place claims to be a steak place, there are very few steak items on the menu. They have an 8 oz. filet, steak frites, and a ribeye. No New York Strip? No Porterhouse? I could go on and on. The menu, in terms of steak options, is definitely lacking in a city that's full of quality steakhouses. The drinks were meh. We asked for a basic margarita. They messed that up. I had the Bandit of Hell's Band. That was average, at best. I had their version of a caesar salad, the poached chicken caesar. I never knew that it was possible to have a salad that was salty and dry at the same time, but the chefs at About Last Knife pulled that off with ease. That was the saltiest salad I've ever had, and the chicken was completely dry. I had the burger. It was about as good as a Burger King burger. She had the frites, and they were not just well done, but WELL done. I could barely chew that thing. The waitress, who was slow all night, brought us a dessert menu, after we waited 20 minutes for it, of course. The dessert menu only had 4 items on it (I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried). How do you have your customers wait 20 minutes fora dessert menu that only has four items? We went on a Saturday night, and it was half empty. I should've known that something was wrong when a restaurant in Chicago is half empty on a Saturday night. I read the Yelp reviews on this place, and I don't know how people gave this place anything higher than 2 stars. Lesson learned. We won't be coming back. read more

Absolutely do not recommend this place for restaurant week. Food was mediocre at best. It's $59 a person and for the 2 of us, they tacked on a 20% "service charge". Bill came out to $158. Not worth it one bit. read more

This restaurant might SEEM like a good place to eat, it's trendy looking, the menu is promising, and the staff are all beaming with perceived hospitality. But I would urge you to do business elsewhere. I've attempted to enjoy several meals here and every time I find myself disappointed by the service. I could write about the food having potential to draw larger crowds if not for the aloof manager and his inattentive staff, the repeated times I waited for a menu (or water), how the food comes out all at once even if you ask for them to serve appetizers before mains, but I'll just cut straight to the chase... On August 8th of 2019 the manager asked a pregnant guest of mine to leave the restaurant because she brought food in from outside - vegetarian tacos from nearby. We were a party of six. There were five other people ready to order and all of us were guests at the hotel. The manager was cold and unwavering in his declaration that ALK couldn't be liable if our pregnant co-worker got sick or choked on someone else's food while on their property. Watching his manicured beard squirm with excuses as we told him she was pregnant and had dietary restrictions was the final straw for me. If it was a newborn baby sitting there as our sixth guest, restricted to baby food, would you ask it to order off the ALK menu or leave? You are in the service industry ALK, we were guests of the hotel willing to spend several hundred dollars on dinner and drinks, and your manager's disgusting behavior caused us all to stand up and leave. The entire dinner party walked down the street to Cindy's where they were more than welcoming to our pregnant co-worker and her takeout food. I'd suggest you dine at Cindy's too, where the service is more than a facade. read more

What a great experience we had there tonight! Grilled Chicken with mashed potatoes, Farro Island Salmon, chicken sandwich- all yum yum yum! I had the custom cocktails -- outstanding boulevardier and lemon bourbon drink... and, the shishito peppers were outstanding! Not only great food, but great staff - loved Gigi - best service! I live in the Loop and had a dear friend coming to the city for a fun bday celebration. The restaurant is part of a hotel lobby and the ambiance is great. It's not a super huge place, but cozy. They have some couches and lounge area for people only have cocktails. I made a reservation for dinner and when the server approached us, we asked about the menu. The response was basically you get what is on the menu. Cool, got it. The wine list is very limited. We went with the Malbec since we were both looking for steak. We both ordered the Beef Wellington (both Medium) because that is what I was told they were known for and ordered some roasted mushrooms on the side. The food was presented in a reasonable time frame and was awesome! I noted in my reservation that it was a bday but there was no mention of it. We looked at the dessert menu and opted for a Bailey's and coffee. The reason for the 3 star recommendation was for the service. We felt we had to way down the server for anything we needed (including water service). I will return and sit at the bar to see how the service is from the bartenders. read more

I used to like this place because their steak is good and price reasonably. Now the price has gone up significantly, hanger steak was not available, beef Wellington no longer comes with mashed potato, and it's SO LOUD in the restaurant. I felt like I need to yell to be heard. When I just want to just pay and leave, the waitress didn't see me at all. I'm so done with this place. It literally made my day worse. I will not come back. read more

About Last Knife...more like About That "Happy Hour"??? The only thing offered during their happy hour was $7 glasses of certain Californian wines and certain selection of $5.00 draft beers. The "happy hour " DOES NOT include any food items, so if you're looking to fill your stomach while drinking, you'll have to pay the regular menu prices. I wanted to add this place to my after work spots, but it's a one and done. Also, the guy manager should seek employment elsewhere. For the few patrons that were there, he NEVER went up to any of us to ask how things were. It was as if he was scared and chose to ignore all of us. Pretty sad. read more

Stayed at this hotel and decided to stay in to eat dinner.. Expensive $$$$ and nothing to rave about . I had the cheeseburger which was one of the most economic items in the menu and it was ok. We also ordered the gnocchi it was a tiny portion ...fried pasta but, so small the waiter could not believe we were done by the time he returned back. They should put a warning label ...Petite portions no accompaniment !! They ate it in 3 seconds ..no salad no bread !! The water they serve is warm at room temp had to ask for ice repeatedly. Disappointed for such a good location! read more

Was walking down Michigan Ave heading home and looked to my right and saw this place. There were many smiling faces as I creepily looked through the glass, so I decided to stop in and grab some food. I had the beef Wellington which was cooked perfectly. Just the right amount. You have to get the hasselback potatoes and the French onion soup, too. Everything was done right here. Great vibe and nice crowd inside what I think is a new hotel called Hotel Julian or something. read more

Came here for dinner last week with a group of 12 from work and really enjoyed it. I had the prime rib sandwich, which was great. The cocktails were excellent. About half of our group ordered the wellington, which about half of those liked and the other half thought was too small and overcooked. The service was excellent. One member of our group was rude to our server, Ian, who handled the situation perfectly and professionally. I would eat here again. And just to note, if you can't treat servers with respect and civility, you're a bad person and shouldn't go out to eat. read more

This place just came up next door to our office building so our whole firm was excited to try it. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. A group of 8 of us came to the restaurant for my birthday lunch and were seated at their one big table, which has backless short stools in lieu of chairs, which was fine since they told us beforehand. Our waiter awkwardly came over to ask for our drink order and I ordered the Saturday Morning Cartoons, since it reminded me of Milk Bar in NYC. After about ten minutes, the waiter finally came back and told us that cocktail wasn't available. After another long while, he finally came back with our newly ordered drinks. Our waiter took our order, all the while emphasizing that sides (fries/chips) are not included and an additional up charge. Our food took forever to come and when it finally came, the waiter had forgotten one of our meals. When he realized one of us didn't have food, he didn't apologize. He was completely aloof and inattentive and never even came back to ask how our food was. When he finally brought my friend's sandwich to the table, he again failed to apologize and the sandwich bread was completely burned! I got the Beef Wellington slice and it really was just a small slice thrown on a plate with no sauce (that's an up charge too) and no sides. The flavor was ok but so dry. Definitely pay the $2 for the sauce. Overall, the food was lacking and service was snail's pace slow and rude despite not having many people there. The only decent part of the meal were the cocktails. Unfortunately none of our firm members will be coming back even though this is right next door. read more

You think you are a person, they only see dollar signs. I went here with my husband. The waitress messed up the order so my husband and I were served separately. My meal was hot and I had to eat it while my husband looked on. When they finally delivered his meal I was done and I watched him eat. We like to eat together, especially at restaurants. If this was a casual and cheap place it would have been totally fine but this place pretends (and pretends only) to be fancy. The waitress and manager apologized about ruining our meal but charged us in full for everything with no offer of anything to offset their mistake. They obviously do not care and their apology was completely hollow. It's all about the money for these guys. With so many great restaurants in this city there is absolutely no reason to go here ever. read more

Where to start? We stayed at Hotel Julien for 5 nights. Amanda is fantastic and I'm pretty sure the only one there who cares she has a job. Not even going to discuss the lunch I had their on Friday (yet plenty to say about it). Saturday night, we ordered room service. Menu says "breakfast all day every day". Nope. Not today. Had to relook at the menu and call back to order their veggie wrap and 16 oz ribeye medium rare. They said it'd be 10-15 minutes. Ten minutes later they call back to say the hummus wrap is also not available...just the dinner menu. Since hummus was on that menu (and in the veggie wrap), I asked if it was served with veggies or pita. I was told neither...just hummus. What??? So I order the tomato burrata salad. Food comes not as room service but in PLASTIC containers. We were served a $46 ribeye (medium NOT medium rare) in a plastic container with plastic silverware! The kicker is the tomato salad was THREE cherry tomatoes cut in half with a piece of burrata! Who serves that as a salad?! The only reason this restaurant gets two stars (instead of zero) is Amanda. She's awesome and tried to make it right by hand delivering herself a new salad and the hummus (which actually comes on toast). And she comped at least the salad. My opinion this place would be dead without Amanda. Which brings me back to the lunch when Amanda wasn't there. Sat at the bar and the lady was busy with paperwork for ten minutes before she took my drink order. Couldn't get me a margarita as the bartender (probably Amanda) didn't come on til 3. So I order the Rose. Ten minutes later the guy comes back and tells me they don't have Rose either. I will say the grilled cheese was really good as were the ten French fries it came with. Back to my original statement. Wouldn't ever go back unless Amanda was there serving us personally. read more
