It has taken me years to write this review...my father passed away January 2012. I'm hoping this "journal" will bring closure to my inappropriate experience with Abel Funeral Services. I live in California so I chose Abel based on the referral from the senior home my father was living in.
My father became acutely ill and I had to drive ten hours in the middle of the night to get to the hospital. After four days, I had to make the tough decision to end life support. Under the circumstances, I was in an exhausted daze. At this point I had never been through losing someone close to me, so, I needed guidance through the next steps. Concerned about how the identification process works, the nurse explained to me how the deceased are clearly "tagged" in their morgue while waiting for the family's chosen mortuary for pickup. My father passed late afternoon on a Sunday, so, my call to Abel's was late in the day, and not during business hours. So, I was concerned about reaching someone after hours. I did get a young lady on the phone! I was shocked and relieved to have a live person answer vs a voicemail! She explained my dad's body would be picked up that evening and so we arranged to meet the following Monday morning to make the cremation arrangements. At this point, I was pleased with her customer service........ But, this is where it went sideways.......
At about 10pm, I got a call back from her asking me if I was sure my dad passed at the hospital I told them because their driver was there and could not locate my dad's body! I was horrified....shocked.....worried.....and, frankly, quite pissed!! This was mistake #1. The way she spoke to me on the phone was like she was running an errand for me to pickup my dry cleaning and phoned me to be sure I had the right place! I assured her I had given her the right hospital information. I think I'd know, I spent four days there! I was so insulted! I know that wasn't her intention to come off insensitive, but, she was young and inexperienced. She should have known to demand that their driver look harder until they find the deceased family member. Even if that means she had to call every hospital in the area, You do not EVER make a phone call like this to the family! And, if the call needs to be made, it should be done by the seasoned, experienced owner. This is just laziness and unacceptable work ethic. Needless to say, I told her to phone me back once they " found" him. She called back a bit later to tell me they located his body. Although I was relieved, I was also nervous about their competence with the rest of my experience....
Our meeting the following morning wasn't much better. The gentleman we met with was young as well and didn't show much compassion or customer service skills. He seemed to go through the motions like a clerk at the grocery store. I told him at the beginning of our meeting that I had not been through this process before and asked him to explain how it works. He didn't explain anything. I ended up having to ask questions to fill in the blanks. That was exhausting! I asked him how long it would take to receive my dad's ashes. He said they require a signature from the hospital first which takes about 24 hours and then his body is cremated shortly after, so, I'd receive his remains in about a week. I was not able to stay in Phoenix that long, so, I arranged to have his remains mailed to me. Fast forward.....a week passed and I still had not received my dad's ashes. So, I phoned Abel's and asked to speak with the gentleman I met with. When he got on the phone with me, he said they still hadn't received the signature from the hospital. He casually said, "Hmmm, that's strange, we usually get that immediately. I don't know what happened. Let me look into it." Once again, I was horrified.....shocked....worried.....and, frankly, quite pissed! How does this happen!?! My dad's body was sitting in their refrigerator for a week, forgotten about, until I called to follow up! I asked him who I needed to call at the hospital to get the signature they required because clearly it wasn't getting handled. Also, this had become time sensitive because my fathers memorial was out of the country and I was leaving in a few days. So, I explained to him that he needed to get it handled and overnight his ashes to me. He told me it was going to cost me more to do that. I told him that he needed to pick up the cost since it was their oversight! Really!? Did I really need to ask for any of this? Shouldn't it had just been handled right from the beginning?! He obliged and I got his ashes the day before I left the country
In closing, I would never recommend Abel Funeral Service. I received no compassion, trust, confidence, customer service, and reassurance in their abilities. I hope my experience was/is incidental not the usual. It is very, very sad that this is my memory of the mortuary experience for my dad....just another number in their files. read more
