Resthaven Park Cemetery

Resthaven Park Cemetery

Friday Dec 19th, marked two years since my sister passed away. I went to this cemetery with my…read moredaughter to visit her grave--an already incredibly emotional and painful moment. As my daughter and I were getting into our car at approximately 5:45 p.m. to leave, a security truck pulled up beside us and shined a bright spotlight directly into our vehicle. I rolled my window down and was immediately yelled at and aggressively ordered to leave. When I asked why he was yelling, the guard claimed he "knew me," said I was "always here," and that I should know the rules. This was completely untrue--I had not been able to visit in months--but regardless, nothing justified his behavior. When I asked for his name, he refused and would only identify himself as "security." He continued yelling and told me to "get the hell out of here." As I attempted to leave, he backed his vehicle behind mine and turned his bright lights on, creating an intimidating and hostile situation while I was visibly emotional and crying in my car. At the gate, another security guard was present. When I asked what the hostility was about, he laughed. When I asked for their names, I was again told only "security." I paid $65,000 to lay my sister to rest here. I never imagined that visiting her grave--especially on the anniversary of her death--would result in being treated with aggression, humiliation, and a complete lack of compassion. I reached out to West Resthaven's General Manager, Chris Hopkins, to report what happened. While he said he was sorry, he minimized the situation by stating that security is necessary and that it may have just been an "off day" for them. I told him that I now feel afraid to return to visit my sister because I do not feel safe. His response was deeply disappointing. I am sharing this so other families are aware. Cemeteries should be places of peace, compassion, and respect for those who are grieving. Last night, this place was none of those things. This is not okay, and it is not a safe or appropriate environment for anyone mourning the loss of a loved one.

The only grave markers allowed were flush to the ground making it look peaceful and serene. It was the reason my parents selected Resthaven when they decided to pre-plan and pre-pay many years ago. My mothers philosophy was death does not discriminate, after death when all grave marker are basically the same, you don't know who lived a wealthy life and who lived poor. In death everyone is equal. Times have changed. Resthaven now allows large tombstones and benches. It's still a fairly decent cemetery and since Dignity took over they've made several upgrades to the landscaping and irrigation system but to me allowing various grave markers has taken away from the serenity. Anyway! My father recently passed away and since he had pre-planned the process with Resthaven was extremely easy. Amber and Dylan showed compassion and professionalism, and guided my siblings through the process. Amber was easy going and responded to emails quickly. The day of the service everything went as planned and stress free. We opted to use their after service reception option. It was affordable and the caterer they use had delicious food. Again everything went as planned. My husband and I actually are making an appointment to pre-plan our funerals.

While we already had a mortuary in mind, we had no idea which cemetery to use. I set up a bunch of meetings and planned visits within the days right after my mother had passed, and I was quite disappointed with most of those we visited. I experienced poor customer service, a cemetery that didn't see very well kept, an inconvenient place to visit or some other issue. When I came across Paradise Memorial Gardens, I was extremely pleased with how well they communicated, their excellent customer service, and the layout and ease of visiting the cemetery. I had reached out to Dan and quickly heard back from him. I had told him what exactly we were looking for in terms of a location, stone, and service, and he certainly rose to the occasion to ensure that we had the date and time of the funeral and later an unveiling. He explained the prices and answered many questions that my family members and I had asked. Dan was responsive whether we were connecting right before the funeral or in the months that followed when planning an unveiling. For such a stressful time, I was pleased to have someone we made a connection with to reach out to. The actual Paradise Memorial Gardens cemetery is laid out nicely. Instead of other cemeteries where stones are all sticking up out of the ground, many of the stones are flat on the ground where they blend in with the nature. My mother's stone is near a big tree, which provides some shade when I visit her in hotter months. There is a small lake where swans and Canadian geese like to roam. For an interesting story, ask the staff about the swans. There is also a heated and air-conditioned mausoleum onsite which I had been in only once when a friend passed away a number of years ago. There is plenty of parking on the side of the single street that circles the site. There are two entrances, one off of Shea Blvd and the other off 92nd Street. While I didn't use them, I heard good things about the Messinger Mortuaries, which is directly tied to the Paradise Memorial Gardens. I certainly encourage anyone looking for a cemetery (and possibly a mortuary) to check them out.

She was interred with her husband, Michael who passed in 2001. For the service we had at the mausoleum and the interment, Cat was also extremely helpful and kind. Yesterday, I called again to Candy to help us plan another interment for the untimely death of my brother-in-law, Jeffrey Jarko. Candy is kind and considerate and her compassion is welcomed to ease our family's needs. Please thank her for us. Sincerely Carl Gundersen
