I think the experience here depends heavily on which massage therapist you get because despite the positive reviews, mine was disappointing. The therapist seemed either uncertified or unfamiliar with basic muscle and body anatomy. She applied very little pressure, moved around sporadically instead of focusing on specific areas or knots, and her nails kept digging into my skin. I also asked her not to massage my scalp because I had just come from the salon, but she did anyway. The checkout was also uncomfortable. I was actively sending a Venmo tip while exiting when the front desk employee stopped me to check whether it had gone through or if I had sent it. read more

A hidden gem and great little local spot. I agree, no frills, but quality work and the owner is a lovely human. I have been going here consistently (2-4 times a month) for over two years for Thai style massage (stretching/walking/deep tissue), and have tried many of their therapists. They have consistently given me quality deep tissue massages (male and female therapists). I often come in with migraines, and very tight muscles (I'm a professional dancer), and the migraines are often gone by the end of the massage or day. I have tried many other places in town, and no other spot has consistently had great therapists that are so easy to book (I usually book same day 1-3 hours before). I tip well because I feel how much effort, and care they put in to their work. Thank you for cultivating a relaxed and wonderful place to heal complete with hardworking, talented, and knowledgeable therapists. I truly appreciate you guys! Every massage I've had has been fantastic. Many times I've just walked in and they accomodated me right away or within one time slice. The MTs always address all of my requests. Last time I had a male therapist for the first time there named "Tim" He was aMAZing. I can't handle too much pressure and he could read me perfectly, just enough and not too much. Today I scheduled a last-minute massage appointment for 4:30 PM with Naan. Normally I request Annie, but she is currently on vacation and often fully booked. I have only had Annie two to three times, but I really enjoyed her massages. However I usually just take whoever is available and I happened to ask for Naan. I usually come to Abbot Massage with my mom, as it's something we like to do together, but this time I came by myself for the first time. About 30 minutes into the massage, Naan asked me to turn over. As soon as I turned onto my back and she lifted the sheet, she began telling me--very abruptly--that this would be the last time she would ever massage me. She claimed that I had previously tipped her "$8" and said she would not massage me again. Although she did not yell, her tone was rude and confrontational. The timing also made the situation extremely uncomfortable because she chose to say this while I was lying exposed on the table. I was confused and tried to lift my head to understand what she was saying, but she pushed my head back down several times and told me she would finish the massage for today but that I should not request her again. After I was finally able to sit up and cover myself with the sheet, I told her that I had never tipped her $8. She insisted that I did and said she remembered me because I usually come with my mom, who always sees Em as her massage therapist. I repeated that I did not remember tipping her $8, but she continued insisting that I had and repeated that this would be the last time she would massage me. At that point, after being argued with, pushed back down on the table, and spoken to rudely, I told her I wanted to stop the massage. She then tried to stop me and told me it was okay, that she would finish the massage, and that we still had time left. By that point, I was already caught off guard and upset, so I decided to leave. I went to the front desk immediately and explained to the receptionist what had happened. I also explained that my mom and I are repeat customers and often visit together. The suggested tip range at the spa is $20-$30. My mom and I usually tip between $11-$13, which may be below the suggested range but is still a significant tip considering the cost of the massage itself. Tipping is a courtesy, not a requirement, and many people do not tip at all. Besides, we have had no issue in the past by the way we tip and have consistently gone back to the same massage therapists without any issue. I told the receptionist that I was willing to pay for the portion of the massage I received, but that I did not think it was fair to be charged the full amount since what I just experienced and I was only 30 mins into the massage. She apologized and said she did not know why Naan would say that and told me that I did not have to pay for my massage and that she would talk to her. It's unfortunate because it is difficult to find a decent massage place nearby, and my mom really likes this location. The owner, Em, as well as Annie and several other therapists like Tina and M, have always been kind and professional. However, after this experience, we will not be returning. If Naan truly remembered me and had an issue with a previous tip, she should have declined the appointment from the beginning rather than confronting me halfway through the massage and creating such an uncomfortable situation and trying to push me back down. Her behavior during the session was completely unprofessional and inappropriate. Not to mention why she would think I would want to continue with my massage after what just happened. If I actually did end up tipping her "$8" before, I can understand why I did after what I just experienced but if I really didn't like her massage, I would've definitely remembered not to ask for her again. I would've also asked for a refund or made a complaint about her last time and not have tipped her at all instead of tipping her $8. If you have Naan as your massage therapist, you better make sure you tip her well or else this will happen to you. read more

I am used to $180-$400 massages and I can honestly say on the basis of massage alone it was among the best massages I've ever had at a fraction of the price. Lisa was my massage therapist and she had really great pressure and technique. The private room was very clean and the music was relaxing. I've been getting massages consistently for over 10 years, and this was the worst one I've ever experienced. I paid and requested for a very firm deep tissue massage and it was quite the opposite. The touch was so light and did nothing for me. I had to state multiple times "please use harder and firmer pressure." Half the massage the sheet was over me with the lightest touch, almost like a back rub with pinches here and there. She also didn't evenly massage the areas I requested either- she massaged one of my arms but not the other. Do not recommend. Found this place on ClassPass and wanted to try this out as it was so close to my work. This was one of the worse massages I ever had! I had booked for a Swedish massage. The person who massaged me had no clue what she was doing. I told her to massage my shoulders and she was just dragging her fingers across instead of massaging. When I told her that she was not really massaging, she got a theragun and started using. I had to stop and tell her that I want a massage and not to use it. Then she went and got hotstones and started rubbing them across my back. Instead of being relaxed, I was just anxious through out not knowing what her next move will be. I wish I had spoken up when I was leaving, however I did not want to confront her and just paid $20 in tip and left! So bummed that the reviews were not true. read more

(Note: Entrance is off Washington but address is actually their back door on Abbot Kinney.) the decor fits perfectly for Venice. The facility is clean and looks to be completely refurbished. I had a massage with Pasana who I've seen at The Massage Place before. She did deep tissue with some stretching for me. I was very happy with the service. And even better $75 for a 90min if you pay with cash. Cheapest in the area currently from what I've seen. Andrew will match you with the right therapist. He asks all the relevant questions on the phone. I just happened to recognize Pasana (unique name) from previously. This has come to be one of my favorite massage spots nearby. It is inexpensive (relatively for the area), and how good it is for the price. I've always struggled finding a spot that does deep enough deep tissue. There are a few masseuses that are really solid and consistent! $65 for 60 minutes! In Abbott Kinney? All of the masseuses are Thai, so you know they're going to use SOLID deep pressure. If you ask, they'll go harder, which is refreshing (because sometimes they don't). Omg the new studio is suuuper nice!! My husband and I have been going to the OG Wilshire Massage and so excited that they opened Abbot! Love the vibes of the studio! When you book your appointment definitely tell Andrew what kind of massage you like and what your issues are first. He knows every therapists strengths and weaknesses and can make great suggestions as to who might be the best fit for you. I highly recommend Susan and Kate who are now working at both studios. Selfishly I hope it's just temporary since Wilshire is closer to home. Both these ladies are MUST tries if you have legit knots and tension you need rubbed out. Fair warning, their style isn't the zen barely touching your skin kind. They really get in there with their elbows and fingers with hard pressure. Kate even walks on you. I have been getting "deep tissue" massages for 10 years. I now know that's a lie. Tonight was my first ever real deep tissue massage and it changed my life.
