This review is based solely on the cost of repairs, which I am now finding out were way over market. Unfortunately, I am not a plumber, so do not know what a reasonable price is and needed the repairs done as I have house guests staying with me. I had a guest bathroom toilet that was wobbly, so called Abacus as I had used them a month or so ago when my HVAC drain was making a knocking noise. They were very nice and professional and prompt in providing service and it looks like the work was done in a professional manner. However, the pricing is a totally different story. I was told the flanges needed replaced on both upstairs toilets. The cost to pull the toilet, replace the flange and then reset the toilet was $471.00 per toilet for a total of $942.00 for both. I was charged another $117.00 to Replace the Flapper or Tank Ball and then another $345.00 for a Toilet Tank Rebuild Minor, which is described as Flapper, Float or Chain, Minor Part. I don't know the difference between these two charges, but maybe there is a legitimate reason for both. I was then charged $352.00 to do an AC condensate clean at lav, which is apparently something the prior plumber that Abacus sent to fix this a month ago failed to do per discussions with today's plumber. This was after I told him that the noise was still continuing, but not as loudly. Lastly, I was charged $71.00 per 64 oz. bottle of BioOne Drain Treatment (a total of $142.00 for two bottles) because my drains were slow draining. I just saw that Home Depot sells the same brand and size bottle for $13.99 per bottle. I hate feeling ripped off, but I still can't be sure if I was or not. However, most people I talked to after they left and most Google research on pricing also points to that. I thought the only fair thing to do was just to state the facts and list the prices. If you have an issue and need a plumber, I would just make sure you know what you are getting into, as I feel $2,073 to fix two toilets and unclog an HVAC drain was excessive. read more

My AC went out and I had called several companies trying to get a same day visit because it was really hot and my self and my 5 year old were home. They were the first to have an appointment for that day. $50 call charge was fine. My husband knew exactly what was wrong with it so we figured it wouldn't be too bad. The guy didn't even verify if our AC was under warranty before quoting us. Husband told him the AC was barely 3 years old so he quoted us again. Came back a few minutes later says oh the price went down a little then when we went to pay him the price went down a few more dollars. I called last Fri. to get an appt. ASAP, first available was Tues. between 1pm & 4pm. At 3:59pm they called and said it would be at least another hr. and the tech was really abrupt. Be very careful about calling these guys out from a clogged pipe. I called for the 123 any drain special, meaning $123 to unclog any drain...nope! They arrived and even though there are 2 clean-outs accessible from a raised structure, they claimed if they had to come inside the house to clean out it would cost more. So here is where the "bait and switch" happens, they advertise the drain special and throw this out about coming inside when nothing was disclosed when you schedule the 123 drain special...then start quoting you "maintenance packages" that vary in price up to $600. We found a receipt from when we had it cleaned from another company for $119 and showed the guy telling we will not need his service. Only good that came out is they didn't charge a service call. Called a different company, they ran the drain snake all the way to clean out and charged $150....Buyer beware of the "bait and Switch" this company tries to pull off.... read more

Horrible experience. Strike 1: They called me in the morning to confirm their 3-hr window for an HVAC inspection, then missed the window. Strike 2: At the end of the window, they called to tell me that they would be a couple of hours late, and that although they had initially waived the inspection fee, it would now be $395. Strike 3: They were also supposed to also send a plumber, but had accidentally booked that for 11 PM. It's rare to find a company so mismanaged that it racks up 3 strikes in a single visit. read more

They probably do excellent work, but this company's services are not for me. I had a outdoor water hose faucet that broke and made an appointment with them to come over and get an estimate for fix/repair. They made it real clear they wanted to charge me $49 as a "call out" fee. In other words, an estimate fee. The guy came over and I explained what was going on. He then proceeds to punch all the information in his little Ipad thing to calculate the estimate. Apparently they have these little ipads with program to calculate labor, time and materials. About 5 mins later he came up with $237! WTF? To replace a small outdoor water hose faucet? He then starts explaining some B.S. about "well if you had a membership with us you could save 15%." LOL I asked how much is a membership? He said $50 a year. I asked could he call his boss to see about a discount. He was talking with his boss on the phone for a few minutes then he came back and said, we can give you a $6 discount. LOL. I said sorry Charlie, you all charge way too much, and sent him on his way. I mean really. He couldn't even break it down into how much for labor and how much for a simple faucet fixture (about $7.50 @ Home Depot). He said "Well the program calculates it all". Service has deteriorated in last two years with inexperienced plumbers who arrive at home and then call in for advice. Charged $1400 to replace 3' section of copper pipe which took 5 hours. Plumber failed to drain system externally and flush hot water tanks before placing in service. Result was most faucet aerators totally plugged as well as single hot/cold water cartridges. Another plumber came out to fix problem. He was a novice and could not repair single hot/cold water cartridge. Committed to calling back with timing on replacing cartridge. He never called back. As a VIP customer, I just received a flyer indicating they will now be offering electrical repair. May be too much expansion at the expense of quality. read more

Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning & Electrical boasting of 24 Hour Service is a joke. We had a Hot Water Pipe burst in our ceiling at 7:00 PM last night and called then for immediate help and they told me that it would be $150.00 up front just to schedule the appointment and ONLY had one tech on call and he had just been dispatched to another call. So, to get the full picture as a panicked person...the hot water pipe burst causing hot water to flood our attic. Also, there were electrical wires getting wet everywhere and we did not know if this was going to cause an electrical fire. Then, the ceiling busted and water started flooding our house. Then, we were concerned as the Water Heater is Gas and if it ran out of hot water would it cause a fire. So, we basically had three emergencies going on at one time. When someone advertises that they have 24 Hour Service available, you would think that meant that you had more than one tech available. Due to the urgency of our call, we ended up doing something else and going a different direction. However, I will have a bad taste in my mouth the next time that I see the Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning & Electrical commercial boating of it's 24 Hour Service. And, I will be sure to NOT recommend them for future calls. read more

We were unsure our 14 year "builder-grade" unit was going to survive another Houston summer and we were right, it was "shy" a ton to adequately perform it's task! (Plus this unit isn't even manufactured anymore.) Les Karge came out promptly, was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We respect the fact that he didn't try to up sale us or call our old unit DOA....he gave us options to decide for ourselves. He answered all our questions about the various units from which to choose. My husband and I did research on all the various different units and manufacturers...we discovered that Lennox is the top performer, plus their 10 year warranty! Now ALL rooms in our home are comfortable and cool without needing the assistance of the ceiling fan on full blast. Abacus and Lennox are two names that speak for themselves because of their impeccable reputations. The bonus of our system is that it controls not only the cooling of our home but the humidity inside our home as well and can be controlled by our phone. (Hope my hubby doesn't change it on me....LoL) And an added bonus....it's quiet! (That's right....the unit can barely be heard, from the air intake inside the home to the fan on top of the unit outside!!!!!) Hey, that's how I shop...ALL appliances in our home must be QUIET! And our Lennox is very quiet! If there is a down side...it would be the need to deal with the stench of a new heater needing to be tested.....phew! LoL The entire team of Abacus were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and respectful of our home, from the customer service reps to the HVAC Tech (Les) to the crew that did the installation. We were glad to see all the workers in uniform and all the vans had Abacus on them...it's important to know WHO is in our home. Thank you, Abacus for keeping our COOL in the Houston heat! So I placed a call on Friday 10/28 and explained that I needed to replace a chandelier in my foyer. I was told that an electrician would be out later that day with a fully stocked truck and would be able to install it that day if I wanted it. So a really nice guy came out and looked at my ceiling and stated he did not have a ladder big enough, even though over the phone I told them that it was a chandelier in the foyer (18+ foot ceilings), and he would have to get one and come back. I asked him if he could do it that day and he stated that he could not. When he gave me a price quote, he stated it would cost over $800 for the chandelier and a smaller light. I told him that price was outrageous and that we would not be using him. I gave him his $50 for the service fee and sent him on his way. This morning, 10/31 two trucks showed up with 3 people. I explained that I never even made an appointment for them to come back and had explained on Friday to the guy that he was overpriced and I was not interested in their services. I have someone coming out this afternoon that quoted me less than half of what they were going to charge me. No thanks ABACUS!! Update: After writing this review, I was contacted by Gerald who sincerely apologized and stated he talked with his team about this issue. I use Abacus for AC/Heating, Plumbing and Electrical. Because I was using them so much I decided to sign up for the year membership which includes annual inspections and savings on repairs. They always answer the phone and can get you quickly scheduled which I really appreciate. I will say that the quality of technicians can swing drastically though - I wonder if they've stopped doing thorough checks? I had one electrician lose my switch cover screw I had just installed and tell me I didn't have it when he got there (I had literally just put it on the day before so knew 100% it was there). Minor frustration but not a big deal- he ended up finding it in his truck. I also had another guy who spoke very little English who came by to do my AC inspection - He checked in with Abacus that he had arrived and was doing work but was literally nowhere to be found - They even asked me if he was in my house!! I said "ummm no- there's only one way in and it's got a camera - he has not been here!" Turns out he was waiting down the street at the wrong house. Now he was a super sketch guy. Mentioned he was an engineer from Africa who had come here for work. Something didn't add up to me. But besides him, most other technicians have been great! Sometimes they can recommend expensive upgrades, which you don't have to do. But the good technicians can answer all your questions. I like them for the peace of mind and ease in scheduling. To me it's easier than going with a random individual from Thumbtack for a job. Houston can be overwhelming and lots of sketchy people out! I have found Abacus to be very reliable. read more

My mistake for not doing research on these guys ahead of time... called them to move a gas pipe behind my stove down a few feet and was quoted over $1100. Not to mention the $50 just for having him come out. I asked what went into that $1100 and was just told it's their standard pricing for such a service. Do yourself a favor and don't even bother calling in Abacus. You'll get an insanely high quote and if you decide to shop around, they'll walk out the door with $50. Update: I added a star because the technician did a good job, but they totally gouged on the price and push you really hard to sign up for their yearly service. read more

We contacted Abacus for estimates for HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical services and my complaint is how high the estimates were. We have a small home, under 800 sq.ft., 2 bedrooms, 1 bath that needed to be re-wired, needed a/c and heat, and needed to be plumbed. Now mind you the house is now considered a new home, since it had major repairs after Harvey meaning home has to be rewired and has no plumbing or HVAC services. The estimate to plumb the house with water, gas and sewer was $61,400.00. I couldn't believe this!!!! Heck, it was $5,800 just for the Tankless water heater. The electrical estimate was $13,759 at membership rate, $15,931 non-member rate. The HVAC for a Goodman 2 ton 14 seer gas system was $16,613 at regular rate and $13,237 for the membership rate. read more

The technician quoted me $260+ to unclog the AC drain. He made it sound like our roof is about to be flooded and he needs to cut the pipe to flush it off. I declined the service and he got upset. He said "You think you can claim this from your home insurance?", and he laughed. I poured Drain-O into the pipe and it was unclogged. read more

"No disaster relief! I called to schedule service with Abacus early this morning at 7:00 to get my generators checked and running before the hurricane/Tropical Storm. They said no problem, they had 1 opening left between 12-3. I said great and then waited patiently for the technician to arrive. I was notified around 1:30 that they might not get to me today. I expressed that I really needed the service and would wait all day. I spoke to them 2 additional times checking in to see the status and they told me they were working on it. At 4:45 my phone died, which is exactly the time they called. I returned the call 5:00 pm and I was told a technician was on the way. I also received an email and that stated a technician was on the way and would arrive in 1/2 an hour. At 5:45 I called to check again and the dispatcher told me that they canceled my appt and rerouted the tech to another appt. It seems that they could care less about fairness and serving their customers that scheduled appointments and waited all day for service. Extremely disappointed! read more

All of them were very professional and even wore booties over their shoes so as not to track anything around my home. If I could give negative stars, I would!!! Today will be the 4th day without A/C. Abacus told us someone will be out Friday to fix my A/C. That person never made it de to a medical emergency. I understand things like this are uncontrollable, but we are dying in this heat. Did they send someone else out....NO! We were then told we would have someone out on Saturday. They never showed up during the time slot, and when we called to check up, they told us he was not prepared to make the visit. Something about miscommunication. Now.....the A/C unit in question was installed a year ago, and had been running fine. So a month ago when we needed to replace our upstairs unit, we called Abacus. The upstairs is cooling fine, but since that install, the downstairs has failed and they are giving us the run around. Plus....upon inspection by the city inspectors, we have learns that they didn't finish the job on the new unit. The exhaust house is not connected, all the parts are laid out, but they did not finish. (See photos by the city inspector) I suppose we would realize the unfinished job once we die of carbon monoxide poisoning? And....still we wait. Not only have we called to have them come out, the City Inspector had also notified them of their incomplete job. But of course, they sure did collect our money. So here we are, my home's first floor feels like an inferno, the upstairs exhaust is slowly poisoning us and we are out thousands of dollars. read more

18 months ago I called Abacus to come look at a backed up waste line at my residence. One of their plumbers, Jimmy, responded and bid a bit over $200 to snake out the sewer line. He told me that the city would not do the job if the backup was on my property. He did the work, and the line immediately clogged up. I called the City (311) and within the hour I had a gigantic truck in my driveway. In 45 minutes they had the line cleared (it's clear to this day). I called Abacus to complain and told them that Jimmy gave me incorrect information about the city's responsibility to clearing the line (I believe his name was Alan). He promptly refunded my money and offered me an apology and told me that he would make sure Jimmy was better informed in the future. Fast forward to last night. The Big Freeze #2 in Houston. I had an exterior water pipe valve break during the freeze. I called Abacus (forgetting that they were less than exemplary last time). They scheduled me for the morning and showed up exactly in the window that they promised. Guess who was on the truck? Yep, Jimmy. I decided to get the bid anyway. I was already into the deal for the show up charge, right? Jimmy looked me in the eye and said $546. To replace a gate valve and 2' section of pipe with a union. When I asked him to break it down for me, he just said that it costs a lot of money to have people answering the phones and to provide nice trucks (Abacus' van is impressive!). When I asked for the breakdown, He quoted me $200+ for the valve. When he was finished, I told him that I see $30 in parts and 1.5 hours labor. He said that I could just do it myself. (seriously!) I asked him to come inside while I called the shop. This time I got Ron when I called. Ron listened patiently while I laid out my history with Jimmy, his company, and the bid. While I was talking, Jimmy said that he didn't need to be here if that's how I felt. I was firm, but not angry. Ron was extremely nice. Excellent diplomatic skills. Ron responded that their company had a bid book and that Jimmy should have showed me what the breakdown was. He apologized for Jimmy's failure to follow procedure. He went on to say--at great length--that they were not inexpensive, but that their skill and customer service merited their fees. I reminded him that with Jimmy leading the charge for their reputation they were 0 and 2 with me. They offered to send out another guy. While I waited, it occurred to me to call the contractor who was bidding work on my house. My contractor was here in 30 minutes, and did the job for $160.00. I called Abacus, and canceled their appointment. I give Abacus Plumbing, the BBB rep who issued their certificate, celebrity endorser Tom Tynan, AND Jimmy the plumber a 'no stars review'. If you call them, be prepared to pay top dollar. And hope that you don't get Jimmy. read more

The tech looked at the AC for about 10 min and said the repair was going to be $1,100 dollars. I explained my equipment was still under warranty and I had the part on its way. I have no complaints about the electricians that gave the bid and performed the work. They offered a good solution for the work I wanted done and were very professional when they were in my home. However, I am very unhappy with the company. Here are the things that will cause me to not use or recommend them in the future: 1) The work itself is very pricey and they tried to sell a "membership" which is only good for electrical (not plumbing or AC work). I decided to go with the company anyway because I was in a time crunch and trusted the electrician who came to do the bid. I asked that he be the one that return to do the work. 2) I took off work on the day the work was scheduled. Toward the very end of the appointment window, I received a call that the electrician was running late, but on his way. Some time later, the electrician himself called to say he was not prepared to do the work that day. I was a little irked, but he said he would come the next day at 2pm. I needed the work done, so i agreed that would be fine. 3) the next day, the company said he would not be available because he was on another job. They said they would send someone else. At this point, I getting pretty disappointed with the overall experience. I told them that I felt it was fair to ask for a free membership. After some back and forth with supervisors, they agreed. 4) When the electrician arrived, he said that I could not use the membership that day. Therefore, I would be charged full price. The member discount is 15%. He said he could not help me with figuring out price, but that I could call supervisor, who would have to call a manager. 5) The supervisor offered me 10% off. I said I wanted 15% (the member price) and that I did not want a membership for future work as I don't plan on having any other electrical work done). She recontacted the manager who said NO WAY... 10% off is the max and that I should feel lucky to get that as the original bid left off a bracing so I was already getting a deal. $700+ dollars for moving a wire that already has existing switch and ceiling holes to run it through is not a steal. The layers that I had to go through to request a discount based on a no-show and a different technician were ridiculous. The difference between what I was asking and what they were willing to give was 5%. The manager should be ashamed that he could not assign a 5% value to making a customer satisfied. This company is more about selling memberships and overpriced services than pleasing customers. read more

Very bad experience... I would not recommend Abacus. We called Abacus to take a look at our furnace. As part of the BAM HVAC membership we get two tuneups a year. First, the HVAC tech arrives late. After taking a look he goes directly to his van parked outside without saying a word to us. 15 minutes later he comes back with a piece of paper with quotes for a whole new system. I was told there was carbon monoxide leaking at a dangerous level and that there were no alternatives but to get a whole new furnace immediately. I told the tech I'd have to think about it before making a decision. I called another company to get a second opinion and was told that the condition of the furnace was fine. I was furious! I called Abacus to speak to management and demanded a refund. Still waiting for a refund. I'm tired of being taken advantage by repair companies. read more

I've tried this company twice. From my perspective, they're terrible. The first time, I needed to switch an outlet from 110 to 220 volts. The guy was on time and pretty friendly. After looking at my electrical box, he said he couldn't change the circuit and that I would need to replace the entire box. He said it was old and a fire hazard. He thought it would cost between $8,000 and $10,000. Really??? I've had no problems with that box. Other electricians I've spoken to said I don't need a new one. I had a plumbing problem on a Saturday night. I considered it bad enough to call Abacus for emergency service (which they advertise). I called at 8:00pm and was told I was next on the list. I called at 10:30 and was told "the guy is still tied up on the call". So, that tells me that their emergency service consists of one guy for a city of over 4 million. Not wanting to stay up all night, I tried to reschedule for Sunday morning and was told the next available appointment was a "regular call" from 8 to 11am on Monday. When I asked about someone for emergency service during the day on Sunday, I was told that emergency service starts at 6:00pm. I guess that means that if you have a problem any time during the day on Sunday, you have to wait until 6pm at the earliest. Maybe I missed something in their advertising, like "closed on Sunday". I've learned my lesson. The next time I see that Abacus lady's smiling face on TV, I'll just laugh. read more

Our kitchen sink would not drain. We heard their advertising and thought we would give them a try. Nice truck, well dressed plumber who started writing an estimate even before he looked underneath our sink!! He started off at close to $500.00 which included $129.00 to join club Abacus, and 1 gallon of their special drain cleaner. After we explained we have no interest in joining their club or buying any products he lowered the price to $383.95. He went to his truck, brought in his snake and spent 10 minutes and was done. Next he wanted to inspect our water heater. He said it was very old and will start leaking any day. We thanked him for his opinion and sent him on his way. In my opinion, they are very expensive and must be paid a commission. If you call them, expect a very hard sell of their Club Abacus, Products and unnecessary repairs. read more

I should have read the yelp reviews before paying $99 for the yearly AC service. They sent sales guy disguised as a technician. He showed a video of our unit in the attic with mold and moisture and we later discovered after my husband got home that the video was not from our house. Our unit does not have any moisture or mold problems. He also claimed that our downstairs unit was leaking, compressor fan was about to go out and would highly recommend that we replace the AC. He promptly sent us an estimated quote of almost $9,000. We called 2 other repair companies who confirmed that our unit was operating just fine. I called customer service about 4 times to cancel and request a refund. I was promised a call back. No one has called. Update July 2016: Updated to 2 stars. We had a sewer line back up and Abacus came out and cleared the line from inside the house outward $350.00, one month later same problem cleared from the outside clean out $ 350.00. 45 days later same problem but the problem is under the house the plumber tells me. Here comes the estimator in his shinny new truck, uniform, and clip board. After a conference with the plumber, estimator said they will dig a 40' trench under the house and replace the sewer line. Since I am a VALUED customer, normally $38,000, but for you $ 32,000, Yipes ! I had Allied foundation Specialists Inc. do a excellent job for $ 10,500. read more

I would put a negative star if there was such a thing. Abacus totally tried to rip us off. Said that they could not clean a/c coils and tried to charge us $6,000 for new coils. 3 other companies said they could clean the coils for around $250. read more
