Home Depot had a sign in the window reading something like "it's hot a/c service day of," I bit thinking Home Depot would not soil their reputation sending a bad company. A company called Abacus plumbing Air Conditioning & Electrical did call in a couple of hours. I explained the symptoms to their tech when he got there. He immediately said bad compressor. However I had him check the Capacitor & Contactor first. The contactor on the compressor side was faulty . Quote to replace the contactor ( retail price $20.00) was $470.00 plus $100.00 for a service check charge already paid (usually about $69.00). Not sure but it felt a whole lot like price gouging. I turned down the repair and went to johnstone supply purchased a contactor for $20.00 and installed it in 5 real time minutes. If I had not known a little about Air Conditioners a twenty dollar fix would have cost $570.00. I am going to report this to Home Depot hopefully they are not a party to this and stop referring them. read more

Professional plumber showed up in uniform. Wore little booties to keep my floors clean. Arrived within the window of the appointment. Gave us three options on a fix for our AC drain clog. And then spent the next 90 minutes fixing and double checking the fix and triple checking the fix to make sure the clog was gone and the leak stopped. I was very impressed that his truck came complete with everything he needed to fix my issue on the first trip. No running to the supply store or calling another plumber to bring him stuff. Like most folks we tried all the home remedies YouTube suggested! Then we gave up and called a company that advertised on the radio station where I work. I have done everything I can to stay away from the "chain/big boy" plumbers. They all seem to want nothing more than to sell me something, sign me up for their semi-annual inspection clubs and over charge me. Having said that, I called Abacus and got a plumber out in just 2 days...right after Harvey. It was not an emergency fix...so I can't speak on how fast they do those. But it was 2 days after Harvey hit! I left a message on their website on a Sunday morning not expecting to hear back from anyone for a while. Within an hour a lady called to hook me up. I got a text when the plumber was on his way - with his name and photo! No question that he was our guy when I answered the door. They charge a service fee of $50 to come out. That tells me they aren't there to "sell" me something but to actually fix the problem. They accept credit cards. I will call them again. read more

I recently decided to have my condo plumbing re-piped (old galvanized pipe replaced with PEX). I called one company who gave me an estimate for $6500 for the re-pipe. Sheetrock repair is extra, but I already need so much done that I'm going to have someone come do the whole house. Several years ago, I *almost* did the repipe after having a leak and got one or two quotes back then ($6000 - $8000 if i remember correctly). So, I assumed $6500 was in the ballpark and I liked the guy who came out to give the estimate, but I talked to a commercial plumber acquaintance who said "materials for that job are around $500 so the rest is just labor. $6500 seems a little high". Keep in mind the estimated work was for 2 people x 2 days so roughly speaking, we're talking $170/hr. which is fine, but I decided to get a second estimate anyway. I'm going to compare/contrast both below and you can decide for yourself: Other Company: Walks entire house looking at all fixtures and access points. Discusses plan (and alternatives) for getting PEX run and hooked up to fixtures while avoiding damaging anything other than drywall (I have slate tile halfway up one bathroom and a custom closet where you would normally want to access the shower fixtures). Abacus: Stands in my foyer and asks me about my fixtures (i.e. how many bathrooms, faucets, etc). Other Company: Goes up into attic to inspect water heater and input lines. Abacus: Stands in my foyer and asks me about my fixtures. Other Company: Knowledgeable, eager, professional. Abacus: Stands in my foyer and asks me about my fixtures. Other Company: 2 days (maybe 3) and $6500 estimate which I was able to negotiate down to $5500 Abacus: 4 days and $15,800 estimate (did I mention he just stood in my foyer and asked me about my fixtures?) I can only assume that Abacus gets enough people to say "yes" to exorbitant prices that it is worth their while. Otherwise, I have no idea how they are in business. Mind boggling. The other company is on the second day of work as I write this so I will give them a review shortly. At this point I expect it will be a five star review. read more

I'm changing my review from 5 stars to 1 star. (Skip to the bottom if you want the TL;DR) Initially I thought that Abacus was a trustworthy company. However, after multiple dealings with them arising from an AC coil replacement, I cannot recommend them. In May 2018, my 4 year old Lennox AC unit stopped working. Abacus assessed the problem as a cracked coil. I paid over $2500 to replace it. Over the course of the next 8 months, my house experienced abnormally high levels of humidity, to the point there was mildew growing around the vents. Abacus came out 3 separate times, I took time off of work, to meet them while they assessed the problem. On the first two occasions I was told that levels of 50-60% humidity are normal because "this is Houston." All 3 times Abacus came out, I was told that my AC needed a complete replacement, costing close to $20,000. Finally, fed up, I hired another AC company for a second opinion. I told them the history of the AC unit. It took them 5 minutes to locate the problem. You know what it was? There was no freon in my system. The second opinion AC tech informed me that 12 pounds of freon doesn't just disappear, it was probably leaking out for the 8 months that I was complaining about high humidity. When I called Abacus with the results, you know what they did? They immediately sent their "lead warranty technician" to rectify the situation. He explained that shortly after the coil was installed it must have cracked again. He had no explanation as to why 3 different Abacus technicians did NOT check if there was a freon leak. In summary, Abacus charged me $2,500 for a new coil which they most likely did not properly install. After 3 separate visits, they told me that I would need to pay $20,000 for a new AC system. Once I got a second opinion from another AC company, Abacus immediately stopped bullshitting me and replaced the coil. In the end, I paid $2,500 on an AC coil replacement that was improperly installed, was forced to listen to some conmen as to why I should pay them another $20,000, lost over 15 hours of work, and finally paid $100 for the second opinion and learned that Abacus was, at worst trying to scam me the entire time, and at best completely negligent by not checking the freon levels in my AC system. read more

Just had Abacus here to hydro shoot sewer line UNDER house. It worked and they didn't sell me on an unnecessary $8600 sewer line replacement in the MIDDLE of my yard (that didn't fix problem) like John Moore. Plumbing problems? Choose Abacus. They're honest and professional. Show up in company uniforms. Not scruffy street clothes with unshaven faces and shifty eyes. Abacus also didn't walk up my driveway, eyeball my fuse box and tell me that that model of fuse box was "notorious" for fires and did I "want a friend to come check it out?". By friend this dirt bag (Willie) meant a John Moore electrician. To recap; Abacus is an honest company with professional employees. John Moore is a dishonest company with scruffy shifty employees. My human's AC went out last night and they were very hot and cranky... It is June in Houston afterall. So my humans called Abacus at 6am in the morning. After a very polite phone interaction and a repair visit from John Canales with Abacus, the AC was back on and my humans then celebrated with an adult human beverage. My humans were very pleased with all work and the professionalism. John even helped reset the thermostat programs. Called to give me a quote for new a/c units. I took off, met them at the appointed time. Alan asked me allot of questions but kept having to call his manager about the job. As though he had no idea what he was doing. He asked me about my home, told him flooded with Harvey. He says he can't help me nor offer me an estimate because we flooded. A bad CenterPoint line caused a power surge that blew out some appliances and it was best to replace the breaker box. Glad did the work. He was polite, informative, and knew his stuff. His work was superior - the city inspector commented that whoever required and installed the box did a beautiful job. Glad was also so kind to ask to see what damage was done. He checked a number of fixtures and outlets for us. Several lights and outlets came on when he found the GFI and did a reset. We were very happy with Abacus, and I will ask for Vlad in the future. read more

I was out of town working, my wife called and told me the electric outlet plugs in out master bedroom was not working. She called Abacus A service man came out and told her our outside service box was outdated and had shorts in it so the box needed to be replaced quoted her over $1800.00. I told her to wait till I came back from Midland which was the next day. I went out to the service box and all it was was a tripped breaker. This UNPROFESSIONAL company tried to take advantage of someone that didnt know anything about electric service. Not to mention the so called professional service man did not even kick on the breaker just told some bullshit excuse to try to rip my wife off. My hot water heater crapped out Saturday. Called ABACUS. I thought they were coming to install a heater. Instead, they had a snake oil salesman come out to give me a quote this afternoon. His price for a tankless water heater was $22,000 !!! He would not give me a breakdown of the materials,, labor, etc. A replacement 40 gal tank heater was $3300. Again, no breakdown Went to Lowe's. Bought a top of the line AO Smith heater for $599. With new drain tub and plumbing connections is was about $670. Grabbed by son in law and his brother to help me get the damn thing in the attic. Paid them a couple of hundred for what amounted to 1 hr. work (not including the extra 45 minutes with me doing the hookup). I am a time and material kind of guy. I don't mind paying a good plumber $150-$200/hr, portal to portal. I am all for businesses making a profit. That's what keeps our economy working. But these guys are ridiculous. I am very satisfied with Abacus! I called them yesterday afternoon around 3pm to see if they could send someone over to clear out a kitchen clog that was also backing up into our master bathroom sink. The lady that took my request was friendly and stated that they could help the next day. First thing in the morning around 8am, I receive a call that the service tech Ali would be at my house within 45 mins. He arrived on time and after a brief discussion, he evaluated the situation and gave recommendations along with options. We choose the option we felt good about with NO pressure ever from him! We agreed to perform the cleanup service from the inside kitchen sink area. He did a great job keeping everything perfectly clean! He even put the booties on the wheels of the cleanup machine to roll through the house! Extremely professional, polite and informative. He also explained about a plumbing maintenance plan that I had already been researching on their website. It is very affordable and offers value including flushing my water heater annually. We had a 3:00 - 6:00 appointment window earlier this week with a promise that I would be called 30 minutes before the tech's arrival. At 5:53 I called Abacus as we had not heard from them and was told that the tech was not yet available and we would receive a call when he was. This pattern repeated itself through several telephone calls from me to Abacus until I finally cancelled the appointment out of frustration - just after 9:00 PM. Not once during this ordeal did Abacus call me to offer an update. We have an appointment with S&B Plumbing this afternoon which, incidentally, is much higher rated on Yelp. Shame on me for not consulting Yelp before calling Abacus. I won't make that mistake again. read more

I had a tree limb fall during a storm and take out my "weatherhead" late on a Saturday afternoon. After the power company and fire department gave me the all-clear, I had to find an electrician to come out to reattach the weatherhead to my home before CenterPointe would turn my power back on. I knew I would be paying a premium due to the after-hours, weekend call. I rececived a prompt response from Abacus and they showed up about when they said they would. Fast forward 3 hours or so, and I signed off on the electronic invoice, which I paid for with my credit card. When the Centerpoint guys came back, I commented that it had cost me nearly $1200 bucks. They asked "was your husband home?" When I said that he was travelling, they said, "yeah, you got ripped off". Then they showed me the pieces that the guy from Abacus had left behind, and said that he had reused the exisiting clamps to reattach the weatherhead. I called Abacus the following week and asked for an itemized copy of the invoice. They sent me a copy of the exact same invoice I had been provided with. I called back and explained that i wanted a detailed copy of my invoice. I was told that they would have to contact the manager of that department. I didn't really care who they got it from, but I wanted a detailed copy so that I could verify that the charges were reasonable and customary to what I should have been charged. A week later, still no response. I called back and got the same story. A week later, STILL no response. I called again and was AGAIN told that they would have to get this information from the manager of that department. I explained that I had been told this same story repeatedly and that nobody had ever bothered to contact me back. I then said that I was going to dispute the charge with my credit card company until I got the itemized receipt I had asked for on numerous occassions. The woman I spoke with then became very rude, and as she hung up, I heard her say to someone "she says she's gonna dispute the charge"..... I then called my credit card company. During the hour I was on the phone with them, they had Abacus on the other line. Finally, they came back and asked that I give Abacus some time to respond to my CC company because they (ABACUS) suspected fraud. My company refunded the charge and I heard nothing back from either. Abacus did not send me the requested itemized bill. Several months later, my credit card company reissueD the charge to my account. I never got the itemized receipt from Abacus. After a company tells you that THEY suspect fraud from one of their OWN employees or subcontractors, you tend to be a bit suspicous of their dealings. I'm not saying that they ripped me off or not. I AM saying that if they had nothing to hide, they should have produced the itemized receipt the first time I asked for it. You decide for yourself if this is a company with which you want to do business. read more

I called to schedule a FREE estimate for a whole house repipe on a home I'm closing on in two weeks. Abacus stated that since I'm not the home owner it will be $399- What a rip-off.. I want it scheduled and set up PRIOR to closing so I can have the work started the following day. No worries, I have asked 6 other contractors are willing to come out and give estimates. I'll have my roof and electrical done along with repipe- Abacus will NOT be receiving this or any other business. It's over a $12k job!!! Their policy is their loss Obviously this company is too big for their britches!!!! Outside of some critical failure (death/ job loss etc) the deal is going through. YOUR policy is not acceptable. We called Abacus for a coil cleaning and were quoted $79. My husband made sure to verify that it was for a "coil cleaning" and was told that it was indeed. However, on the day of our appointment, Abacus called to tell us 1) that the representative would be late and 2) that we had been misquoted. The $79 fee was a diagnostic fee. What?! Then when the representative arrived and was told that we wanted a cleaning and not a diagnosis, he insisted that he could not even enter the home unless we agreed to pay the diagnostic fee. After the service tech tinkered around for a longer check up than most other techs in the past & bringing an extra person which seemed like they were training; they spoke to my partner and kept telling him we needed a new furnace and condenser which yes, i knew that, but it was working fine before you came. Now, the AC has not worked since they left. I thought it was Nest. Waited until 9pm at night to call and ABACUS is now sending a tech over right now as I type this, but I wanted it known that I went to my garage to clear the pathway to the back door to get to condenser and guess what. When I went to check the area your technician of 16 years experience left the equipment box open with a part outside of it. I am not a technician but I can tell you the piece he did not plug back in says "ON". One year ago I would have never left this review BUT my goodness has this company changed. They installed a water heater for me in early 2020, before the world shut down. Perfect customer service. On 4/6/21, I called because I had an issue with the water heater. I called after 5pm CT because that's when I got home from work and noticed the issue. Not one person answered. After 4 minutes each time on hold, the recording sends you to a voicemail. After the 3rd time, I left a voicemail. As of 4/7 at 5pm, no one has returned that voicemail. I called separately on the morning of 4/7/21 and was able to get an appointment but no time or time frame. Finally at 4:40pm CT on 4/7 they call to say they can be on their way and to call back. 11 phone calls and 3 text later to Abacus- NOTHING!!!! Straight voicemail and silence. When I finally got thru to a human, it was an answering service that just passed my call to dispatch. Unbelievable!!! Do. Not. Waste. Your. Time. read more

So I endlessly scoured... through contradictory reviews for a good plumber. It was maddening- like polar opposites- one after another. It just didn't make sense! So what do you do? What do you DO? Establish potentials' credentials, educate to the best of your ability, outline your criteria checklist, get multiple quotes, ask questions, then pull the trigger & hope you have your sights aligned & your gut in good working order. Enter Abacus: stellar credentials, solid history. rated high on other platforms, reputable, good testimonials- YAAAaaa uhh, wait- Oh Yelp! After so many conflicting comments I realized just how subjective the rating system can be. Shouldn't there be certain guidelines on how stars are bestowed? If not, aren't we then at the mercy of one's own subjectivity? I don't know, if someone raves about great service, etc but didn't like the price they should've known about prior... is 1 star a fair assessment? Perhaps. So I had cause for pause. Did some more leg work & voila! IRL now, Enter Abacus. Overall I'm happy to report the PLUMBING experience was a success. Jeffrey, who fielded my initial call was helpful & answered all preliminary questions & concerns (based on those less than stellar reviews). I found out EXACTLY how much the charge would be to come out & found multiple coupons, one of which I was directed to their website. Chris C & Mark M were courteous, friendly, professional & knowledgeable. Umm & very clean. Seriously, one of the best clean up experiences I've ever had with a contractor. We had a leak behind our wall. Cracked pipe oh no. Chris told me exactly what to expect, EXACTLY what he was going to do & again, answered all questions. He itemized prices & compared costs a) stand alone & b) with "membership" WHICH I was completely opposed to at 1st. I think for jobs that will be more expensive, it's worth it due to the benefits/discounts off-setting yearly membership. Plus, it's easy to cancel if you're not happy or change your mind. (No, I'm not a spokesperson). I think they have it to establish a trust, customer loyalty & in the end isn't that what we're all looking for? One has to balance what kind of credentials, work & guarantee one wants against cost. Expecting quality doesn't mean you have to be scraped against the coals, but it also doesn't mean cheap labor. True professionals usually worked hard to earn a reputation & usually work harder to justify compensation & earn your trust. Reputable businesses do this-- they want to stay in business. Chris also recommended other professionals to help us in other areas. I watched him work. He took pictures for me. I took my own. He explained, educated & more importantly did a good job & corrected the problem. I waited a couple days to make sure we had no issues with the work & decided to post a favorable review. Was I shouting yippee from the rafters when I realized how much we would be set back? No. But I went into it with my eyes open & think the price was fair. Had a failing garbage disposal on my outdoor kitchen sink. Found Abacus from Home Advisers. This company was on it. The company dispatchers kept us updated on the Technician arrival time - they called us a couple of times. That was impressive in itself. Josef Moran arrived to our house to fix the garbage disposal in our outdoor kitchen. He went down and hit a reset button hidden away and it started working immediately. This was 6:30 in the evening and he No Charged the visit since it was so quick. Josef single highhandedly gave me a feeling of instant credibility for Abacus. His attitude was awesome. He said he is the after-hour guy and loves to work. As a business owner myself, I would only tell Abacus to hold onto this guy. He is representing Abacus well. At a low rate and I was financed before the work even began. I have *10 years of service charge free. My house was swept clean after the work was completed. The driveway also was clean. I was told that the whole electrical box would have to be replaced and new wiring would have to be run to the electrical box near the street. The bid was over $8000, yes $8000. Ridiculous!! I called Bowne Electric and they did the job for $765. That was 3 months ago and we have had no issues. Don't trust Abacus!! read more

This company is very responsive and their technicians show up on time and are very professional. That's about all I can say that's good about this company. They're ridiculously expensive. Any time they come out they tell you that you need a new system and that system is going to be an exorbitant amount of money! Their techs are obviously commissioned or told to try and upsell as much as possible. They gave me a quote of $450 to replace a capacitor on my ac unit. The part is literally $40 or less. Had someone from Abacus out today to give me a quote for a simple kitchen faucet replacement -- $350! That's absolutely insane. All the hardware was provided. Guy didn't seem motivated from the moment he walked in the door, but said the pricing is company standard. Ok, then -- highly disappointing but no, thank you. More infuriating than the incredible inflation for services, however, was their conduct when I tried to comment on a Facebook ad I just so "happened" to be served a few hours after my experience. I stated my concerns, hit submit, and ...my comment was immediately scrubbed. Tried again to be sure. A third time...again, scrubbed. There were no cuss words or derogatory insults in my post. They just seem to subscribe to a service that deletes honest reviews -- if they're negative. I'm in digital marketing and know how it works. I don't have a beef with the technicians abilities that are employed by Abacus. The scheduling for services is very lacking in customer appreciation. If you schedule a service for any given day, Abacus only tell you that the technician will call you 30 minutes prior to his arrival. In other words (IOW) you may have to wait all day for them to show for an appointment. This in my mind is unacceptable. They should be able to at least give you a two hour window for the expected service and if that does not happen a simple telephone call to the customer to update the arrival time should be made. I called for an appointment last Friday, the 28th of December. They said they would come from 1 to 3 on the 31st. They did come at 3:15- it too until 4:30 to get his manager to give a quote for the two bathrooms that both needed a repair. The sink in the back has been serviced by Abacus in the past, and they ordered seals for the two handles, and cleaned out the drain. The manager said they would not order parts, did not want to warranty work on the sink. Recommended I get all new sink, and that would also require re-plumbing of the sink with attachment of new sink to wall, new plumb to wall, and installation of faucet. For the front bathroom where I needed to repair or replace the tub faucet, the technician said I would need a new part. He had the part on the truck. Then, he did not have the part and would just return at 9 AM the 2nd January, after he went to the plumbing warehouse to pick up. Cost for this 249. Ask me to sign for the work. Next day, the plumbing did not come, so I needed to go to a job site- as I work from home and finally rescheduled the plumber at 10:45 after waiting. Then the plumber was to come today at 8 AM the 3rd. At 10:30 he called to say he was on his way-.Asking why he did not come at 8, he was in a meeting. Then at 11:30 called to say he had a flat. Two calls to center, no updates. We called them at 1:36 PM, said to cancel this appointment. Manager then calls back one hour later, wanting to know whats up?! read more

Awful company. We bought a Lennox 20 seer unit from them and nothing but issues. First Jeremy of the company claimed it would cool at the rooms within 1 degree difference. NOPE. My bedroom is 81-84F while the kitchen and living room are at 75F. No matter how many times Abacus comes out they don't care. They haven't bothered to install an another vent or another line or any type or fix. Instead they scheduled for a pipe cleaning tomorrow. Abacus doesn't care that I work night shift and will lose yet more sleep again Tuesday and I bet Wednesday too since they love to send out people to "assess the situation". This isn't even our first issue, the first issue was the unit was as loud as a Jet when it ran. Abacus fixed that citing the project manager Jeremy didn't leave notes that we needed a larger intake even though it's standard to upgrade the intake for a four ton 20 seer Lennox system. Issue after issue with Abacus and I still get to sleep in heat at night. Awful company, buyer beware. They'll make promises and not deliver. They'll waste your time with recurring "maintenance" visits instead of actually resolving anything. Hope this company gets sued. Horrid. Heh, I guess I'm a sadomasochist when it comes to spending money. I called Abacus once more (third time's a charm, right? NO.) when our downstairs stopped cooling. They came out quickly (yay!) and it was the same guy who replaced the outdoors units when we moved in. He checked outside and remarkably, both units were peachy keen. Up in the attic, we had an issue with our blower motor and we need to replace the entire system. According to him, our units were crappy models made in Mexico and he could put better ones in and give us a warranty. While I was soaking in all of this wonderful information he went out to his car. I assumed he was getting a quote for me but he basically just left. I didn't even get a goodbye :'( I knew I wasn't going to make this mistake thrice with Abacus so I called a family owned company in my area at the recommendation of a coworker. They needed the serial # on my units outside and in the attic, so I obliged. After walking outdoors and snapping a photo of the sticker on the unit Abacus replaced 2 years ago, I saw it. "MADE IN MEXICO". The very reason he said my attic components were crap. That's the moment when I said PEACE OUT and decided to never call them ever again. #byefelicia P.S. Abacus sent me a private message to contact them regarding my 6/17/15 review. They attempted to *compensate* me to remove the review. I declined their offer. Abacus's attempt to remove negative reviews through monetary compensation is highly unethical. Such practice undermines the entire premise of third party review sites (e.g. Yelp, Google review...etc.) which exist to ensure transparency between businesses and consumers and promotes integrity of business practices. read more

I had a terrible experience with these guys. The A/C tech showed up, made a very cursory survey of my units (didn't open a single panel) and made an estimate. The prices were astronomical! He didn't consult a price book, or even open up any of the equipment to verify that the remedy he proposed would fix the problem. In fact, when I requested that he further check the system to at least ensure that the over $4,000 repair he proposed would work, he said that such a check would be over $300. As an added bonus, this little visit cost me $50 from the get-go, because this is one of the few companies in town that charge for their estimates. I thought that meant that since they were getting compensated for their time regardless, they were more likely to make an honest recommendation. Boy, was I wrong! It was unreal; I was livid. I politely ushered him out, and called another company. Within 12 hours, the problem was fixed by another major Houston A/C company and every single fix they proposed (the same remedies) were at least 33% less - some as much as 1/4 of the price! Look at the other reviews; my incident is not isolated. Avoid these shysters! I found the help I needed from ABC - they deserve the good press for their honest work. Update: I had considered softening my review, given the conciliatory attitude of my initial complaint responder. However, when I talked to the manager, although he was very nice, and he did assure me that he would do everything he could to rectify the situation in the future, he also told me that he had already seen my reviews and "Yelp isn't exactly where [he] would go..." for this type of information. Abacus Plumbing - Home of the $123 bait and switch offer. These fraudsters widely advertise they will unplug a sink, tub or toilet drain for $123 with a 123 day guarantee. Don't believe it. After booking an appointment, confirming the offer and printing their online coupon they refused to honor their offer and pulled a "pay us $285 for the same services" switch. Their offer has restrictions. We met every one of them. They still wouldn't honor their advertised deal. If you need a plumber, do yourself a favor and don't hire these con artists. REVIEW UPDATE--- Trying to cover their tracks, they now claim they never did the work and were refused access to our home. That's really funny because I have an invoice and payment receipt from their repairman where they charged me $285 for the quoted and advertised $123 service. I just saw an ad for Abacus that said you get help on the weekends at "Regular Pricing." This is deceptive. I called them on a Sunday and they said there WAS an overtime charge. When I asked why, given their ad on TV, they said, "We are out of "regualr price slots." Really? THAT is deceptive advertising if ever I heard it. HUGE SCAM!!! Charged us $800 for gas replacement, 4 months later AC unit is NOT working... wanted to charge us $150 for an after-hours appointment, but said the tech wouldn't come until mid-day the following day. How is that "after hours?!" Also, how is it that within less than 4 months of the job the initial tech did is not under warranty?! SO someone comes in and "replaces or Fixes" the unit but just a few months down the road they need to come for a revisit and charge an after hour fee because they are booked all day and apparently the next day, to come out and receive their appointment fee along with a service fee to do the exact same thing as the previous time.. waste of time and money.. no exact hour for appointment either, you just sit around waiting for someone to call and let you know their availability. This review has absolutely nothing to do with the plumbing technician (Lindell) that came to my house on Saturday; he was beyond professional and courteous. My problem with Abacus is this: when I originally called to schedule an appointment to have a wobbly toilet pulled and reset, I asked the in-take person for a ballpark quote. I was told she could not give me one, so I asked if I could speak with a plumbing supervisor. She said they couldn't give me a quote either and would not put me through to anyone. Now, I wasn't asking for an exact quote - I was looking for a 'best case scenario' range, knowing full well that if there was something else that needed to be repaired there would be an additional cost. The whole point in asking about costs, up front, was to avoid potential sticker shock. Well, sticker shock is definitely what I got! They are not the cheapest game in town; you are paying for professional service with a warranty and with that comes a cost (which they are more than happy to remind you of, multiple times). But, $321 to pull and reset a toilet (on top of the $49.95 service call)?? Seriously!? Ok, it is a messy job and I don't want to do it, so please go fix it. Just my luck...after pulling the toilet it is discovered that the flange is broken (I was fully aware this could be a possibility); that will be an ADDITIONAL $311!! Are you kidding me?! This is a part that ranges from $16 to $35, and the wax ring between $2 - $5 at Home Depot and takes about 15 minutes to replace. Oh, heck no! After a phone call to the supervisor (Jose), it was agreed that I would pay for the service call and we would be done. Within an hour, which included a trip to Home Depot, my toilet was repaired...by me. I personally spoke with Jose this morning to convey my complete dissatisfaction with their business practice regarding not discussing pricing before hand; he assured me that I should have been able to speak with someone as I originally requested and he will take this up with the in-take supervisor. The prices I was given by Lindell were pulled from a preset list on his iPad; there is availability to give this information to someone who requests it. Be well informed before you call Abacus and know the market for comparable services. read more
