What I did when I got home to the left and what she did to the right
    Kayla B.

*For the hair salon* Went in on a Sunday morning. Can't remember the stylists name? Molly maybe? She cut my hair great. I kept telling her shorter but she insisted on longer. I still wanted it a bit shorter but what ever. What I don't get is how badly she styled it with mousse and hairspray and more mousse and more hair spray. What she did is to the picture on the right. I went home to style and couldn't even run my fingers through my hair. I told her how I don't use much product in my hair ever too. And on the right is what I did what I got home. I don't understand how horribly a cosmetologist could style a clients hair like that. It didn't accentuate the cut at all.

Of all the Post Exchanges I have been to, the one in Fort Lewis is the best by far. Fort Sill, Fort Sam Houston, Fort Knox, and Fort Lee all have their own takes on the Big PX, but Fort Lewis just curb stomps them all and utterly destroys the competition. I would give second place to Fort Sam Houston, but even that place has a far inferior PX to Fort Lewis. This Post Exchange is spacious, clean, and has everything within reason that you would need while living at JBLM. Whatever they have, you can rest assured that they also probably have large quantities of it and won't run out any time soon. I took a moment to browse their electronics section and it's on par with what civilian electronics stores have to offer. Everything like clothing, cosmetics, snacks, appliances, etc. are available here for you to purchase without the addition of sales tax. If you tend to spend a lot of money, this may be a welcome feature for you. I just love how there's a military version of Target on base. Not that you can't go to the Target in Lakewood, but the PX is in a central location in JBLM and is one of the coolest things about the whole place.

This AAFES location has a main store, food court, optical center, florist, and various kiosks. The main store is set up like a department store, so there's a little bit of everything. The electronics department usually stocks the latest cds and dvds, although the selection is somewhat limited compared to Best Buy or Walmart. When shopping recently for laptops, I was a little disappointed with the selection. There weren't a lot of models to choose from, so I wasn't able to find what I was looking for without going elsewhere. I like that the main store carries a lot of brand name clothing such as Under Armour, Billabong, Quiksilver, North Face, and Columbia plus the fragrance department carries Chanel, Clinique, and Estee Lauder among many others. The perk to shopping at the Exchange is there is no sales tax! The food court has various eateries to choose from: Robin Hood, Anthony's Pizza, Taco John's, Cinnabon, Charley's Grilled Subs, and Manchu Wok. There is also a sushi place and a grill outside the main entrance. The food court is a great place to grab a quick bite while shopping or on your lunch break, but it gets really busy during the weekday lunch rush. Plan accordingly! Like all AAFES locations, a valid military ID is required to shop at the main store but not at the food court or other concessions.

HELP SAVE GOOD JOBS AT JBLM! The barbers who serve many of the men and women of the Armed Services at JBLM once made a decent wage and benefits, which they fought for and received over the years. Now Sammi Ko, the new vendors owner for the barbers shops, wants to cut the barbers' income by lowering the commission percentage they receive for every haircut! All while Sammi Ko cries of poverty, he is spending money to equip and buy products for many other barbershops here and across the nation. So I was glad I was able to check out this new store that opened up in the Tacoma Mall. There are lots of Asian, specifically Chinese brands of toys like Skullpanda and Dimoo but there are also some American characters here as well. Over all I was not too familiar with most of the characters, brands or merchandise however. I come I suppose from a different generation of toys with a heavy preference towards action figures which the merchandise isn't quite that as some of it comes across to me as frail or delicate so I imagine it is intended for display purposes only and perhaps even keep it still in the box. It's still a really cool store and there is all sorts of merch options to absorb despite getting the realization that I may have been "aged out" on some of this stuff by not knowing all of the references, books or origins of where some of this stuff is from. But despite that it's a cool place to go to check out what they have.

Fort Sam…read moreHouston, Fort Knox, and Fort Lee were all able to manage their clothing stores competently. I'm still trying to figure out why Fort Lewis has to be different. I don't understand why Fort Lewis has to have such a terrible store serve the thousands of dedicated soldiers who are stationed here. I'm not even one of those soldiers; I live an hour away and thus had created a list of certain items that I needed to purchase before time ran out. Thanks to the uselessness of this store, even that wasn't possible. This store is located at the end of a mini-mall in JBLM, so it's a wonder how the place could be so hot in October. I had to spend hours in this store to knock off all the things from my shopping list, and that definitely does not get pleasant when the place is like 90 degrees inside. Seriously, did they just not care? With such narrow aisles and so many people walking around, the place gets absurdly stuffy very fast and it appears they've made no effort to remedy the problem. Not even a drinking fountain inside the store so that you can have some water without walking out while carrying unpaid merchandise and getting arrested by the MPs for shoplifting. And so it was in my uniform in this immense heat that I had to find my items. It was also in this hellish sauna that I discovered how good they were at being out of stock of everything. Just very basic items like a 7 3/4'' black beret, or a size 40 ASU coat, or gold pins for Specialist (the most common rank), or the lightweight combat boots I was looking for in the size 9 wide. These things simply didn't exist here, and my only option at this point was to revisit on a later date and just pray that they've gotten some more of these things shipped in. It's not like the staff here is helpful or sympathetic; they don't even care. That's the next problem with this store. Not only will the workers here probably make no attempt at helping you find what you need, but there's also not enough of them. It took me several minutes of waiting just to find someone who worked there so I could ask them a question. I swear that they're all hiding in the back so they can avoid confronting customers and still get paid for being there. It would certainly explain how the lines at the checkout get so long; there's just not enough people there to handle the cash registers. The tailors here are a complete joke. Not only are they terrible at doing their job, but they are as rude to their customers as the civilians from BCT. The ones at Fort Knox sized me up very quickly and efficiently and without hassle. These ones probably hate their job so much that they're looking for any excuse to leave it, but not before being careless with as many customers as they can get away with. Again, I don't understand why something so simple has to be made so difficult here. While buying my supplies, I lugged around a grocery cart from outside because it was going to be too much to carry in a basket. I ended up needing to step out to get a drink and use the bathroom. This could only be accomplished by leaving the cart in the fitting room and then coming back to it later. And oh god, the fitting rooms were like the inside of a hot car except they smelled much worse and were littered with trash from previous occupants. Once again, these people just didn't care. Doing a little cleanup is apparently too much work for them. In my time here, I got maybe about 80% of what I came here to buy. There was all the stuff I mentioned earlier missing from my shopping bags, plus a few name tags for my ASU. It would have taken too long to order these things as they have to be custom-made, and the line was simply too long for me to bother with any of that. I only had enough time to wait in the cashier line, which itself was also ridiculously long. I walked out having paid over $680 for stuff that Uncle Sam wouldn't have given me. I dread finding out how far he's going to make me bend over next time to get everything I still need.
