Staff: Upon arrival, the lady employee was nice. Vehicle: We'd thought we have a nicer van for rental. We then received this 2014 Nissan Quest. This van has definitely seen better days. The vehicle was dirty and not well maintained. The transmission was slipping and It had the low-tire pressure system pop up and I've informed the employee to have a mechanic fill the tire up. The rear view mirror fell off and we had to reconnect it. The vehicle may have been bought from an auction and they're selling the vehicle online. Verdict: Arriving at Honolulu and straight to this rental was a bad experience. Vehicle was out of shape and location was horrible. Leave roller bags outside, as you go in to pick up your car...As a traveler, traveling along, this makes me feel total sketch. But, hey it's the local way. the lot is all gravel, so not easy to move those roller bags around. Inside, as you are away from your bags, and feeling vulnerable. You explain all the insurance you carry, yet none of them are "good enough". And the feeling that if you do not get "their" insurance, these fools will find anything to bill you for later. They even... take your phone and cancel the prepaid insurance you had. And all the documents are in a different same then the place you "rented" from online. I wonder why, oh cuz the fools have to keep changing their names to run from honest reviews and keep getting tourists to rent cars... clue 4-10 They bring you a car with 115k miles on it. No usb plugs, but a lovely cd player. And you think how the AF am I going to navigate if I cannot "see" or "hear" mapping instructions??? Don't worry they will upsell you in the lot from a 12 yr old car, to a 10yr old car "new car", which btw is not on the list inside when picking out the car... and try to charge you $30 more a day. Which still barely has modern car amenities. Then try to drive that piece of car... turns like a Mac truck, reds an oil change, was not cleaned out, sand on everything, no washer fluid. One highlight- the car looks local and I got waved thru a road where they would gave Gould a tourist to turn around. And maybe your car won't get broken into. This rental experience started wretched, and continued to be the top 5 most worst travel decisions I have ever made. Learn from me. Use real car rental companies. This is classic bait and switch! after paying over $500 for a van we got here and found out they were going to charge us more than $600 in addition to what we'd already paid. The people at the front desk minus the man that answers the phone (probably the manager), are pretty nice. Unfortunately, the cars are dirty and old and they don't like tourists. They will charge extra fees, such as for cleaning, and obviously not use it to actually clean the cars. l actually got hit by a truck trying to change into my lane while I was driving and cause very minor damage. I did purchase their collision damage waiver and was told I wouldn't have to pay anything if there was an accident but then all of a sudden I'm paying $1000 for a supposed quote that they say was $2500. The excuse was "paint matching." I talked to the guy. I don't even know his name, but I think he's a manager the way he was talking to me, but he was awfully annoyed that I got in an accident didn't care whether or not l was hurt and was just straight rude.. The key fob didn't work- and I found this out after I had already left because they had started the car and had the doors and trunk open for me. I don't see how people like this same business, especially after reading all the other reviews. It's probably why the man sounds so cranky when he answers the phone.. That's karma I guess. read more

I've honestly never written a review before but I had to for this place just to warn others. I rented a car through them via Priceline. Originally they were going to charge me for the collision insurance, I decided I no longer wanted it and would go with my own insurance. The lady at the front desk was kind and called billing while I was still there. I could hear her in front of me telling them to refund me the nearly $600 for the collision insurance while I had the rental. She informed me it would be 7-10 days for my refund to be posted and I said thank you and went on my way. It has now been 35 days and I have yet to receive my refund. When I call and ask to speak to billing they tell me that billing will reach out to me. 2 weeks and I haven't got a call. When I call back now they don't answer my phone calls. I called from a friends phone and asked to speak to a manager/billing and when they realized who it was they hung up and won't answer calls from that number either. What kind of legitimate business does this? There's not a person on this earth who wouldn't follow up on a $600 refund they were told they would receive. I have never in my entire life dealt with a business so shady and rude. I would never rent or buy a car from here ever again and I highly suggest you take your business elsewhere. Emailed and then called later and left a voicemail. Three days later, no response so I called them again and talked with one of the salesmen. When I explained that I had called earlier and emailed them, he interrupted and said, "Just hurry up and get to the point." I asked him why he was being rude, and from there on he got nasty. He asked for my name and said he didnt have a record of me in the computer. I asked him if he had any documentation to support that this truck was a real TRD PRO. I would not recommend A1 Auto Hawaii to anyone under any circumstances. I want to specifically highlight the employees Oz (aliases include Masa and Masaharu) and Makana. Avoid this company and those employees at all costs. They are awful to work with. I rented a vehicle here in early October 2021 for a good rate. So far, so good. David, who I worked with, tried to up-sell me on rental car insurance, which I declined because I had adequate coverage through my credit card. Upon returning the vehicle several weeks later, I had accidentally created a small paint chip on the bumper - my fault, and I took responsibility for it. Here's where it got messy. Oz (again, aliases include Masa and Masahara depending on the reviews you read) worked with me, and told me he needed to charge me a fee in order to finish the transaction. I didn't know any better and paid $500 using the same credit card (in retrospect, I should have refused). He told me the rental vehicle would need to go a body shop, get an estimate done, and be repaired. He acted like he was doing me real favor by only charging me $500, and assured me that I would be able to submit the claim to my insurance and get that $500 reimbursed. Since submitting the claim to my insurance company, I have not been able to get the necessary documents from A1 Auto Hawaii to complete my claim to my insurance company to get the $500 fee reimbursed. The communication from A1 Auto Hawaii has been horrible. I have emailed the email address I was given multiple times requesting the relevant documents, with no response. I have texted Oz multiple times, which he typically ignores. The only time he has responded is when I told him I was beginning to get a bad feeling about things and didn't want things to get ugly, or that I was several steps away from taking legal action. The first time we talked, he gave vague promises about getting me the documents, which he never did. He also denied ever receiving my email requesting documents despite it being sent to the correct email address multiple times. Our most recent interaction included him bullying me via text, calling me a "tough guy" and challenging me to call him back after ignoring multiple message (see screenshot). He then left the following voicemail after I ignored his call: "Dan, that's enough with the fucking legal threats already. Give me a fucking call when you get this message, brother. I have been more than responsive to you with the way our company does things, ok? So we've been doing our due diligence, you just have to wait like everybody else, man. So, give me a fucking call when you get this. Thank you so much." The irony is that Oz has not been responsive, communicative, or from my perspective done any due diligence. I suspect my number has been blocked, because when I call the company, it rings once and then beeps, which is a known sign that a number has been blocked. As a last ditch effort, I called yesterday to try to get documentation, and reached an employee who identified himself as Makana. He told me the email address that Oz/Masa/Masaharu has told me was wrong, and to send my request to a different email address - then immediately hung up on me. When I called back, it appeared my number had been blocked. I called using a different phone, got through to Makana, and asked his name. After identifying himself, he belligerently asked who I was, and when I refused to answer, hung up on me. This company is rotten to the core. They have no interest helping the customer and are angry, demeaning, and rude. Use ANYBODY else for your rental and auto purchasing needs. read more

We had to rent a car in a pinch when our main vehicle sold a lot quicker than expected. I called with questions about returning the rental later than my reservation, I was stuck at work and could not get there in time. I had questions on the process, Rate, etc. I thought I was being proactive instead of just not showing up at our end time. His attitude SUCKED, and when I brought that to his attention he hung up on me. Not to mention the car shook like something was wrong, a headlight was out and the car was infested with ants. The only reason I'm taking the time to write this review is because I think this business is scamming people. They operate under A1 Car Rental and Economy Car Rental. Beware of their intimidation tactics. The customer service is appalling, the vehicles are unsafe to drive, and they force you to buy insurance and find ways to extra charge. We arrived and waited more than an hour to begin the intake process. Numerous customers were frustrated with the long wait time. When we nicely asked for info on how long the wait would be, we were met with aggression and intimidation from the people working there. I have never been treated so poorly as a customer. I was asked to pay the amount owing for the car rental without being presented with an invoice to review. I was simply handed the credit card machine. When I asked to see the invoice the man helping me was visibly annoyed and said "You don't really want to see all this, don't you trust me"? There were additional charges that were unexpected, including insurance that I am quite certain I didn't need. After a long day of travel, long wait to get the car and feeling quite intimated by these people, I paid. The vehicle was in poor condition. The wheel alignment was off with a strong pull to the left plus a grinding sound when the wheel was turned. Be careful here. I was told I had to buy supplements insurance unless I could prove that I had it. I was presented with the credit card terminal to pay before being provided with an invoice to summarize the charges I would be paying for. First car they gave me had a plastic reflective 'glass' taped to the side mirror that was impossible to see out of. Not only would that not pass a HI safety check, its incredibly dangerous to drive like that. Second car they gave me I ended up taking because I couldn't wait any longer (1hr wait). The brakes are sketchy and barely work and the alignment is so off the wheel shakes when you go over 40. Affordable... but at what cost? read more

This business deserves ZERO stars. My experience parallels those of 30 yelpers Below. Here is my quick summary: 1. Remote, 3.2 mile location from the airport; 2. Old banged-up vehicles that didn't make on its used, adjacent sales lot; 3. No Customer Service area -- just a wooden old barrack (see pics); 4. Slow shuttle service to/from the airport. Waited 30-mins for one to depart. When complained I was told that this's my fault for not allowing enough time prior to the flight's departure (3:15 hrs prior); 5. Rude pushy ghetto service; 6. Nickel and dime-over-gas. Returned the car on Full with the arrow SLIGHTLY below the Max bar. I was told to go back to the gas station and put another $.89 (yes, cents !!!!) or pay $10 penalty fee. I really wish I could rate this place with ZERO STARS. This is the worst car rental place I have ever used. I am not exaggerating. It is really thee worst. This location is not convenient. You have to take a shuttle from the airport to the car rental place. The shuttle does not come frequently enough, nor is the shuttle itself clear or easy to find. When I tried to call for help, the rudest people would pick up the phone and try to rush me off. They barely helped at all, if at all. Their customer service was so bad. As I entered their office (which was merely a low end mobile home reconstructed), I witnessed many other customers arguing and complaining to their employees about problems with the car. This was really a sign of how awful the cars they provide are. I wish I took those signs. Alas, I did not, and rented the car anyway. The car was so low-end and poorly kept. The hubcaps must have been bought at a dollar store or something because they pop off easily. The air conditioning was awful - could not feel cool air no matter the setting!! I also paid extra money to rent a specific car model, but did not receive that model. I'm really trying to look out for you people. Don't rent from this place if you can help it. First things first rude customer service. I called on January 7, 2018 at around 2pm to inquire about a vehicle at A-1 since the post said automatic, but the description says 5 speed manual. Guy on the phone didn't even know if it was a 5 speed or 6 speed manual, and kept rushing me on what I wanted. He also kept saying "are you coming to steal it from us?". I picked a vehicle from this place for purchase last month and it didn't have a single issue. When it came time for the vehicle inspection it didn't pass because of a faulty tire from sitting on the lot so long. I took it back to get a tire expecting to have to pay for it. Guess what. I was so excited for my honeymoon in Hawaii that I didn't think to read the reviews on the car rental. We got a really good price for a car rental through them and I should've been suspicious but I didn't think twice. We got here through their shuttle and came upon a cabin like home where we checked in. I waited outside with the luggage while my hubby checked in. He called to let me know the lady is pushing for us to buy the insurance. I walked inside to let the lady know that we won't be needing it since we have our personal insurance that rolls over. She was persistent and kept pushing so I called my insurance to confirm it covers rental cars. I gave her a final firm no and she still kept trying to sell it but we kinda just ignored her. We got a crappy stock Nissan that didn't even have mirrors in the overhead covers. There were also no lights in the back seats so when you go into your car it's just all dark. We drove it off the lot but each day the sounds of the engine would get worse and sputter. It finally broke down 2 days before we were going to fly back home but thank goodness that we were at our Airbnb when that happened. We were trying to head to dinner in Waikiki when our engine wouldn't start. We thought it just needed time but when my husband checked the engine, he noticed liquid coming out of the battery. We just thought it was wet from the rain but my husband hypothesized that the battery was prob dead. Called my insurance road side assistance and got someone to come to us fairly quickly. He took one look under the hood and said that the battery is dead and we shouldn't even have driven it off the lot. He also asked where we rented it from and to never do that again. He jump started it for us and suggested one of us go to a reliable place to rent a new car and drive this junk car back to the rental and park it on the street since the rental was already closed. We had to fill up gas before return and the car wouldn't start again so we had to call our guy to jump start again. Needless to say it was a really crummy night. Everything was closed so we ended up having to get a frozen pizza from Safeway for dinner. The next day we drove back with my nice upgrade from enterprise and returned the car. The guy who helped us drive it back in was not even surprised when we told him the battery was dead, he just nonchantly went to get his jumper box and went outside to jump it and drove it back on the lot. When we went back into the office to try to get our money back for the last day of our rental, a really nice guy helped us but he couldn't give us back the money because their manager Panda was not there. He told us to call panda and everytime we did, no one would route us to him or he refuse to talk to us. Thank goodness it was only an extra day that we never got the money for, imagine if it was the whole week worth...? They don't care and they won't give you your money back. They don't care if it's their fault and put a damper on your special occasion, they just want to make money and not care about the safety or cleanliness of their cars. Absolutely disgusting... We actually saved a couple from this monstrosity of a place. When the guy was going out to get a car, we told them to just Yelp the place and they ended up leaving the lot to catch a ride share back to a more reliable car rental. Not only was the car a piece of junk, it was also cockroach infested!!! Sooo gross!!! We had cockroaches crawling on us and we didn't see them until the last day, same day our car broke down. I ended up getting a cheap car here as a package incentive from booking.com when I planned my vacation. Knowing I wouldn't be doing a lot of driving, I thought saving a few bucks on a budget place would be all right. I got a Nissan Versa that worked. That's about it. This place is basic. Like two portables for offices shared with a used car lot basic. Getting your car involves signing your name on a clipboard so you can wait outside in the summer heat until they call your name. Service was slow. You wait on a porch in front of the "office". Not a great way to get a car when you're traveling with a young child. The actual paperwork portion of the rental wasn't any worse than any other car rental place and the agent was perfectly decent. The shuttle driver to/from the airport (far away) were also very willing to handle bags and chat. These two things are stops me from going 1 star. If I could do 1.5 stars I would. Judging by other reviews here I'm being really generous. When I returned the car to the always very crowded lot (because at least 50% of the lot is a used car place) there were no agents to take the car. I walked into the office and was told that if I was returning the car I had to wait by the vehicle. Eventually someone from the far end of the lot came over to take the car without saying anything and without allowing us to finish unloading our baggage. He got in the car after I mentioned the keys were in the ignition. Then he backed the car toward me while I was shouting I still had a bag to unload. Who backs up vehicles with the trunk up and with no rear visibility? You'll get a cheap car rental, but it's not THAT cheap and really do you want to deal with this kind of headache the first thing off a long flight to Honolulu? read more

Would definitely give less than one star if possible! Do not be fooled by the cheap price. I was rented a beat up (very bad shape) 2006 Toyota Camry without a working clock or working power mirrors. When I called to report these issues I was met with a rude sales associate that claimed she didn't know what I meant by "the mirrors on the sides of the car do not respond to the buttons." For the amount they are charging for a stolen hubcap and some sand on the ground, they should really invest in proper working automobiles. read more

Don't go here. Wish I'd read reviews first. The paperwork you sign is on a tablet and you have no idea what you're signing. The car was a ten year old model; dents everywhere and none of the chargers worked so out phones and gps couldn't recharge during the trip. The guy filling out the paperwork said there was 1/2 tank of gas so he was marking 3/4 to do a favor; happened to check paperwork and he filled it out as full. Tried selling me a car for $10,000 over blue book value. The prices of the vehicles here are insane (in a bad way).

This was our first time using this car rental. Let me break it down. They are a small operation so they don't have as many shuttles as Alamo or Budget. You have to wait a bit to get a ride to the lot. They aren't located at or near the airport at all. The shuttle needs to get on the freeway to get you there. So be prepared to wait. Attached to the car rental is a used car lot. Checking in can take longer than other companies because the person checking you in goes outside to get you into the car as well. There's not a second attendant. So the line can move slowly. The customer service was friendly. We rented a compact car and were expecting a Nissan Versa or Toyota Yaris, instead we received a Fiat. Which was an odd car for a car rental. The car had a bunch of broken controls and wasn't cleaned very well. The USB adapter and cigarette lighter were broken so we couldn't charge our phones and GPS. The car had a lot of dents and scratches plus the tires had little tread. We rented it for $20 a day so I'm not sure what we were expecting. You get what you pay for. We were going to be in meetings most of the days so we just needed something to get us from point A to B. Unfortunately, one of the days it wouldn't turn over. The valet tried several times along with us. I was about to call customer service but then my husband got it to start. It ran the rest of the time but it did cause a bit of anxiety for the rest of our trip. Upon returning we were greeted with friendly service. We told them about the problem and they said they would check it out for next customer. The shuttle was quick and the driver was super friendly. She had a sign that read "Our drivers are paid by your tips". So expect to give her something to take you back to airport. She is trying to make a living... I walked in and showed what I needed, the owner said I have to make a appointment, I m okay with this, then next day early morning, I noticed I'm gonna be rip off if I show up there, only the model I showed him yesterday was increased 4K. PLEASE PLEASE read the reviews for this place before booking. We rented from this place as my wife had saw that the prices here were slightly lower than any of the other car rentals at the airport. From our past experiences renting cars, most car rentals were similar so it has never been a big deal. Enter Economy Rent a Car... When we arrived at the rental car location, we were 3rd in line. Overall, we had to wait roughly an hour until we had service. The reason being that the 2 people in line ahead of us were both experiencing issues with the cars issued to them. One car had the check engine light on and the other had a low tire pressure issue. When it came to our turn, our group had made two separate reservations (one for a full size and one for a smaller size). When I asked my own agent why I was being assigned a smaller car, we realized that the other agent got our two reservations mixed up. Instead of just correcting the error, instead we got berated for not noticing the mix up earlier. When it came to the actual car that we received for the rental, we received an old 2010 model car. The car was filthy, the wheels looked worn out, and the starter sounded like it needed replacing. I was never so happy to return the car at the end of the trip. I also forgot to mention earlier that the rent a car location was also a few miles away from the airport. I definitely would not recommend anyone rent from this location. You are in Hawaii for some fun and relaxation. The last thing you want to worry or stress out about is your car rental. 3 days after returning home, I see a new charge come in ($61.80) for apparently no reason at all. Avoid at all costs! This place needs to be shut down! Running a used car dealership and renting out the vehicles. Charged us an additional $25 per day for insurance even though we had our own, as we only had an Australian Drivers Licence. Vehicle was dirty, scratched, smashed and dents everywhere.. Horrible company! Avoid at all costs! I booked a rental car via Travelocity. My plane landed at 7:10am and I had no checked luggage so I immediately headed over to the rental car shuttle area and began waiting. Their shuttles don't start running until 7:30am so I wasn't concerned when I saw other rental company busses coming and going but no one ever came. I called the company and was told that the shuttle service was having mechanical difficulties. I also told them that I had lost my credit card and asked if I could pay by a debit card that had a visa symbol. I was told that paying by debit card rather than credit card would cost me an extra $20 a day. To make a long story short, when Travelocity intervened, they claimed there wasn't any mechanical difficulties with their shuttle and that the $20/day additional charge was for their insurance and not for my debit card use. They said I didn't have to get the insurance if I was already insured but that I had to put down a $1,000 deposit instead. By this point, I had zero trust in the company so decided to skip the car rental and take the bus instead. For $2.50, I got to my destination just fine and didn't have to worry about where to park my car once I arrived. read more

The worst place you can rent a car from. Had already prepaid for the car for a week. Turns out you prepaying does nothing for you. So many extra fees once you actually get the the rental site. Turns out not to be the deal you thought you were getting. Wouldn't recommend anyone to rent from this place. Will definitely be going somewhere else to rent next time I visit!! read more

I've rented several cars in my travels- and this was by far the worst. I've never had a car that was more than one year old- and this place had given me a 7 year old piece of crap, that made noise when we turned, the shocks were burnt out, and the tire pressure light was on. It was old and it looked like it had been in an accident and repainted. I settled for it because I had unfortunately already prepaid and was just lucky that my travel partner was an auto mechanic... Also, the airport shuttle took forever, the rental lot is the furthest I've ever traveled from the airport and it was just not up to par with all the other rental agencies I've worked with before. I will NEVER rent from them again. Staff were friendly- so they get credit for the star. read more
