We came on Mother's Day and enjoyed our time immensely. I made a reservation on Open Table and although we were around 30 minutes late because of traffic, they were able to accommodate us. The service was very friendly and personable. Immediately upon seating they bought our bread and butter with garlicky olives and homemade chips. We got a Sangria pitcher which was maybe a bit too much for just my mom and I, but it kept us in a festive mood to say the least lol. We got the hot appetizer plate for two and according to the bill got a small portion of grilled octopus. I didn't know that it would be separate charge.. I thought the hot apps came with grilled octopus. Anyways it was a really delicious mixed seafood platter with red Portuguese sauce. The mains we got were Paella Marinera, Chicken Princesa, and the entree portion of Grilled Octopus and a side of Portuguese fries and House Salad. The house salad I asked for creamy Italian but it ended up being oil and vinegar. The Chicken Princesa was not on the menu due to there being no more asparagus but they made it with broccoli and tasted great! The paella was steaming hot and came with a lot of seafood and the flavoring was on point. Also big portion. The grilled octopus was tender and delicious just like the appetizer. I liked the Portuguese fries which came with a savory gravy. Overall we enjoyed our meal immensely and the price was not too crazy. We have a lot of leftover paella. Used to come here often, then found other places. Been back a few times and food and service still very good, but with a more limited menu. Miss the older variety, but their sangria is dead on great. Like the gratis olives and chips (though not hot) as well as the Portuguese bread. read more

This was our second time dining at A Taberna. The food was fresh, well prepared and plentiful! The skirt steak was tender and delicious! The seafood platter was beyond our expectations! ( We had to take home the remainder.) The end of the meal we were celebrating my husband's birthday so we had carrot cake, was moist,fresh and fabulous and the termisu was homemade as well! Very well prepared in a small mason jar. To end the dinner we each had a cappuccino which was excellent. The ambiance and wait staff was tops! This diamond in the rough is worth going to. It is a Portuguese restaurant but don't let that diswaied you. Everything is simple and not over the top. Lovely food, staff and a nice atmosphere. The portions were pretty big, I got the meat platter for my teenagers and they barely finished it. I could have easily split the paella with another person. Everything was cooked perfectly. The Shrimp in Garlic sauce was the favorite and the octopus was the least favorite, but still very good. We also got a flan and a tiramisu which were both delicious. We had the Portuguese red blend wine and red sangria to start and it was tasty. We skipped appetizers and went for dinner. The food was amazing. The mediterranean swordfish was a hearty portion and very tender. Covered with olive oil, onions, capers and red peppers a d served with a side of roasted potatoes, mashed potatoes or rice. We had both types of potatoes and my favorite were the mashed potatoes. We also had the mariscada com molho verde. A lot of shellfish in the pot in a light garlicky green sauce. Then for dessert we had the flan and the creme brûlée. Both were rich and decadent and I would definitely get the same deserts again. We ended the night with a glass of port and it was a perfect meal. This place is a hidden gem that reminded us of our time in Portugal with there authentic food. My paella Valenciana was possibly the best meal that I have had in 2025 and could easily feed two. Dessert was served with a candle as the staff sang Happy Birthday. The first time I've been here was the last week of 2023. I didn't write a review because the service was terrible because they short staffed. Well, I went back with my gal pal and the Portuguese food was great but the service was terrible. The waiters took care of the regulars first and just stood around with the other customers. As soon as you walk in they bring bread, chips and black olives to the table. The octopus was tender and delicious. My paella was delicious filled with tender seafood and sausage. My sangria was delicious. My gal pal ordered a Moscow mule and it was all ice no drink at all. She took two sips and the cup was empty with ice. When I complained about it they looked at me like I was from Mars. They replaced the drink but the looks I got. The place was a little noisy but ok. Would I come back? Amazing food, service, and ambiance are what we experienced at La Taberna. I had the chef's signature monkfish and shrimp in champagne sauce and my beau had beef stew with mashed potatoes. Both dishes were superb. The desserts, flan, and creme brulee, were divine. The check didn't include an extra fee for using a credit card which has been an unwelcome fee in many other nearby restaurants. While you peruse the menu, enjoy the homemade potato crisps, assorted breads, and black olives. The service was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed our early Sunday dinner at La Taberna. Beware!!! Waiter told us they only had 1 TBone special but they had a Porterhouse. Never told us the price for the special. TBone was $55 the Porterhouse $72. when a special is that much $ it's just proper form to let a customer know. Also double charged for an appetizer. Was looking for a Portuguese restaurant on a whim and came across A Taberna. It was quite the surprise. It's a small restaurant on the side of the road. The food was fantastic. We tried snail for the first time and we're not disappointed. All the food was filled with rich flavor and the seafood was beyond fresh and tender. First time back in Long Beach so I came back to A Taberna. E ordered the lamb lollipops and the chicken princesa. I love the lollipop lamb chops and often make them at home. Figured they would be the hero dish but the chicken was really delicious. The lollipops were still very good but lacked a little flavor IMO. The chicken really surprised us! The cheese and asparagus were a nice topping and the sauce was really delicious! We mopped up every bite! Service was ok and the only complaint was the wait for dinner...took quite a while. It's the first time I was back since pre-pandemic. I ordered my usual , Mariscada in green sauce, right on the menu I noticed it lacked the lobster it previously contained. In any event, I ordered it. I found the pot contained the usual mussels, clams, scallops and shrimp. Everything but the shrimp were cooked to perfection, the shrimp were overcooked and rubbery to taste. At $34 I felt cheated. My wife's salmon dish was excellent. Loved that they set up a little outdoor area to accommodate guests during COVID. Sangria there is great! And it's a winner deal for a pitcher. You seriously must try it! We had went out to eat at 3 places nearby in a row and we're on a bit of a sangria kick and this was by far the best one! Every single thing we ordered was great. My favorite was the shrimp in garlic sauce. The only thing I didn't care for was the rice that had olives in it (but they don't tell you that so I had no idea till I tried it). On the menu it clearly states you can get mashed potatoes or rice... But we were only offered rice. I only remembered there was a second option after I didn't like the first... But by the time the waiter came back out I was basically done with my meal anyway so I just skip the carbs. However somebody else in my party ordered a dish that came with mashed potatoes and I have to say they were delicious... Really really good mashed potatoes. So I probably should've gotten them since they did come with the meal! Next time. The sauce on that dinner was also really great some kind of seafood lobster type sauce but I couldn't get enough of. I think it's really the sauce is here that put this place on the map. From the garlic sauce to the seafood sauce, sorry I don't remember what it was called but they put it on a lot of different dishes! Dinners are a touch expensive - But the deal on the sangria evens it out. Meaning you pay about the same amount for a similar dinner at another local restaurant for food and wine... Because there you pay a little more for wine. Overall great place, I've passed it a ton of times over the years and never went in... But now I'll be going back! read more
