We have been going here forever! I have my haircut by Shelly and my daughter has her haircut by Robin. Both hair artists do a wonderful job. We never have to wait for our appointment. They take their time and never rush. We always spend time chatting and catching up. They make us feel more like family than a customer. From perms or tinting, or cuts, and products, they've been doing it and doing it and doing it well for many years. I've been coming here for over 6 years and have had my hair cut by Liz. I've been looking around the San Mateo/Redwood City Area for a good salon, and I really like this place! After being completely robbed by another salon (whos name will not be mentioned here)...I was ready to try something new. I walk in, they immediately acknowledge me by name and offer a glass of wine. So, that's a good start all in itself. Then, I get a great consultation by Liz. She asked me a lot of questions to help determine how she can help me achieve the look I'm going for. Questions like, how often to I wash my hair, what products do I use, do I use shaping tools/blow drier, etc. She wanted to be sure she didn't give me a high maintenance look if I'm a low-key kind of gal, and vice-versa. Then, she washed my hair (who doesnt love that?), and gave me the greatest cut I've had thus far in California. My hair has fabulous movement now, perfect long layers, and it is just gorgeous. I cant stop looking at it. (come on, I'm not vain. You know you do it too when you get a great cut/style!) Anyway, she never once pushed a product on me or shoved anything in my face to buy - she only told me about what she was putting in my hair as she was putting it in, and that's because I asked. I never felt like I was being told to buy something. Which, I really liked that. I will be buying products from there, but only because of the reputation of those certain products (Pureology) I'd heard before I ever came in, and not because she shoved them down my throat. I also liked the fact that it was a nice, family feel in there. It's an all women stylist group in there and they were all were kindly chatty with all of the customers - so it didnt feel like you just belonged to your stylist, it felt like everyone was involved in what was up in each other's lives...which, I really like that. It didnt feel snobby. I'm not saying everyone was in each other's business, but, you could join a conversation and not feel nosey. Ok, I realize I'm writing a novel now, but, it all boils down to the fact that I will most certainly be back and they have a very pleased new customer. Almost as soon as you enter A.S.K you feel like you've just entered a family party where everyone is laughing and talking and swapping celebrity gossip stories. Everyone knows you and remembers you. They usually have little snacks to enjoy and offer you coffee, water or WINE, which one time my sister had WAY too much of and left pretty drunk, but still... it makes it all super enjoyable! I absolutely love the way they have the salon set up. While you are getting your color put in and your hair washed/treated, everyone sits in a communal room, all around one table or at the sinks right next to the table, so it's not just you and your hairstylist, it's you and everyone else. So we all end up talking to one another and, in my case, butting into everyone else's stories/lives. I'm in heaven there. Even more important than the feeling I get when I get there is the feeling I when I leave there, which is so happy and satisfied. My stylist, Robin is THE BEST EVER! She was gifted by the hair color fairy with a natural ability to just know what will look great on your head. Sometimes I go in with a vague idea of what I want..maybe darker or lighter....but I can walk in and just say I have no idea, what do you think and without fail, Robin always gives me a great color! She knows I'm sort of bad about scheduling my appointment and knows to put my color in in a way that will look okay even when it's grown out a bit. I ALWAYS get compliments on my hair color. I leave A.S.K. happy because I love my hair and I love all of the girls that work there! You can always count on them to keep you entertained the entire time you're there. Have gone a couple of times & liked my cut but will not return due to flagrant product ignorance on the part of my stylist. There are challenges to growing your hair out long & I really need someone I can trust, an expert, to advise me since I have not had hair this long in 15 years. I was given a conditioning treatment & asked if it was similar to a hot oil treatment. My stylist was horrified, having assumed that "hot oil treatment" was basically deep-frying your hair in scalding oil & told me never to do it because it would burn my hair. Just to give the benefit of the doubt I asked if she meant a chemical burn....she didn't. This was not the only poor display of product knowledge either so I had to go. Too bad cause the cuts were good, but still 2 stars for the ill-informed product-pushing. Oh, and also I had never had split ends before that "conditioning" treatment (which my stylist admitted would FRY your hair if left on for just a minute too long) but I sure had plenty right afterwards! I have nothing but good things to say about ASK! I have been going here for about 5 years now and getting my hair done by Robin. This is my first time writing a review on yelp and I knew I had to write about this hair salon first. I always love how my hair color and hair cut look when I go in, I have never had a bad experience. I have gotten tons of compliements and people have literally stopped be on the street to ask me where I get it done or if I even get it done bc it looks so natural! I enjoy going in not just bc I get great looking hair but also bc everyone that works there is so friendly and accommodating. They always ask you if you would like water or tea and make sure you have a magazine and are comfortable. As long as this place is around I will never go anywhere else to get my hair done. I've been coming here for quite some time and never got around to writing a review. The more I keep coming here, the more I love this place. When I moved to San Jose, I still make the trip to the salon monthly. The ambiance and the staff is great. They really know their stuff and never pressure me into buying this or that for my hair. Anyway, everyone here is great: Athena and Shelly (the owners) and Lizzie and Robyn and Cari. It is such a happy place with such a positive vibe, which you don't always find in a salon. [Read: no bitchy backstabbing stylists here!]. I've had a zillion haircuts here, and just started getting my hair colored last year. They always give you what you ask for in regards to cut & color (it really DOES help to bring in a picture, believe me!) and don't push the products on you like some other places do. I'm growing my hair out long (again!) from a cute bob, so I don't visit as often as I used to, but each trip to ASK is like spending the afternoon at an upscale spa. read more

I'll start off by saying this place used to be 5-stars. I loved my first stylist that used to fly up from LA a week or two every month then Lizzie was GREAT. However, lately everything has gone downhill in a major way. My last few cuts have been sloppy and uneven. The final straw was the appearance of a cowlick after my last cut that had never been there before and hasn't been back since. Also, the previously friendly service has changed to stoic, business-like and boring. Who doesn't like to gossip with their stylist? From the moment you walk in you will instantly be greeted with the warmest smile or hello and feel instant connection to the place. Even though the establishment is quite spacious their furniture has been placed to create a perfect flow so that no matter where you are in the salon it feels perfectly comfortable. Judging from the clean countertops and shiney cleaned floors their establishment is well maintained even the bathroom is nicely scented with fresh smells from their oil diffuser. The paper towels I have to add are wonderful and absorb the water very well after hand washing. I pay attention to details because it truly means that they care. They even have snacks and coffee too while you wait as your hair is being colored.. It's no wonder that this establishment has clients as long as 15years and on. I love the girls here and they all work hard and are detailed with their work. They have continuous education to keep up to date with the fashion and trends. They really have fun at work. They all care about the business as a whole and take pride in their work. The girls have all been together since as long as I've known them and that was since 2005 and that in itself says a lot. Of course they have worked together even longer but i have only known them for so long. To end this review with another nice note you really can't go wrong. You'll love them all. It's family here. I love everything about this salon and look forward to my monthly appointments with Robin. It's like home...where I'm comfortable, welcomed and so well taken care of. It's a fun environment with lots of laughter and joy. I have never been happier with the way my hair has been cared for (by Robin). After 5 years of searching for a new stylist, I finally found a fantastic one here! My former stylist of 6 years finally retired and as a result, I was left scouring the Bay Area for someone who could cut my hair just right. I'm particular about my layers and they do it perfectly here. In addition, my color is very hard to get right but ASK was able to get the right formula. I'm extremely pleased with their customer service, friendliness and graciousness. Their prices are reasonable and not over top. No pretentious attitudes here which is an added plus. a dirty blonde by nature, i decided back in october that it might be fun to try being a brunette. fun time is over. instead of doing brown the right way, i did box color (never the same one twice...) and the result after 6 months was a ashy chocolate color at the bottom, a terrible brassy auburn on top and my natural color at the roots. i hated walking out of the house. after a referral from someone i trust, i made an appointment with Liz for 10 o'clock this morning. She's a total sweetheart and from the second i plopped down into her chair, i knew i was gonna be just fine. She decided that stripping the color and re-dying it would be too harsh on my hair and she didnt want to run the risk that my hair might not take kindly to the stripping, resulting in that lovely orange color you see on people who bleach their hair sometimes. she instead suggested heavy blonde highlights (more and more each visit until i was completely blonde again) Liz really knows her $h!t. I basically sat down and said "make me happy" without much more direction. And she totally did. My hair now looks freaking fantastic. She takes her time, is thorough and explains each step of the process, as well as whats going on your hair at every turn. Basiclly, shes awesome and you wont be disappointed with your end result. In addition to Liz, the salon is wonderful. all the stylists are super friendly. its nicely designed, they offer you beverages and even have a little trail mix bar. they provide you with a smock to change into so you wont get dye/hair/product on your clothing. and if you're willing to walk a few blocks, they are close enough to residential area that you dont have to worry about feeding meter while enjoying your time inside. read more

I've been interested in getting feather extensions for awhile, and this turned out to be the best place to get them! I called them early one afternoon, and was disappointed that they were booked for the day. The receptionist offered to call mr if anyone cancelled, and sure enough, they were able to fit me in. They sit you down and show you all the colors they have available, and they're organized by warm, cool and bright colors. They're super patient about letting you look at different colors and positions clipped into your hair before they finally secure the feathers with a bead. $10 bucks a feather, and if you save your feathers once they grow out they'll put them back on for $5. I have never encountered a salon that has such a warm and friendly feeling to it like ASK does. Everyone is so friendly and enviting and really dedicated to making you feel satisfied with your hair. While you might find yourself there for an hour or two or more (especially if there is coloring involved), they are really taking the time to do it just right and give your hair the care that it needs. I am incredibly difficult about my hair, and in the past have left every salon I'd been to somewhat disappointed. However, after leaving my appointment with Athena I was genuinely happy with my outcome. She took my suggestions, incorporated her own touch, and made sure to check in with me each step of the way to make sure I was happy. Because I am a college student, I cannot pay to get my hair colored every 2 months, so Athena applied the color in a way that will look perfectly natural as it grows out. The color compliments my natural color, and the cut is easy to maintain and frames my face. In terms of the salon, all of the women who work there are incredibly kind and I loved the way everyone in the salon talked to together. Before leaving, Athena told me that if I was in anyway unhappy with my hair that I could come back in and she would fix it to my liking. I have been going to A S K from the day it opened. I am still a customer! Just today I received a whirlwind of compliments regarding my Brazilian Blow out (natural hair straightner that lasts 10-12 weeks). The team at A S K is amazing, talented, and well trained. Athena Kabitsis, owner, has made a point of keeping her team "in" with the latest styles, trends and newest cutting and hair styling techniques. I have had my hair cut by Lizzie, Cari, Shelly, Robin, and Athena...all the stylists are fabulous. The best part is they work together and they all know my hair, so I don't have to wait for a specific person; I am comfortable with all the stylists. I have two small children, and my time there is my sanctuary. The stylists are always friendly, funny and accomodating. They are amazing colorists, AMAZING. Seriously, I can't say enough about how much I love my color and my new straight, sleek and healthy hair! I have to put my two cents regarding product pushing.....This has NEVER been my experience. If your hair is damaged or your wondering what products their using, of course they are going to tell you... I mean the goal is for you to maintain your great look at home! I lived in Southern California for a brief time, and let me tell you, I had stylists just take things over to the register after innocently asking what the product was and how it was used.. This has never happened at ASK. For awhile, my hair was getting really oily (the day after I washed it, or even the same day). Lizzie recommended baking soda (not some expensive shampoo or other product, baking soda)!! As weird as that sounds, it worked! Hair products are expensive wherever you go, but at this salon they will honestly advise you on what you need and don't need. There were lots of times when I asked about a product and I was told, "no you don't need that"... ASK is a GREAT place to get the look you want, relax and have some fun girl time! We were VERY disappointed with the lack of professionalism at ASK and the poor quality of their work. Cari did my color and my two teenage daughters for quite a few years as well as our haircuts. As time went on, her work got worse and worse. Each time I went in to get my hair colored, about every 7 weeks, I was never sure what I would walk out with. I was too lazy to find another salon and just put up with the poor work each time trying to convey to Cari what I wanted for color and each time walking out unhappy. The last straw though, was a combination of leaving a whole section of hair uncolored on the back of my younger daughter's head and frying the underside (product left on too long) of my older daughter's hair. When I called Athena (owner) to let her know what had happened, she defended her employee and made one excuse after another. She wanted us to come back and use a different stylist since they were like a "family" and there would be no hurt feelings. She stated her personal fees were too high for us but didn't tell me what those fees were. Not sure why she would think we wouldn't pay her price. Unbelievable that the owner would not do whatever it takes to make things right and try to keep clients. I referred a personal trainer who was looking for a hair stylist to Cari and she in turn referred one of her clients to Cari. Both were extremely dissatisfied with Cari's work after using her a couple of times and no longer go to ASK. I let Athena know that it wasn't only us 3 that were not satisfied and this makes a total of 5 clients who will no longer be using her salon. I can only imagine how many other clients have chosen not to return to ASK. Athena didn't seem to care about losing clients and was definitely not willing to go the extra mile to make things right by any of us. The stylists need to spend more time paying attention to the service they are performing and less time chit chatting your ear off. Double booking also seems to be the norm which leaves the client spending way more time in the chair than necessary and contributes to the reason for the poor quality of work. We have since found another salon, by referral from a happy client of that salon, and are extremely happy and satisfied with the work and professionalism of every stylist we have used. I know walking in that I will walk out with exactly what I want. ASK is a middle of the road salon trying to come across as high end. The stylists are really good at talking with you, but very poor at "hair" skills to have a client walk out feeling good about their hair. I definitely do NOT recommend ASK Artistic Destination Inc for any type of hair service!! read more
