I am new to this area of beauty care, (a late bloomer, didn't even start waxing untill I was 50) and she is an excellent introduction because eTANYA has an excellent set up within the salon, she's clearly skilled and up-to-date on what's available, and she is easy to communicate with about the different treatments. Absolutely wonderful! The customer service was nothing short of amazing! The staff was approachable and friendly. I had originally called and was given an appointment for the next week, but a few hours later I got a call back and they stated they had an opening for the next day with Irina. I took it and I am so happy that i did. She was patient with me as we tried to figure the best color and tone, since was very hesitant on what I wanted. After a little back and forth we finally got it right. I couldn't be happier. I've been coming to Strands for about 9 years now and have had three different colorists/stylists during that period due to a change in life event (marriage, babies, etc). All three have been wonderful and have understood my personal preferences. I've also seen a few different stylists in between for emergency blow outs or while they are covering for vacations, maternity leave etc. I've never been disappointed. Jen is my third stylist and I couldn't be happier! She is incredibly efficient, prompt, knows my preferences and she's all kinds of fun! She a wonderful colorist and isn't afraid to challenge me when I come in with an idea that she knows I'll likely regret soon after (I'm ready for bangs, let's go short!!!)which I really, really appreciate! I have such a great time when I go to the salon, it's a great environment where everyone knows your name and I always walk out feeling fantastic which is the just the best! Today was my first time at Stands and I can't say enough good things about the entire experience. Upon arrival, they were very prompt, taking my temperature and offering me a beverage with in seconds. I quickly filled out a few forms because I am a new client but they were easy and quick. Absolutely love this place. I'm a regular customer and have been coming here for at least a few years. What do I love about Strands? They do great hair color and cuts. They will customize color to your liking. I'm allergic to most hair dyes and they found brands that don't make me break out! The hair cuts are flattering and always make me look good and youthful. They use good quality shampoo & conditioner and dyes. When they schedule appointments, I don't have to wait and they are super efficient and don't try to squeeze in a ton of other people in between my hair color treatment and haircut. I am usually in and out in roughly 2 hours, including the color. My last two hairdresser places took at least 3 hours so Strands is a huge time saver. The staff is very precessional and super nice. Everyone from the schedulers to the hairdressers (I use Sylvia but I've also had Jeannie who is also good) are excellent and care a lot about the customers and take care to try their best to cater to preferences. The premises are very clean and pleasant. I appreciate that they have been very safe during Covid when they are permitted to be open. They follow all safety regulations. My whole family comes here! I am SUPER UPSET AND MORE after looking forward to a haircut for which I grew my hair over 12 years. This morning, my hair was 34 inches long, down to my hips, grown to get the long layered cut I have always wanted. I read Strands for Hair website including their notations of on-going training, coupled with great reviews on other websites. While I don't expect perfection during training, I don't expect a hack job that reduced my hair from 34 inches to a 14 inch mop top that makes me look much older and fatter than when I walked in the salon. I informed the scheduler of the length of my hair when I made an appointment for a long layered hair cut to enable the hair dresser to allow enough time to cut it properly, yet the hairdresser was not aware until I sat in her chair. I immediately showed the hairdresser, Mackenzie, a couple of pictures of what I wanted. I explained to Mackenzie and her trainer Jeffrey, this is my last chance to wear long hair, given my age, and wanted to enjoy it, before I have to get a short, mature haircut. I specifically stated I DO NOT want the plain, straight, flat hair I have worn much of my life. Jeffrey stayed close while repeatedly requesting a donation of my locks. They will accept any type of hair for "Wigs for Kids." I donated 8 inches, after which Jeffery was immediately far less involved. Mackenzie never said anything about not intending to produce the cut I requested from a photograph, and she knowingly left me expecting. Mackenzie then proceeded to give me the exact cut I had described -- emphatically stating I did not want. Mackenzie was to cut my hair to a length near my elbow. Unfortunately, my hair was cut to my shoulders in a mostly straight cut that makes middle aged women look older and everyone look fatter in the face. My hair is now only 14 inches long, straight across the back / looking like a mop head, and too short to get even a slight version of what I requested and believed I would receive this morning. When pulled up into a bun thick strands of hair poke out a couple of inches all over the bun. All along, I discussed interviewing for high level finance jobs, while unemployed. Now I will need to dedicate more time to styling my hair and wear clips as when I was a child, to prepare for job interviews because Mackenzie knowingly deceived me. It is night and I still really HATE the too short, plain, flat, unflattering, FAT ENHANCING" cut I received. Of course, I wasn't able to see Mackenzie's cuts as she hacked my hair. I was told and written on the mirror is that I would get a LONG layered cut, which is in the title of the two photographs I had shown Mackenzie. While my mop top is layered, the layers are ALL at the end of the straight - straight across my back and straight hanging haircut. Mackenzie planned to make this cut knowing it was nothing close to what I was expecting from the 2 pictures I had showed her when I sat in her chair, at the cost of many years growth. Both pictures have v-shaped cuts, but yet I was left with a mop head. My hair is now too short, to attempt to get a little of what I requested and expected, at a different hair salon. I can clip the sides looking as if I'm trying to be a child when I don't need to look down which is barely ever, and make a 1950s Barbie Doll pony tail to keep the mop out of my face. I hope Barbie's 1950s ponytail passes for middle aged womens style now that it's 2020. By the time my hair is long enough to get a short version of the look I wanted, it is likely to be grey, wiry, nasty, and course on top. In addition, a major high school class reunion will have passed with this look that I hate and don't know how to improve without a pixie cut as cold weather sets in. NO ONE APPRECIATES BEING DECEIVED FOR EXPLOITATION, OR WANTS TO LOOK OLDER AND FATTER!!!!! The senior hairdressers who I expected to prevent such a hack job, Jeffrey and Lisa, intervened but way too late. I am super upset with your decision Mackenzie to selfishly deceive me. I am posting your review in public, because you were so cold as to deceive me, followed by your cavalier dismissal of your gross misconduct with your audacious response to Jeffrey, and never apologizing to me. It will be years before I can get the cut for which I had grown my hair out and ALWAYS wanted. By then the top will likely be gray, course... Mackenzie, either get honest with the clients and humble yourself when you make mistakes, delivering what they expect, and accepting them going elsewhere after you state you will provide a different cut, -- or find a new career. You'll never recover from deceiving clients - especially when you leave it too short to get it re-cut into something they can enjoy. Your shop is in a most affluent city near top Universities, so you can expect your clientele to be able to explicitly express themselves well on Social Media. read more

BEWARE!! Bridgette touched up my eyebrow tattoo that I had 10 years ago and was very pleased with. After agreeing upon look and shape she arbitrarily free handed a second set of eyebrows on my face. First she blamed the shape of my face. Then she Became apologetic and paid to have One laser removal treatment. She then became aggressive and stated that I had instructed her to do the eyebrows like this. And that I liked them. Wow. All I can say is I'm grateful that I have the funds to have these professionally removed. It'll take me another the year of treatments every 2 months and upwards of $1500 to clean up her error. Where is the integrity in this world. Please be very concerned should you choose to book an appointment with Bridgette. I have been going to Strands for years. This review is not in any way for the stylist who did my hair, Jenna. It was the first time having her take care of my hair and she was professional and did a great job. My regular stylist move out of the area. This is the first time back to my hair salon since COVID. I read what the owner said they were doing to implement safety procedures and felt somewhat comfortable booking an appointment. I had highlights and needed to be put under the dryer to help the color process. There was one other person sitting in the area but she and I definitely had distance between us. The owner brings another client and sits her right next to me. What? I am pretty sure she asked her client if it was OK for her to sit in between the other client and me. Which her client approved, since she sits down. I immediately got up and moved out of the area. What is so frustrating is that Lisa didn't care to ask me if I was OK with someone sitting a foot away from me. How can she be following COVID guidelines in doing this? I do understand that trying to run a salon during these times is difficult but to just assume I'm OK with someone sitting so close to me is ridiculous. I was clearly upset and Lisa didn't even seem to care. She just went off to get my stylist. I find that behavior upsetting for an owner of a business In leaving, Jenna did tell me in the future I could book an early appointment where there are less clients in the salon. I've been coming to this salon for about 3 years. My stylist is Lisa, the owner. She's very professional and experienced. It didn't take long for her to understand the direction I wanted to go, and to decide how best to achieve it. She's also an expert with color! Hence I'm happy and regularly get compliments from my boyfriend and co workers about the style and highlights. On top of the awesome skills there's a wonderful front office. Glenda is personable, excellent at scheduling, payment processing is efficient. This salon is beautiful inside, parking is ample, and green conscious products are available. I came today to strands for the very first time. The atmosphere and the people were so sweet the place was clean and the receptionist offered me water (plain or with lemon) it was good. They take a survey on your hair. They asked what kind of shampoo and Conditioner i use, when was my last cut, and if I'm taking any kind of medication and etc... the employees were so nice the lady that cut and styled my hair was Bobbi she just started working 4 weeks ago and she was fantastic, She trimmed my hair due to split ends and a little dry, but after leaving the salon I looked marvelous darling !!!! I recently came to see Briggette for my eyebrows to see if she could correct the color I had from a previous tattoo that had faded to a reddish-pink color.At the consultation she explained to me what was going on with my shape and what she was going to do. She is very knowledgeable. At the time of my appointment Bridgette applied a numbing cream that allowed me to be pain-free and just relax while I get my eyebrows fix. Loved Sylvia!! I am always hesitant to get my hair cut. I have that sort of curly, but mostly frizzy hair and while I can wear it curly or straight most people don't understand how to cut it. I had to have a good six inches loped off as my hair was super long and I hadn't had it trimmed in forever. I am really picky about my hair and after trying out high end salons all I found was I was overpaying for 15 minute haircuts that didn't work with my hair. Yelp to the rescue! I decided to look for somewhere in San Mateo and found Strands For Hair. The building it is in looks kinda old and run down, but the salon is really nice and spacious on the inside. When I called for an appointment the lady on the phone was super friendly and helpful. I made my appointment and had the same friendly service when I checked in. Now to Sylvia. If you have curly unruly hair she really understands what works. She offered suggestions for me, but was never pushy and made sure she understood what things I did or did not want. She really took her time and I didn't feel like just another customer like some salons. Most amazing of all when she dried my hair she actually managed to blow dry it straight, something the previous two salons attempted, but gave up on and used flat irons. She showed told me what kind of products I could use to help the process along when I am doing it, but again never pushed. I walked out with a great cut, well styled hair that feels amazing. Last night I reached that point, you know the one, that point where your hair just annoys you. A change is necessary, it's been a little (or maybe a lot) too long since you last submitted yourself to a good stylist and his or her scissors. I was super lucky that Jen had a 6pm appointment available, so I raced over and cried "HELP!" I have been doing my poor hair no favors over the past year, and it showed. I thought we were going to have to whack a whole bunch of length , but she totally took off about 2 inches and my hair is totally restored. I have been going here for years. I have ALWAYS walked out very happy, feeling like a "super model". Mani, pedi, cut, color, etc. I have never been disappointed. I wanted to share an experience I had there last week that really upset me.......... While I was in the chair getting my roots done, I couldn't help but overhear a woman at the front desk raising hell over her haircut. Let me say that I thought she looked AMAZING! She complained and complained and even went as far as to threaten the woman at the front desk that she would "leave a bad review on YELP if she has to pay for her service". As it turns out.....there are many people who pull this crap when they are looking to get something for free. They use the power of a bad review to try to get away with not paying for services. I really wanted to like this salon, but you pay way too much for very poor services. I went to get my nails done (pink/white UV extensions) and the people here are very friendly. Everyone there greeted me and made sure I was comfortable, including my nail tech. We chitchatted through the entire process, however, when she was done I could tell she hadn't been doing this long, or was just not very good. You could both see, and feel, the ridges where her tool had been as she didn't use a block to buff my nails. The nails were uneven in length and thickness and after about 4 days were lifted off to the point that I just peeled them all off. Mind you I paid $60 for this service. I can't say anything about the hair salon as I've never been here for my hair but I can assure you I will NEVER be back for my nails. read more

The people are very friendly but the lady doing my nails did a bad job. I asked for a white tip and she wasnt able to get the white tip straight. It came out all different thickness, one side thinner, one side thicker. Not enough polish, you can see in some spots through my nail. I dont know if the girl isnt very good, still training, or if maybe nails just isnt one of the strenghts in this full service salon. The maricure cost $20, not a lot, but I paid the same thing in another place a few weeks before and the gel color was smooth, the other girl straighten my nails, clean them, didnt leave nail polish on my finger, very precise. This place looks very nice, unfortunately they do not have a trained professional on their nail section. I was thinking going and asking to get them fix but im scare im gonna end up with another bad manicure! read more

I was referred to her by a friend and Very very happy that I took her up on her referral. I don't like change to my hair I'm always so nervous about cutting it and doing something different and at the same time I'm tired of looking the same year after year. NATALIA was AWESOME!!
