I have been to Selena before and she did a good job then. This last time was horrible! She accepted my appointment after showing her the pic of what I wanted and my current hair. Went to my appointment at 9am. During my time there, she took in other appointments while I waited. Then she got overwhelmed and brought help in. Heard after the help was the one who does facials, not hair. After hours of bleaching and dying finally, she sends me away with the lady to rinse my hair. This lady washed my hair twice with shampoo, sat me back and then tried to make something better than the mess they left me with. I did not leave until after 4pm!! Not only that, but my hair was fried and wet. As you can see you the after, it is nothing like I asked for. She had the nerve to try to charge $450, but after she knew I was not happy at all, she charged me $350 for pink & brown fried hair. I had reached out to her and she told me to come back in a week to recolor and she would charge me another $90. I told her NO THANK YOU!!!! Never shall I go there again. She should have no charged me at all and there was not even an apology, knowing how I uphappy I was. read more

I typically do not write too many reviews, but Selina deserved a review. I came with my boyfriend who wanted to get his hair textured. We showed her a picture and she instantly knew what we were hoping to get. We were a little concerned as his hair was a bit on the short side for a perm but she tried it and it came out great. It took her longer because the hair was too short and kept slipping but she didn't give up. Since I was waiting I thought I would ask if she could fit me in as well. I told her a couple of things I was looking for and a sample picture. It came out better than I was expecting. We both were nervous as we haven't exactly found the best person who understands our hair wants and needs, but Selina surprised us with her skills. I will be back for my next trim. read more

Selina is an amazing hair stylist. She is very dedicated to her job and is committed to making your hair look just how you want it. Her attitude is friendly and professional. The salon is decently-sized and well-kept. I went in to get my long, thick, dark hair bleached and dyed red (which is an extremely complicated process) and she did it beautifully. She worked on my hair from 5:30-9:00pm, 2 hours after closing. She even took the time to style it before I left. In the end, my hair was soft and still smells good a few days later! I was so worried about it smelling like bleach but Selina made sure it didn't. Selina is so committed and dedicated to her job. I highly recommend this salon! read more

So...I was open with what the stylist (I'm guessing Becky?) did with my hair, except that it should be at least shoulder length and provide some volume due to my hair falling flat. She suggested layers, which I agreed to, and then asked me to take my glasses off (to be fair, she probably didn't know I was blind as a bat without glasses on and couldn't tell what was happening to me during the cutting process). When I finally got my vision back, I saw a very short (if you pull the very back strands of hair, it might *barely* brush my shoulder, but everything else was layered much shorter) hairdo that was flat ironed into something that resembled my dad's long Beatles shag. I still gave a benefit of a doubt though, as I know sometimes when I get home and re-style it things look a lot better, so I didn't immediately break down in a flood of tears. I knew my initial reaction was right though, when I came home and my husband shrieked "WTH happened to your hair?!" and Facebook friends who viewed a picture of the haircut could only muster up apologies and hopes that my pregnancy hormones make it grow out faster. Krystal O. commented that she got a lot more cut off than she expected as well...so maybe this is something that happens a bit at this salon. The people who worked here seem very nice though so I added an extra star. Perhaps if I was very, very specific about what I wanted it would have been fine (although I did mention shoulder length and it's certainly not shoulder length). But with my current haircut, I've had to buy a bunch of new hair products and accessories, and spend an extra half hour every day trying to style it into something that won't make me bawl when I see it. Maybe I will fall in love with it in a few more months! read more

This review is for men's haircut only. I cant say this place is worth $25 for men's haircut. I can probably get something similar or better with $10. My hair was cut by a guy who sorta followed what i told me. However, i dont see much of the haircut skills and my hair ended up being terrible. The shop is not very organized either. Don't ever come here!!! 1. You walk in and nobody evens acknowledges you! They pretend not to see you standing there, even though their stations are all within 3 feet of the reception desk! Finally a young child comes up and just looks at you. 2. They have a dog there! "State Board of Cosmetology and the Board of Consumer Affairs have specific Rules and Regulations stating that no animals are allowed in a salon at any time." 3. I watched the lady on the right side, in the back chair, cough about 15 times, literally RIGHT IN THE FACE of her elderly client!! Seriously???? 4. My childs haircut took 5 MINUTES and it wasn't even straight! 5. They do NOT soak the combs in the Qats sterilization jars between the clients!! Lice is huge right now and they could be spreading that so easily!! (You WILL see the Qats jars full, WAY ABOVE their stations though) 6. The floor was SO disgusting and had so much dust piled up in the corners. They obviously don't clean that place! OH....and she also slapped the poor LITTLE puppy in the face 3 times because he wouldn't stay seated in the one hair dryer chairs that had a PEE PAD on it!! DISGUSTING on all levels!!! Selena has been cutting my hair for a long time. I live 100 miles away, and do not want anyone else to cut my hair. I am an Orthopedic Surgeon, and it is important for my hair to look good. Selena is an expert professional. She is also a wonderful, friendly person. I would recommend that any or the clients of the previous owner continue coming here. I certainly will. Despite some moments by customers of the previous' owner's to the contrary, Selena's I Salon is immaculate. One complaint of one customer of the previous owner was that the place is dirty, and that a dog was present. That report does not claim that the dog was not well mannered, or belligerent, and does not mention, or claim whether or not that, either the complainant may have some mental health or psychological problem or other re-existing problem exists. The comments from clients of the previous owner are usually positive, and the previous clients have told me that the previous owner was wonderful. Selena is wonderful, too. Check this place out. Came here with my mom on Sunday and we were both able to walk-in and ask if they were available for us to get our haircuts. Immediately, Becky said she was able to see us but my mom mentioned that we would come back in about an hour after eating lunch and Becky was accommodating to that as well! Once we walked in after lunch time, Becky almost immediately began on my hair first. I told her I just wanted a trim but she ended up cutting off a little more than I wanted.. but I guess it was for my own good anyways since my hair was pretty damaged. Overall, the haircut wasn't something that I hated which is why I am giving it 4 stars. Also, the other guy there was doing "ombre" on another client and he was super nice about it when I asked him questions on pricing and if I wanted to go in to touch up my ombre. This place is under new management, and I decided to give it a try but I would have to say that the haircuts are pretty poor. If you just want a basic straight cut, then come here. If you want something more with layers or a bob, don't come here because they don't know how to do it. Instead they try to convince you that you don't know what looks good. This is like an expensive Supercuts. And you're better off going to Supercuts. Ive jumped from salon to salon for most of my adult life looking for the perfect barber and found that Selina is definitely the best and provides the most consistent haircuts time after time. I followed her here from the old salon she used to work at in daly city. Even tho San Mateo is quite the drive from San Francisco where I live, its definitely worth it. Selina deserves 5 stars. I came in for a haircut with Josh. He did a great job when he was washing my hair he noticed my neck was tense and gave me a brief neck massage. He works really hard . After my cut he curled my hair, he definitely went the extra mile to make sure the customer was happy. The only drawback was that he cut it a bit short but other than that great place to go get your haircut. read more

I got my hair cut by Becky here a few months ago and I was not particularly impressed . I asked to have ends trimmed, layers re-shaped and side bangs re-cut. I could swear one side was properly cut while the other side was barely touched, and the salon was empty aside from me so I can't even attribute the sloppy work on time constraints. The bangs were cut pretty bluntly with regular old scissors ( there was a pair of thinning shears of the counter, but she didn't want to use them even though I asked for them and every haircutter I've had in ny has always used them for texturizing bangs). I actually went home and trimmed them myself in the way I've seen it done ... A good waste of an hour outside of the haircut itself). I really wanted to like this place since it's close to home and I don't want to crawl through traffic to millbrae or Santa Clara for a decent Asian haircut. For $30-ish, it was not really worth the price especially since there was no wash, no blow dry, no styling. Sadness!! read more

It's time to update my review! I been coming here for years and it's still great! Every couple of months, I dye my hair or just tone it so my blonde doesn't get brassy. Every time I leave this salon, I get compliments on my hair. I went through all the natural colors and they turned out beautiful, every single time. These folks aim to please. Super reasonable prices, very sweet, easygoing people, nice atmosphere, no pretense, just a nice, comfy neighborhood shop. I love that I get to watch TV while Josh works on my hair (each station has its own little TV). Josh is great. He knows his stuff; he is exceedingly customer service oriented and the best new for me is that they are open on Sundays (my only day off). Josh has an artistic sensibility that I find almost non-existent in most hair salons. He is professional, competent, and personable. He does gray touchups, highlights, low-lights, and cuts.
