I have been going here for almost 20 years. This is this first time I ever missed an appointment and it was due to an emergency. I apologized and asked if there was anyway to come in later that day and they said they were fully booked. I went online and saw they did have several openings in the afternoon the same day. I called back and was able to be seen. I was still charged a late cancellation fee despite it being an emergency and never having canceled or missed an appointment before. I come here every month to see Demi for my eyebrows!!! She's a gem and she's so amazing at what she does. I'm always happy after I leave because she truly brightens my day and makes me look AMAZING. Tl;dr - Jeannette Walton has taken wonderful care of me and my sensitive skin. This review is several months overdue. I've been going to see Jeannette for about a year now and she has been more than incredible. My skin is extremely sensitive - acne and eczema prone, both oily and dry - and I've struggled with it since I was a child. I initially went to help lighten the scarring leftover from the last few years of bad acne, and we have been doing the Silk Peel pore clarifying facials almost monthly to help clear out my pores, lighten scars, and improve skin texture. The photos show for themselves how much it has improved, and I genuinely never thought I'd see the day with such clear, smooth skin. This past couple months I have been dealing with eczema and dermatitis flaring up on my neck and face, and Jeannette has been extremely gracious throughout. She goes the extra mile to diagnose and treat my skin every time she sees me, and sympathizes with the struggle of having sensitive skin. Today I walked in with a major flare-up - red, irritated, flaking face, and Jeannette shifted our service to an AB Facial Ultra Gentle + 30 min LED therapy, and somehow my face was no longer angry, and the skin was supple and smooth by the time I walked out. We were both in awe. At this point I trust Jeannette 110%. She always gives great aftercare instructions, and she has given me so many great recommendations to improve my health overall; reminding me to drink water, manage stress, and she even recommended I see a doctor when she noticed my new ear piercing was causing some subtle swelling on one side of my face (I did, and it was definitely infected). Also, she's super chill and just fun to talk to. She has never pressured me to buy products from the shop, but everything she has used on me has worked so well that I often buy them there anyway so that she can get the commission. Overall The Estheticians is extremely cleanly and Covid-safe. Their Covid protocols and care were the reason I started coming here when I needed to find an Esthetician during the pandemic. I got very lucky landing with Jeannette on my first visit. Everyone who works here is so polite and professional, and going into my appointments is always so easy even on the most anxious of days. The service I received was the "HydraFacial Signature." It's a must have! Treat yourself, don't cheat yourself. It's worth it. I like The Estheticians, but there's a couple reasons I won't be returning. First it's far away. I've found a waxing place that's much closer to the heart of San Mateo for cheaper. $25 for a brow wax is a lot when you have to Uber/Lyft out both ways on top of it. I also didn't love my last two waxes. Don't get me wrong, they weren't bad - but the $15 wax I got at my hair salon was so much closer to what I was looking for and on top of that I can walk to them. Finally, I hate their online presence. I've re-set my password at least 5 times and I can never set up an appointment online, I have to call each and every time. The one time I managed it, they still called me to confirm the visit and didn't realize I was already a repeat customer. With my new salon I can easily set up an appt via a quick Yelp message. I'm also able to leave a tip on my credit card when I check out (unlike The Estheticians who only takes tips in cash). I liked my visits to The Estheticians, but I likely won't be back. I just got a facial here after haven't visited in over 3 years and WOW! I forgot about how amazing the experience is here. From the front desk receptionist welcoming me, to the great service from my esthetician Courtney (she's the best!), I don't think I can get a facial anywhere else in the Bay Area. I got the Signature Facial, and when I met Courtney before getting started, she did an amazing job setting expectations for me for our appointment and made sure to talk about what I was looking for in my treatment/service that day. What I appreciated the most from her was that, even though I came scheduled for a Signature Facial, I told her that my budget can be higher than what I was paying for, but I left it up to her about what she thought I needed (extra products, add-on services, etc.). When we got started, she was able to examine my skin, and did not end up recommending more than what was needed (AKA she didn't unethically recommend something that would have had me spending more money)--that type of honesty to me already gains so much respect/trust in this establishment and with Courtney! Anyways, when it came to my actual treatment, she truly let me relax, talked minimally in the beginning, and then just did her thang... I straight up fell asleep during my appointment from the amazing product scents/her massage, I didn't want it to end :') Post treatment, my face was glowing and dewy and smelled good and was moisturized (I have dry skin)!!! You know, don't expect some crazy modern looking spa with marble walls and uppity vibes, BUT, do expect an extremely professional and clean environment with kind estheticians that truly have your best interest at heart/provide excellent service! I really recommend coming to the Estheticians and booking Natasha for waxing. My last waxing experience (elsewhere and years ago) was terrible, but Natasha made me feel so comfortable while doing an irreproachable job. I got an underarm, bikini line, and lower leg combo in preparation for my wedding the following weekend. Even though I had shaved a little too recently, she got almost all my hair with the wax alone! She then went in with a tweezer and took her time finding and plucking any stray hairs. It was much less painful than I expected - and though I have sensitive skin, I was surprised to find I never developed any kind of irritation or ingrown hair. LOVE this place! I used to come here often when I lived in San Mateo, primarily for eyebrow waxes, but have always wanted to try other services. Every single person that I have interacted with here have all been so friendly, kind, and helpful. They have excellent customer service; I always felt 100% valued as a customer and treated really well. I have had several estheticians and got along with every single one of them. They were all amazing and all of my appointments went really well. This is customer service done right. I also really like the decor and how cozy this place feels. It's warm and welcoming, which is more my style compared to ultra modern, minimalistic type salons that feel too "cold" and uninviting. There is a dedicated parking lot as well, which is really convenient. I also really love their online booking system. I went to an appointment with Mary a week ago and they are a well oiled machine with their covid precautions. I completed a health survey an hour before my appointment sent to me via text message with a link. I waited in my car until I was called to come to the door, temperature was taken and Mary was wearing a mask and a face shield for extra protection. At the end of the appointment, I was charged with my card on file and exited through the door in the waiting room. I felt safe the entire duration of my appointment. I was looking forward to this facial and it ended being a disappointment and left with a scar! Ugh:( I booked a signature facial and was expecting to find solutions on how to improve my skin and I was a first time client too so on the intake form they give you an option if you want a more relaxed , help with a skin care routine or guidance on how to improve skin and i chose that option. I was expecting the esthetician to asks me Questions on my skin care routine, what I wanted to improve but nothing.it felt more like a relaxed facial which felt nice but not what I wanted. I did mention I needed some extractions and she agreed & felt a few bumps in between my brows and I believe she used a lancet to extract those blackheads but they were a bit stubborn and applied toooo much pressure that it left me with scars :( now I have to walk like this for weeks. Another thing I wish the esthetician would have done is tell me to what each product does throughout the facial. And at the end there was no product recommendation..I had to look out for products. This place might just be my new favorite place! I called in to get the Stress Buster Back & Neck Massage and they were prompt to pickup my call and schedule me in. They even let me know the best way to get there (don't exit on 3rd; exit on Peninsula) and to bring CASH to tip. I had the pleasure of Laura to attend my massage and she really hit the spots that needed to be unknotted and relaxed. She was soothing and definitely made me almost fall asleep from her magical hands. The place is also cute and clean and the receptionist is very friendly. I would definitely recommend this place especially since they take SpaWish/SpaFinder gift cards/certificate as payment! UPDATE 4/15/14: I came back here again but this time I got the 75 minute Deep Tissue massage with Laura and still the same 5-star experience! I've been trying out other masseuse around the San Mateo area and Laura seriously has the touch that makes you come back for more! I tried another place that offered a combo of Swedish, deep tissue, shiatsu, and hot stone massage which made me grit my teeth in pain in some parts and left me sore for days! I tried deep tissue with Laura despite my not so fantastic experience with deep tissue because I have lower back problems and Laura's firm touch didn't really hurt and I was only a little sore the 2nd day but I felt so much better on the 3rd which is how deep tissues work. Laura is definitely whom you're looking for if you want a truly heavenly massage! Although I'm a sucker for trying new places, I'm sure ill always return back to Laura cause she just sets the bar so high up there along with my relaxed body when she's done with me. I had heard of the The Estheticians for several years but never made my way over until last week. I was reserved with Mary who had an opening the day after I called. I was excited to say the least. Reception greeted me and escorted me to the lounge. I had my back to hallway. Behind me a bit later, a woman introduced herself and said she would be seeing my today. I thought it strange that the person speaking to my back didn't come around the chair to look at me when she spoke. We briskly walked over to her small room and she told me that I could put my things at the bench. Almost right away, Mary looked over my intake sheet and started firing off her questions. None of which I had the right answers to because even under her mask, I could see her facial expressions challenging my recollection. But seriously, WHO CARES who I saw at Spa Luxe and if I saw them five or ten year ago? And who care if they closed yesterday or ten years ago! How will those answers give me a wonderful facial today? They won't. I told her I wasn't feeling like this was going how I wanted it to, and she said "well I feel the same but let's move". Um no, let us not. I put my hand up and said I was done and this was a mistake to come. I don't care what reviews they have or will get (or who gives them for that matter) or what reputation they have, businesses lose their integrity with one encounter, as happened that day for me. I walked out and as Mary followed, and literally I had tears in my eyes and my voice was cracking from her making me feel so uncomfortable, I stopped in front of reception and had another exchange telling her that her behavior is atrocious and that I was done. I walked out the door and she followed me, closed the door so no one else would hear, and then when I explained that her demeanor was strange from the moment I walked in, she had the audacity to spew some babble ... something to the affect of "I think you're confused and seeing in me what you're actually projecting on to me". Are you serious? Who even speaks like that and what are you even saying? I got in my car and collected myself (still was crying and quite frankly in incredulous) and I drove away. I stopped a couple miles away, called and asked to speak with the Manager who was not on site but I was assured would call me Saturday. Crickets.
