It has a huge Willow Tree in front, a pond with ducks, a gazebo with a beautiful garden area and pond with fish, and is just so well done. We watched deer in the morning while we ate our breakfast! Lisa was so nice and took good care of us! Cookies when we arrived, a handwritten note, truffles in our room. Super friendly and helpful when we arrived. Every detail was so wonderful. There is a pool also but it was closed due to the weather being too cold but I'm sure it's amazing in the summer. Parking is good also. The inn is not too far from downtown and they offer a delicious breakfast as well. We had apple cider crème brûlée and sweet potato hash with chicken apple sausage. Good coffee too! Overall we really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back to this lovely and charming place!

And we've stayed in various places before, including one night with our son, as guests in his room. But, we're staying here, because he & his family, are staying here, for a meeting, so we decided as a family to gather together in Ashland for hubby's Diamond Year! We're staying for 3 nights, including breakfast. I should rate this hotel 3 stars, for the following reasons: 1. The minute we walked in, I noticed how small the room was! How small? You ask. When you bend down, to rinse your mouth, & spit on the sink, your butt hits the wall. 2. You hold the flusher for the toilet, about 15 seconds, for totally flush down. 3. Cleaning lady, opened our room, without knocking, after 8:00am. She probably thought we're downstairs having breakfast! She wasn't supposed to come clean or make up our bed, for the first 2 days. 4. Peep hole on the door, made for people 6'-7'. I'm 5'2" and it's past my head! 5. Headboard is noisy, when you move. 6. The desk chair creeks! The first time I was alone, and I sat on it, I thought, the room was haunted, or a squirrel was knocking on the roof. I'm not exaggerating! That's what the noise was, I didn't know it was from my chair, until hubby told me about it. 7. You give your breakfast ticket to the lady outside the door, and you take a plate & bowl back inside the room with food. The 2nd day, there was no protein, (bacon, no eggs, or sausage), the children had bread, potatoes, fruit. Hard boiled egg, they don't eat! 8. The juice glass or plastic, is about 3-4 sips, it's so small! If you want more, you have to bring your own container to get large serving, or frequently get up and refill your glass. 9. Breakfast, an additional $5, pay in the lobby. 10. Make up stain on the sheet. I'm giving this a 4 stars, for the following reasons: 1. The lobby, the garden, stained glass, wrought iron impressive! (Took lots of photos) 2. The stairs, & the elevator all conveniently located easy to find & access. Never crowded. 2. The tallest building in Ashland, you don't need a GPS, just look for the tallest building! 3. The 8th floor, (son's family room) they got the corner, is so much larger ours. My 2nd son and us, he's on the 8th floor, and us on the 4th floor, same street view. Our room is the smallest! :( 4. The chair by my bed, was comfortably soft. 5. Love all my pillows, covers, and towels. 6. Friendly staff. 7. Very very clean, including the rooms. 8. Convenient parking. 9. Views beautiful, mountains. 10. Room comfortable temperature. 11. Walking distance, up or down, and we're both old, (not used to walking but we did!) to many of the sights, restaurants, creeks, park, Japanese Garden, Lithium Park. 12. Additional Note from 2nd son #1: It was great that I could charge my car in their parking lot. That's very convenient! Extra Note from 2nd son: he could hear noise from the street, on the 8th floor. I didn't think we could hear anything from the street. Total: But I can't just give a 3 star or a 4 star, so it's really in between!

It is fragrance free, something that is almost impossible to find. You can find more info about that on their website. I think some of the products in the bathroom have natural fragrances, like the soap. The towels and sheets smell like no fragrance or perfume was involved in their washing. I am very sensitive to fragrances. They're very friendly and flexible about check-in. Breakfast is delicious, and they are flexible for allergen needs. I love staying here.

TLDR: overpriced, bad rooms and they will rip you off with hidden charges…read more The morning after checking in here, I was summoned to the front desk and very rudely informed I was being charged a $100 per night pet fee. This was not disclosed during booking, even though we specifically informed them we were traveling with a dog. While pet fees are common, $100/night is frankly predatory. My fiance and I found the bed to be uncomfortable and extremely small. The room listed a queen bed. When my fiance asked if was actually a queen, the hotel staff was rude and dismissive. We finally measured the bed with a measuring tape and found that it was a 53" full bed, not a 60" queen - very difficult for two people to sleep in. The hotel staff refused to acknowledge their error, though they did eventually move us to a vacant room with a larger bed for our last night. However, they also charged me another $72.80 for this pleasure without telling me why. At no point did they apologize or offer any other compensation or offer to waive their unreasonable fees. Beyond this, the rooms were dingy and not what I would expect at this price point. Winchester does make a good (though not amazing) breakfast, but it is not worth dealing with low quality rooms, rude staff and predatory hidden fees.

We had a small issue with a stuck armoire and the owners reacted quickly and were very helpful with this small issue. You share the old Victorian with other guests but it felt very safe at all times. The downstairs has some fun history of the building, the owners are lovely and the housekeeping staff did a great job with clean rooms before checkin. Note cleaning is not provided during the stay. Coffee and tea are out downstairs as well. It's a 10 minute walk in to town, which we enjoy, so there is no need to repark the car.

The service we received was warm and considerate. The various two pots were kept refilled with hot water and fresh water was poured for those who wished. I read several reviews of various hotels in Ashland before selecting the Bard's Inn for our weekend…read moregetaway, and I'm confident I made the right choice. A lot of the complaints that I had read stated that they felt the experience wasn't worth the price tag (our room's base rate was $209 for a Saturday night, plus an additional fee for our two dogs), which is normally more than I like to pay for a one-night stay anywhere, unless I am specifically seeking a fantastic...nay, outlandish hotel experience. I don't travel for the hotels (and I don't understand the people who do), except on very special occasions. That said, when we rolled up to the Bard's Inn, I was initially a bit trepidatious. It looked like a motel, albeit one splashed with a medieval-adjacent coat of paint. I didn't realize at first that the hotel is spread across three buildings, each on different corners of the same intersection, with different room types in each building. While we ended up in the motel-like section (where the pool, office and dining hall are located), the other two look more like apartments, so depending on your booking, your room style may vary wildly. We checked in, and were given a end room on the bottom floor, a huge bonus for us, with two pups in tow! Our room was spacious enough for two adults, a teen and two dogs, without feeling cramped. Décor: functional without being fancy. TV had DirectTV, which is sluggish and unresponsive on its best day, but we barely used it. Mini-fridge included in the cabinet came in handy for insulin that needed to be refrigerated. Continental breakfast in the morning hits all the standard notes, but it will be ravaged by 9:00am, so get their early! Pool is open from 7:00am (what?! awesome!) until 10:00pm, and is a nice place to cool off on a balmy yet humid summer evening. The beds were firm yet very comfortable, the pillows downy soft and wonderful, among some of the best I've encountered at any hotel; my wife slyly suggested attempting to cram the mattress and pillows into the back of our SUV to take home, but I was able to dissuade her...barely. Where the Bard's Inn truly shined, however, were in the places that mattered most: customer service and...what's the real estate cliché? Oh yes: location, Location, LOCATION. No other hotel has such convenient access to the heart of Ashland's downtown area, and finding another pet-friendly hotel pushes you out even further. You can't ask for a better location, so I'm not terribly surprised to have to pay extra for it. As for customer service, each staff member we interacted with, at check in, check out, and in-between, was friendly, personable, helpful and pleasant to talk to. I've rarely ever been so impressed by the quality of care, concern and...eagerness is probably the best word, than I have been with the staff of the Bard's Inn. That alone earns them five stars. In short: if you're traveling with pets, the Bard's Inn is your best choice. Heck, it's close to your only choice, if you want to be close to the action, but that shouldn't detract from its perks. And even if you're pet free, you can't ask for a better location, helpful and friendly staff, and comfier beds than this place. You have been warned, knaves!: Bite your thumb at this hotel, and there may be more than one Shakespearean tragedy during your stay in Ashland, in addition to the ones being performed at the Allen Elizabethan Theatre!

More importantly, I sustained damage to my truck from a mis-marked overhead clearance. The general manager, Malcolm did not return communications. The owner Jonathan claims no liability, even though it is clear at the sign that many people have hit that low clearance. Very dissatisfied with their position on the issue. Even without the damage to my truck, this is one hotel to which I will never return.
