I can't remember exactly when it was, but an exterminator showed up from this company while I was outside watering the lawn. I was so stunned that he was there because I didn't even know we had a bug problem. I stood there watering the grass and wanting to know why he was there (I was on the condo board at the time), and was growing upset that he wouldn't tell me. In retrospect, because he was hired privately, I can see why he wouldn't. He'd have to air out the extermination issue in someone else's unit. I wasn't thinking of it like that at the time though. (I'd lived in an apartment years ago where a tenant said the roaches were her "friends" and refused to let anybody in to spray. I was reliving that nightmare neighbor when he arrived.) I grumbled about it and kept watering the lawn. Fast forward two years later until last weekend, the same person who hired him before arranged for this company to exterminate our entire building. And this time I was totally on board. Also, exterminating only one unit in a building will only lead to bugs going to the next unit and the next one after that. I absolutely support that they charge for ALL units to apply pressure on those roaches-are-my-friends types. For the life of me, I cannot fully remember what the guy looked like who I was complaining about while watering the grass. It's been too long. Physically, he (Sam) vaguely reminds me of the exterminator who showed up in my unit this time, but it could be two different people. All I know is I liked Sam who treated my unit in 2023. He patiently explained where he was spraying, persistently explained where he wouldn't spray (because he was worried about my dog AND he had very kind things to say about dogs anyway, which won me over immediately) and was a friendly guy. If this WAS the same guy, he sure didn't hold a grudge against me when he returned. He was professional, informative and had a dry sense of humor. I am not in a position to know what their rates are so I can't say whether they're reasonable or not, but I liked the service. I didn't have a bug problem either time the exterminator from two years ago or last weekend (assuming it's not the same person) arrived, so I'm hoping that continues. So far, so good. read more

A waste of money. It's a trap to get you in contract for 12-18months (don't even remember) for $99-$119 every 3 months for them to come spray which doesn't seem to work. I feel stupid for allowing a sales person walk up to my home and sell me on this but hey it happens. There is no option to cancel besides paying half of the total remaining services. I can't say any of the negative reviews are wrong nor if any of the positive reviews are right. I can only say anyone reading this trying to consider choosing a company, in my case bedbugs, to consider all reviews and make a decision yourself and do what you think is best. I was giving this company the benefit of the doubt. After seeing the negative reviews, and their response to those reviews. (And probably they will respond to my review, too. I think its unnecessary in this case.) But their responses usually explain the situation explaining their point of view ultimately saying how it was the customers fault or they had a "special situation" I was skeptical but again gave the benefit of the doubt, like maybe it was the customers fault in those cases. I've worked in customer service before, you cant make everyone happy. By now I already talked to Kevin (bedbugs specialist) and have had a positive experience. He was very informative and educational about bedbugs. Things I've never heard about before, like using your car as a oven to kill the bedbugs when weather is over 75 degrees, thats a great idea. And I appreciated all of that. On top of that, the price of $1250. For all visits was a good deal for me. Other companies seem too cheap or too expensive, so with the good experience I had with him with the price seem like a good bet. The only problem that came along was that I've said twice they might come on Saturday, June 5th. Because thats the best day for me to pay for it. And I say MIGHT because he said I had to prep the house before they come. First they said confirm that the company will be doing the treatment then they will send prep list, THEN let them know when they will come. Thats what I thought the process is supposed to be. First time was on a call I said that Ill try to for Saturday but I'm not sure so ill let him know. He tells me if I have any questions to let him know by call or email. And I did, I asked a lot of questions on email and It was really nice. I thought some of them were stupid and he said that "no questions are stupid, let me know if you have any more" I then said "Alright still have to do the prep im trying to shoot for Saturday but ill let you know when im ready and sure. Thanks" (June 1st) He then said "let me know by tomorrow end of day how you are doing" (June 1st) I can say thats where Im at fault. I didn't message back to let him know. And I mentioned Saturday. But does that confirms they should come? So its June 5th, And their here. I have my own reasons why I wasn't ready. But I shouldn't have to explain them. Kevin did say I didn't have to dry all the clothes. Just bag them is fine. But with all the clothes we have I thought it was best to. I'd rather treat the clothes just to make sure before they come so its as affective as possible. But I didnt reach my goal for Saturday. Thats my fault. But eventhough I did not message him to let him know. I STILL DIDN'T CONFIRM. I'm surprised not only did they not tell me what time they were coming, there was only one guy there to do treatment? Maybe thats okay but I don't know to save time wouldn't you have atleast two people?? I tell them the house isn't ready And they give me a call A woman tell me in an upset tone. "But you scheduled for today" I try to explain but it didn't matter and said Kevin will be giving me a call. Kevin calls me and says "I'm not very happy..." I tried to explain but he cuts me off saying "I had to say no to many customers. Now they have to sleep with bugs for another week because I scheduled today for you" And I had a problem with that and I say "hey I didnt even know what time!?..." And now we are at an argument cutting off each other. Then ends and he says hes not comfortable treating my house and to choose another company And I said Great and hung up before him saying "have a nice day" because just wow. To me it was unprofessional when it didn't have to be. Why would you schedule me not knowing SURE im ready?He even told me he is not going to schedule me until I tell him I'm ready? I'm sorry for the people you had to schedule for next week. But why would you have to tell me? I'm not the person who scheduled them?? And now of course I feel bad and want to take the blame because thats the type of person I am because I know where I was at fault. But no, its still not right. For him to take no accountability AT ALL?? It didnt even have to be an argument. I was just shocked because I had faith in them. They gave me relief like Ill actually be able to treat this problem. And I was going to be ready for Tuesday and let them know when I would be ready. Take it as you will, thats my experience. If you are going to consider this company. I have to give Kevin cudos for being responsive and personable, but he freaked me the $%^# out by mistakingly telling me I had bed bugs! I found several little critters crawling around in both my master and guest bedrooms, around the upholstered headboards. Since we travel a lot, I immediately panicked thinking they had to be bed bugs. I captured 4 of them, put the little guys in plastic pill vials and, based on good Yelp reviews, sent 2 to Kevin @ A- Alert and 2 to Jim at Eco Tech Bed Bug Experts. 3 days later Kevin called me with some bad news... he said I had bed bugs and they apparently had just feasted 'cause the little guys were full of blood. I explained that neither my partner or I had any bites whatsoever. He said we just must be "non-reactors". I freaked out. He sent me a list of the preparations I needed to complete for the bed bug elimination. OMG!!! It's a nightmare. Then I called Eco Tech and spoke to Madeline just to confirm their results. She told me I did NOT have bed bugs, that they were harmless carpet beetles. I called Kevin back and asked him if he was sure they were bed bugs and he said "absolutely... been doin' this for a lot of years". I asked if I could come by to look at them with him and he said "sure, got 'em right here on my desk". I drove up to his office off Peterson Road. He couldn't have been nicer. He invited me into his office and when I told him I had someone else take a look at the bugs and they said they were not bed bugs he said, "well, let me put them under the microscope and take a better look". Sure enough, he confirmed the little dudes were NOT bed bugs. "Whatcha got here are carpet beetles". Then he showed me what real bed bugs looked like and my little guys looked nothing like those. Anyway, I was relieved and a little pissed off all at the same time. Had I only gotten one opinion, I would still be washing, drying, folding and ironing all of our clothes, bedding, sheets, towels, etc. Why he hadn't put them under the scope BEFORE he called me with his dianosis, I don't know, but getting the 2nd opinion saved me a lot of time, money and anguish. My advice? Get a couple of opinions before you embark on a costly and time consuming bed bug extermination. A side note: When I asked Kevin what they would charge to just come out to do a pest service to get rid of the carpet beetles, he quoted $185. I then called Madeline and Eco Tech charges $125 for the same service. Since they diagnosed the probelm properly the first time AND were $60 less for the service, I went with Eco Tech. Based on other Yelp reviews and just dealing with Kevin, I'm sure he's more than qualified to do a thorough bed bug extermination if you have them, but his misdiagnosis lead me to give him this less than satisfactory review. read more

I've lived in a condo building for several years that's used A-Alert for many, if not all of them. We regularly have them come in and spray the building and all of the units. Personally, my unit has an ant issue a couple of times a year that they can't seem resolve and I take care of myself. However, as a whole the building is pest free, which is great. My complaint about A-Alert is they are NEVER, NEVER, NEVER on time. We were told they'd be here at 9:30 this morning and going to each unit. It's currently 10:42 and they aren't even here...VERY typical. UPDATE: They finally showed up at 12:30...I'm still waiting for them to get to my unit at 1:33. Terrible customer service. read more

I'm very satisfied with my 2 encounters with A-Alert. The first was for bedbugs. I probably had a very mild infestation. I called them after I found 1 live bug (freshly fed, eww) marching across my sofa, and when A-Alert came out, the specialist found no other bed bugs, nor any evidence of bed bugs. So who knows, I could've picked up this guy on the CTA Or something. At any rate, I had done an extraordinary amount of prep work because I work from home, so my living room and office had to be treated as well. The specialist said that I didn't need to do any heat treatments, and probably didn't even need the 10-day follow up treatment, but "you've already pre-paid for it as part of your package, so you may as well do it." Since all my stuff was packed up for the treatment, I figured sure, why not make the most of it. A different specialist came out for the second treatment. Both specialists were really great about telling me where they were going to start, what they were going to do, and how long it was going to take. One kindly pointed out a cat toy that had been snuck into the living room, so that I could remove it into a non-treatment zone. As an added bonus: I used to have ants and carpet beetles and those were GONE after the bedbug treatments. Nice! Maybe there is enough residue to keep the centipedes at bay for a summer...? :-) Kevin was very communicative and supportive throughout this entire process. The second time I called them was a few months later when there was a bat in my furnace (which is right in my apartment). I talked to someone who explained how bats are taken care of in Chicago (no killing or trapping, thank goodness). AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!! The company engages in abusive billing practices and the customer service is traumatizing - not only was I informed to have 'screwed up thinking' but my tenants were accused of lying about the infestation continuing despite multiple rounds of treatment. Based on these favorable Yelp reviews I hired A-Alert to exterminate bed bugs/roaches in a 3-flat I own. I negotiated an all in sum of 1600$ for a continuing program of treatment till the infestations were gone ("the warranty"). Firstly, when I look at my credit card I see a bill for 1850$. Shocked, I call the company and am informed that those charges were because the exterminators found "additional sleeping areas". The treatment program continues, and after 2 rounds, I still continue to receive complaints about bed bugs/roaches from my tenants. When I ask Kevin about this I am told this is "normal", and that I have to be patient. However, one of my tenants couldn't take it anymore and decides to leave. After the 3rd round of treatment, I still continue to receive complaints. At this point when we contact Kevin/A-Alert for a 4th round of treatment I receive an enormous email detailing a list of "warranty violations" by my tenants. Essentially, I was threatened with the program being halted mid-way unless I paid 300$ to "re-instate" the warranty. As a brand new service would cost me another 1500$, I had no option but to cough up the money. After the 4th round (and 2150$), the bed bugs are finally gone (or so I have been told by A-Alert). However, the roaches still remain. At this point, Kevin informs me that the warranty program was only for the bed bugs and NOT for the roaches. I have to pay 75$ a month for a no end in sight "ongoing service program" if I wanted to have the roaches treated. What?? Where did that come from?? There isn't any transparency in their pricing, business practices or what exactly they have contracted to do. Essentially once you enter the work contract they will find ways to extract more and more money out of you. BE WARNED!! read more

I had bedbugs for a year. A whole year. You'd think I'd hate A-Alert but actually, the continuation of the problem had everything to do with stingy landlords. A-Alert couldn't have been better to work with. Having bedbugs is a nightmare. A-Alert went above and beyond, taking my repeated calls, putting me through to one of their bedbug experts who would talk me down over and over, happy to answer my questions and just chat about bedbugs in general. It sounds a little excessive, but when your home is invaded by tiny, almost-invisible, blood-sucking creatures, all you want to do is talk to someone who feels equally hostile toward the little bastards. Bed bugs suck, literally. These guys were fantastic, and if I had just called them immediately instead of panicking on my own for several days, I would have saved hundreds of dollars and not have thrown out so many items that could have been saved. Armando can spot an egg the size of a grain of salt, even in unlikely places. He was a tremendous help, and even managed to help us feel better about our very upsetting situation. We worked our butts off to prep the apartment, and after 3 treatments (all covered by one fee), we appear to have our lives and our apartment back. Stuff I read about bed bugs on the internet is scary and disconcerting. You are led to believe you might never get rid of them, and that they are nearly impossible to eliminate completely. I am a property manager, so I know a thing or two about bedbug infestations in multi unit dwellings. My Board has been fortunate enough to find Kevin and Singer Sanitation. They have responded quickly and thoroughly to every report we've received for our buildings (567 units total), and have been the sole reason we've never had a major infestation or a minor one become much worse. On top of this, my fiance dealt with bedbugs in his apartment recently, and while his landlord was being willfully ignorant regarding the situation, Kevin helped us through it all and eventually convinced my fiance's landlord to let him treat the issue. He's been bedbug free ever since. After moving into a townhome and seeing a wasp in my office, I figured rather be safe than sorry. I found A-Alert on Yelp and requested a quote. Kevin responded quickly, and after sharing a photo of the slain wasp, he said it was most likely the type that's looking for spiders and not a nest, but said he could send someone out to check on things just in case. Having two older dogs and living in a townhome with 8 other families with dogs and kids, I appreciated him still saying they can send someone. My husband called on 7-14-09. This was not a large job but the woman screening asked about 10 questions about the job, then repeatedly, about 5 times, had to consult with someone else out of hearing range. They knew the job had to be done in a couple of days, but after spending all that time on the phone answering what seemed like many irrelevant questions, he said he couldn't do it till Saturday, a date beyond my deadline. Poor Kevin. I had a complete mental breakdown in his office. Like, sobbing hysterically and telling the whole office how I was ruining my marriage. Let me begin my story (I'll be brief, I promise). I was stressed out. My husband tore his Achilles and had to have emergency surgery just days before our destination wedding. Less than a week after surgery we took a 40 hour train ride to California after the doctor told us we didn't need to cancel the wedding after all (couldn't fly due to risk of blood clots). So here we are on the 40 hour train ride back to Chicago after the wedding and I have some bites. Immediately I jump to bed bugs. And turn the first two weeks of my marriage into a nightmare. As my husband accurately pointed out, I would not be happy until I actually found a bug in our bed. And he was right. I was RELIEVED when I finally found the proof I'd been looking for. The whole time I had been calling Kevin, giving him constant updates. So when I finally found my bug (and a dirty bath mat that I was convinced was their lair) I made my way into his office with the proof I needed to have him start spraying. Long story, short I do not have bed bugs. The bug on my bed was an 'outside' bug. And the bathmat was full of lint and mold. Sometimes I really suck. The amount of time Kevin spent calming me down before and after my 'crisis' was unreal. I tried to pay him for his time - he wouldn't let me. I still might send him $100 anonymously over Christmas anyway. And he didn't treat me like I was crazy - he listened to all of my concerns as if they were very real. Sadly, I think with media hysteria, my case is not unusual. Dermatologist said my bites weren't from bed bugs (I know you bed bug experts will tell me that 'a dermatologist can't tell just by looking at your bites where they came from'! Just hush, okay?) Turns out I had a very severe case of stress induced eczema and hives - TMI, sorry. My point is, if you think you have bugs STAY CALM and call Kevin. I just gave a company a five star review and didn't technically use any of their services - they're that good. read more

He spent- literally- hours talking to me on the phone, listening to me freak out and methodically explaining about these insects and how to treat them. The office staff is also extremely professional- if someone says they'll call you back- they will and they'll really try to help you too. The technician that came out was also fantastic (Armando). BTW- these guys were just featured on WGN news. Like another reviewer said- they really went above and beyond and EVERYONE was extremely professional and kind. A Alert is amazing. I was horrified to learn that I had bedbugs. They are pesky little buggers (pun intended). You definitely need an exterminator to get rid of them. I spoke w/2 companies and A Alert had a much more comprehensive approach to combatting the problem. Kevin and Sam spent a ton of time answering my numerous questions and talked me off the ledge more than once. My tech Armando was more than amazing. I didn't even actually need to use their services because their phone consultation was so great. We had several wasps around a backyard play-set and my daughter got stung. Thinking there was a nest I couldn't see, I called them for removal. After talking, they realized that there probably wasn't a nest, the wasps were just coming to take the wood from the play-set. They suggested a few courses of action and said to call them back if that didn't work. It's rare to find a company that will spend time on the phone diagnosing a problem, and then tell you that you probably don't need their services, as opposed to just trying to make a buck. I highly recommend A-Alert, and I especially compliment the technician who did my apartment, Armando. I had/still have an infestation my unit, which is a multi-unit building. It's a horrible situation (threw a lot of things out, living out of plastic bags, looking to move out when my lease runs out), especially because I don't have the greatest property manager. Armando treated my apartment twice and was very professional, personable, and most importantly, thorough. He answered all of my questions honestly and didn't seem to sugarcoat the truth. I value this even more, knowing my property manager doesn't seem to care to be thorough in this situation. It remains to be seen whether the infestation will return. If it does, I know it won't be their fault, but the fault of the property manager and the nature of the bugs. Hire then if you have a bed bug issue. I highly recommend. read more

When my tenant told me he had cockroaches I knew I had to act fast. I called A-Alert, on a Wednesday, and they were able to come out that Saturday. It only cost $75 for Frank, the technician to spray and gel the entire apartment. He was wonderful to work with, explained what he was doing, and answered all my questions with patience. This is the kind of person you really want to represent a company, an employee like this is gold (I should know, I've hired some doozies in the past). When we found two bugs he was even able to identify them, one beetle, and one roly-poly bug- no sign of cockroaches. But that doesn't mean they weren't there. I feel completely confident that this treatment will have taken care of our icky problem. I spoke on the phone with Doug a few times, and he was amazingly helpful! When I made the phone call to this company, not only did the owner understand and talk me down from the ledge....he put me at ease and told me some things we could do right away to solve the problem. Last week I found teeny teeny ants in my kitchen munching on the cat food. They were exceptional difficult to notice because of their teeny teeny size. I called A Alert and was told they could have someone out Monday (today), but I did call on Wednesday hoping to have someone out within a reasonable length of time. Today Frank Nere came to do the treatment. The infestation had of course grown since Wednesday. Frank did a remarkable job of tracking their entry spots and treating those areas with "bait". He also "baited" spots in the basement that could be points of entry and departure. I was extremely pleased with Frank's ability to see those teeny critters and "bait" them. A Alert is fortunate to have an employee such as Frank Nere working for them. Even though I had waited longer than what I had wanted to wait, Frank saved the company's reputation for me. So even tho I am very pleased with the service man, I am displeased with the length of time I had to wait to get a service man out to my home. Bugs do multiply (as the company should know). My poor cat did not want to go near her food and to move the food was an invitation for the ants to travel to another location. I will wait and see if those uninvited "guests" have now departed for parts unknown...hopefully they are gone for good...but we will wait and see. read more

Just got off the phone with a worker named Kevin and wow was he RUDE. My mom was trying to explain how on their website it says they do FREE estimates for bed bugs and when the guy got to our house and found NOTHING, they still charged her $100 to do nothing but look around which is exactly what we could've done. When my mom explained this to him he started SCREAMING!!! The company scheduled my appointment as a roach extermination rather than a bed-bug extermination. I found this out after calling to ask simple questions prior to my appointment, such as what the company's method is, i.e. spray, fogger, etc. and if they povide ongoing support, such as leaving glue traps or interceptors. However, Liz, the "office manager" would not allow me to speak with someone to answer my questions because she was too concerned with exterminating my apartment for roaches. She couldn't even understand why I would have any questions (I guess I'm supposed to just sit back and watch?) I pleaded with her to let me speak with someone about services they offer, yet she refused. At a time when I have not slept in a week and have a full time job and three kids to take care of ALL ALONE, I do not need someone adding another obstacle in font of something that should be easy. read more

STAY AWAY from A ALERT EXTERMINATING SERVICE Ive used yelp for 3 years and have never written a review but after this awful transaction I just had to. Yes so I recently bought a multi unit building and had renovations done. During construction I never had a bug problem. But since I'm renting the units I would want my landlord to do the same for me. I arranged to have a one preventive service done on all units. Roughly three weeks later while showing the place I had a live roach problem. The next day I called A Alert and I was told that they would not stand behind the service that was done and the only way they come out is if they charged me for additional services. I was taken aback that they would not stand behind the service that was done as I had them come out just 20 days ago. I talked with the a supervisor who repeatedly told me I made a mistake in choosing a onetime service and that I should have chosen a multiple visit package. My question to that is if it doesn't work why offer it? Kevin was very honest with me when I told him we had taken our dog to the vet for a skin condition and the vet found 1 flea. The next week we had to take her back for the same skin condition and the vet found another flea. I didn't know if we had to treat our house for fleas and Kevin honestly told me to monitor the situation because it probably wasn't needed if we gave our dog flea medicine. I appreciate his honesty! I'm heartbroken. Just so people know -- you cannot request a specific time for an inspector to come. If you ask to have your time changed or cancelled, they'll say you can never re-schedule or seek their services ever again. I feel stuck and frightened. Trust me -- I'm not nuts -- I did what I thought was best and they brought the hammer down on me. They may do a great job, but they do not tell people this about their scheduling.
