I bought half a cord of wood from him. Nearly triple of the price I bought last year! However I picked up the wood myself. Dean however a friendly old man, sold me wet wood! When I pointed out the fact that it was wet, he said it probably got rained on and to loose stack it and it will dry in no time! I rely on my fireplace to stay warm! Instead of a warm house, I had a smoke filled house with a fire that constantly went out. My woodshed is full of his wood which I need to restack to make room for wood that will actually burn. We got quoted for premium firewood - maple, seasoned for 3 YEARS. Delivered next day, and we used the wood to build a fire that night. They would barely catch. DO NOT BUY WOOD from them, they would charge you premium price for wood so wet that do not burn. Dean even pointed out during the delivery himself the wood had fir mixed in. Charged us for ALL maple price! Extremely disappointed now we are stuck with this half cord of wet wood. You can hear moisture escaping from the wood as they burn throughout. read more

On September 2, 2025, we paid Dean of A-1 Firewood (Bothell, WA) to deliver 3 cords of split firewood (2 of fir and 1 of maple) plus $150, delivery fee plus tax. He told us the wood would be 16 inches long. Some pieces were and some were quite a bit shorter, but giving him credit for all pieces at the correct length (which they were not) when we stacked the wood, we received 274 cubic feet of firewood, which equals 2 cords and 18 cubic feet, NOT the 3 cords we paid for, which would have been 384 cubic feet. The delivery was SHORT by 110 cubic feet of firewood! When I talked with Dean on the phone on September 11, 2025, he offered to bring us another cord "next year." I said we either want the missing 110 cubic feet of wood now, with no additional delivery fee or a refund of $463. (110 x the $3.86 per cubic foot that he charges for fir plus tax - we did not ask for the higher price that he charges for maple). He refused to give us more wood or a refund and said that we had accepted being shorted when he left! He KNOWS that he cheated us and he doesn't care! I was upset by that and he chided me for my "attitude"! I should have read the reviews. He apparently makes a habit of giving people less than they paid for. It's unfortunate, because the quality of the wood is fine, but you pay for WAY more than you think when he under-delivers. read more

It's hard to find good wood that is fully dry, especially this time of year. I have had some bad experiences with some guys that are cutting/selling their own wood so I decided to try A-1 because it appeared to be a legitimate operation. Unfortunately, what I wound up with was the worst experience yet. I ordered 2 cords from Dean. He dropped half at my place and the other half at my neighbor's a couple of doors down. His truck is a dumper so he eyeballed what he dropped at my place. The wood seemed decent and the amount felt a little light but it was night so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. The next day when I stacked it I noticed that pretty much all of the wood was wet on the outside and some of it was encrusted with snow so it had obviously been sitting out in the elements for quite some time. I also noticed that what I had was only a little more than 2/3 of a cord - my neighbor had less than 2/3 of a cord so together we were short about 2/3 of a cord - not insignificant. I tested the wood with my water meter some of it was fine, I'd say about 1/3, the rest was well into the 20's water content (it should be 20 or less), some read into the 30's meaning it was freshly dropped. All of the wood I tested by splitting it open so I would get a true reading of the dryness rather than reading off of what had been exposed to the elements. As of this morning, almost a month after the wood was delivered, a good portion of the wood still hisses when I put it on the fire even though it has been out of the elements the day after I got it. I called him up and he graciously agreed to send me a check for a half cord - seemed fair enough. A couple of days later he called back and said that he talked it over with his wife and something seemed fishy and he was not sending me the check after all. He said he knew what he had in his truck before he left his house and that someone probably stole some of the wood from my place. There was a light layer of snow on the ground with no evidence of anyone else being there. Since he was just eyeballing what he dropped from his truck, my guess is that the person before me got more than they asked for. With tax and delivery fee we paid $1010.16 for two cords of tamarack and doug fir that was supposed to have been covered and seasoned for at least 18 months. What we got was 1 1/3 cords of soaked, partially seasoned wood. He buys his wood in Eastern Washington. I am not sure if he is checking it before he leaves but he is either getting ripped off himself and does not know or knows it and just doesn't care. I'm not sure which is worse. I'd be willing to change this review if A-1 is willing to do the right thing but that seems highly unlikely. read more

I always order wood from a1 firewood and landscaping.. this year I ordered five chords of wood pinion cedar mix. All the wood has always come the right length in the past all this wood is way too long and I'm having to recut five chords of what. Cuz I am cutting the pinion it is extremely green the cedar is dry. My chainsaw blade gets dull extremely fast due to the sap content in the pinon. This is way too much work for spending $1,800 on having wood delivered. There is so much sap in the pinion that it will not burn read more

I do NOT recommended this business. Dean talked the talk, but didn't walk the walk. When I called him I was charmed and I thought "this is an old timer. I like working with old timers because they are straight forward and know what they are doing". Maybe I caught him on an off day? The night before delivery he left me a message, that he would be here about 8am. I returned his call at 7am and he told me he was going to be closer to 9. Okay cool. At ~10 am when I hadn't seen him or heard from him I gave him a call. He said he'd had a water leak, he hadn't left yet, and he'd be around in 10 minutes (I happen to live very close by). Okay, fair enough, life happens. Minor inconvenience for a guy with two toddlers in-tow, but ultimately NBD. He arrived about 10 minutes later with a huge truck chock-full of wood, probably 3+ cords. I think "how's he manage to get just one cord to dump?". Well the answer is simple- he guesses. And guess what? He guessed wrong. My stack of wood is 8ftx6ftx~16in That's about 2/3 of a cord. For premium prices, I'm very unsatisfied with this. Was it dry? Hardly. I'm a cabinet/furniture maker and I mill lumber, so I have a few moisture meters. A significant portion of this wood is over 30%. It's visibly saturated. Maybe it just sits in puddles in his truck or something? If it's not green, it's waterlogged for sure. Also, I am not at all pleased with how much punky wood there is. There are termite and powder-post beetle holes in all this wood. This concerns me maybe more than other people because I don't want those critters anywhere near my nice slabs/logs. Having read other reviews after the fact and seeing the exact same issues pop up again and again, I am kicking myself for not reading them first. He had big talk about "there are a lot of fly-by-night characters in the wood world".... Well, I guess I have to say "it takes one to know one", because I would have happily paid half his prices for equally wet wood. He says he sells 50cords of wood to Avalon to test their stoves... I guess he sells them the good stuff and sends the rest to the onesie-twosie customers he's not likely to see again? I'm thankful I have a huge supply of firewood for the future, and only needed to buy one time for this current season (all my supply was cut last summer/isn't dry yet)..... Anyway, check the moisture levels and quantity before you pay this guy or you'll be another one of these comments feeling like you got ripped off. read more

Had to step in and defend A-1 Firewood after seeing some negative reviews. When I first moved into my home with a Woodstove, it was a constant battle finding good seasoned wood. Had to turn away some shady characters that tried to make a quick buck selling green wood. With a little planning ahead you'll be happy with your wood from A-1. With rising fuel prices, expect even more expensive wood. Buy green and let it sit for a couple seasons, if you have the room. Always try to get my seasoned wood delivered in June. Dean drops the 2-2.5 cords in my driveway where I get my exercise for the day stacking in the back. Wood has always been bone dry and ready to burn by fall. Had to request smaller pieces as the last batch was too heavy for my wife to load into our stove. No problem. Dean brought smaller pieces and they burn great! read more

Called and talked to Dean on Monday making arrangements for delivery on Wednesday at 11AM. When noon arrived with no delivery I called him and he said, "oh yeah, today is Wednesday" and said he'd be here within the hour. I will say, that part was good. Upon arriving and taking a first look at the wood in the back of the truck, I picked up a couple of pieces and they were really heavy, indicating that at least those particular pieces were not dry or seasoned and certainly not for the 18 months he claimed. The wood did look really good, but looks can be deceiving. As he pointed out, no bark, all Fir and really clean, but for the most part it was semi dry at best and not "dry and ready to burn" as advertised and mentioned by him on several occasions during our conversation. In reality, any wood can be ready to burn even if it was just cut yesterday although not recommended because of creosote build up in your system but when advertised as dry, it needs to be just that. On the phone he quoted me a price of $485 plus a small delivery fee which, for 18 month seasoned, dry wood at this time of year didn't seem all that unreasonable. When it came time to pay, I ended up writing him a check for $558.00 which included the small delivery charge plus sales tax. I was told repeatedly during our conversation that he has been in business for 44 years and owns a quality outfit unlike many of the other "fly by night" folks who sell firewood. I have been buying firewood for many years from different sellers and have never had to pay sales tax! It was always included in the cash only price. To be fair, I get the fact that as a business entity in Washington everyone should be adding sales tax and maybe the other dealers were dodging that part but this should have been disclosed at the very beginning and if it had been, that probably would have been a deal breaker for me. So, bottom line here is I would not recommend this company for firewood. As previously mentioned, many folks have reported wet wood being an issue. If in fact the wood had been dry and ready to burn as advertised, maybe a different story. When I asked him how he keeps the wood dry for 18 months after being split he told me it is covered with tarps. First I do not leave many reviews, the product or service needs to be extremely good or bad. Though this is not extremely bad it is worth chiming in. I paid a premium to get hard wood and for what I paid I expected to get a quality cord of wood. First the quality was crap, it was the left over odds and ends and all the crappy cuts no one else wood take or want. It was not seasoned as advertised, not green but very wet. There was no consistency in the length of the pieces some to long for my insert others very short again just random crap. Secondly the quantity, this was not a full cord. My storage racks hold just shy of a full cord, I usually end up with about a dozen pieces that get left out under cover. When we finished stacking we had plenty of room left in the last two rack for more, if I had to guess I would say we are short a little over a 1/8 of a cord. What really pisses me off is Dean has no clue how much wood he is leaving he dumps a pile and takes a guess. If he thinks it is to much he takes some back. How do I know this, I watched him do just this on my security camera. He dumped the wood, walked around the pile decided it was to large and started tossing pieces back into the truck. I estimate he tossed back what I am short. I should have accepted all the negative reviews and gone with someone else. Needless to say I will not be using A-1 in the future and I caution anyone who is considering A-1 for firewood. read more

I bought some great wood from this gentleman about 10 years ago which we used mainly for camping/recreational use. It was FABULOUS. Well cut, well seasoned, burned HOT and LONG with no sparks. This past spring we sold our city house, moved out a bit and now have a wood stove which we use to heat our downstairs. Of course we wanted more of the same great wood. The first time I called (mid-day on a weekday) he told me he was busy bowling and he would call me back. I waited a week and never heard anything. A week later I tried again (also mid-day weekday) and he told me he was busy shopping at Costco and would call me back. Again I never heard anything. Two calls, two weeks, two promises to be called back, two failed promises. I found somebody else. I would not have posted a negative review if the guy had just said, "No, sorry I don't deliver there" or whatever. No problem. But don't tell me you're too busy bowling or shopping, promise to call back and then don't. RUDE. read more

***Buyer beware***** He charges an extreme premium for his wood (which is not his wood, he is a middle man.) 2 years season... Yes. Seasoned 2 years in rounds not split. The wood you will receive will not be ready to burn! Stack your wood prior to him leaving or giving him payment. He guesses on what he delivered and if it's short don't count on the remainder of your wood delivered within a reasonable amount of time. Our first conversations with A-1 Firewood (Dean) was positive. Dean seemed very friendly and was knowledgeable in answering any questions I had over the phone. We ordered 2 cords of wood and had it delivered. When it was delivered, a lot of the wood looked wet but Dean said it was just from a little bit of rain and it would burn great. Also, a lot of the logs were pretty large in size and he said that those were good for burning over night. After he left, we started a fire and the wood wasn't catching very well. We ended up starting the fire with our wet cedar and than after coals were hot, added the batch that was delivered. It still didn't seem to burn very well but we just thought that maybe it was still wet from a little rain. We continued to stack our wood and also put some inside our house for looks. After about a month, the logs inside our house started sprouting mushrooms. About 2 months later, the logs outside started sprouted mushrooms and forming a black fuzzy layer along the outside. I called him up and told him our concerns and he said that he would come out and take a look at it but he was headed out for vacation. About another month passed and I called him back because he never touched base with us. He said he would come out and take a look at it and he would bring us some more wood that was dry. When he showed up, he drove his truck right through our grass and over our front plants, destroying them, while also taking our a huge branch of our magnolia tree. We have a huge gravel parking spot at the top of our driveway that he could have parked in. He then preceded to ask a neighborhood girl where our wood was at and she was very confused and said she would get us. He helped himself into our backyard without grabbing us first and it seemed very unprofessional. My husband met him around back and showed him our problems with the wood. His only advice was to cross stack it. We told him that we don't think that was the issue, because our wood that was inside our house was having the same problems and it was being stored near our fireplace. He ended up taking off without saying anything. My husband thought he was leaving some wood for us to try but he just took off without saying goodbye. He called that night with the same advice, "cross stack it". I told him again that couldn't be the problem because our wood inside our house (dry heat) had the same issues as the outside wood. I also told him that our friend that recommended him was not happy with his last batch of wood from him and if he could explain that. He kept repeating "cross stack It". At this point it was getting very frustrating. We paid a premium price for wood that was suppose to be burn ready. The large pieces don't burn very well and die out over night with logs left in our insert in the morning. The only way we can get the wood to burn well is to chop it into much smaller pieces which is work that we did not want to do with the price we paid. I am very disappointed in how Dean handled the whole situation. I have the video footage as well from our ring camera that was installled. UPDATE- 10/27/2017 A1 firewood didn't respond to my repeated phone messages concerning the lack of wood on my initial delivery. Apparently, they then read the admittedly uncharitable review below and got back in touch with me. Dean was very nice and said he would "drop off some more wood" and "make me happy". If they did read my initial review, it would have been easy to work out that I had initially received slightly more than 1/3 cord of maple and had paid for a full cord of maple. Coming home today I found a small pile of wood in my driveway and knew that I would be disappointed again. I have stacked about 25 delivered cords in my wood burning years. I know what a cord is. One full cord is always a surprise and two cords is a huge pile. In this instance, I was expecting slightly less than 2/3 of a cord. Sure enough, after stacking, this latest deposit was less than 1/3 of a cord. Some of it was freshly split and I doubt that this wood is dry. So I am still at least 1/3 cord down and more frustrated than ever. A cord is 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet . With a square tipper truck, the math should be easy. I was looking forward to adding stars and a conciliatory review but I think I will let this one rest where it is. Potential customers: If you use A1 firewood, on delivery, have them stack it fairly and keep a tape measure handy. Ridiculous. Dean came in his tipper. Doors opened and I got a portion of the wood in the back. Dean said "some fir fell on top, but you can have that for free". The pile looked a bit skinny but I gave him the benefit of the doubt... and a check for $524. On stacking it, I have an 8'x4'x15 inch stack of maple and about 3/4 as much of wet unseasoned fir (with green, bendy, needled braches). I believe a cord should be 8'x4'x4'. Called and sent photos, called and left a message..no response..... other than Dean cashing my check. Either he is disorganized enough not to know what he is dropping off, or he is purposefully shorting his customers. His job is to know 'what' and 'how much' he is dropping off. My kids came running out during the unloading and were excited to get the wood in. They then got a lesson in what it's like to see dad get ripped off. You can imagine that my spouse was thrilled. Merry Christmas Mr. Dean. So I got a 'face cord' for $500 dollars- cheaper to buy it from the gas station forecourt at that price. Not sure what to do with my stack of wet fir. Dean delivered to me this last week, and I spent the next 3 days loading 2 cords of wood into my shed. He included a mix of maple and fir and when I started to burn it the quality was excellent. I also ordered wood from Dean and was disappointed In the amount of wood I received I ordered one chord he got there and told me he would cut me a good deal on 2 of them $600 When he delivered that I told him that I have been getting wood for At least 20 years and I could tell that all I was receiving was less than a A cord and a Half .I will say the wood burnt well But when paying $300 for a chord I expect they full chord which is 4' by 4' by 8 He acknowleged that it looked light of 2 chords and knocked it down to 550 Which was not a great deal but I figured since it is an older guide doing family business I would support him but once I stack that I had a cord and a quarter It's very disappointing to not be Able to buy a True cord of wood in a fair price If anybody could recommend a place or places sells logs or rounds that would be great read more

Called up Dean regarding a firewood delivery. He stated he had seasoned maple and seasoned fir. I decided I would try something different and order the maple. The price was high, $585 a cord, plus delivery. Which seemed very high but not a price that was unbelievable for a dry seasoned hardwood, delivered, in the city. Dean showed up the next week and left the load on my driveway. As he was unloading he stated the wood had been seasoned for 3 years. It wasn't raining the day the wood was delivered and I was able to get it all stacked under cover the same day before the rain came. I still had a couple of bundles of Tamarack left over from the year before so it took me a couple of days before I started to try to incorporate in some of the maple into our stove. The very first piece went in on a reload over hot coals with some very dry Tamarack. The wood, hissed, spit water, and just smoldered. Another piece, same results. The next day I took the moisture meter and split 8 random pieces and checked them with a moisture meter on the fresh face. Everyone of them were 26-29% and visibly damp on the split face. I called up Dean to see what he had to say. I was almost out of my Tamarack and it certainly seemed this wood wouldn't be burnable this year. After telling Dean the information above above he asking me how it was stacked and asked if I used a Firestarter. I told him I put it in a hot fire and it was crib stacked on the ends, filled in the middle, under cover. He proceeded to tell me that it was rain moisture and would need to all be crib stacked and a fan placed on it. I told him it hadn't seen a drop of rain on it since it was delivered and it has been under cover the whole time. He stated it must have been before it was delivered. I told him it wasn't a rain issue as I had split a fair number of pieces and checked them with a moisture meter. Dean proceeded to tell me he didn't believe in moisture meters, had never used one in his 30 years, could tell every thing he needed to know with his hands, and could tell everything he needed to know about what kind of person I was by the fact I was using one. He didn't really elaborate on what he meant by that, but his hands were the ones that unloaded that wood. So either he is incompetent, or lives with his own definition of seasoned wood. Dean also stated it was my fault for ordering late in the year and that was my lesson to learn. He reiterated that I just needed to crib stack the wood and get a fan on it. I told him he was charging a premium price and the wood wasn't seasoned as he stated and he was telling me it was my problem to fix. He then got calmer and said he "might" drop off some fir. Later that week he came by and dumped approx. 1/6 of a cord of wet, muddy, unseasoned fir. So nearly $700 after delivery and tax and I have nothing that will be usable this year from him. My daughter and family moved into a new house a month ago. As it is the beginning of winter, moving into a large house with extremely high ceilings and older windows, heating is going to be an issue. They ordered wood from another company that said it had locations in 6 states and Canada. You had to order online with a card. Well, fast forward a month, and still no wood. Many excuses as to why, ignored phone calls, ignored emails. I tried to call them today, and no phone service and website was down for maintenance. Yeah.. okay! I got on line after work, trying to find reputable places for buying firewood. Every website was order and pay online. Not falling for that again. Finally, I went onto Craigslist. I sure did not want to but I was grasping at straws now. I am very happy I did. I called and Dean answered. I told him the story of what happened to my daughter and her family. He was so kind and understanding. He offered to drop off some wood to them for free until payday when we could order some. I told him that I would be ordering but that I was going to have to get a half cord because of price. Not only did he deliver a cord of wood to my daughter house within 3 hours, but he also said that I could pay in 3 different payments. I mean seriously!!!!! Who does that in this day and age? I was so impressed with his empathy, kindness, and thoughtfulness. I would so HIGHLY suggest that if anyone needs firewood, they call Dean. He delivered exactly what he said he would, dry and aged firewood, a full cord, and did it with a smile. We will be using him every year. read more

Called A1 last Thursday to buy a cord of seasoned Maple. Dean quoted me the price for wood and delivery and said he could get the cord out to me the next day, Friday, if someone will be home. I agreed and told him I'd pick up his $516.06 in cash that night and would be home all day Friday for his delivery. Well you guessed it. Waited all day long Friday and no one showed up and worse was I wasn't even provided the courtesy of a phone call to explain the delay. Saturday came and went and still no phone call and here we are on Sunday afternoon when Dean finally calls up and said, "I must have had a small case of the flu, but I'm better now and can deliver it tomorrow, Monday, but it would probably be before 8am. I told him to forget the delivery. I'll just hold out for a better day/time delivery. No apologies. Not even a viable excuse. Apparently firewood sales is such a lucrative business that a vender can look $500.00 in the face for about 4 hours worth of work and risk losing it by providing a lackadaisical attitude towards his customers. And it must be lucrative. The last time I bought a cord of wood, premium hardwoods sold for between $150.00 - $175.00, not the $600. - $900. it now sells for. I can never complain about my high natural gas or electricity heating bills in the future when burning wood costs about 30% more. read more

Bought a cord of maple from Dean just now. Bottom line, the wood is excellent... Full cord, clean, bone dry, really pretty wood. The price was a bit higher than I have seen from some ($425/cord) but this was in January so can't complain too much and I am happy to spend a bit more for this quality. On the good side: Very prompt delivery. On the not so good side: I would call this garbage wood. Don't be fooled by the picture of the truck full of nicely stacked same size pieces, that's not what he delivers. Looks like he gathers the leftovers from a logging operation, the stuff nobody else wants. Most of it is 6" - 14" rounds, maybe split in half with huge knots making impossible to hand split into anything of useful size. This would be great if you want a gigantic bonfire, but doesn't work well in a fireplace, woodstove or for small campfires, also doesn't stack worth beans. read more

Dean and his company are totally legit. I heat my home by woodstove, so I've purchased dozens of cords of firewood over the years. I gave A-1 a shot, after being very disappointed with other suppliers... Dean delivered two cords of very dry (avg 14% on a wood moisture meter) mixed wood to my driveway on the same day I ordered it. It's clean, dry, good burning firewood. If you don't know what you're doing with firewood,(especially in the northwest) you will generally get scammed with wet, rotten, nasty firewood. Save yourself some trouble and call up Dean. One thing to note, he delivers wood in various sizes. including some "overnight" pieces.. which are pretty big for some woodstoves. You might want to get a fiskars super splitter(best splitting maul on the planet) if you have a small stove... you should have one anyway. read more
