Served in styfoam and plastic utensils. Have to get your own drink. Have to get your own sauces. Area to sit in is clean and basic. We also cleaned up the table and discarded trash. Ribs fell off the bone, but didn't have much flavor. BBQ was good. Half a chicken was good, except white meat was dry, but I'm a dark meat fan. Mac and cheese was good, but would pass on the hash. The Bbq Barn used to be a pretty good place to eat bbq and get a good dessert. No more for me. The cake slices were ample and good unlike my own which are excellent but my issue is that I don't bake anymore because of health issues. So I drive to North Augusta to find the cake slices have gone up and the size of the slices have decreased and gotten thinner. I ordered two of the chocolate layer cake slices and when I got home discovered the cake was so dry and virtually tasteless. The last time I tried the coconut layer cake and it was not good. No real vanilla flavor was used but tasted like artificial flavoring was used. This is it! Not crossing the bridge anymore for what used to be pretty good food. We've been searching for a true bbq place (that isn't a chain) and haven't had any success over the last few months after moving here. We just happened to be across the river for the afternoon and found this gem! Moist and tender cuts of meat and they definitely don't skimp. Very reasonably priced. It's funny because they say that the sampler meat platters feed two but they could easily feed a family of 4-5! We will be bringing all of our visiting family and friends here! I ordered the sampler plate ($13.75) that comes with two sides and two meats. I asked for ribs and BBQ (pulled pork), hash/rice, and slaw. The ribs still had the membrane on the underside which is a rookie mistake and the pulled pork was room temp, hardly warm. I added some of the vinegar based sauce to revive it all and finished mostly satisfied. The Daily special ($9.50) was 1/2 chicken and two sides. I ordered the same sides since the hash has a lot of flavor and the slaw was unbelievably good. The chicken was overlooked and slightly dry but the smoked flavor helped save it a bit. I can't say I am impressed with the quality and was hoping to taste the same food everyone was raving about in Yelp. Five stars for being an awesome, multi generational family owned business. Four stars for great tasting sides, all of them (had the hash rice, Mac and cheese, baked beans, and fries). Fries were super soggy but they graciously replaced them with crispy crinkle fries. If you like crispy fries, ask for crinkle cut to begin with. Three stars for great tasting BBQ sandwich, good tasting but very dry smoked turkey sandwich that was in desperate need of some mayo or a wet pickle, at least. The bun was so dry on top of the dry turkey, so it had to be soaked in sauce. All the sauces are vinegar based, which is a NC style. And a big ol cockroach was still moving on the floor. Tried this place while visiting SC thanks to other reviewers. Small and unassuming from the outside but the BBQ was great! Coming from Texas, I didn't want to try the brisket. I had the two meat plate with pork BBQ and ribs. Both were solid! For sides I had mac n cheese and hash. Again, both were solid. They have spicy and mild versions of their SC and GA sauces which are self serve. Tried all 4 and they were awesome. Great job BBQ Barn, keep it up! read more

BBQ Barn has been consistent for a long time with their exceptional food that beats Pot Smokers and every other BBQ place in town, then the quality train collapsed. Mac and cheese was soupy and had shreds of un-melted shredded cheese, potato salad was dry, bland and had big chunks of egg in it. Hash and rice was swimming down the grand ol stream of water. It's a shame when you live in the south and there's not a decent barbecue place in town. I know a lot of people around here will not agree and will say the food is fine and it has always been fine for centuries. I will take the first step and say the consistency is going downhill. Ordered a 2 meat special Ribs and turkey. The ribs were good not great dry but pulled apart easy and the turkey was excellent but the slices were smoked on top and bottom which I guess means it was off a turkey roll and not fresh bird My sides were French fries and Mac and cheese. One of my favorite BBQ places in the CSRA easily! They are located out in North Augusta, which is just a short drive if you are in the downtown area. The outside is nothing fancy, which is usually a good sign for some good old fashioned BBQ. They have some daily specials which are good, but typically I get the BBQ plate(pulled pork). The large plate is enough to last for 2 meals for most and it comes in under $10. They give you a ton of food for the price, which is great as the quality is very good as well. The hash and rice is a must get also as a side. All of the sides that I've received here have been good actually. I honestly didn't realize it until a few hours after dining, but this place had THE best pulled pork I've had in my life. I'm not one to doll out a "best" rating for anything, but I tried for a very long time to remember if I've ever had better BBQ than at the Barn, but I was unsuccessful. I don't really care about the slices of white bread, the super sweet tea, or the sides, although the hash was pretty spectacular. My main concern was the pork. These guys are obviously South Carolina pros. The meat was juicy, well-seasoned, maybe a little sweet, and smoky especially in those occasional lovely, chewy, fatty, blackened bits from the outside of the pig. No sauce, no bread, no nothing. Just perfect, awesome pulled pork. Now I said no sauce, but they do have some pretty nice ones. Although, if you go in looking for KC or Georgia-Red sweet sauce, you will be disappointed. In true South Carolina fashion, they have three basic mustard-based sauces, one regular, one pretty spicy, and one barely sweet. But like I said, these are not at all necessary and only provide a little attitude and variation for the lovely pork. First off I want to go w/ 4.5 stars, but since that's not an option, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and go right on up to 5. I'll explain the 1/2 off in a bit. I absolutely loved pulling off the road and into the rock parking lot, up to this literal barn-looking place. In all of my adventures, usually places w/ unpretentious outsides that still have a lot of customers means the food is worth the humble appearance. I went to Bbq Barn on Wed and was lucky enough to have a good special for a Yelp review. It's the TWO meat, 2 sides & a drink special for $13. VALUE! (Non specials are still well priced also). What I luv about this place is on the menu there is BBQ. A "yankee" like myself, BBQ is a descriptor. An adjective. Not a noun. BBQ beef. BBQ chicken, etc. So I had NO IDEA exactly what I ordered but decided to anyways, as 1 of my meats. WHY NOT!? I also ordered the pork loin. Mac & cheese. [Carolina] Hash. And a sweet tea. (I'm getting used to this being the equivalent of water in South lol). 5 mins later I had a 3-divided styrofoam plate w/ 2 slices of white bread in a paper sac, on top of my hash, mac & cheese, and BBQ underneath to beautiful slices of pork loin. In SC, they have mustard-based BBQ sauce. It's basically vinegar and mustard w/ some added spices. BBQ Barn also has GA BBQ sauce. It's red and basically vinegar and spices. Can't say which one I like more. The mustard is subtle. It's like a hint of mustard in vinegar. Take out that hint, and you get the GA BBQ at BBQ Barn. Pork loin was moderately dry. Not that much flavor for BBQ. This is my 1/2 star. It's still a great pork loin, but the lack of subtle flavors of "pure" pork loin is my reservation. Smokiness or marinate is more what I expect. HOWEVER, if you add the bbq sauce, you get a nice pork loin. And if that's the reason for the lack of flavor, ok. But there ARE places that marinade or add some subtle flavors AND give you BBQ sauce too. I like my complexities w/ BBQ. Mac & cheese was great. You can tell it's not just some macaroni and some cheese sauce. There are cheese "crumbles". As if it was grated onto the mac. W/ some breadcrumbs. AWESOME! The Carolina Hash was watery. I prefer the Carolina Hash at Maurice's Piggie Park (review to follow when I have more time). It's still great, but the fact that they don't drain the rice before adding the hash to it waters it down. Otherwise GREAT! As for BBQ, it's actually BBQ pork (unless I'm way off). It's so good, I really don't care what animal it is! The BBQ has all the flavors I look for. There's some smokiness, some woody flavors, spice, and my favorite some charry pieces. It's fantastic, I know I'll go back for that. ABSOLUTELY! Overall, I'll be back to this place as much as I can while I live in the CSRA! Keeping it simple, the bbq is good. Not great but good and that's because I've had some of the best to compare it to. I had Texas, Memphis and Georgia bbq. The ribs are pretty good but I found the chicken bland. I know the sauce is universal and used on all meats but my bird was not seasoned well. I like my meat seasoned well because I may eat sauce but not every time. The vegetables and sides are good. Honestly though, the star of the show are the desserts. read more

Best BBQ in the Central Savannah River Area by far. The only BBQ worth eating. Here is my review from my food blog (http://cookingwithlittlebuddy.com): Before the BBQ Barn arrived in North Augusta four years ago, there was no really exceptional barbeque in the Augusta, Georgia, area. North Augusta is right across the Savannah River from Augusta. I can easily walk to Augusta from my house via the 13th Street bridge. Augusta has Sconyer's BBQ. It is an institution here and popular. Jimmy Carter used them to cater some White House events. But, like the famous Shealy's in Batesburg-Leesville (versus the unbelievable Jackie Hites down the road), the food is not all that good. Augusta has the BBQ Barn right down the road. My favorite BBQ is pulled pork, followed by pork ribs and pork hash. BBQ Barn has some of the best pulled pork I have ever had. One of the ways you know you have good BBQ is that it doesn't need sauce and, in some cases, sauce actually hurts the taste. BBQ Barn pulled pork needs no sauce, it is so flavorful and just the right amount of smoke. But, if you like sauce, their barbeque is good with it and they offer four sauces, all of them excellent: * Thin mild vinegar/ketchup (Carolina style but they call it Georgia Red) * Thin hot vinegar/ketchup (also Carolina style) * Thin vinegar/mustard sauce (mustard sauces are only originally found in the South Carolina midlands) * Thick mustard sauce I had never had a thin vinegar/mustard sauce and this is excellent, as are the other three. The thin mild vinegar/ketchup sauce is my favorite barbeque sauce and they do theirs as good as it comes. The ribs are also very good and I love their hash and rice. They offer all the usual sides, from potato salad to baked beans to cole slaw to mac and cheese. All are good. I usually get green beans, mac and cheese and my wife likes slaw. Everything is made from scratch. The skins are to die for if they haven't run out already. One thing the BBQ Barn is known for that you don't usually find at barbeque restaurants is home made desserts. You get large portions at a reasonable price of a variety of cakes and pies. I usually don't get dessert because I am completely full from the barbeque, but people order whole cakes. I have had the coconut cake and the red velvet cake. Both are excellent. BBQ Barn is tucked away in a fairly obscure location, but is only a few minutes away from Augusta, so it is really a completely local place. read more

Made the choice between here and a local burger joint. I think I made the right choice incoming here. I selected the strawberry shortcake as a precursor to my meal....Delicious!! Strawberries definitely fresh and overall, the cake was fantastic. They had different cakes and pies to choose from. I chose the BBQ plate, large (which is there pulled pork) I had baked beans and Mac and cheese as the sides (two side and bread come with the plate) the baked beans were great, nothing fancy, just good flavor mixed in with my bread and pulled pork. The mac and cheese falls flat. Definitely not fresh or unique in any way. The pulled pork (I mixed in a mild sauce on one side of the plate and had a hot sauce on the other side) was actually... Very good!! It comes more shredded than pulled on the plate, naked. You add the sauce, you enjoy! It was cooked perfectly and mixed in well with the beans and bread. My mouth was happy with the choice I made. The BBQ plate is huge, I could have easily shared this with a stranger and saved them some money. I think the value is great based on the size portion (large) and two sides w/bread included. If not for the lack luster "slack and cheese" I would have easily given this joint a 5star rating. So when I think of The South or the midwest I think of BBQ. This is not something the rest of the country excels in, and so I was excited to live amongst great bbq for a few years. Of course, when I moved here it turns out that Augusta is supposedly some sort of BBQ dead space, where there is no good BBQ around. That is, until one day the God of BBQ said, let there be a barn, and whoa let it be filled with great BBQ. And so it was. The atmosphere is clean, friendly, and warm. The food is delicious, fast, and reasonably priced. You walk in and order from the counter, pay, and sit down. Someone comes out quite quickly with your order. There is also a bunch of sauces to choose from, each better than the last. I had a hard time picking which one I liked more, so I kinda just used them all. The food, oh, the food. It was good. Smoked Turkey Breast is THE best I've ever had in my life! The meat is so flavorful, tender, moist and juicy - no sauce is ever needed!
