Poor service and terrible drinks! Recently visited this location (our first mistake) with a friend and we decided to sit at that bar so we did not have to wait for a table. The bar was not busy and had two bartenders Sarina and a guy whose name we did not catch. We requested two "premium" margaritas to start which were pure sugar and disgusting, clearly the bartender needs more training. Hence I gave mine to my friend who has a pallet on the sweeter side. Then we ordered dinner which was edible but nothing to call home about, but our dirty plates sat in front of us for a good hour. We told the manager Samantha who did not take it seriously and made excuses for her incompetent staff. The best part about the night was watching the Olympics on TV, so if you don't have a TV this may be your only reason to visit this location. read more

Who puts a scented plug-in in a restaurant? I am not culinary expert but I thought that was common sence. I came to The 99 with a coworker for a quick lunch and was sorry I did. I got sick to my stomach with the powerful scents coming from the air fresheners and mixing with the smell of the food. What do they need to disguise with those air fresheners anyway? While the staff is friendly the food is salty, bland, processed, and boring. The worst of all the chains. Come here only for drinks, if you must. When you walk in, be prepared for the hostess to be suspicious of you--suspicious enough for her to tell you so, but not suspicious enough for her NOT to tell you that your server will be right over with the specials, but I just HAVE to tell you about the Prime Rib Special! You can upgrade for $3 and get the 3- course meal with a dessert! It's great. Your server will arrive; it will be her second day, and she won't know how much the Prime Rib is, but she'll check. Sorry, we don't do that till 4:30 tonight! OMG so sorry! Can I get you a drink? A mimosa? I'll be right back! I'm so sorry; we don't have Champagne. What's sparkling wine? Sorry. Here comes lunch! Their (non-alcoholic) drinks are always great for almost craving that I have... Mango iced tea - sweet, almost southern-style sweet tea like with strong mango flavors. Strawberry iced tea - light on the strawberries and on calories, but still satisfying. Made with 0 cal Lipton iced green tea, thrown on ice. Great thirst-quencher. Strawberry lemonade - an all-time bf staple... the occasional crushed strawberry bits make it all worth it. The "oh-no mojitos" were ok, but not great. I'll stick with the flavored iced teas... pomegranate iced tea is next on the list. All-star steakburger is delicious and really hits the spot when you're craving a burger with the works. BUT - there was no caramelized onions on ours when we got it a few days ago... perhaps a kitchen mistake? It was good enough that I ate through almost half of the burger when I noticed I didn't get any onions. Buffalo chicken tenders - are tender, meaty, and spicy! ohh - thank goodness for refills on the beverages! Seafood chowder is delicious, with a creamy homemade feel that is comforting on cold nights. French onion soup was not as great. I had almost no broth in my cup and it was a wet piece of bread with melted cheese and onion pieces. I've made better soup myself using the microwave! This is not the only 99 I have been too but they're pretty much all the same. Out of all the grill/pub chains (Chili's, T.G.I. Friday's etc.) this is my least favorite. I found the food bland and not at all up to par with the way they advertised it. It was pretty disappointing and it kinda sucked having to pay for food I didn't have the appetite to finish. I had to pick up two orders of food in Waltham tonight. Neither of them worked out. I went to the 99 first followed by Absolutely Asia. I ordered the calypso shrimp and it tasted very good but when I got towards the bottom of the tropical dipping sauce that came with it there were chunks of blue cheese and a piece of bacon. That's disgusting. I also had a "full rack" of ribs which included six ribs. I've never had a full rack that didn't include twelve ribs until today. I complained that only six ribs were in my "full rack" and was passed to the manager who kindly argued with me that "a full rack varies. You could get between 10-14." When I told him I only had six he hesitated, then told me I could come back and he would give me a few more. This extra rack must have been from a dwarf pig - the bones were smaller than my pinky. I was always a little naive, I never quite grasped where the 99 in "99 Restaurant" came from. I was always too embarrassed to ask. But I went here tonight with my girlfriend, and now I know. Turns out, it's the average age of their patrons. I can't make that a mark against the restaurant itself, but they could solve the problem if they wanted to: just take out the wheelchair access and the average age drops to 60, or anyone who has had only one hip replaced instead of both. Or they could stop offering free oxygen tank refills with the purchase of any drink. Now, granted, the restaurant itself is fine. It's no modern marvel, but it is actually pretty nice inside. My girlfriend and I had a good time since we tend to always have laughs no matter where we are. It was mainly me making AARP jokes and her telling me to stop talking so loud, but I don't think we were within range of anyone's hearing aids anyway, so we had a fun time. Our waiter was nice, I'd say he did his job really well, I can't imagine it's super easy getting excited to go to work at a senior center every day, but he was attentive and offered a different soup when we weren't thrilled with the lobster bisque, so I do respect him for doing his job well when I'm sure it isn't the thrill of his life. The rest of our meal was fine, I had a burger and she had the country fried chicken, both were good. All in all this place is decent. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to avoid either. Wouldn't recommend it for a first date unless you met on Ourtime.com, in which case, going here is a must. P.S. I actually think that this is a great worn-down "truck driver stop" place. They have really good steak tips: very rich and tasty. I am not comparing it to star steak houses. The sundae is huge: what a "I already consumed so much calories and feel like a pig so why should I stop?" type of dessert. The staff here is usually bored as hell and the crowd is OK. We have done take-or for over a year at this 99 because the food is pretty good, but the service is horrendous. Every single time there had been at least one issue with our order, from things being incorrect, to missing items. We generally don't pick busy nights and tonight takes the cake. I ordered two items off the menu, nothing special required and asked for curbside. I sent my husband, who waited for almost ten minutes before going inside to find out what was going on. The folks working there were just chatting, so they weren't busy, but apparently could be bothered to look on the screen to see a car waiting. And they missed the second item on my order! So my husband and kid had to wait while they made it and they still did it wrong because he said no fries because he's gluten free (asked for a gluten free bun too, hopefully we got it) and they still gave us fries. I'm not sure how hard it is to enter an order on a computer while someone is giving it to you over the phone, but clearly it's rocket science. read more

Let me start with saying that I typically love the 99. I love the wings and the 99 always has the coldest beers (this one included). My experience with this particular 99 though was less than stellar. Our service was extremely slow and our waiter was often no where to be found. We waited for 10 minutes at our table before anyone even came over (not even water). We ordered the wings (yum!) and the balsamic glazed grilled chicken dinner. When my grilled chicken came, I cut into the breast and it was RAW! It was an immediate turn off for me, you can get seriously ill from eating raw chicken and it's not safe to serve under cooked food to customers. Since I do typically like the 99 I MIGHT be willing to give this place another shot but I would not recommend this particular 99 after my experience. read more

I want to personally congratulate the cooks in the back for this below average dinner. They were able to successfully keep the poor cooking of steaks streak I have going now with their help it is 20 straight steaks that have been cooked incorrectly. Best think of the night server was cute and mozzarella stick came out quick, well if you call 5 mins for apps quick. Entrees were more so like 15 mins after appetizers. Poor service I ordered the chopped steak, for those of you like myself this is similar to a salisbury steak or hamburger for layman terms. The food we ordered was very good. It was honestly much better than I was expecting since it was a diner. I really like going to diners and I know they can be very hit or miss given the day and time you go, but I have to say I'd eat here again. The service was a little slow, but not bad at all considering the number of people that come in. I think the food was especially good for the price though. With a week at hand and the passing of my Mother In Law, we needed a venue to suit our needs. My wife and I felt that the typical local, choice of many did not offer what we were looking for. Out of the Blue, my wife Brenda suggested we look at the Ninety Nine. We made a trip to the restaurant, asked to speak to a manager and was met by Jim. We told him what we needed and without a miss in step, our needs were answered. Well we arrived a bit early on the day we had booked and with a mere phone call the doors were opened and coffee was ready for all. The service was spot on and the general manager Frank was watching every detail. Everyone ordered what they wanted and all enjoyed the afternoon. To my surprise, I was greeted by Jim the manager that set this up. He came in on his day off to make sure all was well.. It was Jim, Brenda and I tip our hat to you.. I have to admit I am not a fan of American chains however this place surely surprised me. Not only do they have great prices on meals such as $9.99 entrees and additional soup and dessert for an additional $3.49 the food is actually good! They have incredible portions that will surely last you for 2 meals. The customer service is excellent. I have never seen a place so generous on making your meal perfect even if there's hardly anything wrong with the meal. Not to mention if you're in a rush or don't want to dine in, they have a great Curb-Side To Go where you can order over the phone 15 minutes beforehand and then park in the designated area where you can pay and receive your food.Be Aware - it does get busy Friday and Saturday night. I highly recommend the prime rib that's only available Thursday - Sunday, it's a hefty portion and delicious. Their gold fever tenders are also addicting and their salads are hefty and filling. The reason why I didn't put a 5 star is because it's not over-the-top amazing with different varieties. It has the conventional American pub/cuisine but with great portions and prices. read more

3 Stars for the Food and 1 more for the memories (the 99 in worcester was my high school hang out). Fairly standard but fairly tasty pub grub. The other night we had the boneless buffalo wings and potato skins samplers. An unhealthy delight. Also they have IBC root beer and not a bad wine selection for a casual chain. The kitchen is open late 11 or 12 so it's a nice late night we need food option. This location seems ultra new and the restaurant bit is dominanted by very high, very private booths. The food was great. I had the buttered lobster roll and my wife got a southwest salad and french onion soup. For an appetizer, we split the potato skins. First, we have relocated to Washington, DC and haven;t lived in New England for over 2 years, so when it comes to the ocean delicacies of the Northeast, we're deprived. The lobster roll was phenomenal. It was huge! I would bargain it was about twice the size of your traditional JJ Nissen New England style hot dog roll. The thing was loaded with lobster meat. I washed down this treat with the strawberry iced tea. My craving for more seafood was fed and I was a happy camper. The potato skins we split were ok. I prefer the sloppy obviously home-made jobbers that have been harder to come by. My wife didn't rave about her salad, but did say that it was good. I will eat there again and will recommend it to friends. When you're in Waltham, you can't go wrong at the Ninety-nine and if the Red Sox win, Kids eat free deal is a bargain for parents. read more

Wow, these folks work very hard! I (along with some other members of my family) was invited to the 99 by a family member from out-of-state. That night it was not particularly crowded, but there were many families with young kids. The waiters/waitresses worked very hard to please all those kids and still had the time to make sure that everything on our orders was just right for us. Very courteous and helpful! read more

We use their take out service most frequently. We really like the 9.99 entre special. Our favorites are the fish tacos and the New Orleans shrimp dish. They are sometimes so busy that there is a delay in having the food ready for pick up. They say that it will 15 to 20 mins but often it is 30 mins. The front office staff are really helpful and do the best to get the orders out quickly. I will keep on ordering from there. read more

We had a pretty bad experience at the 99 Restaurant today. I hate to do this, but I have a laundry list of why. 1) The waitress never brought my water. 2) We got an appetizer that included potato skins and boneless buffalo chicken, but had to ask for something (i.e., bleu cheese) to dip the buffalo chicken. 3) Our son's mac and cheese (the kids meal) came out cold. Luckily he didn't mind. 4) The plate that had his mac and cheese bowl and applesauce was dirty. It had some red sauce caked on it. 5) The food came out poorly paced. The waitress asked if we'd like our son's meal to come out with the appetizer. That was nice of her to ask and we said yes. But, his food came out before the appetizer and he was almost done with his meal by the time the appetizer came out. He was completely done by the time our main courses came out. 6) My husband's wrap was supposed to contain BBQ sauce and cheese but it had neither making it inedibly dry. He asked the waitress for a side of BBQ sauce and it never arrived. She came back asking if we were ready for the check, but my husband was still waiting for his BBQ sauce! The manager was kind enough to remove it from our bill, but our experience was already really soured. 7) I ordered the mac and cheese with chicken and broccoli. The mac and cheese part was fine but the chicken was so remarkably bland. It had no seasoning! 8) When I went to use the restroom, there was some kind of small flood in the middle of the floor. The sinks were making a banging sound and had trays over them, seemingly indicating that they were out of order. The hand sanitizer in the hallway outside of the bathrooms was empty, too. No note of apology on the bathroom door or anything explaining that the sinks were out of order. The only reason it gets 2 stars instead of one was that I liked the buffalo chicken tenders and potato skins, my husband liked his mashed potatoes, my son loved his cold mac and cheese, and the manager removed my husband's wrap from the bill. COLDEST BEER EVER...need I say more? My co-workers and I have an undeniable love for the 99 in Waltham and it has become a weekly tradition. Once 4 o'clock strikes on Friday afternoon we b-line it to the 9's. When I fall asleep on Thursday nights, I often dream about that cold pint of Guinness and gold fever wings...knowing that my dreams will become a reality on Friday. The bartenders (especially Rick) are friendly and helpful, and the food and drink always exceed expectations. I love the 99 so much I have officially renamed Fridays "9's day". My wife and I dine at the 99 occasionally, and in general, it's good food at a decent price. My last visit to the 99 might be our last for quite a while, though. Our level of disappointment is based more on false advertising that they sent to us, than on the quality of the food. They recently sent an email stating, "Order a colossal lobster roll or a hot buttered lobster roll and get a FREE THREE COURSE MEAL. This weekend only!" To my wife and me, that sounded like if we ordered a lobster roll, we would also receive a three course meal. When we tried to take advantage of this, the waitress clarified that we would not actually receive a separate three course meal - instead, the lobster roll would include two additional courses, making it, technically, a three course meal. She then chuckled, and said, "You expected that you were going to receive the lobster roll AND a three course meal?" Um, yes... Based on the advertisement, that was exactly what we were expecting. If adding on 2 sides was what they intended, the ad should have read something to the effect of, "purchase a lobster roll, and get that upgraded to a three course meal for free." She did not offer to honor the advertisement, or call the manager over. When I expressed my disappointment via the online survey link listed on the receipt, I checked the online box asking the 99 to contact me to discuss further, but nobody ever did. There are many choices for casual dining in the Waltham area, so we'll be eating elsewhere for a while. read more

I spent many evenings during college at the 99 Restaurant for some unknown reason. Probably because we were too lazy to drive any further. It's a chain, it's greasy, and the food is bland as hell. That's about all you can say. They "remodeled" it a couple of years ago to make it "cooler", but it's still no more than an Applebee's to me. The drinks are pretty decent though, so at least it's got that going for it. read more

We go to the 99 in Waltham about three times a month. It is close by and food was good. However the last few times the service has been awful. Last two times we had to ask someone to send a waitress over. Then they did not serve our meals at the same time. The wait staff changes weekly.
