Have loved their fruit cakes so I gave their Cappuccino Cake a try (receipt noted cappuccino while display case noted mocha). Tasted like cheap instant coffee, very bitter and grainy. Appreciate that they provide a plastic serving utensil, I would only recommend their fruit cakes.

I have been to many 99 ranch markets on the West Coast for decades! This one in Edmonds is close to my area so I go there all the time for years. Always appreciated the variety of food and the competitive pricing here. There is also a bakery where you can purchase Asian pastries and a cafeteria where you can purchase ready-to-eat cooked dishes. It can get quite crowded during weekends but it was OK when we went there on a Tuesday afternoon. According to my mom, she enjoys a 5% senior discount on Tuesdays. In general, this market is clean and spacious. However, it is not uncommon to find staff mistakes such as marked-down prices not showing up when ringing up at the register or you can not find the prices for items on the rack (see pictures as an example) which all cause a lot of confusions. Parking is always easy as there is a parking lot.

Adventured to the 99 Ranch Market in Edmonds on Highway 99 yesterday evening to check it out and get a few spontaneous picks. The parking lot is a shared lot and was well-marked. The entrance was about center under the the 99 Ranch Market sign on the building. Once inside, finding my way around was relatively straightforward and items were methodically sectioned. Fun to see the seafood tanks with live seafood in them. The workers were friendly and professional. I went with a Daifuku mochi aka (red bean cake and a product of Japan), which was located near the Tillamook cheese. The price was $2.59 and it was absolutely delicious. The mochi was soft and thick enough I could taste the mochi and the red bean filling smooth and sweet. I also got Butterfly tamarind candy (Tiao Peng Trading Inc. and a product of Thailand). Price was $1.59. The flavor was intense and made my eyes water in a good way, and the packaging was very cool.

Living nearby, I've had the luxury of accessible Asian groceries all the time. I come by less often these days but I still remember all the great experiences wandering around, finding nostalgic good I've had in Taiwan, stuffing my to-go container at the hot deli, and the amazing bakery that used to (maybe still does) have half off after 7pm or so. It's always a good time here exploring new and old goods alike. They have senior discounts early in the week and now college student discounts Fridays. Ranch 99 (yes that's what I call it) seems to be modernizing a bit as there's also a new mobile app. Great selection of produce, fruits, vegetables, tofu, fish, meat, dessert, cakes, ice cream, bread, snacks, you name it.

Great selection of stuff, and great prices. Fairly clean. The store is a bit disorganized though, and some sections smell strongly of meat.

I'm not sure if it's because something changed on the side of the bakery (maybe recipe or personnel changes?) or on my side, having tried more bakeries around the area. On our last visit we bought two loaves of bread to accompany a butter tasting. Both loaves I found to be not nearly as high quality as I remember previously. Pane Bello ($9) - The crust basically doesn't exist in this bread. It's soft and leathery and doesn't give that satisfying crispness of a well baked bread. The interior, while having good crumb structure, is particularly dry and almost crumbly. The taste is mild, perfect for pairing with higher end butters. (3/5) Parmesan Black Pepper Sourdough ($9) - This batard has similar texture as compared to the Pane Bello. It has the addition of plenty of black pepper baked inside, spaced out rather evenly, allowing a peppery bite every time. There's salty and fatty parmesan baked on top, giving a caramelized salty umami. It definitely has more flavor than the Pane Bello, but suffers from the same textural issues. (3/5) We purchased both loaves at 10AM on a Sunday morning and they were consumed within 2.5 hours, so I don't think it's an issue with storage. I ate a bit of their regular foccacia at a work event too. It has a good crispy exterior and is salted well on the top. Unfortunately the interior isn't the best, having a really dense, chewy crumb. I'm honestly not sure what happened. I really loved The Cottage when I first moved here 1.5 years ago. Now? I have a number of bakeries I'd choose over here in a heartbeat.

In long My little coffee side trips in this neighborhood will continue for a while. I'm now regularly in Edmonds with just enough time to grab a cup. This is the first sit-down place I've hit. I had just enough time to get something to go. It's a modest older building a couple blocks away from the main drag, and in Edmonds, a couple blocks is all you need for serious peace and quiet. On a Monday afternoon, there wasn't even much vehicle traffic on the road outside, but the locals were out in force--couples, groups, everybody cheerful. All ages. There are maybe 20 seats in here, with that many more outside. First thing you see when you walk in is the little farmer's-market type merch display that some local independent coffee shops often seem to have. Stickers, mugs, hats. I am anti-clutter overall, but still a sucker for stickers and mugs, and almost bought some stuff here. The kids behind the counter are super nice, super upbeat without being overcaffeinated. Very warm and genuine. My sister and I took our time puzzling through exactly what we wanted and the dude was smiling the whole time, got the order down perfectly. Couple minutes later it was ready. The drip coffee was fantastic, really hit the spot for my sis. It was late in the day so I got a heavily modified cup of tea (bergamot with lavender, something else, and almond milk). I've never had tea any way but black, ever, and this was delicious. I've never had tea with a cute name, either--"Edmonds Fog"--but that just made it easier to order. We were out the door with that and a really tasty jam biscuit for under $15. When I have time to park and go in to order, this place will be tough to beat for sure.

I ordered my usual Mocha Breve, and the coffee was surprisingly good - great flavor and just the right temperature. But let's chat about the service... As some reviews suggested, the service was a major letdown! The front servers seemed more annoyed than a cat in a bath. I asked for a bagel on the side, and both servers were less than thrilled to help me or even mention that I had to toast it myself! Apparently, there's a DIY toasting station for your pastries. The kicker? I ended up tipping 15% even though I did pretty much all the work - toasting the bagel and spreading the cream cheese. Which btw the bread even toasted is hard as a rock! It's a local joint, and the lady next to me clearly a local , was practically tapping her foot, trying to rush me as I waited for the cashier to make sure she's ready to take my order. Would I recommend this place? You might have a different experience so go. Am I gonna do a drive to comeback probably not. Don't believe the hype.

There were just two others onsite. There were a lot of takeout customers, including regulars, that I observed while onsite at a nearby two top. My mocha was decent, the pain au chocolat was fresh, good flavor and texture, despite being pretty hollow. The photo I took created quite the illusion, looked like it had mass quantities of melty chocolate. Despite the bakery/cafe has an unassuming, now faded yellow exterior and well worn interior, French and Vietnamese inspired Grand Pere Bakery has quite the longevity record and staying power since March 2014. Pro tip: make sure to show up in the morning for better selection for both sweet and savory items. Their pastries are baked fresh onsite, but I've made the mistake of showing up midday and towards closing and their pastry case would be slim pickings. They also have a great variety of beverages available too. Espresso, teas, and milk teas as examples. The mocha has improved, very coffee forward and not cloyingly sweet. Just needs to be hotter temp wise, but that's just me. My favorite go tos has been variable depending on availability, but recent visits have been their ham and cheese croissants. I greatly appreciate the offer to have it warmed up if dining onsite. It's just a strange pairing to place such tasty pastries on a paper plate and then provided flatware, knife & fork or just a fork.
