Came here on New Year's Day to hang with friends after we walked in Oakland Cemetery. Picked this spot because it offered a good selection of veggie/ vegan food. For a "dive" bar, it is remarkably well run- I think that is the vibe though I understand it has a long history and as the neighborhood prospered, Estoria evolved without losing its character. People were seated outside, even on this cold day, and there was a steady stream of patrons while we were there - clearly a local favorite- and I can see why: seating is perfect for large groups with an abundance of long tables, a corner couch which could probably accommodate 8-10, and also smaller tables, bar spots for the solo patron. I had the portobello mushroom French dip sandwich which came with a generous portion of perfectly crunchy fries. I was so pleased that the chef was easy on the cheese, and the sandwich was not at all greasy - you never know when you order mushrooms with cheese at a bar. The mushrooms had all the meaty Unami flavor I wanted. My carnivorous friend tried it, and loved it.) The dipping sauce was very good, and not greasy. I wish that it was in a paper container like my sandwich- but that's my only suggestion for change. My husband had the special: a Good Luck veggie bowl with black eyed peas, collard greens and sweet potatoes with a cornbread muffin. Oh.My. God it was good. I didn't order it because it did not suit my mood for indulgence- was I wrong! The collards were literally the best collards I have ever had- they had a little zest & fire to them - just the lightest touch. I would eat any vegetable this chef prepared. I was pleased my husband allowed me to sample his bowl of deliciousness. Everyone in our party enjoyed their food - my friend who ordered grilled cheese moaned out loud when he bit into it. I'm writing this review to set your expectations, not to encourage this establishment to change their ways. I've passed this place for five years & today thought I'd review their menu on my walk to the belt line. After determining this was counter service I ordered a cheeseburger from the menu from the bar. The bartender quickly recognized I was a newbie. It was served in a to-go box with no napkins or utensils & while it was deliciously prepared, this is not a restaurant. It's a dive that happens to have a food menu. It's always a good time if you plan on visiting 97 Estoria! It's one of my favorite dive bars. It's located in a fun area right by Krog St tunnel which I highly suggest! We came in a Sunday afternoon. The food was reasonably priced and fine but not amazing. I got a burrito. The burrito was okay had some shredded chicken but not too much flavor or spice. It did have a side of salsa with it. The tables are all outside with no table service or cleaning between people. Many people are here for drinks, not food. We ordered at the counter and we're told to come back 15 min or so later to pick up our food matching it with our receipt number. 97 Estoria isn't trying to be anything other than what it is; a divey, late-night, cheap watering hole! At least I remember the drinks being cheap with a good amount of variety. They are doing fabulously during the pandemic; you can order your drinks from a takeout window and then most people go outside where they have fire pits/ fire bath tubs to keep you warm. I think the inside is still open for the less COVID safe, but the bar is not and the people I've seen inside are always pretty spaced apart. They only let one person in at a time to use the bathroom and enforce masks. I gotta say I'm pretty impressed! I, unfortunately, must add that they had a bad roach problem when I came here once before; like several huge ones crawling up the walls and different places, soo I would not try the food unless they've gotten it under control. I've enjoyed 97 Estoria in the past (veg hot dog is so good) but our recent trip was such a pleasant surprise! The variety of menu items from OkYaki were so enticing! We went with the combo which includes a scallion pancake, yakisoba and protein choice. We added chicken and extra vegetables. While waiting for our dinner, my boyfriend enjoyed a Kirin and we took in the beautifully socially distant space. The food was EXCELLENT. The scallion pancake was savory and warm, perfect for a brisk fall day. The yakisoba and chicken were the best I've had on this side of town. 've been coming to Estoria for a few years now. It's a great casual hangout bar. I visited last Saturday and my group stayed until close. We went ahead and quickly paid our bills to try to get out of the way of the staff. Upon reviewing my bill later, i realized that I had been charged 20% gratuity and had be tipping the whole time with absolutely NO mention from the staff. I'm not sure if this is something that was new or if it's been around for a while and I've never noticed, but every other group member left additional tips and were also unaware they had already been charged gratuity. As a bartender myself and someone who comes from a family of restaurant owners, I understand what goes in to restaurant service and I always tip accordingly. I found it to be extremely misleading and shady to charge a 20% gratuity fee and not have a sign or staff notify customer upon giving them their bill. Seems like bad practice. read more

You won't find a fancy/boujee vibe here but you will find a great wait staff who are engaging and at times, hilarious. Great drink deals during the week and good specials are always on the table. The wings here are some of the best in Atlanta and they do not charge through the roof for them like so many other places in the city. Over the years, I've grown to love this city, its people and its watering holes. 97 Estoria has earned the spot as my favorite place to meet friends and hang out on their newly expanded patio underneath their string lights on a balmy spring night. The beers are always cold, their cocktails are an unexpected and innovative delight and their menu satisfies (do not sleep on their green chili!). Totally a cool local bar, the place while I was there in the day was dead quiet, with a little Dj and music setup. The bartender was keeping the vibe alive, very sweet and attentive. We didn't go in to get trashed, I ended up ordering an Atlanta cider, which was nice and refreshing. As the bar tender said, "very ciders". I'm not a drinker, so I was just there to vibe a bit. I wasn't expecting it, after perusing the menu I was toying with selecting either the black bean burger or the vegan riblet sammie, I finally decided to go for broke and pick the riblet, balls to the wall, I figured it would either be the tastiest or nastiest experience of my life. Boy am I delighted it was the tastiest decision ever... As I powered through my super-sized Newcastle I was checking out the decore, and, if I'm not mistaken, quite a bit of the groovy wares are handmade, the booths seem to be made with love, and upholstered with crocodile, as do the stained wood room dividers, and that kind of craftsmanship makes my heart swell. Add the Patsy Cline on the jukebox, the graff in the bathrooms, and the cushy couches and its mathematically impossibly for you not to have a great time here. The deep fried pickles were crispy, hot, and tasty, but the real winner for the evening was the vegan riblet sammie, which arrived to my table glistening in bbq sauce, paired with caramelized onions and pickles, and accompanied by a side of homemade steak fries. I added a little mayo to the ciabatta bun, which is rather un-vegan of me(but I'm a vegetarian and I love mayo so suck it), cut the sammie in half one more time and took my first bite, the faux riblet was a little crispy, which is a textural element I can always appreciate. The flavor was insane, the faux meat was seasoned well and super moist, the bbq was a little heavy on the liquid smoke, but at this point I could care less, I was satisfied beyond belief, and as much as I wanted to finish the whole sammie, it was not possible. There's something suffocating about 97 Estoria, and I've never been quite able to place what. First off, the parking here is almost always a tremendous pain-- you usually have to park down the street, if even that is open. Though there is a large patio open in the summer, and a smaller gathering area immediately upon entrance, mostly everyone crowds into the main room. I've never felt comfortable here. The tables are all on top of one another and you have to fight your way to the bar, unless you feel like waiting for a server, who may or not be paying attention that night. The traditional crew that gathers here is your typical mob of hipsters. It's like a fashion spread out of Urban Outfitters ads, only with more tattoos. Most nights they have a DJ playing music loud enough to make conversation that much more difficult. Beyond that, I can remember at least three specific times I couldn't get into the bathroom because someone had locked it, probably for obvious nostril-related reasons. The food is pretty good. If you're looking for a place to sit around and feel boxed in, not to mention surrounded by people who are desperate to be seen and perhaps publicly groped by their drunk Strokes-reject boyfriend, this is probably where you want to go. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the atmosphere in this place. It is like you are stepping back in time to a swank 60-70's lounge, and the vintage furniture and ambiance is a huge welcoming feature. Where it loses a star for me, is sadly the food. I have had a few things there, and some of them are awesome (the vegan nuggets rock my face off, but when they come out... that is a different story. Probably because they are vegan?), and others are just okay. It isn't that they are bad, they are just okay. Interestingly enough, I ordered the Thai green beans as a side once, because I was trying to be all "healthy", only to find out that those are breaded and friend green beans. So watch out for that.
