I love a good smash burger, and 858 is IT. 858 starts with a guaranteed flavorful, juicy beef patty (or 2 if you want to make it a double!) with a melt-in-your-mouth brioche bun. I ordered the American burger (with your customary lettuce, cheese, tomato, grilled onions and thousand island dressing) and my boyfriend ordered the 858 burger which came with bacon onion jam and umami sauce. I also ordered sweet potato fries which had great texture and seasoning. Can't wait to come back to try their milkshakes! Tip: 858 shares the space with Ferlini Coffee--do yourself a favor and support both businesses! read more

Wish i could get a refund!! Got a cookies and cream milkshake, my boyfriend got this for me for $8. Expensive. Hoping the quality would be good. Nope! Tastes like milk and cream. Nothing about cookies and cream in here. Asked for extra oreos, and they said it's A PRE MIX?! Why on earth is there a pre shake mix? Terrible overpriced spot. read more

I wanted to like 858 Burger Joint since it is new, but unfortunately it was a pretty disappointing experience. The food was okay, but not good enough for the price. I paid around $26 for a double bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, and a fountain soda, which feels high for the quality and overall experience. The burger itself was not bad, but the fries tasted like basic frozen bag fries, and the onion rings were only okay. The service also did not help. The ketchup dispenser was empty, and when my wife asked for ketchup, the employee just handed her a bunch of packets instead of refilling it. She also seemed more focused on watching the Mexico World Cup game than helping customers. I understand wanting to watch the game, but at these prices, the service should be better. The self-order kiosk also asked for a tip, which felt odd considering there was not much actual service involved. Overall, the food was passable, but the value and service were not there. For the price, I expected a lot more. I would not recommend going out of your way to come here. read more

Finally a true smash burger!! We stopped here after some shopping and ordered the classic with dirty fries. The shop itself is sort of on the corner of a small parking lot and the parking situation is not good. It's right by The Taco Stand so the area itself is pretty busy! Nonetheless when we found a spot we headed in and loved the vibe. It felt very modern diner. The food itself was pretty good!! A well seasoned patty that was actually smashed so the cook and crisp were perfect. The dirty fries were also delicious. Absolutely filled with goodness. We will be back again the next time we want a smash burger. read more

I stopped in for a quick lunch because sometimes a girl just needs a burger. I've never been in and I was pretty pleased I followed my growling tummy in. I got a smash burger with fries and it was solid. The fries were perfect and it was a damn good burger that came up quick. Staff were friendly and it was a chill clean spot. Nice seats outside bench style and I was happy and full when I left. read more

858 Burger specializes in smashburgers and I think it lives up to the hype! I don't know why the rating is so low but I'm glad I got to try it out for myself. The menu is pretty small so all of their focus goes into making delicious burgers. I ordered the American, a classic burger with cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. Since smashburger patties usually are pretty thin, I added a second one. Now this was a hefty burger! The brioche buns were buttery and fluffy and the patties were crispy along the edges. We also got an order of fries and onion rings and these could be some of the best fries in San Diego! I tried a bit of the 858 Burger which has bacon onion jam. I was expecting to enjoy the sweet, savory flavors but I didn't think the jam added much to the burger overall. Also, if you order the Classic, just be aware that it doesn't come with the usual veggies. It's a little deep in downtown La Jolla but I think it's worth the drive! I'll need to come back and give their milkshakes a try. read more

I've had smashed burgers before but these were smashed into nothingness! Literally less than 1/8" thick patty. My slice of American cheese was thicker than the patty. There were 4 normal slices of pickles on the burger, which amounted to more beef. A vegetarian burger would have more beef it would seem. There were few customers in there yet it still took about 20 mins to get our food. Very disappointing because the other elements of the burger were good. read more

JUST THE MILKSHAKES (5 stars) Love me a good milk shake... even if it can make my tummy turn! Skipped the food and went for the shake. They offered 3 flavors (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry) and I asked to have all three in one, why not?! I felt I was the first to ever ask for that because they seemed like they never tried before but happy to try. And that neopolitan flavor just hits! MILKSHAKE ($8.80) - the shake wasn't too thick not too runny, solid enough to be a shake but soft enough to sip thru the large straw without concaving your cheeks. HIGHLY RECOMMEND Until the next review... read more

If you are hunting for a new burger spot in San Diego that actually lives up to the hype, 858 Burger is a must-visit. Located right in the heart of downtown La Jolla, it has quickly secured a spot in my top 5 burger joints. The Logistics Be prepared for the La Jolla hustle. Parking is scarce, so expect to find a spot on the street and walk a bit to the shop. Trust me--the walk is worth it. The Food The Milkshake: Do yourself a favor and try not to finish your shake before the food arrives. They are hand-spun and made to order; mine had these incredible chocolate bits mixed in. I accidentally polished off 80% of it while waiting for my burger because it was just that good. The Fries: These are addictive. The texture and crunch reminded me of a high-end version of Rally's or Checkers seasoned fries (which I already love), but elevated. The American Double ($12): Finding a burger of this quality for $12 in La Jolla is a win in itself. The meat was perfectly seasoned, the veggies were crisp, and the sauce was spot on. Most importantly, the bun held its integrity--no sogginess or staleness here. The ratios are dialed in perfectly. Presentation & Atmosphere Whether you eat there or take it to go, they care about the details. My burger was carefully wrapped and tucked into its own individual box, keeping the presentation clean. If you stay, they have both indoor and outdoor seating to enjoy the downtown vibe. Bottom Line: If you're looking for something new and high-quality, 858 Burger is well worth the drive. read more

While waiting for my husband to order tacos from the Taco Stand, the kids decided to get food from 858Burger. It was our first time here. I ordered the 858 Burger with Fries. The food was received pretty fast. The smash patty itself was a little on the sweeter side bc of the bacon jam so it wasn't my cup of tea. The fries were super crispy but lacking in salt. The burgers and fries are on the greasier side. I'd come back to try their onion rings and classic burger though just to get a baseline on their regular smash burgers. read more

Good little burger spot in the heart of La Jolla. Connected to a Empanada spot which is good too. Customer service was good, a young tall (I'm only 5'5 so everyone is tall to me) Latina girl helped us & she was very helpful & nice. We got 3 burgers, Classic, American & the 858, I tasted all 3 & they were good. My fav was the American, wife was the 858 so she took mine & I took her American. And make it a double if you can eat like me, it's worth it. My kids loved their classics & love their Dirty Fries they said it was better then In & Out Animal Style Fries & I agree. We also had their onion rings they were amazing, try their ranch it's very good. We ate inside & it was really clean & spacious & a good vibe. Overall we liked it alot & will come back when we in LA Jolla. My kids who love the burgers from Shake Shack (similar style they smash burgers) said these burgers were as good but bigger which is a plus. Keep up the good work 858 & see you soon :) read more

Delicious smash burger!!!! I should have done the double patty as it's very thin on the thick, buttery brioche. Very tasty. They picture basic fresh cut fries here on some photos but mine were more beer battered style. Normally I don't like that kind of fry, but these were great! Just had an American burger again to see how it compared to when they first opened. It may seem like small changes. but the onion jam has been replaced by grilled onions, it now comes with 1000 island dressing and the bun is a little more substantial. The combination makes for a very filling single patty burger. It now ticks all the boxes. It reminds me a lot of the Bob's Big Boy burgers of my youth. With a side of onion rings and a delicious chocolate milkshake, it doesn't get any more American than this. In a good way... Shout out to Andrea (one of the owners) for continuing to tweak the menu. Nice job! read more

Here's a cleaner version you could post as a review while still sounding upset and direct: Me and my boyfriend went to 858 around 5:30 PM on 5/24/26 and got our food to-go to eat on the road. The first thing we noticed was how insanely greasy the burgers were. We used the self-order kiosk, so we didn't really interact with staff, but the employees looked overwhelmed even though the restaurant was only about a quarter full. The food itself was honestly about a 2/10, but I'm giving it a 0/10 because we both got sick afterwards. By the time we got home, we were nonstop vomiting. Definitely would not recommend this place. read more

Was worki g in La Jolla and saw a review from opening week so I had my cousin pick up some burgers and we tried them out! ONE STAR for their namesake 858 Burger featuring white cheddar cheese, bacon & onion jam and umami sauce. I absolutely loved this one although my cousin said it was too sweet. I got plenty of sweet, caramelized onion which I love!! Their classic burger was good too but very thin Pattie's was disappointing. I do understand these are smash burgers but these are paper thin. Fries were just basic...nothing special or crisp about them. Wished we got the onion rings instead. I thought the burgers were reasonably priced when I was looking at the online menu but when I saw what we got I think it isn't worth it. Unfortunately I think this place will be another restaurant next year (as this venue has been turned around 5 times in the time I've worked in La Jolla). I thought a burger joint would be the cure but there's nothing truly standout about this place. Sad about it. Burgers were just ok...not bad, not standout. read more

858 Burger - Left: 858 Burget...right: classic burger - Burgers Near Me - San Diego, California

858 Burger (named after the area code for La Jolla) has taken over the space where a short lived burger vendor had operated in the village of La Jolla. The suite was connected to an empanada business sharing the same main entrance and restroom. On-site parking was limited to a couple of spaces while the dining area had eight countertop seats adjacent to a window and enough tables to hold another couple of dozen diners. Three types of smashburgers and five sides were the savory menu offerings. Milkshakes, a chocolate chip cookie, and mini churros were the sweet treats. I picked a Classic smashburger with sweet potato fries for my meal. The burger was a beef patty dressed with American cheese, grilled onions, pickles, and thousand island sauce on a buttered brioche bun. The patty had crispy edges around the perimeter which was good. That being said, I thought the featured burger of the predecessor was a better product. The real disappointment was the sweet potato fries. They were soggy inside the cardboard cup and not worth $4.50 for the amount given. The service was okay as the wait to receive my food wasn't too long. The menu prices were similar to the previous business so that was a wash. I rated my experience at a three star level for 858 Burger. read more

The smash burger may be one of my favorite foods of all time. I've been to many smash burger spots throughout socal. Some charge a lot of money but make up for it with a lot of food. Some make a simple mouthwatering burger for a fair price. Unfortunately 858 Burger charged $12 for a small single patty smash burger. The burger tasted decent (7/10). But after eating it I was still hungry. I assumed for $12 the burger would come with a second patty. Otherwise the store was clean and the service was good. read more

We were in the mood for a snack and I pre-ordered a couple of orders of just fries. I'm glad I pre-ordered because the wait times are quite long. It was busy. It was loud. And it was clear that they were understaffed. There was one girl at the counter-- she was taking orders, processing payments, packing the orders, making the milkshakes and running food from the window to the tables. In the kitchen or looked like there was only one person working. That was it. The poor girl was running while attempting to get orders processed as quickly as possible. I genuinely felt bad for her. I was standing waiting for my order for about 15 min, and in the time it was oh so clear that they needed to hire another staff member to help at the front of house. The fries themselves were mediocre. The oil in the fries needed to be changed because the fries were coming out black. read more
