    Complimentary Chips and Salsa
    Jay M.

This small, unassuming restaurant at an old strip mall in Port Hueneme serves absolutely delicious Oaxacan cuisine. I've eaten here twice with family, and we enjoyed everything we've ordered thus far. FOOD: Complimentary Chips and Salsa: The chips were good the first time, but we received an old batch the second time we ate here. Their salsa was great both times, though. Horchata: 8 Regiones Comida Oaxaquena serves the best Horchata I have ever had!! The consistency and thickness is perfect, as is the flavor and sweetness. SO GOOD! Chile Verde: Good, but not the best I've had. The sauce was light and had a good acidity to it, while the pork was tender. More pork would've been great as the chunks I received were pretty small. Tlayuda 3 Carnes (Tasajo, Cecina, and Chorizo): Love it! The base is covered with delicious mole and refried beans, and is then topped with a generous amount of Oaxacan string cheese, cabbage, sliced avocado, sliced tomatoes, cilantro, and of course--meat! All 3 meats were delicious, but the chorizo was my favorite; it was bursting with flavor! I felt I was wrong for eating an entire Tlayuda by myself, especially after seeing a family of 4 share the same thing amongst themselves, but I really enjoyed it! 3 Al Pastor Tacos: The al pastor was okay, but not their marinade didn't appeal to us. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't something we'd order again either. However, we all agree the tortillas here are fantastic. Chile Colorado: Good! It's hard to turn down a full plate of tender pork ribs braised in a flavorful red sauce. Like the other combo, the Chile Colorado is served with rice, beans, and tortillas. We enjoyed this more than the Chile Verde. Pozole: Nice to see they serve Pozole Verde! You get a huge bowl with a generous serving of hominy, vegetables, and shredded chicken in a scratch-made chicken broth with good flavor. Combo Cabeza: Dee-lish-us! The cabeza was tender, plentiful, and certainly flavorful. Each combo plate comes with refried beans, rice, tortillas, and pickled jalapenos. This combo will fill you up for sure; I'd order it again. Chapulines Tacos: FINALLY! I've never had Chapulines before, so I couldn't pass on the opportunity. They were crispy and seasoned well, while the guacamole they were on was fresh and flavorful. Again, the homemade tortillas are amazing. Although our knowledge of Spanish is minimal, we were able to order everything we wanted. I didn't get her name, but the tall waitress (who might be the owner's daughter) is super friendly and can help you order. It sucks I don't live closer, but I'll definitely be back when I'm in Port Hueneme!

What a great little spot. I've been hearing so many great things about this place from all my friends. So glad I finally dropped by. Not the ideal location, but that's because I'm from the north side and this area is a bit of a ways. Great service and had ample seating area. We got there after the lunch rush so there was only a few other diners. Ordered the Tlayuda (highly recommended by friends) with 3 different kinds of meat. That's the best way to get it. Definitely out of this world and unlike anything I've ever eaten before. It basically looks like a pizza. We decided to shred all the meat then fold it in half and then cut into three pieces. One tlayuda fed 3 people and we were all quiet satisfied. I got the tamarindo drink and my friends got an horchata. I have to say that their horchata is hands down THE best I've ever tasted in my life. That's coming from someone who's had it in Mexico and even Guatemala. I will definitely be back to try other dishes. Based on the photos they have posted, it all looked mighty appetizing.

First time. I had the milanesa cemita. My first cemita ever actually. In terms of the meat It was stringy an hard to chew. Honestly would've been a good torta had the milanesa been on point. Guy inside also had no mask.

The Physical Plant is so unassuming that I must have passed this place hundreds of times but didn't know they existed. But now that I do know they exist, you can tell I love it on account of the many times I've been here since finding them out. Its humble location belies the gastronomical treats that await. The inside of the Restaurant (once you enter) measures roughly 12 feet wide by 30 feet deep. This comprises the dining area that holds approximately 30 small tables. Cozy. Once in, the wall in front of you, and above holds photos of several featured items. The Menu includes: Shrimp Dishes, Beef, Pork, Fish and other things. You can get the normal fare: Tacos, Burritos, etc., and what I like- any weekday or weekends- MENUDO! As far as I know, THEY'VE RECENTLY ADDED MY FAVORITE, pozole. "Aehhhh!" You might exclaim, "Sounds boring!" and you may have a point there. However, have you heard that Old Addage, "The taste is in the pudding?" Well, the taste is in the 'Taco', 'Pozole', 'Pescado', 'Camarones' and whatever else you see featured. Mind you all, this review is purely subjective in scope. If you choose to go eat there, you may have a whole different take, but I'm sure you'll be pleased. Happy Tacos! Thank You.

First time here, they were eager to please and he flavor was great! Huge tortillas and lots of ingredients are flown in from Oaxaca, including crickets!

My palate has been craving for Oaxacan food since I just visited this beautiful city two weeks ago were I was spoiled with genuine Oaxacan dishes. Intrigued by the great Yelp reviews, I drove to this nondescript restaurant, which is located in an old strip mall in Hueneme. The restaurant is clean, and its orange and blue walls are adorned with photographs of Oaxaca's colorful people and landscape. Pictures of their dishes, together with the price are displayed in the front wall for easy reference. For their mole de pollo, the chicken was deliciously tender and the black mole sauce was authentically close to the ones I tasted in Oaxaca. Their horchata was bursting with flavor and is probably one of the best tasting horchata I have ever had. Their server and chef, who I was told hails from Oaxaca, were genuinely warm and polite. Most of all, their prices are amazingly reasonable - a real value for money. I will definitely go back to sample their other offerings.

OH MY. I was craving Mexican food and this place surpassed my wildest dreams. It's Oaxacan cuisine, which I'm no expert in, but all the food is rich in flavor and everything is cooked to perfection. It's a hole-in-the wall place with pictures and cultural figures of Oaxaca. They also had such friendly service, I wanted to take the chef home with me! We ordered the chicken and carnitas empanadas, mole con pollo, tamal oaxaqueno, torta carnitas, which came with free chips and salsa. The salsa was spicey but I just couldn't stop eating it! Thankfully the horchata relieved the spicy. Their horchata has to be the best horchata I've tasted. It has a thicker consistency which I loved. Every single dish was so flavorful, our eyes lit up every time we tried something. It's definitely a unique twist on Mexican food, which I prefer better. Definitely bringing my foodie friends and family here. Me and my friend already picked what we're having for next time!

We decided to get out of our element and try something different. Chapulines (crickets) tacos. Food was good and prepared in a timely manner. Tamarindo was fresh and very sweet, too sweet for my liking. We will be back to try other dishes.

Pretty much the only place that haven't tried in Oxnard city...until yesterday…read more Let's start with the chips and salsa...always a good indicator of things to come. Wasn't the best, but far from bad. The chips were in one of those steel machines to keep warm, they were thin, crispy, and light salt, the way ALL tortilla chips should be. But they were a bit oily only negative. The salsa was cantina style seemed homemade, was good, zero spice/mild. (B+) Combo fajitas (friend order) it was a good tasting with a terrific plate of guac, pico, refried beans, and shredded cheese. Heck, you couldve made a meal from just the side plate wrap em up call it a veggie fajita party. Very filing and good (A-) Other friends had carne asada burrito, and a steak plate, both happy so assuming they are good. Service was outstanding by several individuals; checking in on order, refilling drinks, cleaning table, all workers are terrific and polite. I was ready for the 5-star goldenrod Neptune-trident throwdown, but my order, the torta (D-) was a complete trainwreck. Al pastor and a torta; took a double-jeopardy style gamble and crapped out, snake eyes big time. The bread was abysmal/ not fresh, the al pastor was ice cold and not memorable, meat fused to a cold hardened melted gooey cheese; send it back, replaced with carne asada, still came back cold (just don't get it.) so that item alone dragged it down a star. I was so full from the chips and salsa, sampling friends' food, and the side order of clam chowder (yes, in a Mex restaurant a first for me, was smoky and quite good too! (A-) that I just picked off some of the cold beef and ate that without the bread. Would I come back? Well, when seaside, I usually crave seafood like a nice fish n chips or something, but if I am ever craving Mex, will bring wife and son. Just will not touch the torta with a diez-foot pole amigo. They also have a salsa bar upon entrance which I completely forgot to pound once food came, shame on me once.

With that being said, I wanted to try it out. This was about 2 years ago prior to this visit I had today at this location. I jotted the note down after overhearing him talking about it while watching Netflix. When arriving, the environment outside is run down, old fashioned and in the scary graffiti, homeless surrounding. Parking is difficult to find, but we got lucky me and a colleague. The place is on a road side where parking it located a few streets between about 100 feet away. The surrounding had graffiti and loitering which was unpleasant and I would imagine it is worse at night, be careful here! Inside, a wonderful aroma excites you as you enter the restaurant. Booths all around and hard uncomfortable seats. A lot of people came here today on Sunday afternoon. Customer service was excellent, the guy at the front was very chill, polite and acted as if I was his homie, buddy or good friend. This is what I like. I ordered the birria of course, a meat drenched in a bunch of flavors for days to keep the meat juicy, tender and moist. The variations ordered were three tacos plate with birria, onions cilantro and a consome that was massive. This meal was $17. The other order was a four piece birria quesadilla that was absolutely delightful, succulent and had a delicious hunger craving aroma and flavor that any starving or hungry person would die for! This plate was $14. The tacos did come with beans and rice. Between the two dishes the birria quesadilla was my favorite however, the tacos tasted better. The tortilla of the tacos was fresh and made with love. The value was regular, something I expected compared to taco trucks and side vendors of Mexican food. This place is extraordinary. I felt guilty after consumption because it was fatty, juicy and everything you would want in a pleasurable meal, but it was heavy on the calories and filling. It was a messy meal, I added salsas, more seasoning from the condiments bar. There were so many different sauces and fillings like lemon etc. to balance the flavors of the birria. The console incuded was an added kick that I loved. Definitely one of the best if not the best birria I ever had and I highly recommend this place if you like Mexican cuisine at its finest. An absolute hidden treasure that you need to try! I'll come back after a month of consistent cardio and strength training to burn enough fat and make room for another appetite that soothes my brain cells.
