Mardi Gras cocktail - King cake martini
    Peter M.

So, on my first night in New Orleans and after having a disappointing dinner experience (already posted), I was seeking retribution. After dinner, I debated on a Jazz bar, but each one I walked into was packed. But behold, the JW Marriott was just there and I decided to try its 55 Fahrenheit lobby bar for some revenge food. Walking in, this place though crowded, had scattered available seating space and a menu that seemed okay to my late evening taste. Beggars cannot be choosers. The bar wall was adjourned with stories of Spirit bottles that were optimally placed to capture lighting, color and magnetize the audience. The place was loud, full of well healed people that were staying here and willing to pay the big bucks for high end accommodation, dining and entertainment. It was clear that the town was gearing up for Mardi Gras in early March and this lobby bar had already dedicated some unique cocktails for this event. For food, I chose the rice and beans, to soothe my wounds. It consisted of Camellia red beans, smoked sausage, rice and cornbread. While the flavor in the sauce that held the beans was thick and satisfying, they were cooked to death and were falling apart. The two whole sausages were tough and dry. The accompanying rice was the big surprise. It was inconsistently cooked with numerous grains uncooked or bone dry, thus contributing further to the demise of the dish. On a positive side, service at this lobby watering hole, was slow, but cordial and superb.

I enjoyed the Po'boy for lunch and the fries. The best Po'boy I've had in the city was at Parkway Tavern but this would was great. The fries were good but not served hot and they were not as crispy as I would've liked. The turnaround the food was great while we waiting for our room upgrade to be completed. Our waitress/server was very kind and accommodating.

I had a very nice dinner with my boss. We shared a Crabcakes appetizer that came with 2 generous pieces of crabcakes that were moist and delicious. For the entree, I ordered the Seared Gulf Catch and he ordered the Crispy Roasted Half Chicken. I had a taste of the crispy chicken and was very surprised that for the extra crispy skin, the white meat was so juicy! Both dishes were excellent! My Hurricane cocktail was delish as well! The service was good. The restaurant bar was a bit on the louder side since it was pretty much located in the lobby of the hotel where we stayed.

Located in the lobby of the Marriott, this eatery has good local food. The jambalaya was flavorful with great ingredients. The best part of this place is that they make fresh beignets that are actually better than Café du Monde; seriously.

Amazing gumbo accompanied by three tiny hot sauce bottles and a Bourbon on the Bayou

Impressed I could get such great food right here in a Marriott hotel. I knew it would be good when I saw people arriving who weren't even staying here. My server was friendly and attentive. I make sure to have lots of gumbo when I'm visiting NOLA and was surprised how great this tasted! Fresh everything- I will be getting my gumbo fix here, for sure! Enjoyed the Bourbon on the Bayou cocktail so much - drinks here are as strong as they should be & not watered down- definitely great quality for the price.

Restaurant is located inside the Marriott Hotel on Canal St. This place also has a bar. Food tastes like typical bar food.

OMGosh!! 1/2 price charbroiled oysters that were AMAZING! 1/2 priced house wine that was decent. Incredible fried green tomatoes- fabulous service - yummy bar snacks and the bartender put the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals on -Go Las Vegas Nights!! This bar just made a business trip memorable!!! I'll be here for a well and I plan to be back! Thank you!!!!!

We were staying in the hotel and stopped here for a few drinks and an appetizer. The second night we did this, the bartender we had, I believe his name was Dave, made the experience great. He improvised two drinks for me, one I ordered, and one I did not. For both he didn't have all the ingredients so he did the best he could. And I really enjoyed it. We also had a great fried green tomato appetizer, topped with goat cheese. It's definitely a winner if you like fried green tomatoes!

This plane is wonderful. Happy hour everyday from 5 to 7. Great service and strong hurricanes.

Happy hour special! I thought it was pretty good for the little money that we paid.

This place is great for being inside a hotel lobby. I took advantage of their happy hour twice. It was great and cheap! I would recommended their charbroiled oysters!

Loving this places happy hour. Last night was $4 red fish tacos and margaritas. Tonight was half priced grilled oysters and house wines. $8/dozen. Can't wait to check out tonight's happy hour!

Rich, layered, and well-balanced with fresh elements that worked together on the plate. For entrées, we had a variety of cuts, including the Australian Wagyu, ribeye, butcher's cut, and lamb chops. The Wagyu stood out immediately. High quality, great sear, and finished tableside, which added to the overall experience without taking away from the food itself. Each steak was cooked precisely to temperature and full of flavor. The lamb chops paired with carrots and brussels were well executed and balanced. The sides complemented the meal well and did not feel like afterthoughts. You can also see their in-house dry aging setup, which speaks to the level of detail they put into their steak program. It shows in the final product. The drinks were solid across the board. The Old Fashioned and bourbon selections paired well with the meal and matched the food's quality. Service by Noelle was attentive and responsive throughout the night. Everything flowed well, and we were taken care of without feeling rushed or hovered over. This is not a casual dinner spot, but for a celebration or a night where you want a full experience, Doris Metropolitan absolutely delivers.

It started the moment we walked in. Glancing at the hostess, asking "OK to sit at the bar?", getting a nod, sitting down. An experience we've done in hundreds of restaurants. (We had reservations for a table but often prefer the bar.) The bartender -- whom we believe was named Mike -- started off his interaction with new customers as follows. "Did you check with the hostess?" I nodded in the affirmative, apparently that wasn't enough. "Check with the hostess", he ordered. I got up, went over the hostess stand, and confirmed, this time so "Mike" could see, that it was OK for us to sit at a half-empty bar. (In retrospect, we should have gotten up and walked out immediately, but it was late and even in the Quarter most places were closing for dinner.) You see, Mike clearly didn't want to be working that night. He was rude, inattentive, and condescending. And not just to us, to everyone seated at the bar. Slow making drinks, slow asking for orders, seething contempt for his customers. One time we asked to see a drink menu to decide on a new drink, he said, and this is a direct quote, "Do you want to see it or do you want to review it?" Mike's behavior was clearly well-known to the staff, because another staff member, who was off-shift and next to us at the bar, witnessed this behavior and arranged for a free dessert on the house (classy move on her part). She confided in us that Mike's pretty much always like that, but that he's a buddy of the general manager so seemingly un-fireable. Well, here's hoping someone reads this and thinks the better of Doris Metropolitan, or at least sitting at the bar. Unless you think service you'd get in a Paris tourist trap cafe is appropriate for a high-end steakhouse, you're better off spending your hard-earned money elsewhere.

Though pop-up showers were still lingering, my husband and I decided to take a gamble on courtyard dining--and I am so glad we did! Sheltered under the green umbrellas surrounded by historic brick walls, lush greenery, and rain-kissed citrus trees, the atmosphere was incredibly romantic and peaceful. The courtyard's intimate layout even brought a bit of extra magic to our evening. We sat near another wonderful couple (and their adorable daughter) and became fast friends, sharing laughs and conversation throughout the night. What truly anchored the experience, though, was the incredible service. The staff was remarkably personable, helpful, and welcoming. The dinner itself was excellent from start to finish, showcasing immense culinary skill across every dish. We started with the delicious brussels sprouts and a uniquely seasoned spring/summer gumbo that was unlike any version we've had before (oh, what I would give for the recipe). As for the entrées, the shrimp and grits were phenomenal, and the blackened catfish sandwich with a fresh salad was executed flawlessly...and the bread pudding was fantastic, too! It is rare to find an experience where top-tier hospitality, a breathtaking environment, and great food come together so (seemingly) effortlessly. Café Amélie is an absolute must-visit! The host was extremely welcoming and friendly. Our server and helpers were over quickly to drop off waters and greet us. I ended up ordered the salmon. With it being so early and only one or 2 other tables besides my friend and me, the food did take longer to come out than I expected it to. Both of us did thoroughly enjoy what we got. The salmon was crispy on the outside with a nice sauce over it. We thought we'd have time to get dessert so we ordered a couple but that too took a very long time. We finally waved down our server to cancel and get the check since we had to be somewhere and he apologized and said their WiFi was going in and out so it could be that it was registering on the kitchen side. That may have explained why our entrees took too long. If it wasn't for the service and the food being great - I would not be thrilled about timing. We got there around 5:30p and had to leave by 7:15p so an almost 2 hours experience that probably could have been 1 hour.

My wife and I visited on our first NoLa trip together about 4 years ago and make it a point to go every time now. Our first time we stopped in for lunch at the bar and had an excellent experience, and decided to return. We came back on the next trip just to grab a drink and a snack before heading down for dinner in the Bywater. The bartender (Chris) gave a bunch of recommendations for places to visit that way, all of which we have done in the past few trips and have loved. But it's this past trip where we were truly blown away. We were in town for JazzFest and after walking back to the French Quarter, we were thinking about food options and decided to take a gamble to see if we could get a seat at the bar or maybe grab a drink for the road before getting food somewhere else. The bar was full when we got there around 8/8:15, but they had a no show and could serve us, as long as we ordered quickly and were ok with the check hitting the table right at 9PM. Given our slightly (perhaps generous) inebriated state from being at the festival all day and being slightly underdressed, we felt this was quite a kind accommodation. With the clear expectations of needing to get our orders in quickly, we wasted no time making a decision on our drinks and a few food options. Despite this need for a quick turn around, at no time did we feel rushed. The food and drinks were absolutely perfect, as they always are. But what impressed us most was the staff. At no point did the hostess or wait staff seem annoyed by us, despite us parachuting in from a music festival and looking like sunburn and poor decisions. By managing expectations on the front end, we never felt rushed despite the need for a quick turn around. They were all lovely, professional, and as cordial as if we were regulars with standing reservations once a week. In terms of atmosphere, it is always perfect: lively and fun for a date night, dinner with friends/family, or just a nice drink before a night out and about. I truly cannot begin to explain how much I love this restaurant and every experience I've had there. The awards and accolades this establishment (a sincere and lofty term Jewel of the South truly deserves) have been awarded are beyond well earned. Restaurants around the country should aspire to provide the quality of food, service, and overall hospitality Jewel of the South provides on a regular basis. It will continue to be our first and foremost recommendation to anyone we know who is going to New Orleans. Bravo! We shall return!

The tables are spaced well apart for noise and a possible romantic dinner/Breakfast. :-) Once seated, the server was working very hard but found us.
