Been awhile since we came here. Still loving it just as much as ever though. We ordered a lot of dishes. They were all ordered in Chinese, and I didn't get to see a receipt so I'm not sure exactly what all the dishes were called. They brought out some kind of soup to begin with but I didn't eat it as I don't eat meat. Looked like something I'd have enjoyed if I were still a meat eater though. It was a light broth with corn on the cob and carrots in it, in addition to the meat. There was some kind of tofu dish on the table with broccoli and mushrooms in it. I really enjoyed that dish. There was also an Eggplant with sole hotpot dish. I enjoyed this too as I'm a huge fan of eggplant but I could have done without the sole part and more eggplant in it. Just my personal preference as I'm really more into the eggplant part of it. Had to have a Shrimp and scrambled egg rice noodle dish again. It's our daughter's favorite dish. There was deep fried squid & prawn dish on the table, as well as a deep fried halibut dish. Wasn't too crazy about the halibut as there were a lot of bones in it. The squid & prawn was good though. There were some green beans with minced meat in them, some hainanese style chicken and some other kind of hotpot dish that had meat in it. The complimentary dessert soup was pumpkin tapioca soup this time. Always happy to have anything other than red bean soup. Tapioca is one of my favorite alternatives and I loved that this one had pumpkin in it. That's a slightly different twist on it. This is a HK style cafe within the mini mall. came here on a Sunday lunch time, shortly after opening at 11. Pros: plenty of free parking in the mall. service was very fast (almost too fast, kinda rushed, esp when theres only 2 tables eating) place was relatively clean, spacious, comfortable. They take credit card, no extra charges Cons: the food. we ordered 2 "mini sets." Plate of food that comes with a hot tea/coffee, upcharge for cold and other select drinks. pretty typical. Oddly ovaltine was not an option unlike most other similar places. We got the beef tongue on rice with tomato sauce, and portugese style chicken leg with fried rice. For drinks, we got the HK style milk tea/coffee mix, iced. All pretty standard HK cafe type fare. The beef tongue was tender. The tomato sauce was very generic. And they added frozen veg mix (peas, niblet corn, chopped carrots). very mediocre. The portugese chicken was a single chicken thigh only, whole served on egg fried rice with curry sauce. No shaved coconut like it is supposed to have, but they added more of the frozen veg mix. The milk tea/coffee drink had a weird sour aftertaste, and not very flavorful for either tea or coffee. Portion size was fine, and each combo was $15. Overall, the food is a 2.5/5, service and value are 3.5/5. If you live around this area and want some HK cafe food, this is basically it and it suffices. Theres really nothing else similar around it. But if you're willing to drive a bit, theres many better options in town. read more

We ordered 3 dish combo which comes with soup, rice, and dessert. The soup was great - very flavorful. Paired appetizer dish - we chose jellyfish and bbq pork. Keep in mind, this dish is literally just bought from other stores and not made in house. The bbq pork was tough and flavorless. The jellyfish was the worst thing we have eaten. It was mushy and chopped up into little pieces. The good thing was that the waitress offered to switch it out. So we got bbq duck instead. The duck was also bad. Thin skin, flavorless meat. I don't know where they are getting their stuff from. Sweet and sour pork - half of the dish is onions/bell peppers which should have been the accent. The sauce itself is not bad. The pork was okay. Mostly very lean pork so it was tougher than usual. First time seeing pineapple tidbits used instead of chunks or quartered slices. This makes the dish look really cheap since you can just pour the can into the wok. Deep fried squid and tofu - very obvious there is more tofu than squid to save money. The tofu was fried well. The squid was over fried and rather hard/chewy and dry. The seasoned salt and chili pepper seasoning was good. Considering these are very staple dishes and they cannot even do them mediocrely, I would not try their seafood dishes. Dessert was sago.. something with taro. This dessert is supposed to be made with coconut milk dish but I had no idea what they used. It was so sweet so I suspect it was just diluted condensed milk. read more

I ordered takeout from here since I was doing some grocery shopping at The Independent in the same plaza. tldr; the food was good (though a bit pricey), but they didn't give me everything that was listed on the menu for the combo I came on a Thursday afternoon around 5 pm and the restaurant was pretty empty with just a handful of patrons. The inside looked pretty nice (maybe it was recently remodeled?) with plenty of lighting. I was a bit overwhelmed with all the options on the menu, but ultimately decided to go with deep fried wings and a 1 dish combo with minced pork and egg tofu (#59). According to the menu, the combo should come with steamed rice, daily soup, and a dessert. I even clarified this with the woman taking my order and she confirmed. However, when I got home, I realized there was no soup or dessert included, only rice... I was quite annoyed that I didn't get what was promised on the menu. The food itself was actually pretty good. The food here was not good at all, flavouring was way off on the soup and the curry I other tasted bitter and the other dish I other was so flavourless. The service was decent atleast. No frills Chinese restaurant. Decent for sure, but nothing special. Parking is available in the strip mall lot. Plenty of spots. Staff were friendly and helpful. The interior is modern and clean, but very plain. Too plain. Almost feels like someone's brand new house before they move in. As others have mentioned, the pricing here is very reasonable. Food actually tasted pretty decent, especially the peking duck. The food was pretty tasty. It's just like every other Chinese place out there. I had their soup, sweet and sour pork chops, lettuce wraps, and deep fried cod in cream sauce. As mentioned above, it's decent but nothing special. 魚蛋河 Review: Downright disgusting. I want to bow and apologize to every customer that came to this restaurant and tell them Chinese food doesn't actually taste like this. Please don't come here. They have wronged the 魚蛋河. The soup was bland and really oily. The 河粉 was really thick so there was pretty much no flavour at all. The 魚蛋 literally was so salty and full of MSG I could feel my body getting high blood pressure and hypertension. Hong Kong's $36HK 魚蛋河 is literally 10x better. The waitress was so rude too like wth. Food is always "spot on"! Prices are a bit higher but quality & quantity are there! My sort of place. Our elderly mom loves loves loves their chicken clay pot rice so much that we must have two orders so she can bring 3/4 of the orders home. Plus her "must have" order of the stirfried beef with noodles too. Great takeout special is offered too. Have a choice of five different dishes. The first dish is a certain price and second dish would be cheaper. I usually an order almost 3-4x a month. Highly recommend to give this place a try. Extensive menu too. never been to this place before. my dad stumbled upon it by accident while reading the newspaper. according to him, they have great set menus that include a whole lobster. given that it was my moms birthday, we decided, lets go give it a try!! the promo was a lobster and 3 dishes i believe was around $80. no rice or soup included. we just ended up ordering a couple more extras to complement a party of 10. first up, the lobster. cooked in the classic lobster gravy with ginger and onion. pieces were chopped up well so all you needed was a fork. tasted very fresh and juicy. it was big enough for everyone to have a couple or more pieces. great value. next we had the sweet and sour fish. one of the best out there for sure. the fish was deep fried first and then the sauce mixed upon serving. so no soggy texture and overpowering of the sauce. execution was spot on. taste was awesome. you can taste the actual fish and not the minced variety. next was the 1/2 hainanese chicken. hmm...chicken looked small. taste was nowhere near real hainanese chicken. it was closer to steamed white empress chicken. lol. no lemongrass aroma and ginger taste was weak. next was beef tenderloin with chinese steak sauce. a long-time family fav of ours. this dish was top notch here. the beef was very tender and juicy. portions were huge too. sauce was tangy and aromatic. not too sweet or sour..just right!! beautiful dish! next was the shrimp in pot with vermicelli! i loved this dish too. served pipping hot and warms the soul. shrimps were not overcooked, and the noodles al dente. sauce was great. just right touch. did not drown the dish. next dish was the steam scallops with vegs. my last fav dish. little servings of scallops. lots of other vegs mixed in, including shredded chicken meat from the drumstick part it was so out of place and did not taste fresh. it was a bit oily too and not seasoned well. bland in taste and the sauce was weak and watery. will never order this again. :( last is the singing chicken with green onion in pot. another classic dish. tasted really good. chicken was chopped into bite sized pieces. sauces was right. served hot and fresh! very aromatic with the slices of sauteed ginger mixed in. service here sucks. servers not paying attention and hard to call them. i had to grab extra plates, chili, tea, and water by myself most times. free red bean soup for dessert in the end! when im in the area maybe i'll try their hk cafe entrees next. cheers! happy eating! read more

Renovation alert! New restaurant alert? I can't tell if it's the makeover, or if they have had a change in kitchen staff. I've been twice since they've completed their renovations, just after Christmas. To start, the place is no longer as grimy as it once looked (and felt). It's now very bright and has several new TV screens hanging on most of the walls. The seats are new, comfortable, and my goodness - clean! The food both times have been really very good. Having been around my fair share of chinese cafes in Vancouver. I'd really say the quality both times were above average! I went with my mother the first time (who swears only HK has good food), and even she said it had enough 'wok hay' and was good in flavour. Lastly, I'm not sure what the bad service reviews were about. Both times, the two ladies were quite nice. I'd definitely come back here again! * Average level HK style cafe * There are a lot of HK style cafe options in the Vancouver area. But there is always room to try a new one. I took my standard test dish of baked seafood rice to see what they were made of. It came on a lunch special which included soup and a choice of coffee or tea drinks. The vegetable cabbage soup had nice chunks of freshly cut veggies and a surprising twist of lemon peel (like the kind you get in lemon tea) to add acidity. It oddly worked well. It was a bit soggier than usual, and I missed that added flavour of good wok hei. The sauce was also a bit blander than I normally prefer. Overall the seafood was good in this dish, but the rest was below par. Very deceiving Ads in Ming Pao. Although their Lobster dinner was advertised as $99.99 with your choice of 3 other dishes picked from a list, the waitress told us that because of Lobster prices, there is a $15 surcharge. There are also additional surcharges on some dishes on their list, but since it is listed on the menu with the surcharges, I don't mind. The service is uncaring, and the food average. Our bill for three came to somewhere close to $170 with tips. I suggested to the owner that 54th Ave Cafe Restaurant that she should not be advertising their prices at $99.99 as I was leaving, yet in next week's Ming Pao Newspaper, the advertisement was there again. If they are going to keep making a $15 surcharge, they should advertise it as a $115 dinner. And that $15 surcharge should be printed on their menu where they show $99.99. The owner explained in a long song and dance way that costs of buying food was very high, and if I tried to buy the same ingredients to make a similar dinner, it will come out as high. That is of course NOT TRUE. I and my guests were very disappointed in 54th Ave. Cafe Restaurant's underhanded way a squeezing more money at every turn. We shall NOT be returning to 54th Ave Cafe Restaurant. Incidentally, we tried at Van. Tea Cafe on 41st and Main. They had the same advertised special of $99.99 Lobster with choice of three dishes. Van. Tea Cafe's food was much better, and the portions were larger. Their service was more attentive. They don't have surcharges on their advertised specials and no additional costs on any of the dishes which you make your choices from. The family and I finally tried this place due to time shortage and location convenience. I was surprised that at prime dinner time .. the place was empty ... I should have taken that fact as an omen ... The food was literally flavourless. We ordered 3 bowls of soup with three distinctly different soup bases and a seafood fried noodle dish. After a round of golf at Fraserview golf course we hungry men were looking for some food to fill our bellies! We ended up at 54th Ave Cafe Restaurant. I've been here a few times. The only time I come here is after a round of golf at Fraserview. I guess I would classify this place as one of these duel location places... You go to one place which leads you to go to another place... Go golfing at Fraserview go for lunch at 54th Ave... Well the food is ok here. Certainly within the average band. It's not an outlier on the bad or the good spectrum... Just somewhere down the middle of the fairway... Service is so so.... Great Mongolian beef dish- kitchen staff makes fantastic food. Service is horrible, they don't ask if you need a drink, and are pretty much rude from beginning to end. You cannot bring your own drink which costs (20c water wholesale price) so they prefer losing 50$ dollars for a meal. They would make more money off me if they kept me returning. As I keep reviewing places in Vancouver, I notice a certain trend in my lunch habits. Being a CBC, I find myself awfully attracted to HK style cafes or cha chan tengs. As I keep going to these cafe's I find myself ordering roughly the same things each time and I've done it enough to consider myself quite an expert of several dishes and drinks. These include buttered pineapple buns, mix grilled steaks of (beef, chicken, pork, and occasionally fish cutlet), Singapore fried noodles, hk mixed coffee/tea, and Iced lemon tea. It's been a while since I've been a while since I've been here, but after I sat down I noticed the prices on the menu seemed to have increased a bit. That did not come as a surprise, but around this area, paying over $10 for common dishes felt expensive. The service that day consisted of two waitresses. One of them was happy to serve us and would come immediately once we waved at her, the other however, kept ignoring us. Even as she walked right passed our table, I asked for the menu again, she refused to acknowledge my request immediately and didn't return until a couple minutes later. This happened two more times when I asked for a pair of chop sticks and lastly the bill. That definitely put a damper to their service. I ordered a mix grill of steaks with onion sauce. The food there was decent and the portions were pretty good. There wasn't a choice of soup like most other places when ordering combo lunches like this, but it's not too big of a complaint. The lemon ice tea I ordered could have been sweeter, and the hk coffee milk tea I ordered to go was too sweet. Although there aren't many hk style cafes around South Burnaby, I don't think I'll miss this place too much. It's going to be a while till I come back to this cafe again. read more

I would give this place zero stars if I could. Tried this place for the first time because of convenience. I just happened to pass through the neighborhood. Waited 30+ minutes for my braised beef tendon yee mein. No apologies from the staff of course, being a Chinese place and all. The wait was not worth it. The noodles were fine, but some tendons were tough and some were soft. And hard or soft, they had a strange soapy taste to it. The HK style tea I ordered with the meal was tasted weak. Not the best cup of nai-cha I've ever had. Horrible experience all around. Definitely won't be going back. There are way better HK style cafes. read more

My husband and I were unsure of this place because of the mixed reviews, but we decided to try it anyway. We really liked the food! The service was great- friendly & accommodating. I asked for a baked vegetable spaghetti in cream sauce and they did an awesome job. There aren't very many veggie options on the menu, but they seemed happy to make this for me and it turned out very good (uploaded a photo too). Only complain is the spring rolls were a bit greasy, but other than that everything was good. We'll be back some time to try out the hk style breakfast. Yumm! read more

When you're in this area and needing something to eat, be it lunch, dinner or later at night and you don't want A&W. I've had the occasion to eat here, um say about 15 times at least. I have friends in the area and well, at one time this was an area we called home. What do I get that I like here? Singapore vermicelli and or the rice noodle dish with silky egg. I can't remember the name but there are pics posted here. Fried rice you can't do wrong either. It's the basics that are ok. Staff seems nice, never had a problem dining in or take out. Mostly take out lately these days. So when I'm around and need my carb fix, yeah, I'll order something up to take back to Richmond (yes all the way back there...) to eat. The service is slow, slow, slow if you dine in. If you order takeout, double the amount of time they say it'll take for your food to be ready, because otherwise you'll find yourself waiting around for a good 30 minutes or so. Despite the annoyances with the quality of service, the staff are always friendly. We find ourselves here fairly often whenever in Vancouver due to the restaurant's proximity to family. Went there few days ago and it was my first time there. Food was flavorful, very good portions, and staff were friendly. Speaking of emptiness, we went in around 7or 8pm, can't remember, but discount dinner mini combos start later in the evening (9pm??). Most of the time people wait til discount time to come in, and I assume that's why it's so empty during the usual dinner hours. Staff was attentive as well. I really like their (free) dessert as well. It was the tapioca dessert with coconut milk. My family likes the place and definitely will come again. I'm not sure why the place gets such bad reviews. We ordered a baked pork chop on rice and a baked seafood on rice. Both were covered in onions and the sauce on the pork chop was an ugly brown instead of a nice vibrant red. The seafood ingredients didn't seem that fresh either. It was more like a stew than a sauce and even though it was baked, we didn't get that nice layer of crust you would typically find. I've never been so frustrated eating meal before, specifically because the sheer laziness and lack of effort in putting together a meal. We eat a lot at these HK cafe type places, and this one is definitely at the bottom of the list. We actually came by once a few months back, didn't like it then, but decided to give it another chance since we were in the area. Food leaves a lot to be desired. Everything is terribly salty! And service is slow, slow, slooooooow. My dish came long after my friend had finished eating, so we had the pleasant experience of staring at each other eat. I did not even order one of those baked/pot dishes that would take long to cook, just good ol' regular stir fried spinach. The place smelt really really bad and I tried to ignore it, however, after a while I just had to leave 'cause I was getting a headache from the smell of what seemed like a dead animal. Standard HK cafe with food that leaves a lot to be desired. I've been here a few times strictly out of convenience (I am in the area and couldn't be bothered to drive out any further). While good value like most other HK cafes - the food here has always been bland. Unlike the reviewer below, I was not impressed with their baked pork chop on rice (perhaps a different chef?). I still think this place had changed their chef. Going from a quiet dead restaurant to a super busy restaurant really says something about this place. Usually I will be ordering the tasty baked pork chop rice or baked seafood rice, but this time Ive decided to switch it up by ordering curry beef brisket. The dish came up perfect with a generous portion of tender beef and potatoes topped with their curry sauce and a side plate of rice. All three of these dishes satisfied my hunger. Who knows what other dishes of theirs are just as good so I will be returning back to this HK cafe. read more

My first time at the 54th and this is another one of those good cheap Hong Kong style cafe, last Sunday me and boys went for lunch and the place was full. We had to wait for around 10 minutes for a table. I ordered the classic bake pork chop on rice, it took a little longer but it was worth it. The rice dish topped with a generous portion of pork chop and tomatoes and onion, blended with a kind of tomato sauce and cheese. The whole thing was bake and the cheese just melted on top of everything. Of course the dish came with a drink of your choice just like a good old Hong Kong style cafe, all around for $9.
