I've been wanting to try 5000 Pies for years, and after finally trying them recently, it's safe to say they completely lived up to my expectations! Aside from serving up a mean deep-dish pizza, I love how community-oriented this establishment is as it's operated by a local church. They employ students from Cabrillo High School which helps provide jobs within the surrounding community. I haven't been inside the restaurant since my boyfriend has picked up our order each time we've visited, so I can't comment on the interior. They're located directly across the street from Cabrillo High School. The service has always been friendly whenever I call to place a phone order. By the way, if you opt for the deep-dish pizza they'll let you know it takes around 45 minutes to prepare. Besides deep dish, they also offer a traditional crust pizza along with a variety of desserts. The deep-dish pizza itself is amazing! Each pie comes with eight hefty slices of pure marinara and cheesy goodness. They definitely don't skimp on the toppings either. I highly recommend their Spicy Deep Dish, which is more flavorful than spicy in my opinion. Overall, I recommend this spot to anyone in the area looking for a really good deep-dish pizza or simply wanting to try something new. 5000 Pies (specializing in Chicago-style deep dish pizza) has been on my radar for a while. Finally had a chance to get pick-up on a Friday afternoon, in preparation for watching the NBA finals. This is a restaurant with a cause that's been open for more than 11 years now, and still going strong. The restaurant is owned and operated by a West Long Beach church (restaurant name comes from the New Testament: feeding of the 5,000 Miracle). The church sponsors a youth culinary program here, and employs students from the nearby high school (Cabrillo). Hours continue to be limited, only open from 14:30 - 18:30, Wed - Fri (closed Sa - Tue). Previously, required to make a phone call to pre-order (necessary since a deep dish can take up to an hour to bake). But noticed that on their homepage, they encourage ordering on-line via a delivery service, so used Door Dash (using $5 monthly credit from CSR credit card), and it accurately reflected the menu. Took the next available slot which happened to be 50 minutes from order taking. Got a large deep dish with with 3 toppings ($31): sausage, pineapple, and ham. Later learned that DD charges restaurants a flat 6% fee, even for customer pickup, so probably will order from here directly next time. The restaurant does use a modern POS system (looked like Clover?), but one would need to call to place the order (which I've not done with any restaurant in a long time). Got there a bit early. This place is take-out only (no place to sit down and eat), but there a few stools to sit down while waiting. The order ended up taking 20 minutes longer than the promised time, which wasn't great. While waiting, noticed a lot of customers were high school aged students coming in for snacks (a very popular dish seemed to be chicken jaguar [nickname of the high school] fries). Employees are young adults, and the cashier/order taker was friendly. Kept the pizza warm in the oven until game-time. It was well made. Tons of value here...eating one slice (out of 8) will do a good job of filling one up. The crust wasn't so buttery, which for me was a good thing, and was dry enough not to get too soggy. The toppings were OK, wasn't a ton of toppings as some pizza places do, thus would recommend double toppings if you like one in particular. Used plenty of cornmeal at the bottom of the crust. And there was a decent amount of cheese. Really liked the taste of the plentiful sauce on top as well. Growing up in Chicagoland, I've had my share of deep dish pizza and definitely fall in the camp of Chicago tavern style pizza being better, but sometimes you get a hankering. There are some good deep dish here in LA land though, with Masa being the best (this isn't as good as that). But 5000 is a heck of a lot closer, and can compete at the same level as the other well known deep dish pizza purveyor in LB (Rance's). read more

I accidentally ordered a normal pizza through DoorDash and didn't realize this until I picked up my pizza. Decided to order the loaded deep dish and sit around for another 1 hr. They're both not bad. Nothing amazing, but not bad. Was some work to finally get the pizza considering their odd hours. While I was sitting there waiting for my deep dish, 2 kids walked by and asked me for some slices. I gave them a slice each which they were amazed that I did and then asked me for a 2nd slice! I told them to hit the road. :) read more

Chicago style deep dish pizza! What makes this one different than others I've tried is that here the sauce is a bit sweet, there's less cheese, and the crust isn't too thick, although it's nice and deep. All of those factors are appreciated! I got the Loaded combination and it was perfect. The pizza takes a solid hour from the time you hang up your phone after placing the order. And that's expected because this is a thick pizza that needs time to cook. It is a takeout only operation. However there are 2 bar stools and a narrow counter if you're desperate. They are only open on limited days and limited hours. Be sure to check their website as they keep it up to date regarding their latest hours of operation. Really disappointed in the deep dishes we ordered. Filled to the brim with cheese!!! We didnt order deep dish cheese pizzas!!!! Where the heck were the other ingredients?! The Hawaiian barely had pineapple. The other deep dish had a very little, almost non existent, layer of spinach, and just a sprinkle of bacon. I stopped by after not being here in a few years. Used to frequent a lot in high school as it was right in front of the school. Was so excited to try the fresh hot fries with jag sauce. Well they brought out our food and handed it to us. We walked out and tried it, the fries were older and tasted stale. Barely any heat to them. Called in on my way home for a personal pepperoni deep dish and was stoked to hear they offer vegan cheese--a game-changer for someone who's lactose intolerant! My pie was ready in about 35 minutes, and it did not disappoint. Easily one of the best deep dishes I've had in LA. I'll always miss regular cheese, but their vegan option was awesome--gooey, flavorful, and paired perfectly with their rich sauce. Blown away on my first trip here. The pizza was incredible and unique. The Chicago deep dish style is constructed like a standard Chicago style, but, with some unique flair. First the crust is a little less flakey and has some seasoning to it; I think this is significantly better than most Chicago style pizza crust in the area. The sauce was a bit less sweet and chunky than standard Chicago style; again I thought this improved the pizza. The large deep dish was big and could easily feed 4 with a slice left over. The Spicy had incredibly delicious flavor; spicy without being overwhelming with good chucks of pepper and delicious sausage inside. This pie was perfection. I don't know if I'll be able to order a different pie next time I come in since I loved it so much. The chocolate peanut butter toffee cookies were incredible, but, the snickerdoodle were also very good. Only downer with this place are the hours. I would say this is an interesting pizza experience. For me, it was not the illuminating experience I expected, but maybe I read a little too much into the other reviews. I'd order 5000 pies from 5000 Pies! Stopped by this storefront kitchen on the way back from the Aquarium. It takes about 40 min to make a deep dish pizza and they are very small storefront, but there is a lovely park just across the street where you can wait in comfort, and picnic when the pizza is ready. The fresh spinach deep dish was like a lasagna pie, a full cheesy meal in each slice. The chicken jaguar fries with honey chipotle were flavorful and sweet- absolutely devoured them! Really awesome place with great deep dish. I would say I'm shocked since other than Rance's, I wasn't aware of another deep dish pizza place! The price is good. I still prefer Masa in echo park but this place hits the spot, and due to the price and flavor, I would come back I wouldn't recommend the regular pizza; it was soggy in the middle.... You can check in for a free cookie. I liked the texture of the oatmeal one, but the flavor of the chocolate one. But otherwise nothing to write home about. I would suggest being able to order online. We called about 10000x before the line wasn't busy and we could put in our pizza order. Which then took about an hour after that. I had the deep dish spinach pizza and it was exceptional. Be sure to order at at least 30 minutes before as some pizzas can take up to an hour to make. The location seems to be less of a modern pizzaria but more of a small business. It seems like quite a few students are employees and I look forward to having to their other options. I never knew this place existed until my friend drove me over to grab some PIES. The pizzas are yummy here. Grab yourself a $5 personal pizza which includes two toppings. Add more toppings for $.75 each. The pizza was hot, delicious and yummy. They make it when you order so no heat lamps or premade pizzas. Also try their dessert pies and cookies. I didn't get a chance to try their dessert pies but they gave us free cookies as 1st timers. You can also check into Yelp for a free cookie. The area isn't great but the pizza is good and cheap. Find street parking. LBPD station right across the street for you if you need. Take out, credit cards okay. Our To go order wasn't quite ready when I got there so I ordered another personal pizza $5 with sausage and pineapple and 3 cookies for $1.25 One peanut butter, one triple chocolate, and one oatmeal raisin while I waited. Cookies are great, very moist and soft with just the right amount of crunch when buy in to. My favorite was the OATMEAL RAISIN which has a thin layer of icing on top of each cookie. TRIPLE CHOCOLATE is good too not too sweet and definitely packed with chocolate chips. PEANUT BUTTER is good the peanut butter is not too over powering and you can still taste everything else that's included in the cookie. I'll be back to try more dessert. The staff is really helpful and nice but they seem a little disorganized because they forgot to give me my cookies order and then Later forgot to give me my personal pizza. All pizzas are made to order and the sauce is really good, so is the crust. Not too thin and not too thick with just the right amount of crunchy texture. Toppings are fresh and very flavorful. I didn't realize it was takeout only! We were on our way back from LAX to Oceanside, looking for a quick meal. This place has great reviews and I understand why but it's really take out only. We got a personal pizza (& a free cookie -oatmeal cranberry- it was GREAT) and headed south. The pizza only took 10 minutes and it was tasty. It had a very soft crust and just the right amount of chew. The pictures of the deep dish look amazing but that would have taken 40-50 minutes. I definitely do not recommend this place - Yelp steered us so wrong. I do not understand the reviews- is it due to the high school students that come here from across the street? The place is small but the aesthetics are simple and clean. The girl at the counter was nice but the guy who was making the pizzas (her father? the owner?) was completely and utterly inappropriate. We ordered a family meal which comes with a large loaded pizza (with half no cheese), wings, and cookies as well as two personal size pizzas: a spinach and sausage and chicken with peppers, and a couple of drinks. We ordered, paid, and waited. As we waited, we heard the guy complaining and about about the order: "who orders a no cheese pizza..." and going on and on about it angrily. When we placed the order, the girl made no mention or did not hesitate when we asked for no cheese on half - if 'custom' orders are not offered then say so but we did not get any indication from her that this is something they cannot or will not do. I say 'custom' lightly because it is not an unusual request where they are doing anything extra - if anything we are saving them ingredients and paying the same price. We ordered it half no cheese due to ALLERGIC reasons, not for fun. Everybody heard his ramblings. We thought that was the highlight but we were wrong, it got even better: when the pizza came out, he made it the whole pizza with cheese but with extra cheese on one side. See the photos! The pizza itself was below basic, they pile on the cheese is to mask their low quality ingredients. Little Caesars is better than this. Basic Mall pizza is better than this. I have driven by this place so many times and had no idea it was a Restuarant. Today all of our staff ordered, 4 of us deep dish personal pizzas one salad and one sandwich and all of us were extremely happy with our food. The staff was very nice, it was clean and I think its one of the best pizzas I have ever had. Mine (shown) was light sauce with sausage, onion and feta cheese. The cookies were out of this world especially the cranberry oatmeal, actually the chocolate peanut butter pretty darn good I love the story and what the place is about, try them out!
