March 29, 2026 - first time trying Sri Lankan cuisine and my friend order recommended dishes. The first was Chicken 65. Ckcien that came with topped with onions, garnish, and coated in spices. The breading was a bit crunchy and the interior was soft and tender. A good blend of opposites when you bite into it. The next dish was dolphin kuthu. It was an interesting blend of several different things. Chopped roti, egg, mixed vege and chicken. Similar to the chicken, it was a mix of soft roti as a result of the sauce and the firmer vegetables and chicken. My friend ordered a bit spicy for me, but overall, the dish was really well made. The final dish was a mutton lamprais. It was a rice dish wrapped in a banana leaf. Each section was packed with something different- eggplant, shrimp, garlic etc. If you're looking to try a huge variety of different Sri Lankan food, this is what you would get. Overall I really enjoyed the variety as you can get something different in every bite. Ended with the Watalappam dessert, which is a coconut custard pudding. It was soft, smooth, creamy and not too sweet. You can really taste the coconut in the pudding. read more

The stand-outs at this restaurant were the customer service (all the servers were very nice, friendly, and food came out fast) and presentation of the dishes. Even though the food tasted delicious, most things were too spicy for me - but that's how you know it's authentic. Portion sizes were big - we took home a lot of it as take-out as we had a lot left over (you really get value for your bucks). 1) Seafood Kottu Roti, topped with Jaffna-style omelette - There was a good amount of seafood in the dish, although I found it way too spicy (compared to a much milder kottu roti that I had previously). I liked that it was topped with an omelette. 2) Crab Pittu Combo (pittu served with crab curry, fried fish, Jaffna-style omelette (with onions, garlic, curry leaves, turmeric, green chillies), pol (coconut) sambol, coconut milk sodhi) - There were a lot of ingredients and dishes in this combo! The pittu itself was very mild and dense - a good carb accompaniment to everything else. The crab was hard to eat as they didn't pre-crack any of the shells, and they didn't give a cracker to crack them open. I liked the Jaffna-style omelette and fish that came with this combo, in addition to the grated coconut crumbles that were part of the pittu. In addition to Sri Lankan dishes, there were South Indian and Hakka dishes as well on the menu. They offer take-out and delivery (saw lots of delivery drivers waiting for orders). We might go back to try some of the other dishes that we didn't get to try this time around (thanks to the extensive menu and large portion sizes). read more

Ordered four paper doses but got a cockroach in our meal. Im all for protein but that's not the kind I want and will not be going back. Mutton sukkha was mediocre and was almost slimey. Bamboo mutton biryani took 45 mins to get to the table, everyone else already half through their main course. Timing could be alot better. Barely any mutton in biryani. read more

The food here is truly delightful, with flavours that stand out. I found the prices are slightly higher than I'd expect. But their delivery service is outstanding-- setting a high standard for other restaurants serving Dosas. I would love to see a broader variety of Dosas, perhaps options like a paneer dosa which Saravana Bhavan has. It would make this place unbeatable for me. The dine-in experience, however, could use a refresh. The decor feels a bit dated and lacks the inviting charm that would make me want to host friends or family here. That said, the staff more than make up for it. They're friendly, attentive, and always willing to help, making the experience memorable. Very mixed reviews on this place. Decor was cute, but everything else..hit or miss... so let's break it down: FOOD Karala Parotta- Best thing I tried. Super fluffy that we kept ordering another. I ate it with the gravy from random curries but when it's hot and fresh, it's even good on it's own. Plain Roti- I've had plain roti before.. this was more like a tortilla. Not sure why it was priced at $2.49 when it takes 2.5 seconds to inhale this small portion. But hey, the waitress did warn us it was whole wheat flour. Apparently this is the "dieter's choice" item. Veechu Roti- I'm a fan. Super stretchy and thin and gets the job done. Poori- A little on the oily side but oh well, would totally order again. Came with a masala curry that I enjoyed. Mutton Biryani- Could take it or leave it. Was a standard biryani. Mutton and chicken curries- Definitely hit or miss. Sometimes too salty, sometimes just right. At least they offered to replace one of the curries when we mentioned it was too salty, which was nice. Wattalapam- Amazing dessert! Perfect texture and a great way to finish off a meal WAIT STAFF Hmmm...this was a fun game all night. The waitress was super funny, that's for sure. But when there's one waitress for the entire dining room, and she keeps forgetting what we ordered...it gets a little frustrating. Between asking for the same drinks multiple times, and have them come after the third attempt, to having her offer to pack up curry while we were still waiting on one more parotta, lets just say a 2nd person for the front of the house is much needed. OVERALL Food was decent, location was good, and might come back, just maybe not in the near future. read more

Worst food ever!!!!, we ordered for our wedding reception couple of weeks back, provided special instruction for mixed racial wedding to make the food mild. food was so spicy to a point no one ate it and we just had to throw it out! charging $25 a plate you can see whole chilly seeds in the curry and there's just minced meat in all the non-veg curry we ordered. Our casual stroll into 5 Spices Restaurant for brunch turned out to be an absolute culinary delight. We ordered the traditional Sri- Lankan pan cakes known as 'Hoppers' and accompanying curries. This place is a nice addition to the Scarborough South Asian food scene though it reminded me quite strongly of Southern Aroma (though I wouldn't say it lives up to the quality of that establishment). Really nice, well-decorated space, though it doesn't scream fine-dining. Also, the booths have irritatingly small tables/uncomfortable seats, so you're probably better off with one of their proper tables. Service is great -- our waitress was incredibly sweet and gave my father a complimentary cheesecake as we were there celebrating his birthday. The food was excellent! Food was well-timed, with our appetizers coming out relatively quickly. Some of our party found the hot 'n sour soup a little too peppery, but I quite liked the extra kick. The Sri Lankan jumbo shrimp was also tasty. Our mains were fantastic all-around: we loved the rich Vanni fish curry, and it paired nicely with the veechu roti. The onion dosa was excellent and was accompanied by a delicious trio of chutneys. Chicken hakka noodles were also quite yummy, and not overly oily, which is always nice. Finally got to try this place and I can say I'm pretty impressed! This restaurant itself is new, they only opened 2 months ago. The place is really clean, which is a huge plus! The staff here are friendly and come check up on you often. When I went, they had the lunch buffet, which was $14.99. They separated the vegetarian, meat and dessert selections. They had a variety of choices to choose from, which was good. I had a few meat dishes and all of them were pretty good. My favourite was the meat fried rice, chilli chicken and mutton curry. For dessert, I had gulab jamun and some fruits. The gulab jamun tasted good, however the fruits were not ripe enough! All in all, I'll be back and most likely for dinner so I can try out different items from the menu. read more

I went here on a Friday night, actually just finished having dinner there ! I must say that I was lured here by the good comments, but to be fair I did not read the comments in detail. Now I see the good comments were for their lunch buffet. Anyways, One of the dishes I ordered was a chef special dish called Sri Lankan chicken curry. I even asked the server if the dish was good - she obviously replied positively. When the dish in question came out, literally the curry was just with chicken bones. There was no chicken meat in sight, it was just chicken bones curry. I did not complain in the beginning only because our server was busy serving other tables and also I thought of giving a second chance to the dish by digging more into the curry. By the end of my meal, I called the server and told her about the dish and showed her the chicken bones. She apologized and said she will do something about it. But when she returned With the bill she said that the owner said that this is how "Sri Lankan chicken curry" is supposed to be and that I should have told her earlier if I had problems with the dish. I am not an expert in Sri Lankan dishes, but the restaurant must at least be courteous to name their dish "Sri Lankan chicken bone curry with chicken wastes" (coz I also found a chicken neck piece in the curry) so as to not confuse customers like me. The dish left a bad taste in my mouth and they charged me 12 dollars for a curry full of chicken bones. It's not about the money for me, but I was shocked that the owners thought it was ok to charge their customers for a dish that consisted only of Chicken wastes. End of the story, they did not do anything to help the situation. No apologies from the management nor any explanation apart from the ridiculous one mentioned above. Just a blank stare from the host when I was leaving. Ps: Note to the owners - remove the sign next to the Sri Lankan chicken curry that says it's a chef signature dish. I am so sorry to say this I am not recomending this restaurant. I saw a instragram video and the food was looking so good but I came to try some of there dishes. Honeltly I was disappoined and ripped off. First I order a chicken 65 around $ 17 , it was less portuon for this price, then I orderd hot'n' sour soup it did not have real hot sour soup taste and it was vey small porton for around$10. My biggest regret is orderding the BAMBOO briyani for around $ 36 , believe this is such a ripp off the portion of the biriyani rice was not even half of the regular takeout for biriyani you buy outside and it is not anything that special in the BAMBOO biriyani even though their is Lobster with it I still don't reccomend this.Me and my Husband were dining and by the time we were leaving we were not full and not satisfied at all.I honestly had to go to Mcdonalds and get a hamburger. read more

After trying the buffet food I must say it's much better than the dishes you can order from. The buffet especially on Friday has a variety of vegetarian options. You can get as much rice and curries as you want and dosas as well. I love the sweets you get as well. read more

Went back again since I loved the Parrotas last time. They did not disappoint. The Sri Lankan Mutton Curry was also very flavourful and had a nice curry sauce which went well with the Parrota. An elderly man recommended 5 Spice, so we headed straight there. Upon entering, we were greeted by smiling faces and a bountiful and fresh buffet just before noon. Fresh dosas and naan were ordered separately and the buffet was a god send after a cold , difficult morning. I recommend the soups, lamb, and even the tapioca pudding. Came here for lunch today and despite telling ourselves that we weren't going to join the buffet, we were so hungry by the time we got here (it was almost 2), that we decided we were too hungry to order and then wait for food, and we went ahead to the buffet. I was here on a Sunday for a family lunch. The staff was very attentive the minute we walked in the door, despite the weekend lunch rush. It was clean and organized. The wait staff was incredible, which I find is hard to find in a buffet style setting. There was a good variety of food, and even thosai and appam made to order. The thosai comes from the back, you'll have to ask the waiter for it. I would definitely recommend it, if you can handle it! Then we ordered, biryani, mutton & chicken curries and parathas, we all enjoyed the food, bit spicy for my liking, that's just me. I really appreciate what this restaurant brings to the table (haha...see what I did there??) Its located in a fairly sketchy plaza but the restaurant itself is modern and good for families and large groups. The food is Sri Lankan Tamil, which is spicier than Indian Tamil cuisine. I've only been to the restaurant once for dinner but I've ordered several times on Uber eats. I have yet to try their extensive lunch buffet but I have enjoyed all the various biryanis. The fish curry is soooo good- rich and flavourful. The puttu is moist and with lots of coconut. There were a few fails - the vadai is underseasoned and I've had some major errors on my Uber eats order more than a couple times. That being said I love the food here in general and am so glad there is finally someone making high quality, sit-down Tamil meals. read more

This restaurant has been around my area for about 2 years and I decided to take my family out and dine in Today. The restaurant was fairly crowded, but nothing hectic as it was a holiday. We weren't greeted in any friendly matter at all, that kind of threw me off. I needed a table for 4 and the gentleman said 10 mins wait which I didn't mind waiting. During my wait I decided I wanted some drinks at the bar with my father, there was the Manager/Owner, and 2 other employees. They literally stared at us and didn't bother serving us in any way. We waited patiently and still no server approached us. By the time a bartender came and asked what would we like to drink our table was ready. Also the woman who was bartending didn't even bother continuing to take our drink order to at least transfer it to the table. Instead her exact words were "okay you can go now". We waited at our table and I was advised by a friend these guys really lack in delivering food in a timely matter. I passed the message to my family and we ordered our drinks, appetizers, and main at once. There were only 2 menus given for 4 people, I can accept that if they ran out of menus. However he gave us drinking glasses, and did not bother filling them with water. In fact, I had to request the server to fill our glasses with water. He said no problem, and I didn't see the waiter for 15 mins. When he came to our table once again I had asked "have you forget about our waters?". He brushed it off. I don't blame the waiter, but the management is poor here. The food was very salty, not too flavourful. The environment and ambience of the restaurant is adequate. It's a different set up which was attracting, but their service is HORRIBLE. Wouldn't recommend coming here if you are on a special occasion or want to take your family out. I have been to this restaurant more than few times since opened. I was returning customer for weekend buffet. It was great, with all the spices of Jaffna Cuisine! I had dinner few times and with NO complaints. Today (Apr 13, 2018) I decided to bring my entire family for dinner and left an awful taste in my mouth. We ordered different types of Naan, Rice, Chicken Curry and Squid Curry. Both Chicken and Squid curries were very bad, it was smelling & not cooked properly and left a bad taste in my mouth, even the kids didn't like the food. This place had done better with the same dishes before but somehow they had gone downhill. To the owners: Look after your recipe, quality of your incredients and customer service. The service was great, the restaurant itself was beautiful but the food was just OK, it was not spicy at all. South asian food is all about their spice and even though I asked for my food to be extra spicy, it wasn't spicy at all. The "hot sauce" was ketchup. Anyways, its a great restaurant to take your kids if they don't like spicy food or if you want to be "multicultural." read more
