The customer service is mediocre, though the gear is dang good and durable as it should be. Love this rig, it keeps my EDC/CC secure and readily available with a no zipper compartment. As well it handles all my bait and tackle needs.

5.11 is exactly what it is. I was greeted at the door and swiftly taken to exactly what I needed to purchase.

Greeted at the door but not the best customer service over all. Had mostly what I need. Sadly no military discount though.

Second Looks is clearly his baby: he's not just an attentive consultant, responding to your preferences on house, material, and tailoring (thankfully, he is not hesitant to offer his excellent suggestions on fit and styling), he's also a gentleman and a scholar, eager to share his considerable knowledge about the history of menswear, soul music, and rodeo, having been a cowboy himself before working in radio and taking over Second Looks. Michael's selection is fantastic. he showed me suits and separates from Brooks Brothers Golden Fleece, Drake's, Canali, and local Austin bespoke tailors Capra and Cavelli. He's got Allen Edmonds shoes and a great collection of belts, which seem to go very quickly. I didn't peruse his selection of casualwear, but it seemed just as well-curated and complete as his formal sections. I walked out with a Golden Fleece jacket and alligator belt having spent about $115--he gave me the educator discount. I couldn't have asked for better value. Having lived in Boston, Cleveland, Charleston, SC, Eugene, OR, Granada, Spain, and Norwich, England, I've never been so impressed by a menswear shop, let alone a secondhand store, or by its owner. TL;DR: Go see Michael. He's got the goods.

My first attempt was a failure because I had to go to the bathroom urgently and they don't have one. I rushed to the La Condesa restaurant across the street who were kind enough to let me use theirs. I returned to the store and spent my sweet time picking out options. One of the things that caught me eye ended up being a top, not a skirt. Since I was there solo, and carrying a lot of my own stuff, I asked the fitting room attendant if he could help me if sizes weren't wrong. He did this two separate times and was lovely throughout the whole experience! I decided to go with a different top as the one pictured, and in the wrong size, but I needed that denim crop. I'l probably eventually sell it but the green skirt is going to be one of my new staples for sure The other store attendant who helped me with the shirt/not a skirt debacle ended up being the one at the cash register and gave me a big shopping tote to fit my new clothes, and the personal belongings I couldn't fit inside my North Face backpack.

After finding a bike I was interested in, I was thrilled to find a button on the shelf to press for help, alas, it was broken and didn't work. I waited a good 10 minutes on line to check out. There were 2 cashiers for about 15 people (most were behind me by the time I got to one. He told me he'd have someone meet me back there. I got back there, no one! Two women were folding clothing and ignored me. Finally someone got this great guy Bryan to help me. We got my bike (which was on sale) and he cut the long line at the cashiers and checked me out. He offered to help me put it in the car too. Very helpful. The store is severely understaffed. If you can find what you want and get it up front, you're OK. But it's very difficult to get help. Review from 2018: Academy doesn't have a very good selection of tennis gear, but I guess that's based on demand. They do have great deals on decent clothing, often reduced to excellent prices. Recently I bought decent baseball caps and t-shirts for $4.99 each! Needed a couple of bikes for young grandchildren. They had a sale. Had to search for a person to help, but finally got two brand new, fully assembled kids bikes for only $44 each. Truly a good place to shop, especially if you're looking to save a few bucks.
