We were excited to go paddle boating, but the experience was extremely disappointing. The lake had so much algae that it wrapped around the paddle boat's propeller every few seconds, making it incredibly difficult to move. Instead of enjoying our time on the water, we spent most of it stopping to remove algae just so we could keep going. My biggest issue isn't the algae itself--nature happens. My issue is that the staff never warned us about the lake conditions before renting us the paddle boats. If we had known the algae was bad enough to make paddling this difficult, we never would have rented them. On top of that, one of our paddle boats had a broken piece on the hatch used to access the propeller. I personally had to go over and help my sister because she couldn't properly open and close it to remove the algae. Every time the propeller got wrapped up again, it made the process even more frustrating. I explained the situation to an employee and pointed out the broken piece. Instead of offering a solution, I was told there was nothing they could do and that she just needed to keep removing the algae and paddle her way back to the dock. Later, when she was still struggling, we were told it would cost $50 for someone to come tow or assist her. Because we were moving so slowly due to the algae, we ended up spending more time on the lake than expected and were charged an additional $16 for another 30 minutes. That extra charge could have been avoided if we had simply been told about the lake conditions before renting the boats. Instead of taking our concerns seriously, the response was essentially, "It's better in the spring." If that's the case, then customers should be told about the current lake conditions before they're charged. We could have chosen a different activity instead of paying for an experience that turned into a struggle from start to finish. Honest communication and properly maintained equipment would have made all the difference. read more

This is a great option for exploring Lady Bird Lake by kayak or paddle board. They have a modest parking lot but depending on when you get there, it may be full. For a weekend morning we were happy to snag a spot and made our way down to the rental area. You can decide on single vs double kayaks or paddleboards and rent by the hour. We decided on an hour of double kayak and thoroughly enjoyed our time out on the water. They have plenty of life vests and the staff were helpful in helping us get in and out of the kayak. It's a gorgeous lake and on a hot summer day was nice and cool on the water. Great opportunity to get some exercise in while looking at the beautiful vegetation up and down the lake. If you are like me, you probably have this record playing in your head, "What it the kayak cap side, what it flips over and I swallow moss or something else?" Probably just me...the over thinker! Just face your fear and do it! The worst thing that could happen is that you get wet. No big deal! Of course, you should not do any water sports unless you know how to swim. Once you are in the kayak, you can enjoy the beauty and majesty of Lady Bird lake, Austin's skyline and the nearby green space. You can kayak towards downtown or go in the direction of the multi-million homes on Lake Austin. Pro tips: Ensure all valuables in your car have been removed from plain sight. City of Austin highlights an increase in thefts. Also, take a Ziploc bag for keys and other things you do not want to get wet. Renting the equipment was easy and straightforward. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, providing clear instructions and a welcoming atmosphere. The Rowing Dock focuses on all experience levels and offers a range of offerings, from solo kayaks to two-person boats and group activities. Such a great spot for paddleboard and kayak rentals on Lady Bird Lake! We visited on a Thursday around noon and had no trouble finding a parking spot in the lot. Super convenient. A few people in our group rented paddleboards and kayaks, and the process was quick, smooth, and easy. Staff were friendly and helpful, and everything felt very organized. If you have your own gear, there's also a small public dock walkable just around the corner for self-launching. The location is perfect for a relaxed paddle with great views of the Austin skyline. I've been to Rowing Dock twice now: once experiencing a spring rainstorm & once with perfect weather. I found this while researching places to go paddleboarding/kayaking on Lady Bird Lake, and chose to go with them over competitors because their website was cute & I'm a sucker for colorful things - which their boats are! I was lucky both times and didn't have to contend with a super long line, but my tip is to please remember to sign the waiver at the table by their banner. My friend and I forgot to the first time, and it cost us some time. When it rained, we rushed back from just past the second overpass going towards downtown and staff was helpful & patient. I told the person at the counter that day I'd be back. Two weeks later, my dad agreed to join me. We lucked out in the parking lot & snagged the BEST spot! I also got treated to the PRETTIEST purple kayak! One star off because they are probably further from downtown than competitors so if you have limited time, it's not ideal for a quick skyline view. read more

This was my second time renting from the rowing dock and it's always a super smooth process. It was about $48 for one single kayak ($20) and a paddle board ($25) for one hour use. I haven't tried any of the other rental places here, but I assume it's around the same price. The staff is super friendly and helpful when getting in the water. Our apartment booked a paddleboard yoga event with Rowing Dock, and it was such a great experience! Parking is limited at the Rowing Dock Rental area, but there are other lots nearby--give yourself at least 15 minutes to find parking and walk over just in case. You'll need to sign a waiver and provide a driver's license for liability before participating. They have open cubbies where you can store your shoes and belongings. It can get pretty crowded on Saturday mornings, so we were lucky we didn't have to wait in line. Highly recommend bringing a hat, sunglasses, and applying sunscreen beforehand! Our instructor, MJ, was super nice and helpful throughout the entire session. We were given a dry bag to carry essentials onto the water. After a brief orientation, we put on life vests and stood next to our paddleboards. MJ helped everyone mount and paddle out to a lotus-shaped floating platform a short distance from the dock. This side of Lady Bird Lake was much cleaner compared to the area near Rainey Street. Once we arrived, MJ secured our paddleboards to the lotus structure so we wouldn't drift during yoga. We were allowed to remove our life vests for the session and didn't need them on the way back either. The yoga flow was simple and lasted about 30 minutes, with the most challenging poses being Warrior I and II. It was our first time doing paddleboard yoga, so it was a bit of a challenge for me. I didn't have the courage to stand and paddle back like my husband--I just sat the whole way. After we returned the equipment, MJ handed out water and gave back the driver's license. read more

When I lose hope on finding parking at the Austin Rowing Center, my next stop is the Rowing Dock. The Rowing Dock has a private lot and you can rent either a kayak (single or double), SUP, canoe, or a pedal kayak. The boat launch is located to the west of mopac and if you continue west, you'll be able to see more of nature and beautiful homes tucked in the hills. If you head east, you'll pass the Austin Rowing Center and will actually get to see the city skyline. I love having the option of both because just like Texas weather, my paddle depends on the vibe. You are required to wear the life jackets once on board, and if you remove it, it's at your own risk. Unfortunately, this is where the Rowing Dock has lost my business. My last experience left a sour taste in my mouth that makes me hesitant to return. I'm disappointed by how an employee treated my sister during our visit. My sister is on the spectrum and was quietly taking in the river when she was abruptly told to move in a very curt manner. Even if she was in the way, it's not like the dock was incredibly narrow to the point the employee couldn't walk around. I expect more compassion and some southern hospitality when living in Texas, but apparently that doesn't exist at the Rowing Dock. read more

My friends and I decided to rent kayaks to watch the bats take flight from the famous bridge. FYI: it is 2 miles away from the kayaking location (but worth it). Just be ready for a long trip. This is a good place to rent kayaks from because it's open until 9pm. The bats don't come out until til ~8:15pm anyway so you need a kayak place that's open late. The bats took flight a little later than expected last night, so we had to kayak so fast to try to make it back in time before their 9pm closing time (or pay a late fee). One of our friends sprinted ahead and arrived at 9:02pm, and they told us that we wouldn't have to lay a late fee- even for the rest of us who were several minutes behind her! It was SO kind of them. The workers were so chill when we were apologizing for being late and told us we hoped we had the best time ever. We did! Definitely recommend this place. It's rare you find a place with good customer service where the workers are relaxed & want to give the customers a good experience. read more
